Balogun excited over Rangers’ contract extension

Super Eagles defender to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) in Egypt, Leon Balogun, has said  the desire to win more trophies was behind signing a new  deal with Glasgow Rangers, adding he it’s a privilege  to turn out for the Gers.

“I am very, very happy and privileged to be able to extend my contract at a club like Rangers,”  the 35-year-old AFCON Bronze medal winner reportedly said as per Scottish Sun.  “I have said in the past I wish I could’ve been here sooner in my career because it fuels the fire to succeed all the time. I want to win more trophies here and win more titles.

“As a player, you want to make sure you are part of the history of this club because there are not many places in the world where there is a greater honour or a greater privilege.”

Balogun was sidelined for major part of the last campaign but his Victorian attitude has endeared him to many including coach Philippe Clement who praised  the commitment of the Nigeria International.

Clement added: “I am delighted Leon has signed a contract extension with the club to remain as a crucial part of our squad next season.

“In my time here so far, I have witnessed first-hand the impact he has not only on the pitch but off the pitch too with his valuable experience.

“He is a talented defender, who brings a lot of qualities to the group, and I look forward to continuing to work with him next season.”

Director of Football Recruitment, Nils Koppen,  reportedly said: “Leon has been an important player for this club and knows what it is like to represent Rangers.

“At a time of change within the squad, a player with Leon’s experience is vital and it is fantastic we have been able to secure him for another season.”

Balogun signs fresh one-year deal  with  Rangers

Nigeria International defender Leon Balogun has signed a new one-year deal to stay with Rangers.

The 35-year-old centre-back has won over Philippe Clement with impressive displays at the end of the season.

He spoke after Saturday’s Scottish Cup final defeat to Celtic at Hampden about his desire to extend his Ibrox career.

Now he’s penned a deal as Clement plans for the Champions League qualifiers and a tilt at silverware next term.

Earlier this month, the Rangers boss hinted that he would look to keep Balogun at the club.

He said back in early May: “Leon is somebody who showed every day the right mentality, the right passion for the club.

“So that can be something that is on the table at the end of the season also.

“But it is the end of the season that we can make a really good evaluation about everything and everybody.

“It’s going to be a very interesting period in that way for us to make the right decisions for next season also.

“To see how everybody trains, plays, behaves, works, shows resilience in the next couple of weeks because you want to be successful with this club so we need the right players in the building.”

  •  Balogun, Popoola take Off Confines to Q Gallery

Balogun, Popoola take Off Confines to Q Gallery

The Apapa Community in Lagos will celebrate the Easter season with a special offering from two contemporary Nigerian artists. It will also be a veritable platform for Apapa residents to join the big league of art collectors and connoisseurs hitherto monopolised by those on Lagos Island, Lekki and Ikoyi areas of the state.

Symbolically, Apapa residents are going beyond the norms or confines of the time to partake in savouring the rich collection of artworks.

Interestingly, the two exhibiting artists, Dr. Adeola Balogun and Nurudeen Popoola, were once under one roof as teacher and student. Today, both artists who are products of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos have not only grown in stature, but have also nurtured their reputations as seasoned sculptor and painter respectively.

The joint exhibition, tagged Off Confines is expected to feature a rich bouquet of paintings, mixed media and sculptures that reflect their individual creative trajectories. It will open on March 24 till April 13, at Q Gallery Contemporary Art House 3, Ashabi Adedire Close, Opposite Apapa Boat Club, Apapa Lagos.  It will run for three weeks. Each artist will feature 15 works.

Balogun, who held his 13th solo exhibition titled Transmogrification in 2022, will showcase his capacity in transforming mundane materials that have seemingly lost their primary purpose into objects of remarkable aesthetic contemplation, imbued with multilayered meanings. His exploration of up-cycling of e-wastes (electronic panels) gives new life to fond objects. These are engaged through their characteristic of being integral components in technology, either in two or three dimensions. Balogun applies electronic wastes as a universal metaphor to interrogate the notion of technology and transformation, which underlines the increasing role of information technology in today’s life. For him, the show affords him the opportunity to show some of his new works, not the usual metal or waste tyre sculptures.

On the spirit of the exhibition theme, Balogun said: “For me, I constantly inspire my mentees, and I enjoin them not to restrict their practice to a single source-all materials in the environment should reflect in their works. Now, in Information Technology world, there are lots to pick from for their practice. I have explored used tyres in the past.

In 2022, his solo show titled Transmogrification, was inspired by IT space in which he reflected goldmine and landmine divide inherent in cyber space. Currently Balogun extracts motifs that symbolize tracks on electronic panels for use on sculptures and paintings. The IT space, he said, has impacted the life of mankind.  His collection for display includes 10 sculptures and five drawings among them are Landmines and goldmines (mixed media), Rhythm of the moments (series) (steel), Myriads of perspective (mixed media), Bullish, and Rhythm of the moment (mixed media).

For Popoola, most of his works are inspired by Africa and its people. But though young, he is not a rookie in Lagos exhibition circuit having participated in many major art shows such as Lasgidi Arts and  Cultural Festival 2012, Passing on the torch, (Didi Museum) 2014, Lagos art and fashion exhibition 2015, and the 5th Lasgidi cultural art exhibition 2015. He won the best painting/mixed media award in 2018 Life In My City Arts Festival (LIMCAF).

His collection addresses issues of modernity in Africanism using paintings that are a blend of impressionism and pop art. He interrogates the mentality of many Africans desire to be like the West at the expense of their roots. “The essence of my works is to draw attention to that hunger by many to be like the West. And it is to tell Africans that in the quest to be like the West, we must not forget our roots,” he said. Some of the paintings are in series such as Kings and Queens. Popoola uses simple motifs and colours to address social issues like security.

Q Gallery Contemporary Art Manager, Oke Gabriel said the gallery was opened in 2021 to promote art as well as provide Apapa residents the window of opportunities to experience art activities.

  • Balogun’s posthumous 90th birthday

    Balogun’s posthumous 90th birthday

If not for his death in May,  last year, the celebration of late Otunba Olasubomi Balogun’s 90th birthday on March 9, 2024 would have been a grand occasion.

The occasion would have attracted an intimidating roll call of high and mighty dignitaries.

Known for his love of the good life, the banking czar often celebrated his birthdays, one of which was his carnival-like 80th birthday in 2014.

Sources said the founder of the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) had told his friends and children of his plans to have a week-long celebration in Nigeria and London for his 90th birthday.

Sadly, the dreaded grim reaper took him away, preventing him and his family from actualising their plans for his cherished birthday.

Despite his demise,  Balogun’s children and close friends went ahead to make his dream come true as they celebrated his posthumous 90th birthday in Lagos last weekend.

The event was emotion for the ex-Olori Omooba Akile Ijebu’s children, who wished their father was still with them to witness his birthday.

They offered prayers for him and celebrated his life after death.

Balogun rallies Rangers against St Johnstone

Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has urged his teammates to focus on  today’s rescheduled Scottish Premier League tie against St Johnstone amid the celebration of their Viaplay Cup triumph last weekend.

The Nigerian international defender returned to Ibrox in the summer after a year with English side QPR and his return was blessed with a title last weekend following a 1-0 win over Aberdeen.

Balogun loved every minute of getting his hands on the Viaplay Cup trophy with the 1-0 win over Aberdeen but says the players will be ready for the visit of St Johnstone on Wednesday.

“It is a great day to remember, I am starting to collect a lot of good memories from here,” he said.“I am very proud, to give to the fans what they want, expect and deserve.

“I am happy that we rewarded ourselves as well. I think we had quite the development in this season.

“We will enjoy this and then make sure we are ready for Wednesday as there are some very important points to play for and we want to make sure we get them.”

Balogun has been impressed with the Belgian and says Clement will make sure his squad  is  set for today’s fixture.

He added: “This is a big push for us. I am not a future teller but I am enjoying where we are going.

“The manager is honest, 24/7, and I am sure he will tell us to enjoy it but there will be some friendly reminders about Wednesday in his usual affirmative way.

“You saw him enjoying himself and it is important to take it all in.

“We have to take it into the next games as we have some massive matches coming up with massive points to play for.

“There is no time to rest, we enjoyed Sunday but we have to tune back in and go again on Wednesday.”

Balogun: It’s an honour to wear Arsenal badge

Folarin Balogun claimed “it was an honour to wear the badge” in a heartfelt note to Arsenal fans after his £35 million ($43m/€40m) move to AS Monaco.

The United States men’s national team forward took the decision to head back to France in search of regular time after a productive 21-goal loan spell at Ligue 1 side Reims last season. The Gunners, who are well-stocked in the attacking department, made some neat profit by selling their academy product, while also including a sell-on clause in their deal with Monaco.

Balogun penned an emotional farewell note that read: “With a heavy heart. I say my goodbyes to my boyhood club. I was eight years old when I first came to Hale End and every academy player walks through the gates and dreams of making their debut for the first team. I was lucky enough to fulfill that dream.

  • Brighton v Everton: Balogun returns to the bench

Brighton & Hove Albion defender, Leon Aderemi Balogun is facing a return to The Seagulls’ bench this weekend, as the club’s preferred central defence pairing is set to make a return.

Balogun has excelled in central defence across the past three matches, but footballlive.ng gathered that was due to the absences of Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk at various points in recent weeks.

However, Balogun could get the chop this weekend against Everton, as Dunk is back after serving a  ban, while Duffy is also available for the fixture at Amex Stadium today.

Ironically, during Balogun’s time on the pitch, Brighton have gone four English Premier League matches without a victory.

OPundits blamed it on Brighton manager, Chris Hughton’s inability to select his preferred centre-back partnership of England international Dunk and Duffy due to suspensions.

Rather than get worried over their struggles, Hughton says his team have no fear and need not panic – despite going four games without a win.

Much to his delight, and with Balogun playing at his best, The Seagulls picked up their first point since December 4 when they drew 1-1 with Arsenal on Wednesday.

Hughton declared: “You can lose ground in the table and you gain ground in the table over a very short period of time.

“Nothing in this division is a surprise for us. We are going into very difficult games every game. We are still learning as a club and we are still very much learning as a team, and every game is an opportunity.”

  • Balogun to lose shirt if…

The spot of Leon Balogun as first choice central defender for Nigeria is no longer guarantee unless he starts getting games at English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion, according to coach of the Nigerian team, Gernot Rohr.

Balogun has found it hard to displace the first choice pairing of Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk since his move on a free transfer from German side Mainz O5 in the summer.

The Nigerian has played just two games this season which according to Rohr isn’t good enough for a player who is already 30 years old as it will no doubt affect his fitness and physical shape.

Rohr hinted that unless he starts playing or switch clubs in January to where he can get game time, it will be hard for him to maintain his central defence pairing with William Troost-Ekong in the team.

“On Leon Balogun, we will insist all the time on our players playing regularly because it is the same for the other players. We tell them sometimes that it’s better to play in smaller club than to go to a big club in the Premier League and you don’t play. It is difficult, but we have discussed this in our conversation especially with Balogun.

“He’s 30 now which means that if he’s not playing, it will be more difficult for him to be fit.”

  • Lagos APC congress peaceful, says Balogun

The Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, said yesterday that the party held a peaceful, transparent and democratic congress for the delegates to the national convention across 245 wards.

He said no fewer than 3.5 million card-carrying members participated in the exercise, which was witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Balogun hailed members for shunning unruly behaviour during the congress.

He urged them to be orderly during the convention.

The chairman said the elected delegates were representatives of the wards and local governments, in accordance with democratic norms.

Balogun, who addressed reporters at the Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja APC secretariat on the congress and other issues, enjoined party faithful to brace for the proposed direct primaries for the election of standard-bearers for elective positions.

He said: “What took place at noon today in all the local governments in Lagos was the participation of card-carrying members of the APC in the congress for the election of delegates to the national convention holding in Abuja next month.

“Over 3.5 million duly registered party members took part in electing and ratifying the delegates. The delegates will elect our presidential candidate next month at the convention.”

Thanking members for trooping out to participate in the congress, Balogun said: “It was the beauty of democracy. Lagos APC is huge. We have a data base of over five million members and we are still registering. The exercise took place nationwide. In Lagos, it took place in our 20 local governments and 245 wards.”

He added: “The exercise was monitored by INEC. It was peaceful, orderly, transparent and democratic. The exercise was successful. I can assure members that our proposed activities, particularly the direct primaries for the election of standard-bearers for the 2019 elections, will be peaceful, orderly, transparent and democratic.”

The chairman urged party followers, who have not registered, to do so to become legal and legitimate members.

He said the intending members can either register at the wards or at the state secretariat of the party.

Balogun said: “We welcome our new members. We urge those who are yet to register to do so and we assure our new members that they will have a sense of belonging based on equity and justice.”

  • Balogun welcomes competition in defence at Brighton

Brighton and Hove Albion defender Leon Balogun is relishing the competition he has to overcome to seal a regular starting berth at the English Premier League club this season.

The Nigeria international, who signed for Brighton on a free transfer in May, made his debut for the club in their pre-season friendly against Charlton Athletic earlier this week.

He featured alongside Lewis Dunk in central defence.

“It’s always good to have that competition, it will improve all of us as defenders and then we have to take it from there,” Balogun told the club’s website.

“I’ve seen the qualities of Lewis (Dunk) and Shane (Duffy) in the past week or so since I’ve been here…

“Both are very strong physically and you can tell that they’ve played here for a long time already, but I have qualities myself and I’ll put in my best and see what happens from there.”

Balogun played in all three of Nigeria’s group stage matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

But he understands that his international achievements do not guarantee an automatic starting role at the club.

“The strikers in the Premier League will have a bit more quality than the World Cup in my opinion, and I think the qualities of the offensive players in the division mean it will be an exciting challenge for me,” Balogun added.

“I’ve come into a side where the two central defenders did very well last year — I just have to do my best, work hard and then you hope it’s enough.

“I can’t come in and say I’ve played in the World Cup and I should start — it has to be about me earning a place in the team.”

Brighton continue their pre-season preparations against Birmingham City on Saturday.
