    Two die in Bauchi auto crash

    Two persons died while three others sustained injuries in an auto crash on Bauchi – Jos Road in Bauchi State on Saturday.

    DSP Haruna Mohammed, Police Public Relations Officer, made this known in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Bauchi on Sunday.

    The statement said the accident occurred when two vehicles moving in opposite directions had a head-on collision at Nabordo village.

    ‎It named the vehicles involved as Toyota Counter with Reg. No. FS 276 LND, driven by Mamuda Lawal, 45, of Nabordo town and a Red Sharon Toyota vehicle with Reg. No. XA 913 MAG. ‎

    ‎The statement said the two drivers died at the scene while those injured had been taken to Toro General Hospital for treatment.

    Those injured included PTE Amaele Chibuike, Special Force Batallion, Markurdi, Abdullsalam Ibrahim, 50, Ilorin West Council of Kwara State and Mercy Gabriel, corps member and her two children.

    ‎“The police also recovered a military colour bag containing 864 live and one expended ammunitions.’’

    The police also said a Joint Police/Vigilante Group, acting on intelligence report, recovered a General Purpose Machine Gun with No L37A2UE84A7119 at Jenge Forest, Bauchi.

    It added that all cases were being investigated by the command.

  • Five dead in Bauchi flood, says agency

    Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said yesterday that the heavy rain from last Friday and Monday claimed five lives.

    Two of the victims were from Dambam Local Government in Bauchi Central and three from Tafawa Balewa Council in Bauchi South.

    A SEMA official, Abubakar Umar, said: “In Dambam Local Government on August 16, following a downpour, which caused the washing away of houses and farm land, the daughters of Hamisu Saleh, Salamatu, 7, and Halima, 4, were carried away by flood when their house collapsed.

    “Their mother, Hamisu, sustained injuries. She also fainted, but was revived in hospital.”

    SEMA’s interim report said 600 houses were washed away.

    Relief materials, such as rice, corn, guinea corn, clothes, mattresses among others, have been sent to the victims.

  • ACF mourns Bauchi monarch

    Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has expressed shock at the death of a Bauchi State monarch, the Emir of Misau, Alhaji Muhammadu Manga III, who died on Monday.

    The northern socio-cultural group, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim, said: “ACF learnt with total submission to the will of Allah (SWT), the death of the Emir of Misau, Alhaji Muhammadu Manga III, on Monday.”

    It described the late monarch, who ascended the throne in 1979, as a promoter of peaceful coexistence.

    The statement reads: “The late Emir aged 79 had been on the throne since 1979. He devoted his life to the progress of his people in agriculture, education and socio-economic development of the Misau Emirate and Bauchi State.

    Bauchi to review anti-poaching laws

    The Bauchi State government has vowed to review its anti-poaching laws. It has also partnered with Czech Republic to  develop  its tourism and agricultural  potentials.

    A statement by the Director of  Press, Government House Bauchi, Ibrahim Sani,  quoted the  Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar  as saying  during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that  the  partnership will focus on wild life conservation and anti-poaching measures in the state  based on global best practices.

    “ Governor Abubakar, who led a government delegation to the Czech Republic, held series of meetings with technical partners where several important issues and decisions on the partnership were discussed.

    “The agreements focused on development of the famous Yankari Game Reserve and Sumu Wild life as well as other conservation potentials of the state.

    “On agriculture, the state delegation to the Czech Republic held wide consultations with establishments that include officials of Ministry of Agriculture where assurance was made on cooperation and assistance to the state and indeed Nigeria at large. These include how to develop the state small and medium scale farming using affordable and easy to maintain methods where Youth and other Stakeholders would be involved.

    “The Bauchi State delegation was also at the Department of Tropical Agriculture, Life Sciences University Prague, Czech Republic to discuss on cooperation with the Bauchi State University in areas of Lecturers and Students exchange programme as well as establishing Faculty of Agriculture among others.

  • Flood destroys 418 houses in Bauchi

    Four hundred and eighteen houses have been destroyed by flood in Misau, Darazo and Tafawa Balewa local government areas of Bauchi State, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has said.

    The flood also damaged belongings worth N70 million.

    The Secretary of the Humanitarian Coordination team of SEMA, Alhaji Abubakar Umar, who confirmed this to our correspondent in Bauchi, said: “There were no casualties.”

    He said: “Eighty homes were destroyed in Misau Local Government, with 197 farms submerged. Rice, guinea corn, maize, groundnut and millet were affected.

    “In Darazo Council, 338 homes were washed away.”

    Umar said over 13 communities in Tafawa Balewa Local Government were affected by the flood.

    According to him, the crops washed away in the council included sweet potato, rice, guinea corn, corn, millet, groundnut, pepper and others.

    He said SEMA, in collaboration with other stakeholders, was working to ensure that relief materials were given to the victims.

    The secretary, who said most of the victims were taking refuge in the homes of their relatives, advised people not to build houses on water ways.

    The Disaster Management Coordinator of the Nigeria Red Cross Society, Mr. Yahaya Inuwa Bello, said the organisation had carried out sensitisation campaigns through its divisional offices in Itas- Gadau, Zaki and Gamawa local governments, as part of efforts to reduce the level of damage caused by flood.

     

     

  • 28-year-old woman found dead in Bauchi

    The Bauchi State Police Command yesterday arrested a 30-year-old man, Nasiru Usman Banki and a woman for the alleged death of his girlfriend in Bauchi.

    The command’s spokesman, Haruna Mohammed, told The Nation in Bauchi that the deceased, Ikilima Alhassan, 28, of Bukuru village in Plateau State visited her boyfriend, Banki, who lives at Rafin Makaranta on the Bauchi-Kano Road, behind Awala Hotel, Bauchi at an undisclosed date and time.

    According to police investigation, trouble began when the deceased met Banki in his home with his girlfriend, Fatima Baba Isa, aged 22.

    Haruna said Fatima is a resident of Makera ward in the Bauchi metropolis and is a live-in lover to Banki.

    He said the ladies fought in the apartment, which resulted in Ikilima’s death.

    Haruna added: “On August 9 about 12:50am, a woman was found unconscious on the Maiduguri bypass, near Awalah roundabout, Bauchi by a patrol team.

    “The police team, attached to the Tafawa Balewa Housing Estate Division, went to the scene and conveyed her body to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi (ATBU), where she was certified dead.”

    Ikilima’s body has been deposited at the ATBU morgue for post-mortem.

    The police said the deceased’s boyfriend has been arrested and is helping in investigation.

    87 killed in Bauchi accident, says FRSC

    •377 injured 

    Eighty-seven people  died, while 377 were injured between January and June in Bauchi State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said.

    A copy of the FRSC road crash report for the period obtained by The Nation in Bauchi showed that there were 94 road crashes across the 20 local governments, involving 719 people.

    These included 67 children, with seven of them killed. Thirty-three were injured.

    The report showed that 154 vehicles were involved in the accidents.

    It said the highest number of deaths was recorded in January, with 35 people killed and 61 injured in 13 accidents involving 130 people.

    June had the second highest number of casualties, with 13 killed and 59 injured in 18 accidents involving 141 people.

    The report showed that May had the least number of casualties, with seven people killed and 57 injured in 13 accidents involving 94 people.

    Addressing reporters in his office in Bauchi, the Sector Commander, Ibrahim Abubakar, said the corps had made efforts to reduce accidents.

    He said crashes had reduced, except on Bauchi-Gombe and Bauchi-Jos roads. His words: “Road crashes in Bauchi have been on the low side, except on Bauchi-Gombe and Bauchi-Jos roads. These are places with almost daily crashes.

    “The culprits are the Opel Vectra drivers. They are responsible for almost all the head-on collision on these high ways.

    “Next to them are the Hummer bus drivers. I don’t know what is always the problem, but I think it is mostly drivers’ loss of control.”

    Abubakar said the FRSC had offices in only 234 of the 744 councils in the country.

    He urged the Federal Government to equip the FRSC with more workers and logistics to ensure safety on roads.

    The sector commander said the five area commands had two functional operational vehicles each, adding that more were needed.

  • Bauchi: Flood destroy houses,crops worth N46.16m

    Houses and crops worth N46.16 million have been destroyed by flood in Misau town and surrounding villages in Bauchi State.

    Alhaji Ado Aska, Chairman, Misau Local Government Council in the state, made this known in Misau on Saturday, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    Aska disclosed that the incident, which occurred on July 28, destroyed 197 houses and crops worth N38.77 million in Misau town.

    He explained that 52 houses and crops worth N7.39 million were also destroyed by the flood in Firko and Kafin Sule villages in the suburbs of Misau town.

    He said that persons displaced by the flood had taken refuge with their relations in various locations within Misau Town.

    The chairman attributed the incident to poor drainage facilities, coupled with the porous nature of the soil within Misau town its environs environs.

    He said that officials from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), had visited the affected and promised to assist with relief materials.

  • Bauchi to upgrade Yankari Game Reserve

    Bauchi to upgrade Yankari Game Reserve

    The Bauchi State government has pledged to upgrade the Yankari Game Reserve to an international tourist destination.

    The deputy governor of the state, Nuhu Gidado, made the pledge while inspecting facilities at the park with top government functionaries and some professionals in the state.

    Nuhu Gidado said the Wikki Warm Spring and the game reserve are some of the natural endowments that would be redesigned in such a way that the natural flow creates scenic beauty.

    He expressed optimism that the hotel accommodation at the reserve which requires some improvement would be of international standard, adding that both the animal game viewing and the museum treasure are going to be the centres of attraction to both European and American tourists.

    The deputy governor directed the management of the reserve to develop a comprehensive staff audit with the view to developing their skills and professionalism, pointing out that the report has indicated that the previous administrations neglected the aspect.

    The General Manager of the park, Mr. Yohanna Y. Namchi, briefed the deputy governor that the most critical areas of administration that require immediate and quick intervention are game viewing facilities.

    Yohanna assured the deputy governor that investment in the reserve would be money well invested.
