  • Thugs disrupt Bauchi House of Assembly

    Political thugs  compelled members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly (BAHA) to adjourn abruptly on Monday. The thugs literally  poured into the chambers, disrupting the the swearing-in of other principal officers of the house.

    The forced adjournment came few mimutes after the the Speaker of the 8th Bauchi  House of Assembly, Hon. Kasuwar Shehu Damina, was sworn-in by Clerk of the House, Abdulkadir Jafar.

    Also sworn-in was Abdulmuminin Bala Fatti Pali from Alkaleri Local Government Area.

    However, it took the timely intervention of the police to prevent the situation from getting out of hand. The police dispersed the thugs with the aid of tear-gas.

    Besides disrupting the proclamation ceremony, the thugs who were said to be supporters of some of the state lawmakers, also picked pockets of some guests.

    Among those who were victims of the thugs was the Majority Leader Hon Aminu Mohammed Tukur representing Burra/Lere in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area (LGA), whose expensive cell-phone was forcefully snatched from his hand.

    Accepting to lead the state lawmakers Damina, an experienced administrator and a two-term chairman of Darazo LGA  in the 1980s, assured “I will be just and fair.”

    He also said: “I will ensure that we make laws that will improve the living conditions of Bauchi people. I will work for the welfare of every- body, including honourable members and the staff of the assembly.”

    The 31-member Bauchi State House of Assembly has one member from Peoples’ Democratic Movement (PDM) and two from Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), while the remaining 28 seats were won by the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC ).

    Among those present at the swearing-in ceremony include:  Senators Suleman Naxif Gamawa (Bauchi North), Ali Wakili (Bauchi South) and Isa Hamman Misau (Bauchi Central).

    Others are: former Deputy Governor, Alhaji Garba Gadi, who was elected alongside former Governor Isa Yuguda, but was impeached, when Yuguda decamped to the PDP. Some members of the  House of Representatives from the state, as well as the state APC chairman, Uba Ahmed Nana and other party chieftains were also present.

    APC wins governorship election in Bauchi

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Bauchi State, Mohammed  Abubakar, was on Sunday declared winner of the state governorship election.

    Announcing the result of the election on Sunday in Bauchi, the Reurning Officer, Prof. Mohammed Faruk, said Abubakar polled 654,934 votes, to defeat nine other contestants.

    His closest opponent, Mr Mohammed Jatau of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), secured 282,650 votes.

    Declaring Abubakar as the winner, Prof. Faruk said that the APC candidate had satisfied Section 179(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, having garnered highest number of total votes cast, and also secured the minimum number of votes required in each of the 20 Local Government Areas of the state.

    With official announcement of the result, the state now has Barr. Mohammed Abubakar as the governor-elect, with Nuhu Gidado , as his deputy.

    Abubakar, born on 11th Dec.1956,attended Native Authority Primary School, Jos and Tudun Wada Primary School, Kano, from 1963 to 1969; Government College, Kano, 1970 to 1974.

    In 1974, he enrolled for the one year programme  of the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, after which, upon successful completion of the programme, gained admission into the institution to study law in 1975.

    The governor-elect completed his law studies in 1978, attended the Nigeria Law School from 1978 to 1979, had his mandatory National Youth Service Corps  and joined the services of Bauchi state government as a Pupil State Council, Ministry of Justice.

    Key positions he held while serving with the state government were Head of Legal Drafting Department, Bauchi State House of Assembly (1983), Director, Public Prosecution, Ministry of Justice (1988) and Commissioner of Justice (1990 to 1993.

    He was also the Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association, Bauchi State,from 1996 to 1998.

    After leaving the services of the state government, Abubakar was at different times, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kogi, Delta, Plateau and Rivers , and afterwards elevated to the position of National Commissioner in charge of Borno, Jigawa and Yobe.

    The deputy-governor –elect, Nuhu Gidao, was born on 5th October, 1958.

    He attended the then prestigious Barewa College, Zaria, from where he proceeded to ABU Zaria to bag a degree in Building Engineering.

  • PDP Councilor clubbed to death in Bauchi

    A councilor in, Bogoro Local Government area of Bauchi State Mr. Musa Daniel was clubbed to death by  youths while he was on electoral duty yesterday.

    Chairperson of the Local Government Ms. Hassana Arkila described Daniel’s death as unfortunate and the handiwork of saboteurs of democracy.

    She vowed that the culprits would be brought to book, adding “I want to confirm the death of a PDP councilor who was beaten to death by irate youths. I am also assuring the People of Bauchi State that the full wrath of law will catch up with the attackers, sooner than they would think.”

    A young man was shot dead by security agents at Alikazaure, Jos, the Plateau state capital for allegedly trying to snatch a ballot box and disrupt voting.

    An eye witness said the deceased had earlier been warned by the security agents to keep off but he refused to relent.

    Chairperson of Bogoro Local Government area, Bauchi state Ms.Hassana Arkila has confirmed the death of a serving Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) councilor representing  Gizaki/Badagari ward , Bogoro local council,Mr Musa Daniel.

    The late Musa Daniel was said to have been clubbed to death by angry youth while on electoral duty, in the local government Saturday April 11, 2015.

    Arkila described the death of the councilor as unfornate saying the incident is the handwork of saboteurs of democracy, adding; ” I want to confirm the death of a PDP councilor  who was beaten to death by irate youths. l am also assuring the People of  Bauchi state  that the full wrath of law will catch up with the attackers, sooner than they would think”.

    Though, the Bogoro council Chairperson did not give reasons for the death of the councillor who is servíng under her, it was learnt the incident was not unconnected to Saturday’s governorship and state Assembly elections, in the area.

    Efforts to have the Bauchi state Police Command spokesman, DSP Haruna Mohammed to comment on the death of the Councillor was not successful as he neither responded to four text messages and several phone calls to his cell phone at the time of this report.

    She however “urged the perpetrators of the inhuman act to embrace peace because violence is not a solution to political difference” noting that “the death of the councilor is a signal that the APC is afraid of losing the electoral process” charging  PDP supporters not to react to the killing.

    Victory celebration death: Buhari visits families in Bauchi

    THE President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday in Bauchi re-assured the citizenry that he will not betray them.

    He gave the assurance while on a condolence visit to the state and families of some youths, who died while celebrating his victory at the polls.

    Gen. Buhari, who was accompanied by All Progressive Congress (APC ) National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Gen. Abdurahaman DanBazau and other party chieftains, asked Bauchi voters “to elect the APC governorship candidate, Mohammed Abubakar, and the party’s state House of Assembly’s candidates for effective change.”

    The president-elect, who was received at the Indoor Multi-purpose Sports Hall by many supporters,  thanked Bauchi people for their continuous love for him.

    His words: “I have been here three times before. I was here in 2003, 2007 and 2011. And each time, I always get a sizeable number of votes. And this time too, you have shown the same and I am happy and grateful.

    “I have also come to ask you to vote for APC governorship candidate and House of Assembly candidates, because this will make things easier for the administration to implement its policies and programmes”.

    Lauding the Bauchi people, Odigie-Oyegun said: “We know the last election was not easy, but you gave APC 100 per cent. And I am asking you to give APC 100 per cent again”.

    The state APC governorship candidate explained that  the president-elect was in Bauchi for condolence visit and urged the state’s voters to elect “all APC candidates” on Saturday.

    He assured that APC would not betray the electorate.

    The state APC Chairman, Uba Ahmed Nana, appealed to “Nigerians to continue to pray for Nigeria and Gen. Buhari, since the task before him is heavy. But with your prayers, he will succeed”.

    Gen. Buhari left Bauchi for Gombe State after a personal condolence visit to the bereaved families, including those that were injured.

    Emir of Bauchi is Crescent pro-chancellor

    Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State has appointed the Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Adamu as its fourth Pro-Chancellor.

    The announcement was made during the ninth founder’s day lecture of the university, which coincided with the 81st birthday of its founder, Prince Bola Ajibola.

    Prince Ajibola described the new pro-chancellor as a round peg in a round hole, stressing that he was thankful to Almighty God who made the University a ‘united Nigeria’ in terms of the diversified nature of its students’ spread across all states of the country.

    The former jurist at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), said part of the vision of the university was to unite the North and South of the country for the future in order that students who lived, worked and played together on campus would be able to live in peace and harmony in different geo-political zones of the country.

    Delighted by the university’s progress, the new Pro-chancellor pledged to contribute his quota to the development of the university and “to serve as a bridge between our people for unity and progress of our nation”.

    The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibraheem Gbajabiamila, said the university had produced more first-class female students, noting that crescent University was poised to nurture female students to better the society at large.

    APC clears National Assembly seats in Bauchi

    ONE of the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidates in Bauchi State, Isa Hamman Misau, has stopped Senate Leader Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi’s bid to return to the Senate.

    The Collation Officer for the Bauchi Central, Dr. Mohammed Salisu Yakubu, while declaring the results yesterday evening, said Misau scored 208, 741 votes while Senator Ningi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 57, 172 votes.

    The results of the Bauchi North Senatorial zone showed that Senator Nazif Suleman Gamawa defeated Alhaji Faruq Mustapha of the PDP to secure the Senate seat.

    The INEC Collation Officer for the  Bauchi North election, Dr. Muhammed Adamu, who  declared the result in Azare, headquarters of the senatorial  headquarters  yesterday at about 7.40pm, said Gamawa polled 197, 919 votes, to beat Mustapha, who scored  97,047 votes.

    Also, Ahmed Yerima of the APC, who contested for the Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency, scored 59,359 votes to emerge winner.

    INEC Returning Officer Dr. Abdullahi Abdulhamid announced that Yerima defeated the candidates of the PDP, Abdullahi Gwaram, and Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) Ibrahim Makama, who scored 13,153 and 2,457.

    Also yesterday, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammed-Baba of the APC won the Katagum Federal Constituency House of Representatives election.

    Returning Officer for the House of Representatives election in the constituency, Darazo/Ganjuwa, Mohammed Mohammed, declared in Azare that Muhammed-Baba of the APC polled 38,151 votes, to win his opponent, Alhaji Auwalu Gwalabe of the PDP, who scored 23,535 votes.

    The  INEC Returning Officer for Darazo/Ganjuwa  Dr. Sabo  Hamma  has declared that APC candidate Haliru Jika scored 78,243 votes to beat PDP candidate Mustapha Hassan to win the Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency seat.

    Senator Suleiman Nazif of All Progressive Congress (APC), has won the Bauchi North Senatorial District seat.

    Declaring the result in Azare, headquarters of the District on Monday, the INEC Returning Officer for the Senatorial election in the Zone, Dr Muhammed Adamu  said that Nazif polled 197, 919 votes, to beat his opponents, Alhaji Faruq Mustapha of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Okolo Jujiana of the NPPP, who scored 97,047 and 974  votes respectively.

    In another development, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammed-Baba of the All Progressive Congress (APC), has won the Katagum Federal Constituency House of Representatives election.

    Returning Officer for the House of Representatives election in the constituency, Mohammed Mohammed, declared on Monday in Azare that Muhammed-Baba polled 38, 151 votes, to defeat his opponent, Alhaji Awalu Gwalabe of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 23, 535 votes.

    He described the election as the “most peaceful,  free, fair and orderly ever conducted in the country.”APC candidates Nazifi, Mohammed-Baba, win Bauchi North District, Katagum Federal Constituency.

  • Gunmen storm polling unit, set materials ablaze in Bauchi

    Some unidentified gunmen on Saturday stormed a polling unit in Bagurun Primary School of Darazo local government area of Bauchi state, firing gunshots sporadically into the air and forcing voters to scamper for safety.

    This is contained in a statement signed by the spokesman of the Bauchi State Police Command, DSP Haruna Mohammed, and made available to newsmen.

    The statement said the gunmen arrived at the place in six vehicles and thereafter gathered all election materials and set some of them ablaze.

    “The timely intervention of combined security forces, comprising the Police and Army, forced the suspects to abandon their mission and escape to unknown destination,

    “This enabled the electorate to put off the fire and save both the sensitive and non-sensitive materials.

    “Normalcy was restored in the area and the electorate continued casting their votes unhindered under tight security,” he said.

    Mohammed also confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old man, Abdul Umar, in possession of a locally made pistol, seen loitering around Katako ward of Warji town in the state.

    The statement said Abdullahi Samaila and Nasiru Adamu also found in possession of 29 permanent voter cards at Marga Primary School Polling Unit of Ganjuwa local government area were also arrested.

    According to the statement, INEC Smart Card Reader machine and some election materials at Jauro Gani Village Polling Unit of  Alkaleri local government area of the state were snatched by unknown persons.

    However, the Community Head of Goro area of Dutse Alhaji in Bwari Area Council of Abuja, Mr Abubakar Bako, said the 2015 elections could turn out to be the country’s best.

    Bako, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the electorate had shown unparallel zeal to ensure their votes counted.

    He said the elections had put an end to voter apathy and complacent toward politics by the people.

    “What we are witnessing today in this community is unprecedented and we hope to keep flame burning.

    “The turnout is so impressive because since I began participating in elections this has been the most participated,’’ he said.

    Mr Bryan Sims, an international election observer, expressed displeasure on the attitude of some of the electoral officers.

    “In Abuja city, there were incidences of late delivery of INEC materials and these had caused the delay in the process in some areas.’’

    He, however, described voters’ calmness to expression of maturity and readiness to nurture the country’s democracy.
