  • Custody row: Bauchi Commissioner accused of abducting daughter

Custody row: Bauchi Commissioner accused of abducting daughter

    • No, I didn’t, says Zaki

The Bauchi State Commissioner for Water Resources, Nuhu Zaki, has been accused of abducting his 10-year-old biological daughter, Zainab.

The Nation reports that Zaki is embroiled in a custody battle with Zainab’s maternal grandmother, Ikilima Manu Soro.

Soro had   petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, over alleged abduction of her granddaughter, Zainab, by the Commissioner.

The petition, written by Chris Umar, SAN and Co, accused Zaki of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, obstruction of justice and disobedience of a court order.

According to the petition, Zaki divorced Iklima when she was seven months pregnant and abandoned his daughter until she was 10 years old.

The petitioner alleges that Zaki, with the help of two unknown persons who reportedly disguised as Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and police officers, abducted Zainab from her school bus on January 21, 2025.

This act, the petition claims, was in blatant disobedience of the court order and existing laws.

Zaki, however, denied the allegations, stating that he has the right to his daughter both religiously and constitutionally.

He claimed to have obtained judgments in his favour from three different courts but was denied access to his daughter.

Zaki asserts that his daughter chose to live with him and her siblings after her mother remarried.

He insisted that he was only enforcing court judgments granting him custody of his daughter.

But the mother’s lawyers are urging the IGP to investigate the matter discreetly and ensure that Zaki does not escape justice.

They also requested that charges be proffered against him to serve as a deterrent to others.

Reacting to the petition filed to the IGP in an interview with journalists at his residence on Saturday, the Commissioner for Water Resources wondered how a father could be accused of abducting his own legitimate child over whom he holds both religious and constitutional rights.

According to him, after Zainab’s mother remarried, the young girl expressed a desire to live with her father.

Zaki said further that his other children also pleaded on her behalf, emphasizing her longing to be with her biological family.

Zaki recalled that his marriage to Zainab’s mother was conducted under Islamic law but eventually broke down due to irreconcilable differences with her family.

“It was not my intention to divorce my wife, because we loved each other. But pressure from her family, especially her two brothers and their mother, made it impossible to continue, forcing her to leave,” he said.

The commissioner commended the efforts of the late Manu Soro, Zainab’s grandfather, and other family members who tried to reconcile the couple, even after their first divorce.

However, he claimed that persistent opposition from certain family members frustrated these efforts.

Zaki alleged that despite securing favorable judgments from three different courts, he was repeatedly denied access to his daughter.

“Now that her mother is remarried and my daughter is no longer comfortable staying with her maternal grandmother, she chose to live with me and her siblings.

What’s wrong with that? They’re making unnecessary trouble for no just cause,” he stated.

He added that he did not kidnap his daughter, saying “I only enforced the judgments of the courts and the Shariah Commission.

“Zainab Nuhu Zaki is my daughter, and I have claimed her.

“She is now in boarding school with three of her sisters, and nothing will change that.”

He also vowed to protect all his 29 children within the bounds of the law and Islamic principles, regardless of who is involved.

Zaki dismissed the abduction petition filed by Ikilima Manu Soro as baseless, unfounded and unfortunate, urging the family to stop pursuing what he described as a futile case.

Meanwhile, the matter is currently before the Sharia Court of Appeal, and the State High Court has reportedly barred the police from getting involved, citing it as a matrimonial issue.

Three abducted children trafficked to Anambra reunite with families in Bauchi

Three children abducted from Bauchi State and sold in Anambra State have been successfully rescued and reunited with their families through the joint efforts of the Bauchi and Anambra State Police Commands, supported by the Office of the First Lady and the Gender-Based Violence Committee.

The handover ceremony took place at the Bauchi Government House, where Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Auwal Musa, briefed Governor Bala Mohammed on the successful operation.

The children, who were abducted from Bauchi Metropolis in December, were trafficked to Anambra State for sale by an unidentified individual.

According to sources, the suspect, a woman who had recently moved to the Gwallameji area of Bauchi, trafficked her neighbours’ children shortly after her relocation. The woman disappeared with the children, leaving no trace behind.

Following an investigation, which revealed that one of the children was being sold for ₦2 million, the police teams in Bauchi and Anambra states launched coordinated efforts.

Commissioner Auwal Musa confirmed that the children were rescued along with some individuals involved in the crime, although the prime suspect remains at large.

Governor Bala Mohammed expressed deep appreciation to the security agencies and the First Ladies of Bauchi and Anambra States for their dedication to ending child trafficking.

The governor also lamented the rise in child abductions for sale, recalling a similar case from two years ago.

He called for the swift prosecution of those responsible, urging the Attorney General and the Chief Judge to expedite the case.

He attributed the rise in such crimes to poverty, parental neglect, and the infiltration of criminals into the state.

Presidency slams Bauchi governor’s ‘divisive rhetoric’ on tax reform

The Presidency yesterday criticised Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for the ‘divisive rhetoric’ he used last week to describe the Tax Reform plan of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Presidency took exception to the portion of the governor’s statement where he said “We will show President Tinubu our true color”.

It described it as lacking in statesmanship and counterproductive to fostering national unity.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Communications, Sunday Dare, reacting on his X handle yesterday, said: “This kind of rhetoric is divisive and undermines the collaborative spirit needed between state governments and the Federal Government to address the pressing challenges facing our nation.”

The Presidency highlighted Bauchi State’s significant financial benefits under President Tinubu’s administration, including N144 billion in Federation Account Allocations—the highest in the state’s history.

These funds include allocations for local governments and a special N2 billion intervention aimed at enhancing food security.

“It is worth noting that Bauchi State has been a key beneficiary of Federation Account Allocations, yet the state continues to struggle with poverty and underdevelopment.

“Instead of issuing threats, the governor should focus on using these resources to improve the lives of his people”, Dare said.

Dare further outlined the advantages of the Tax Reform Bills, emphasising their potential to reduce the burden on small businesses, boost agricultural productivity, and streamline tax collection processes.

“The Tax Reform Bills include provisions that directly benefit states like Bauchi, particularly its small business owners and farming communities. Governor Mohammed should embrace these reforms and leverage them to drive economic growth”, he said.

The Presidency called on Governor Mohammed to retract his statement and engage constructively with the Federal Government to address any concerns.

“At this critical moment in Nigeria’s development, leaders must demonstrate unity and a commitment to the collective good. Statements like these are not just unhelpful; they erode the trust and collaboration needed to move the nation forward”, he said.

Similarly, the Command has apprehended three suspects linked to a notorious armed robbery syndicate operating in the state.

The arrests followed a raid by a patrol team attached to the ‘C’ Divisional Police Headquarters in the Sabon Layi area.

The first suspect, 40-year-old Suleiman Adamu, popularly known as “Baba Mai Ruwa,” was arrested with a locally-made revolver, eight rounds of live ammunition, three expended ammunition of 7.62mm calibre, and two motorcycle number plates.

  • REA urges Bauchi to tap into $620m for mini-grid, solar

REA urges Bauchi to tap into $620m for mini-grid, solar

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) yesterday urged the Bauchi State to tap into the $410million for mini-grids and $210 million for the solar home system, totalling $620million.

Its managing director, Engr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu made the call to the Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed who led the state delegation in a working visit to the corporate Headquarters of the agency in Abuja.

He informed the governor that the funding window for the opportunity of developing renewable energy projects through the Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOS) will open in the next two weeks.

He urged the governor to attend a roundtable on renewable energy development in order to meet the developers from the private sector.

His words: “So we look forward to potentially having the state’s roundtable so that it’s not only us talking.

“We want the private sector to hear from you, to be there, show them this site, and get them to obtain this.

“Because in the next two weeks, the funding window will be open, and it’s first come, first served purpose.

“We amassed a total of $410 million for the mini green grants and $210 million for the solar home system.

“So we want the authority state to take as much as possible out of that funding.”

According to him, lack of access to electricity is on the increase because of the continuous rise in population.

He said the gap cost Nigeria N7 trillion to N25 trillion ($25 billion) to bridge.

“And that gap, your Excellency, is at a cost. It’s costing the country between 7 to 10 trillion Naira, which is about 25 billion US dollars annually, 5 to 7% of the country’s GDP,” he said.

Aliyu disclosed to the Governor that the state is highly endowed with natural resources such as sun and wind for viable renewable energy projects.

He also informed him that since Bauchi is an agrarian state, renewable energy will be of immense benefit to it.

Citing an example of Alkaleri Local Government, the REA boss said

This community has a potential of 1,585 potential connections for agricultural connection.

He said: “If you look at Bauchi, for example, focusing on just agriculture, if you take Alkaleri, there is a community in Alkaleri called Karya. This community has a potential of 1,585 potential connections for agricultural connection.”

He also told the governor about the Toro Local Government Area of the State which has 90 mini-grid sites that can be used to power about 800,000 people. He added that 335,000 can also be powered by mini-grids in the Local Government Area.

Aliyu said: “The local government alone in Bauchi has 90 mini-grid sites that can be used to power close to 800,000 individuals. Some 335,000 people can be powered by a mini-grid in Toro local government.”

Meanwhile, the Governor said the state population which would ordinarily have been seven million people has soared to 10 million because of the high level of migration to embrace the peaceful state.

He said the energy deficit in the state is so huge because it is becoming the most industrial area of the country owing to its huge solid mineral potential.

According to him, some investors have indicated interest from all over the world in developing the state as its agricultural sector is growing.

Continuing, he said: “We are really trying to bolster the possibility of our peasant farmers doing their best, exploit their potentials. And you know, as we said, without power, you cannot do anything.

“The SMEs ministry, we have established and looking for power. The cities, our metropolitan cities are looking for power. Even our utilities like water board, the hospitals, the schools, we have them in a cluster.”

The Governor said the state would look into the possibility of providing solar-powered machines for irrigation.

He said despite the window of funding for renewable energy available in REA, the state is ready to make its contribution to provide electricity for the people.

Mohammed said, “Of course, financing model that you have established is very, very encouraging. We are not just here as beggars with caps in our hands because of the grant.

“But we are ready also to make contributions so that at the end of the day, it is going to be very collaborative.”
