  • Barau: A gospel of democratic representation

Barau: A gospel of democratic representation

    • By Shariff Aminu Ahlan

It is time to celebrate and give credit to the outstanding and credible public office holders who have distinguished themselves in providing credible representation and displayed patriotic zeal in discharging their responsibilities.

Individuals who solidify and maintain remarkable integrity and unique leadership styles through their numerous commendable activities have given our democracy meaning and a promising future.

This is despite the many irrational actions spearheaded by disgruntled elements who misused opportunities and privileges, having been elevated and placed in the position of power and authority by the teeming voting populace who entrusted their collective wealth at their disposal.

Our focus should be on those who are giving hope to the wretched,  misrepresented, robbed, cheated, devastated and hopeless citizens and the assurance that good governance would triumph and genuine democratic culture would one day be established and sustained, which are requisites for the betterment of the people and the development of the country.

There is no gainsaying the fact Senator Barau I Jibrin, popularly known as Maliya, who is currently the Deputy President of the Senate, is one of the rare politicians who are doing a remarkable job in carrying out their responsibilities as representatives of the electorate who voted them into power. They are those exhibiting patriotism and genuine concern for the plight of their people by executing people-oriented projects aimed at ensuring the delivery of the dividends of democracy. Senator Barau’s imprints in this regard are numerous and acknowledged by the people of his senatorial district, Kano State, and the country as a whole.

The unique and fantastic politician daily displays mastery of his responsibilities as a high-ranking presiding officer – the Deputy  President of the Senate – and what it entails. It’s to his credit that the would-be North West Development Commission (NWDC) is set to become a reality. He initiated and conceived the novel idea, which attracted nationwide and global commendations.

The creation of such an agency will ensure that the insecurity-wracked region is developed and reconstructed and the necessary resources to tackle banditry and terrorism ravaging it.

Senator Barau presented the historic bill and the senators welcomed the idea with resounding applause and almost general acceptance. It was considered a matter of necessity due to the pressing needs it raises, which compared with the same reasons that gave birth to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

With several bills and motions to his credit,  the super senator is also executing many projects in his senatorial district, the kinds that one can say, without fear of disputing or challenge, that no other senatorial zone in any part of the country can compare with. They are intellectually crafted and initiated projects scattered across the entire 13 local government areas that make up the zone. They are undoubtedly amazing and worthy of emulation as they touch every aspect of human endeavours, ranging from education, health, economic and social amenities.

As a senator who chaired the coveted Appropriations Committee in the last dispensation, he has used his position to execute numerous projects. But this piece will only set its microscope on the first year of this dispensation and see the wonders he has done within the last 12 months.

First, the progressive senator singlehandedly sponsored hundreds of brilliant students to further their studies abroad. A project that gulped millions of dollars. An area that even state governors dread to tread. That’s the vintage Senator Barau Maliya.

Still on education,  he has built and renovated hundreds of schools across the 13 local governments under his senatorial zone and facilitated the establishment of  13 National Open University study centres.

Not to mention the Animals Health College, Police Girls College, Federal Polytechnics, and the Center for Management Development, which he initiated and ensured their establishment. What a Servant!

The construction of roads is getting high consideration as Senator Barau is presently constructing road networks of over 30km across the 13  local government areas, along with standard drainage. Additionally, solar-powered lights have been provided along the roads by the admirable senator.

The credit for constructing the road from Rimin Gado to Kabo is also given to him.

Several empowerment programmes aimed at giving opportunities to thousands of his constituents to elevate their living conditions have continued to be carried out by the People’s Senator.

Thousands of machines for small-scale businesses are provided to thousands of beneficiaries. To cap it up, buses are being distributed to ease transportation and empower the people.

Many motorbikes are also been given out, all in a bid to satisfy his caring and golden heart which is always dreaming of a prosperous nation with proud citizens

.Food items worth millions are consistently given out, not to mention his mega and eye-catching power station worth over N20 billion for five local government areas.

Not done yet, the humble, generous and philanthropist per excellence recently did the unimaginable and first-of-its-kind constituency project that set tongues wagging as the topic of discussion when he distributed 107 (one hundred and seven) buses to kick-start what he tagged as the ‘Kano North Transport Service aimed at easing the transportation problems of the entire senatorial district and beyond.

His primary target, as usual, is to empower the beneficiaries and instantly make them self-reliant and change their lives for the better. The gesture sent the entire zone agog with celebration and the outpouring of accolades and prayer for an illustrious son of the soil and undoubtedly the most performing in the zone’s history and the nation.

Trust the tireless and goodhearted senator who never ceases to amaze onlookers and societal development analysts. As it is the rainy season and farmers’ major headaches and pressing needs revolve around fertiliser availability, the senator is about to distribute truckloads of the direly needed input to the teeming population of his senatorial district and other parts of the state. The noble and commendable gesture will undoubtedly help the teeming populace and ensure massive food production. What a progressive and extraordinary senator.

It is indeed amazing and undoubtedly a thing of pride watching a single individual doing all these glorious and commendable projects all in a bid to better the lives of the people of his senatorial zone and the entire people of the state, as most of those constituency projects are extended for the overall benefit of all.

Senator Barau is a legend, a thing of pride not just to the people of his senatorial zone, Kano State, but also to the nation. He has become a symbol of emulation to the teeming politicians who are fortunate enough to be holding public office. If all those in positions of power and authority have the identical zeal, determination and clear mindset by becoming responsible and hold the voting populace who entrusted their same power and privilege at heart just like this active, generous and humble politician, the Nigerian populace would indeed have a different story to tell.

Nigerians would surely be proud of their responsible leadership and beat their chests with pride about those holding public office, cherish and acknowledge the democratic process with pride and satisfaction. Senator Barau, by all means, is a hero and deserves every accolade and commendation.

It’s right time for new constitution, says Barau

    • Advocates collaboration with all stakeholders

Senate Deputy President Barau Jibrin  said yesterday that Nigeria now has an opportunity to produce  a constitution that meets the wishes and aspirations of the people.

He said the 10th  National Assembly was poised to do just that.

Jibrin who doubles as Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the Constitution, spoke at a joint retreat for the NASS  secretariat staff and consultants to enhance the successful consideration and ongoing process of amending of the Constitution in Abuja.

Both chambers of the  National Assembly are already receiving  memoranda on amending  the provisions of the  Constitution.

Currently, 40 Constitution alteration bills are before the two chambers for their consideration.

Both the Senate and House of Representatives have tentatively fixed December 2025 for the completion of the assignment.

The ongoing exercise to amend the constitution is to give more power to  the states.

The last alteration deleted power, correctional facilities and railways from the exclusive list. Those items were moved to the concurrent list. With the alteration, both federal and state governments can now legislate on these matters.

The issue of state policing is expected to top the priority of both chambers in view of clamour that establishment of state police would help curb rising insecurity across the country.

The House of Representatives had also said it would revisit some of the alteration bills rejected during the last exercise especially those dealing with gender and women issues as well as creating a role for traditional rulers in the governance of the country.

In his remarks at yesterday’s  retreat, Jibrin called for collaboration among all stakeholders to drive the ongoing constitution amendment process to a successful conclusion.

Barau, according to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, commended the synergy between the constitution review secretariat and consultants to the Senate and House of Representatives committees, saying this would engender harmony in the workings of both committees.

He pledged  that the National Assembly would carry out the review  of the constitution  through a thorough aggregation of the yearnings of  Nigerians from all walks of life through public hearings and collection of memoranda from various interests throughout the country.

He said the committees would also embark on a  progressive engagement with state governments and legislatures and the federal government to achieve consensus on all issues.

Barau said: “We must work together. Our country is facing a lot of challenges and this is the right time to fashion out a constitution that will go in line with the wishes and aspirations of the people of this country.

“The world is dynamic and this compels all serious countries to go  with modernity and fashion their laws in accordance with contemporary happenings within their peculiarities.

“We have started on a progressive note of collaboration and let us add momentum to this very important collaboration within our ranks in order to achieve a result that will help in driving the process of making prospective peace, justice and fair play in the way we run our affairs as a nation.”
