  • Barcelona outcast Villa welcomes Neymar rivalry

arcelona striker David Villa has been widely expected to be the man to make way for the arrival of Neymar, but the Spain striker insists he welcomes the competition the Brazil star will bring.

Neymar, 21, signed for Barca in a reported $75.3 million (57 million euros) deal earlier this month and he has thrilled at the Confederations Cup, scoring three stunning goals to fire the hosts into the semi-finals.

The former Santos star will be a key component of the Barcelona attack and his arrival has only posed further question marks over the future of Villa, who lost his starting place last season following a lengthy injury.

Last season, the forward started just 17 La Liga games and featured in a further 11 from the bench, scoring 10 goals.

But while Villa is tipped to leave, he is focused on a future with Barca that he hopes will see him line-up alongside Neymar.

“He is one of the best players in the world right now,” Villa said, during a press conference ahead of Spain’s final Confederations Cup group game against Nigeria in Fortaleza on Sunday.

“We’ve waited a long time to get him and it’s a great pleasure to welcome a player like that to play in your country. He will make us happy.”

Villa also predicted that former Barca coach Pep Guardiola will prove a success when he succeeds Jupp Heynckes as manager of European club champions Bayern Munich next week.

Guardiola brought Villa to Barcelona from Valencia in 2010 and the pair tasted success in the league, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League before the former Spain midfielder stepped down from his post last year.

“He’s a fabulous coach and you can tell that by the statistics since he started coaching,” Villa said. “He’ll be coaching the European champions, with marvellous players.

“If you look at last season, you have a sensational team and a sensational coach, so they’re going to be very difficult rivals for any team.”

  • Nigeria’s image: Good news from Barcelona

This headline will surely elicit excitement or scorn. Let me go straightaway to announce the good news: that Nigeria, this year, made it into the list of the 50 Most Reputable Countries in the World in 2012! This was the result of the 2012 Reputation Track conducted by the US-based Reputation Institute (RI), the world’s foremost organisation that imparts reputation knowledge and monitors reputation of organisations, places and leaders. The announcement was made at the just concluded 17th international conference on Corporate Reputation, Brand Identity and Competitiveness held from June 5-7 in Barcelona Spain. Nigeria was noted to have made some significant improvement in its reputation. Before now, the country was not even considered for ranking.

The not-so-good news, however, is that Nigeria was rated 47th out of 50. It scored only 31.54% mark above Pakistan (26.59%), Iran (21.34%) and Iraq (20.32%). All the eight countries that scored below 40% (China, Colombia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, etc) were noted for poor/bottom tier reputation. Two other African countries – South Africa (33rd) and Egypt (39th) made the list in the weak/vulnerable reputation category. Canada, Australia and Sweden topped the list of countries with strong/robust reputation.

The criteria for the ranking were three-fold: effective government, advanced economy and appealing environment. Under “effective government”, a country with robust reputation is expected to have adopted progressive social and economic policies, is a responsible participant in the global economy, is a safe place and operates efficiently. Under “advanced economy”, a reputable country is supposed to produce high quality products/services, have many well-known brands, is an important contributor to global culture, is technologically advanced, has a well-educated workforce, and values education. And under “appealing environment”, a reputable country is supposed to be a beautiful country, is an enjoyable place, offers an appealing lifestyle, and the people are friendly and welcoming to visitors.

That Nigeria was indeed mentioned among the world’s 50 most reputable countries was therefore cheering enough for me at the conference, especially with all our concerns about corruption, insecurity, challenges of governance, poor economy, weak institutions, decayed infrastructure, high unemployment, among others.

The fact that Nigeria was mentioned among the most reputable countries in the world would certainly excite many Nigerians, especially government officials who would now incorporate the information into their campaigns. But for serious minded professionals, this is a wake-up call for strategies to pull Nigeria up the reputation ladder in the ranking for next year. Besides, this result shows that reputation is not earned by sloganeering, propaganda or the so-called “image-laundering” which is the practice of quacks. Reputation is the result of hard work — effective governance, appealing place, good people and strong economy. Slogans are only devised to communicate the goodness.

As the Reputation Institute clearly stated in its report, just like companies, the world’s places – its countries, states and cities exist in a reputation economy. How they are perceived by stakeholders, tourists, investors, students, workers and consumers can make the difference between having a robust or depressed economy. The economic impact of good reputation on countries is enormous: they attract more foreign direct investments (FDI), increased exports and foreign knowledge and talents.

Investors want to invest in countries where their investments would be profitable and safe, where there are infrastructures to harness the investment, where the people are friendly, and where there is respect for the rule of law. Tourists want a beautiful place where they can go, watch exciting scenes, meet friendly people and go back home safe. Spain has no oil. Its economy is sustained mainly by tourism. In 2012, the country recorded 57 million tourists. Out of that number, Barcelona, where the RI conference was held – a very beautiful city- had more than 43 million tourists!

The Nigerian government must find a way to build and manage its reputation through a strategic approach. Whoever is in charge must understand the concepts of corporate reputation and branding. Such a person must work very closely with the President (as is done in companies) and the key ministers of government. Indeed the Country’s Chief Reputation Officer (CCRO) is the President himself. What he says or does adds or subtracts from the country’s reputation.

If the President truly leads by example, if he truly fights corruption, if he is truly in effective control of governance, if he truly promotes rule of law – all these will enhance the country’s reputation. That means that the minister or special adviser in charge of the country’s image/reputation must be the President’s and the Government’s key advisor. Indeed, like in the companies, he must exercise some level of oversight on all ministries and agencies of government, and report directly to the President.

The government in Spain for instance, takes the country’s reputation very seriously. Two years ago, Spain found itself on the throes of serious economic crisis. The government appointed a Minister in charge of Brand Spain. The Minister, Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros addressed us at the conference and spoke very strongly on the strategies the government devised to rebuild the reputation of Spain and keep tourists coming in again. Spain was on the 18th position in the 2011 reputation ranking. In 2013, they moved up to 16th position. This was not achieved by mere sloganeering that Spain is good, come to Spain!

Monteros told the conference that his office monitors every credible reputation ranking, every important newspaper article about Spain, every comment about Spain by critical stakeholders, every report of any misbehaviour of any government official or agency — and follows up to ensure that the right things are done. He was not employed as an attack dog. Monteros also ensures that good things about Spain – its strengths—are communicated effectively through various channels in many parts of the world, especially the G-8 countries where the major economic decisions of the world are made.

I have a story to illustrate my point: When I arrived Barcelona Airport on June 4, my luggage was missing. I reported at the airport’s help desk. The officer in charge promptly contacted the airline which promised to deliver my luggage that evening. The officer went further to contact my hotel to confirm my reservation. Thereafter, she asked me to go to my hotel and wait for the luggage, which she promised would be delivered to me the next day in my hotel. By the time I got to my hotel, the information was already on display. And as promised, the next day, my luggage was delivered to me in good condition. The system worked for me; and I felt even better about Spain.

Nigeria has a lot to learn from the Reputation Institute and Spain!

Bayern Munich humiliate Barcelona to reach Wembley final

Rampant Bayern Munich roared into the UEFA Champions League final as Barcelona were humiliated 3-0 at Camp Nou and 7-0 on aggregate in their semi-final showdown.

Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller and a comical Gerard Pique own goal completed a miserable night for the Catalan giants, who left Lionel Messi on the bench and never threatened to rewrite history as they were second best again to the outstanding Bundesliga champions.

Bayern’s comprehensive triumph means that it will be an all-German final at Wembley on May 25, with Borussia Dortmund having seen off the challenge of Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Tito Vilanova’s men, who clearly felt Messi was not fit enough after his recent hamstring injury, were nearly caught out in the 12th minute when Bastian Schwinsteiger’s ball over the top sent Robben racing clear, only for Pique to slide in with a perfectly-timed challenge.

And the centre-back was called into action once again soon after as Robben and Schweinsteiger combined to set up captain Philipp Lahm, with another sliding tackle taking ball and man as the full-back prepared to shoot.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was called into action in the 24th minute as he had to be alert to tip over his crossbar after Pedro’s lightning turn and shot from long range.

Xavi had a glorious chance to reduce the significant deficit as Cesc Fabregas diverted Daniel Alves’ curling cross back to his team-mate just outside the six-yard box, but the Spain international could only hook his volley over the top.

Bayern were following the mantra that attack is the best form of defence, with another Robben burst creating a three-on-three attack but his decision to shoot with team-mates well placed allowed Alex Song to block.

The tie was effectively settled early in the second period as Robben was found in space on the right flank and he was allowed to cut inside by Adriano onto his favoured left foot before curling a delightful finish beyond Victor Valdes’ despairing dive.

David Villa attempted an immediate response for Barca, who now faced impossible mission of scoring six, but his shot was off target, before Franck Ribery played in Robben only for his attempted shot to drift wide with Mario Mandzukic unmarked to his right.

Pique inadvertently added to Barcelona’s humiliation as he could only connect with Ribery’s dangerous with his knee to divert it beyond Valdes and into the back of the net.

And their misery was completed soon after as Ribery burst away from Song to lift a teasing cross to the far post where Thomas Muller arrived to head home 14 minutes from time.

ENYEAMA REVEALS: I was trained by Barca coach for AFCON

Assistant Captain of the Super Eagles, Vincent Enyeama has told SportingLife that he was knocked to shape by coaches from Barcelona, Israel and Turkey and also surrendered the winning of the 2013 AFCON to almighty God.

Soccer fans in South Africa have been amazed and thrilled by the awesome form of the Israel based goalkeeper who has been the stand-in Super Eagles Captain since Nigeria’s match against Ethiopia.

He, however, confessed to SportingLife that it was as a result of hard one month training in the hands of coaches from Barcelona, Israel and Turkey that brought out the best in him in the on-going 2013 AFCON in South Africa.

“I will give much credit to my coaches because I had coaches from Barcelona, Israel and Turkey they really helped me. We had one month training together before the commencement of the final build up for the Nations Cup,” he said.

He also declared that he has never worried about rejection and condemnation from Nigerians most especially when he was not having good games since he is aware of the emotional attachment of Nigerians to football.

“ It is not a new thing to be criticized by Nigerians. I was criticized before coming to the Nations Cup but I thank God for where we are today. I am used to this because I have played for this country for 11 years and I can tell how we react to matches and results. When you make a mistake my people will come down hard on you pom, pom, pom,” he said with laughter.

He was also spiritual about Nigeria’s chances of winning the AFCON Trophy. “God is author and finisher of everything if He wishes us to win we will win, if not there is nothing we can do about it,” he added.

uper Eagles ace and Spartak Moscow forward Emmanuel Emenike for the side ahead of today’s Champions league cracker against Spanish giants Barcelona

Emenike, who was active upfront in the Super Eagles’ battle of Monrovia against the Lone Stars recently in an AFCON 2013 tie, has been tipped among players that will shine in today’s showdown at the Camp Nou.

The curent form of the former Fenerbahce ace who moved to Spartak Moscow for 10million Euros in July 2011 has been a source of delight to the team’s coaching crew led by Unai Emery.

Emenike, who replaced Artem Dzyuba against Kuban, scoring to help the team run away with a 2-2 draw away, looks good to get starting a shirt as Emery has declared his desire to achieve a good result playing away not withstanding, revealing that he will stick to his usual 4-2-3-1 formation.

Although Moscow are considered formidable, fans and readers who predicted possible scores ahead of the match gave Barca an 87% chance of wining by goal margins ranging from 4-0 to 8-0. Spartak Moscow, according to the prediction, have an 11.8% chance of winning while only 1.2% voted for a draw.
