Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-2 with Raphinha’s late strike in Super Cup thriller

Barcelona edged past Real Madrid in a five-goal thriller to win back-to-back Spanish Super Cup finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

It marked a 16th triumph in the tournament for Hansi Flick’s side, with Barcelona also beating Los Blancos in last year’s final.

Brazilian forward Raphinha’s floated shot in the 73rd minute proved to be the winner after a frantic ending to the first half.

Three quick-fire goals in first-half stoppage time put the two on level terms at the break after Raphinha had opened the scoring, drilling into the bottom corner in the 36th minute.

Vinicius Jr equalised two minutes into three of added time, nutmegging Jules Kounde on a brilliant run before sliding into the far corner to score his first Real goal in 17 games, since 4 October, 2025.

Robert Lewandowski then clipped in off the post to restore Barca’s lead in the 49th minute.

But Gonzalo Garcia hooked in three minutes later after a scramble in the box that saw Dean Huijsen’s header hit the bar, as Barca boss Flick protested the the half-time whistle should already have been blown.

Frenkie de Jong was shown a straight red card in stoppage time after lunging in on Kylian Mbappe, who came on as a substitute having recovered from a knee injury.

Late chances at both ends made for a nervy finale with Marcus Rashford shooting wide when clear, while Alvaro Carreras and then Raul Asencio both shot straight at goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

But Barca held on to secure a second consecutive title for the first time since 2011.

AHOY CATALAN DERBY: High stake as bitter rivals Espanyol, Barcelona duel tonight

    By Daniel Akinte

Espanyol have enjoyed an excellent 2025-26 campaign to date, with Manolo Gonzalez’s side boasting a record of 10 wins, three draws and four defeats from their 17 matches to sit fifth in the La Liga table, five points ahead of sixth-placed Real Betis.

The White and Blues finished 14th  in Spain’s top flight last season, so there was clear room for improvement this term, and it has been an impressive campaign to date.

Espanyol have not finished higher than seventh in La Liga since claiming fifth in 2004-05, so there is plenty on the line this term, and the Catalan outfit will enter this match in strong form, having been victorious in each of their last five league games against Sevilla, Celta Vigo, Rayo Vallecano, Getafe and Athletic Bilbao.

Periquitos have incredibly not managed to beat Barcelona at home in La Liga since January 2007, while their last league success was a 2-1 win at Camp Nou in February 2009.

Espanyol have been largely impressive at home this season, boasting a record of six wins, one draw and two defeats from their nine league games in front of their own supporters.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have won each of their last seven matches in all competitions, including a 2-0 success over Villarreal in their final match of 2025.

The Catalan outfit have triumphed in their last eight league games, with a total of 46 points from 18 matches leaving them top of the table, four points clear of second-placed Real Madrid, with Los Blancos having a wobble towards the end of the year.

Barcelona have comfortably the best attacking record in La Liga this season, scoring 51 times, but they have conceded 20, which is the most in the top seven, and that will be concerning for head coach Hansi Flick at this stage of the season.

Blaugrana are looking to record a fourth straight win over Espanyol, but they did drop two points against their Catalan rivals at RCDE Stadium in February 2022.

Barcelona’s attention will switch to the Spanish Super Cup after this match, preparing to head to Saudi Arabia to tackle Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals of the tournament, ahead of a potential final against either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.

UCL: Kounde double gives Barcelona victory at Nou Camp

Defender Jules Kounde scored twice as Barcelona fought back from a goal down to beat Eintracht Frankfurt – in Barca’s first Champions League game at the Nou Camp in more than three years.

The visitors went ahead in the 21st minute when Ansgar Knauff raced on to Nathaniel Brown’s pass, held off Alejandro Balde and slotted the ball past Joan Garcia.

England forward Marcus Rashford, on as a half-time substitute, made an instant impact as his cross from the left was headed in by Kounde in the 50th minute.

The France defender scored his second three minutes later, this time connecting with Lamine Yamal’s delivery when unmarked six yards out.

The victory takes five-time European champions Barca on to 10 points from their six matches and, with two games to go, still in contention to claim a top-eight place that would see them jump straight into the last 16 and avoid the play-off round.

Hansi Flick’s side play at Slavia Prague on 21 January and end their league phase campaign at home to Copenhagen a week later.

Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt, seventh in the German Bundesliga, are in serious danger of being eliminated from European competition as they only have four points from their opening six matches.

UCL: Things to know as Chelsea host Barcelona

Chelsea and Barcelona – two former Champions League winners enter Tuesday night’s showdown level on seven points from their first four league-phase fixtures, making the clash at Stamford Bridge pivotal in the race for automatic top-eight qualification.

Both sides sit just outside the cut-off and know that victory could significantly strengthen their push toward the last 16.

Chelsea arrive in impressive domestic form, riding a wave of three consecutive Premier League wins against Tottenham, Wolves, and Burnley, all without conceding. Enzo Maresca’s young squad has surged to second place behind leaders Arsenal, with the Blues remarkably going 50 straight Premier League matches without starting a player aged 30 or above. Barcelona, meanwhile, remain locked in their usual battle with Real Madrid for La Liga supremacy.

Hansi Flick’s men enjoyed a triumphant return to the refurbished Camp Nou on Saturday, dispatching Athletic Bilbao 4–0 in front of their home fans for the first time in 909 days. Ferran Torres struck twice, Lamine Yamal delivered two assists, Robert Lewandowski got his trademark goal, and Fermin Lopez added another as Barça reclaimed top spot in Spain.

The history between the two giants has swung dramatically across eras. Chelsea famously stunned Barcelona in 2012 under Roberto Di Matteo on their way to their maiden Champions League title, while the Catalans returned the favour in 2017–18 with a commanding 3–0 round-of-16 aggregate win.

Tuesday’s meeting may not carry knockout stakes, but both teams urgently need points after inconsistent European starts. Barcelona were held to a chaotic 3–3 draw by Club Brugge last time out, while Chelsea managed only a point away to Qarabag.

Barça’s defensive fragility remains a theme, having conceded in every Champions League match this season, though Saturday’s clean sheet ended an 11-game run without one. Chelsea, by contrast, looks steadier at the back and continues to rely on a blossoming young core mixed with emerging leadership.

    Team News

Chelsea captain Reece James was substituted at half-time against Burnley, but Maresca clarified the decision was precautionary and pre-planned. Wesley Fofana, rested for “protection,” should return to contention, while Tosin Adarabioyo is pushing for a start after starring at the weekend. However, the Blues remain without Romeo Lavia (thigh), Cole Palmer (groin/toe), Dario Essugo (thigh), Levi Colwill (knee), and the still-suspended Mykhaylo Mudryk.

For Barcelona, Alejandro Balde was withdrawn after a head knock but is expected to be available. Marcus Rashford is doubtful due to illness, though Raphinha made his comeback from a hamstring injury, and Ferran Torres’s brace makes him difficult to drop. Frenkie de Jong returns after a domestic suspension, but Pedri (hamstring), Gavi (knee), and Marc-André ter Stegen (back) remain sidelined.

    Chelsea’s possible XI:

Sanchez; James, Adarabioyo, Chalobah, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Neto, Pedro, Garnacho; Delap

    Barcelona’s possible XI:

    J. Garcia; Kounde, E. Garcia, Cubarsi, Balde; Casado, De Jong; Yamal, Lopez, Torres; Lewandowski

UEFA okays  Camp Nou return for Barcelona

UEFA has given Barcelona the go-ahead to play Champions League matches at their partially rebuilt Camp Nou stadium, the La Liga giants  have said.

The news comes just a couple of days after Barca announced their long-awaited return to league action at the stadium, which had been beset by construction chaos, after more than two years in exile.

The Spanish champions will host Eintracht Frankfurt at the Camp Nou on December 9, just over two weeks after re-inaugurating the stadium against Athletic Bilbao in domestic action on November 22.

Barcelona said in a statement that “UEFA accepted the request, considering that all the necessary requirements have been met.”

The Camp Nou return will end a messy saga in which Barcelona repeatedly had to postpone their announced reopening of the stadium as construction delays and a failure to secure safety licences curtailed their plans.

The Catalans were humiliatingly forced to play two matches at their 6,000-capacity Johan Cruyff training ground stadium in the first weeks of the season after failing to get the permit they needed for Camp Nou, because of safety reasons.

They have since then been playing in the 55,000-seater Olympic stadium on Montjuic hill.

Barcelona will open the Camp Nou against Bilbao with a temporary capacity of 45,401 spectators, with space for 105,000 when the top tier is eventually completed.

They opened the stadium up for 23,000 fans to watch a training session earlier in November as a test event in the reopening process.

The delay in the work represents a huge financial loss for the club, which needs the revenue generated by its stadium to regain stability.

Financially troubled Barcelona are estimated to be spending 1.5 billion euros ($1.74bn) on the rebuild.

Barca return to  Camp Nou  Nov. 22

Barcelona will finally return to their reconstructed Camp Nou stadium against Athletic Bilbao on November 22 in La Liga, the club said Monday, after more than two years in exile.

Since the stadium closed at the end of the 2022⁄23 season, the Catalan giants have been forced to play elsewhere, mainly at the Olympic Stadium on the city’s Montjuic hill.

A series of delays means Camp Nou is reopening a year after it was originally slated to, following a 1.5 billion euro ($1.75 billion) transformation beset by construction chaos.

Barcelona will open the stadium with a temporary capacity of 45,401 spectators, with space for 105,000 when the top tier is completed.

Pedri hamstring tear adds to Barcelona injury woes

Barcelona and Spain midfielder Pedri is set for a significant spell out after suffering a tear in his hamstring.

On Wednesday, Barcelona confirmed that the 22-year-old had a tear in the distal biceps femoris muscle in his left thigh.

The biceps femoris is part of the hamstring group at the back of the thigh.

The club did not give a recovery timeline, instead stating that “the player’s recovery will dictate his return to action”.

Pedri had played in 41 consecutive games for Barcelona, and has missed just one of Hansi Flick’s 73 matches as manager.

The midfielder was set to miss Barcelona’s next La Liga match against Elche after receiving a red card for a late challenge on Aurelien Tchouameni during Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Real Madrid.

  • 2025 El Clásico: Things to know as Real Madrid take on Barcelona

2025 El Clásico: Things to know as Real Madrid take on Barcelona

Real Madrid are set to welcome Barcelona in an El Clasico clash scheduled to take place on Sunday, 26 October 2025 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The two Spanish giants are set for a top spot battle in the La Liga standings with Barca looking to yet again defeat Los Blancos in arguably the most watched fixture in football.

    Teams’ Form and Recent Performances

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid have had an almost unblemished 2025/26 season under new head coach Xabi Alonso following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti.

The Spanish giants have been in scintillating form having won all but one of their matches across all competitions this season which culminated in them claiming top spot in the league standings as well as sitting pretty well in the top eight of the UEFA Champions League league phase table following a 1-0 win over Juventus in matchday three of the European competition.

Jude Bellingham gave Madrid a well deserved lead in the second half to continue their 100 percent start to the competition they have won a record 15 times.

Alonso’s side’s only loss of the campaign was the embarrassing 5-2 defeat to their city rivals Atletico Madrid in the league last month.

El Clasico will no doubt be Madrid’s biggest test as they face a side they have failed to defeat on four different occasions last season.

    Barcelona

Barcelona started the 2025/26 season in an impressive fashion just as how they ended the 2024/25 campaign which saw them win the domestic treble ( La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana).

However, the Blaugrana lost their two matches just before the last international break. A 2-1 loss at home to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League was followed by a shocking 4-1 defeat away to Sevilla.

It has been a different affair for Hansi Flick’s side after the break as they have won each of their two matches since then. A 6-1 home thrashing of Greek giants Olympiacos came right after a narrow 2-1 win against Girona in the Catalan derby.

Barca will now be going into the heavy clash with Real Madrid with some sort of confidence.

    Head-To-Head Record

Real Madrid and Barcelona have met on 216 occasions across all competitions. Los Blancos hold a slender lead with 106 victories to Barca’s 104 wins while 51 matches have ended with the two teams sharing the spoils.

The last eight matches between these two sides have ended in four victories apiece with Madrid winning the first four while Barca have won each of the last four including a 4-3 triumph which puts them on the brink of winning their 25th top-flight title last term.

A brace from Raphinha as well as Lamine Yamal and Eric Garcia’s strikes meant Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick counted almost for nothing for Madrid, who lost four Clasicos in a season for the first time since the 1982/83 term.

Key Players To Watch Out For

    Real Madrid

    Kylian Mbappe

Mbappe has been in a breathtaking form since the beginning of the season having scored 16 goals in all competitions.

The France international scored in each of his last 11 matches for both club and country. However, he was unable to extend this feat in the win over Juventus on Wednesday night.

Mbappe is currently the top goalscorer in the La Liga with 10 goals. He is also the joint-top scorer in the Champions League alongside Bayern Munich talisman Harry Kane with five goals each.

    Vinicius Junior

Vinicius is another player Barcelona will be wary of in this El Clasico with his explosive pace, exceptional dribbling with his quick feet and agility, and improved finishing.

Despite nowhere near his best, the 25-year-old Brazilian has managed to score six goals and provide as many assists for los Blancos.

    Barcelona

    Lamine Yamal

Yamal is undoubtedly Barca’s golden boy, who is likely going to pose all sorts of troubles for Madrid’s defence. Despite having injury troubles which has limited him to just seven matches, the teenage sensation still has eight goal contributions (three goals and five assists).

An inverted right-footed winger who cuts inside, combined with exceptional dribbling, close ball control, and a mature playmaking ability, the 18-year-old has all the attributes to unlock Madrid and hand them their second loss of the term.

    Marcus Rashford

Rashford is arguably Barca’s best player so far this campaign. The Manchester United loanee seems to have rejuvenated his career in Spain as his five goals and six assists including a brace against Olympiacos on Tuesday point to this direction.

The 27-year-old, who is in a rich vein of form, has the speed, versatility, dribbling and incredible finishing ability to hurt the league leaders.

    Team News

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid are set to be without Rudiger  in this El Clasico as he remains sidelined due a muscular issue he sustained during the international break in September.

Alaba was substituted out of last weekend’s match against Getafe owing to a calf injury. The Austrian will not be available in El Clasico.

Dani Ceballos and Dean Huijsen are both expected to return to the team after missing out in the victory over Juve.

Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also expected to make a return to the team after being on the sidelines for quite a number of games.

    Barcelona

Raphinha is anticipated for a return this El Clasico even as his hamstring injury has taken longer than expected.

Olmo will not return to action until at least the beginning of November after suffering a calf injury earlier this month while playing for Spain on international duty.

Goalkeeping duo, Marc Andre ter Stegen and Joan Garcia are out of this fixture due to injury leaving Wojciech Szczęsny as the man in between the sticks for Barcelona.

Robert Lewandowski and Gavi are long term absentees therefore won’t be available for selection.

    Possible Starting Line-ups

    Real Madrid

Courtois; Valverde, Asencio, Militao, Carreras; Tchouameni, Bellingham, Camavinga; Brahim, Mbappe, Vinicius

    Barcelona

Szczęsny; Kounde, Araujo, Cubarsi, Balde; Casado, De Jong, Pedri; Raphinha, Rashford, Yamal

La Liga confirm ‘historic’ Barcelona match in Miami

Barcelona will face Villarreal in Miami in a La Liga match on December 20, the Spanish top flight said Wednesday, making it the first European league fixture to be played abroad.

Earlier this week, European football governing body UEFA said they opposed the idea of games being played overseas but would permit it on an exceptional basis, along with a Serie A match in Australia in February between AC Milan and Como.

“With this match we take a historic step that projects La Liga and Spanish football into a new dimension,” said La Liga president Javier Tebas in a statement. “We understand and respect the concerns that this decision may generate, but it is important to put it into context – it is a single match out of the 380 that make up the season.”

The game was due to be played at Villarreal’s home stadium but will now take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in the United States, in Florida.

Villarreal will take measures to compensate season ticket holders after the game was moved.

“Villarreal season ticket holders will be able to travel for free to the match, and those who choose not to travel to Miami will enjoy a 30 percent discount on their season ticket price as part of the measures designed to reward their support and loyalty,” said La Liga.

In September a total of 18 fan groups from both teams involved expressed their “complete opposition” to the match taking place abroad.

La Liga have attempted to play matches overseas dating back to 2017 but the Spanish football federation (RFEF) frequently resisted, despite hosting the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia themselves.

Barcelona’s rivals Real Madrid have also expressed their disapproval at the decision to take a La Liga game abroad.

They said in August hosting the game in Miami would “alter the competitive balance” of the league and set an “unacceptable precedent”.

  • Barcelona’s Gavi out for up to five months

Barcelona’s Gavi out for up to five months

Barcelona midfielder Gavi could miss five months of the season after having knee surgery.

The 21-year-old featured in Barcelona’s opening two matches of the season before injuring his right knee during a training session in August.

There were fears the Spain international had suffered a recurrence of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear he sustained in 2023.

Although scan results revealed Gavi had avoided an ACL tear, he has had an operation to repair damaged cartilage.

“Gavi has had an arthroscopy to resolve a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured to preserve the meniscus,” a Barcelona statement read.

“Recovery time is estimated at around 4-5 months.”

Gavi became the fourth youngest debutant in Barcelona history when he made his debut in 2021.

He has scored 10 goals in 155 games and won five trophies.

He suffered an ACL tear on international duty with Spain in November 2023 that kept him out for 11 months.

Barcelona are second in La Liga, five points behind rivals Real Madrid with a game in hand.
