  • Bauchi’s neglect of education and health

Bauchi’s neglect of education and health

Sir: Bauchi State is facing a serious decline in both the education and health sectors. Having experienced three different administrations, it is clear that the current government is not prioritizing these essential areas for development.

Under Malam Isa Yuguda’s leadership, the state made significant strides in healthcare by sponsoring 40 students to study medicine abroad, with the expectation that they would return to serve the state. One of the beneficiaries, Dr. Usman Musa Sulaiman, now works at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital. However, the current administration has failed to sponsor even a single student to study medicine, whether abroad or within Nigeria.

Similarly, Barrister M.A. Abubakar’s administration also contributed to health education by sponsoring Bauchi indigenes to study at institutions such as Garu Institute College of Medical Technology, Malikiya College of Medical Technology, and College of Health Technology in Ningi. Yet again, the current administration has not provided such opportunities.

Reports show that Bauchi State has fewer than 20 medical doctors, and no steps have been taken by the government to resolve this critical shortage. This is a major issue that requires immediate attention.

The education sector has also been neglected. Before this administration came on board, Bauchi’s educational system was rated high, but that has now dropped. Schools across the state lack proper infrastructure, with many classrooms in poor condition, lacking benches; in all, the overall learning environment is unconducive. Previous governments supplied exercise books to school children in both primary and secondary schools, but this administration has not continued this practice.

Bauchi State has the highest number of out-of-school children in northern Nigeria, yet the government has done little to address this crisis. Instead, it has focused on projects like building flyovers, which many see as unnecessary.

While infrastructure development is important, the priority should be on roads that are truly needed such as those in rural areas like Lush and surrounding villages.

The current administration’s failure to address the pressing issues in the health and education sectors is a missed opportunity. These are the foundations of a prosperous future, and without serious intervention, Bauchi State’s development will remain stagnant.

The Chairman of Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence said the flag off was the beginning of a series of initiatives aimed at improving the overall quality of life in the district.

“This road construction is a manifestation of my dedication to pursuing projects that enhance the welfare as well as empowerment of our people.

“This is only the tip of the iceberg in our catalogue of programmes intended for Bauchi South. I am committed to rolling out similar initiatives throughout my term.

“I urge all stakeholders to work with us so that we can collectively foster the growth and development of our great district. May Allah help us,” Senator Buba added.

The legislator, however, appealed to residents to exercise patience as the ongoing projects progress, assuring of continued quality representation at the National Assembly.

  • Mass resignation of Bauchi varsity academic staff

Mass resignation of Bauchi varsity academic staff

Sir: The recent resignation of no fewer than 30 members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) in Bauchi State is an issue that requires immediate attention from the government. This exodus threatens not only the stability of the institution but also the quality of education in the region. It is imperative that the government takes this situation seriously and conducts a thorough investigation to understand the root causes.

Academic institutions are the backbone of any society, responsible for shaping the next generation of leaders and professionals. When such large numbers of academic staff leave their posts, it disrupts the entire academic programme. Students, who are the primary stakeholders, suffer the most as their education is put on hold. This resignation crisis at SAZU could have far-reaching consequences on both the university and the broader education sector in Bauchi State.

The departure raises several concerns. It signals a deep-seated problem within the university system. Mass resignations rarely happen without a strong reason, and it is unlikely that all 30 individuals left simultaneously without common grievances. These grievances could range from poor working conditions to disagreements with the university’s management. Whatever the reasons, it is crucial that the government investigates the matter.

ASUU has consistently raised concerns about the working conditions in Nigerian universities. These concerns include inadequate pay, poor infrastructure, and a lack of support for research and academic development. If these issues are at the heart of the resignations at SAZU, it points to a broader systemic problem in Nigeria’s higher education system, which the government cannot afford to ignore.

There are also concerns that internal conflicts within the university’s management may have contributed to the resignations. If there are unresolved disputes between the university leadership and academic staff, it is essential that the government investigates these conflicts. The government should not only be concerned with the welfare of the students but also with ensuring that university management practices are fair, transparent, and conducive to a healthy academic environment. If the investigation reveals that the resignations were caused by poor management practices, the government must take action to restructure the university’s leadership. Universities should be places of learning, collaboration, and innovation, and any leadership practices that stifle these goals must be corrected.

Mass resignations are a symptom of a failing system, and without systemic changes, the problems facing SAZU could easily spread to other institutions. The government should prioritize reforms that improve the working conditions of academic staff, increase funding for research, and modernize university infrastructure.

In addressing the situation at SAZU, the government must also engage with ASUU. ASUU has been a vocal advocate for the rights of academic staff and the improvement of Nigeria’s education system. The government should work collaboratively with ASUU to identify the core issues affecting universities and implement solutions that benefit both staff and students.

The government must ensure that the investigation into the resignations is transparent and unbiased. An objective investigation will not only provide clarity on the issue but will also help restore confidence in the government’s commitment to improving education in Nigeria. Both academic staff and students need to see that the government is taking their concerns seriously and is willing to take action.

In the short term, the government must work with SAZU to mitigate the immediate effects of the resignations. This may include hiring temporary staff to fill the vacancies left by the ASUU members or reallocating resources to ensure that students’ education is not disrupted further. Ensuring that students can continue their studies without significant delays should be a top priority.

It is time for the government to take responsibility and show that it is committed to improving the state of higher education in Nigeria. Only through decisive action can the government ensure that SAZU remains a place of learning, growth, and opportunity for both staff and students.

Bauchi Emirate strips Senator of traditional title for ‘disrespecting’ Governor

The Bauchi Emirate Council has revoked the traditional title of Senator Shehu Buba Umar (Bauchi South) for allegedly ”disrespecting’  Governor Bala Mohammed.

Buba of the All Progressive Congress (APC) who held  the title of the ‘Mandarin Bauchi’ at a briefing held last week accused Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of diverting palliative items provided by the APC-led Federal Government.

The Senator was  reacting  to the Governor’s criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies.

The Senator claimed that essential supplies like rice, corn, and fertilizer meant to alleviate economic hardship in the state were allegedly sold by the state government instead of being distributed to the people.

However, in the letter dated August 14 by Nasiru Musa on behalf of the Emirate Council’s secretary, the Emirate Council disclosed  that the title withdrawal followed a council meeting yesterday , where Senator Umar’s alleged misconduct was discussed.

The council subsequently resolved to remove  him from his traditional role within the emirate, stating that such behavior contradicts the values and traditions upheld by the Bauchi Emirate.

Buba’s removal echoed a previous incident in January 2023 when the Emirate Council revoked the traditional title of a former Minister,  Bello Kirfi due to alleged disloyalty and disrespect toward Governor Bala Mohammed.
