Banky W decries extremes of prosperity, poverty gospel

Singer and pastor Olubankole Wellington aka Banky W, has weighed in on the growing criticism of church teachings on wealth, cautioning against sweeping generalisations while condemning abuses in some religious circles.

Speaking during a recent discussion, the music executive said conversations around the “prosperity gospel” have become deeply polarised, with many Nigerians assuming that the failings of a few represent the entire church.

“I don’t think it’s fair to make general statements that because I have seen evidence of this here it means everybody is guilty of this thing,” he said.

Banky W noted that both extremes — the prosperity gospel and the poverty gospel — distort the core of Christian teaching.

“The prosperity gospel is false and corrupted, the poverty gospel is also false and corrupted,” he said. “What the gospel said is that God will provide all of your needs and bless you enough for you to be a blessing.”

He added that popular expectations that Christians must either attain billionaire status or embrace lack are also misguided.

“That is the promise — the promise is not that we are all meant to be Dangote and Otedola and it’s also not that we are meant to sleep under the bridge,” he said.

While acknowledging that a segment of the church has misused these teachings, Banky W urged Nigerians not to paint all churches with the same brush.

“There’s a segment of the church that has taken that and abused it and those allegations are true and I don’t like them either,” he said.

Prosperity, poverty gospels misrepresent true faith – Banky W

Singer, actor, and politician Olubankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has urged restraint in criticising the church, arguing that condemning the entire institution over the actions of a few is unfair and oversimplifies complex realities.

Appearing on the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu in an episode released on YouTube, the music executive and pastor acknowledged valid concerns about corruption and misconduct in some religious settings but cautioned against broad generalisations.

He said: “I think that there are fair allegations in certain regards. I have a problem when we make generalistic statements. And that I think is… We’re speaking generally, which is wrong, but I get you.”

He compared the church to other sectors like education and healthcare, where both exemplary and harmful individuals coexist, noting that people do not reject all doctors because of a few bad ones, nor dismiss all teachers due to isolated abuse.

He stated: “But I think that therein lies the problem, because you don’t say, because there were doctors who were bad or guilty of abuse, then I’m never going to go to a doctor or hospitals are evil or whatever the case may be, right? You have bad teachers and good teachers.

“In the same secondary school, I have teachers that I loved who were instrumental in making me the person I became. I had teachers who were abusive.

“Everybody has that story. In the same families, there’s always, you know, one or two people that have great touch. So I don’t think that it’s fair when we make generalistic statements and say, because I’ve seen evidence of this here, then everybody is guilty of this thing”.

On the contentious issue of prosperity preaching, Banky W rejected both the prosperity gospel and the poverty gospel as distortions of biblical truth.

“The prosperity gospel is false, is corrupted. The poverty gospel is also false and corrupted. That the idea that, oh, you are just meant to be poor, wait until you die and just submit to everything and just wait.
Yes, that’s also false. What the gospel really says is that God will provide all of your needs. God will bless you enough for you to be a blessing,” he added.

He described the true Christian message as one of divine provision, God meeting needs so believers can bless others not a promise of extreme wealth or mandated suffering.

He said: “That’s the promise. The promise is not we’re all meant to be Dangote and Otedola. And it’s also not that we’re all supposed to sleep under the bridge. It’s a gospel of provision, not prosperity and not poverty”.

While admitting that certain church segments have exploited faith for gain, he stressed that these failures should not erase the positive impact of authentic ministries serving communities quietly and effectively.

He concluded: “Now, there is a segment of the church that has taken that and abused it. And I know, and those allegations are true.
And I don’t like them either. But I also don’t like when we take that, those evidence, the evidence that we do have of corruption and allegation.Just like what you said about the music business.

“Oh, you and your people, all of you are, it’s an unfair statement. And I think that as intellectual, intelligent, eloquent people, we have to be reasonable enough to say that within this field, there are some really good things and there are some bad things, regardless of your belief system. I think that’s only fair. And that’s my pushback.”

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu’s rise to global phenomenon unmatched – Banky W

Singer and preacher Banky W has showered praise on his friend and host of popular reality show, Big Brother Naija,  Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.

Banky W, on Instagram, attributed Ebuka’s success to his resilience, courage, and commitment to being his best self.

He noted that despite finishing eighth in the first season of Big Brother Africa,  Ebuka’s journey wasn’t easy, referencing his early days as an unknown contestant, and how he had to work hard to build his career.

Banky W highlighted Ebuka’s various endeavors, including hosting shows, writing for newspapers, and earning a master’s degree, as examples of his dedication and perseverance.

He drew a parallel between Ebuka’s journey and the biblical story of Jesus turning water into wine, emphasising the importance of putting in the effort before achieving success.

According to Banky W, success is a combination of divine grace and personal hard work.

He wrote: “When you think of Ebuka, don’t just think of fashion, fame, or fortune. Think resilience.

“Before he became one of the most in-demand, recognisable, and well-paid media personalities in African history, he was an unknown contestant on the first edition of Big Brother Nigeria, a contestant who didn’t come 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, but 8th.

“He didn’t win the show, but he won in life. Year after year, as the unmistakable, irreplaceable face of the franchise, he has become synonymous with the show and is visible all over the continent.

“But this isn’t a story about TV shows and endorsement deals… It’s more about having the courage, consistency and commitment to be the best version of yourself and staying true to it.

“As we sat there, toasting to the originality of Ebuka, Osas and Egbon Steez… I remembered the first miracle Jesus performed when He turned water into wine. That miracle only happened after the servants were obedient and diligent enough to fill all the jars with water, bucket after bucket, trip after trip. No matter how thankless and tiring it might have seemed at the time. And it was only when the jars were full that Christ said, “Now draw some out”.

“We never know when grace will breathe on our efforts and give us the moment that will change everything. Our job is to keep filling the jars.

“That’s Ebuka’s story. Hosting Rubbing Minds. Writing for Newspapers. Earning his Master’s degree. Hosting debates. Wearing agbadas to his friend’s wedding.

“Taking opportunities that didn’t always pay, but always prepared. Every degree, every column, every article was another trip to the well. Until God said “Now”.

“And I’m grateful to still be here to witness his journey. What a beautiful “Now” it is.

“Success takes grace and grind. The grace is from God. The grind is from you. So, while we take this moment to congratulate Ebuka, Osas and Egbon Farooq, perhaps we should also use it to question ourselves. What does “filling jars” look like in your life?”.

What many may see as the finish line of a journey can become the starting point of the next chapter of your story. The past few years have been a stretching season for my family and me. I learned that you can’t pour from an empty cup, and so sometimes, it is necessary to step off the dance floor and onto the balcony… to reflect on how far you have come, who you are, and who you would like to become. Success in life and leadership isn’t just about a specific destination or the journey to get there, but about who you become along the way.

I’m even more grateful that we welcomed our 2nd child, Hezekiah Oluwadarasimi Wellington, into the world in the middle of earning this degree in Washington, DC.

“Parenting 2 children in the US, while earning a full-time Master’s and serving as a Fellow on Capitol Hill all at the same time was completely exhausting, but by the grace of God, the strength of faith and the support of family, friends and mentors, we did it!

“So as I prepare to step off the balcony and return to the dance floor, I hope you take this as a sign that it’s never too late to dream a new dream, or redefine the ending of an existing one”.

  • Money isn’t the key to happiness, says Banky W

Money isn’t the key to happiness, says Banky W

Actor, singer, and politician Olubankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has advised netizens on the importance of seeking God, regardless of their pursuit of wealth and riches.

In a sit-down discussion with Hawa Magaji on ‘Who’s In My House,’ Banky W emphasized that every individual has a spiritual void that cannot be filled with money alone.

The singer-turned-pastor highlighted that the pursuit of money, fame, success, or other material possessions can never fully satisfy one’s inner longing for fulfillment.

Citing a tragic incident, he said a billionaire friend of his wouldn’t have committed suicide if he truly wealth guaranteed happiness.

Reflecting on his journey, the singer acknowledged that achieving external success does not always translate to internal peace or happiness.

Banky W urged others to prioritize spiritual fulfillment over material gains to find lasting joy and purpose in life.

He said: “I strongly believe that there is a godship void inside of every person. And until you decide to fill the void with God, you can try money, fame, success, women or men, drugs, alcohol… you can try filling it with anything else and you will always come up short.

“A lot of times, especially when we are young and coming up, we think that it is money that we are chasing. And yes, it’s money because you need a certain major of success to be okay in your life. But if money was the key to happiness, then billionaires would never commit suicide. And I’ve sat across from a billionaire, not in naira, who ended up killing himself. At that time, in my mind, I was like, ‘Mehn, this guy has it made.’

“This is not to judge anybody who has made that decision but it’s a lesson for us all that this thing that you are looking for is not money. That is why the scripture says, ‘What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and to lose his own soul.’

“And I think for me, probably back in 2014/2015, I got to a place where in the eyes of the world you look successful but inside you are coming up short.”

Don’t be controlled by social media opinions, Banky W urges

Singer and politician, Olubankole Wellington, aka Banky W, has urged netizens against being swayed by the pressure that comes from social media.

Sharing his nuggets of wisdom with the public, Banky W spoke on how to deal with social media validation.

Appearing on the recent episode of the Who’s In My House show, hosted by Hawa Magaji, Banky W briefly spoke about how he and his wife and actress, Adesua Etomi-Wellington could keep their personal lives private.

He said they have both mastered the act of not being controlled by people’s opinions.

He emphasised that people should not seek validation from others saying, “Don’t get your validation from the comments section which is very hard to do in today’s times.

“This is because when you post something you immediately want to go and see how many likes and comments. The lesson is to not get the validation from the comment section. You can get the humour from there.”

Banky W explained that even though it is human nature to care, it’s best to not let other people’s opinions control oneself.

“It is unrealistic to not care because you will care about what people say. The reason why you take a shower and brush your teeth and get dressed to look pretty is because you care what people think,” he said.

“It’s good to care but it’s bad when you let that control you. I think that we’ve gotten to a dangerous point in the world where we’ve gone past the point of caring about people’s opinions to being controlled by them. Now people do things just to trend and say things just to go viral or make things up. That’s something that Susu and I have to continually learn and remind ourselves and that’s how we try to carry ourselves and navigate the world that we’re in now,” he concluded.
