Thugs beat Ondo Commissioner over bursary award

Commissioner representing Ondo Central in the Ondo State Oil Development Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Kehinde Akinrotoye, popularly known as ‘BonsueAketi’, has been hospitalised after he was beaten to pulp by hoodlums.

The thugs stormed the premises of OSOPADEC and disrupted the disbursement of bursary and scholarship award by the intervention agency.

They shot sporadically into the air after preventing the ceremony from taking off.

Staff of the agency and students scampered for safety.

One of the staff who pleaded anonymity said the hoodlums came in hired vehicles.

The staff said the thugs targeted the Commissioner and beat him to pulp after they accused him of being a misrepresentation in the commission because he hails from a non-oil producing area.

It was gathered that the vehicle that brought Akinrotoye was destroyed and vandalized by the hoodlums.

Men of the Ondo State Police Command were called in to restore normalcy.

In September, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Bunmi Osadahun, was attacked over distribution of palliatives.

  • And the beat goes on

The best of football in Europe is played during the Yuletide in England. While the rest of the continent marks the festive period with their families, the English game lights up the atmosphere so much so that players barely have time for Christmas with families. Twenty-four hours after Christmas, the players troop onto the pitch again, vying for points to lift their clubs out of the relegation zone or zooming to the zenith like we have seen with Liverpool FC. No less than six games are played during this period, with the peak of the pack being the New Year Day fixtures, which ended on Thursday night when defending champions, Manchester City halted Liverpool’s unbeaten run at the Etihad stadium with a 2-1 victory.

Pundits have argued that the Barclays English Premier League (EPL) matches are the ultimate to watch with their galaxy of stars drawn from across the globe. Others have ascribed the popularity of the English game to the country’s vibrant press, but many blaming the slow development of England’s Three Lions on the presence of foreigners in the EPL. They displace the English stars and the budding ones from their clubs. Let’s not talk about the mind-boggling figures paid to the stars weekly. They deserve whatever they are being paid, since the life span any athlete is 12 years, barring any career threatening injuries.

But the gauges for measuring the best European leagues are the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League Cup. Countries which dominate these competitions earn the bragging rights for this title, especially those leagues that win the trophies. For this last season, the Spaniards can beat their chests that the LaLiga is the best, having produced the club (Real Madrid) that won the UEFA Champions League and the Club World Cup. The Spaniards can stretch their swags by saying that Atletico Madrid, another Spanish side, clinched the Europa Cup and the Super Cup, a competition meant to determine the best European club for last season. Simply put, all European club soccer trophies are in Spain.

Will there be a paradigm shift in the teams that will win these trophies next year? It is very likely because key characters in the Real Madrid cruise are gone, leaving the Los Blancos tottering. King Cristiano Ronaldo and manager Zinedine Zidane’s exit has grossly affected the Galacticos’ playing style, although other Spanish sides, such as, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, can do better than the past winners.

Ronaldo has joined the Italia Serie A, taking his charm and records to the league that had lost its guile. Today, “Ronaldo? He is the man of the year,” Tuttosport wrote on its front page, which was dedicated totally to CR7, who reached a remarkable tally of 49 goals during the calendar year, second to Messi with 51.

Gazzetta dello Sport pointed out Juventus’ amazing record in Serie A. The Bianconeri have collected 101 points in the year and 53 of these in the first round of the current campaign. The numbers and form indicate that the team, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, is set to celebrate yet another title at the end of the season, perhaps even several weeks in advance.

Is Ronaldo obsessed with individual titles and trophies to the detriment of the team’s objectives? Ronaldo informed ‘’Sports Daily Records’’ Tuesday: ‘’I’m not obsessed by individual prizes. the most important thing is to win collective trophies and help the team, the rest comes naturally.’’

‘’I don’t think all the time of beating records. I work above all to help the club and be at my best level. the technical, tactical and physical level of all teams is better today. It is increasingly tough to win, so I have to keep working hard to stay on top, ‘’ Ronaldo said.

Is Lionel Messi missing Ronaldo’s exploits which pushed him to surpass CR7 in subsequent matches? How about the mind games between these incredibly great soccer players? for 10 years, Ronaldo and Messi dominated  soccer’s top prize – the Balon O’dor. This dominance was stopped this year by Lukas Modric, who also plays for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo recognises Messi as his biggest rival. He seizes every opportunity to throw jabs at the Argentine at least to create a media blitz which the Portuguese enjoys, if the issue is Messi and not tax offences and those surrounding his association with girls.

According to UK’s Daily Mirror, the Portuguese said: “I played in England, Spain, Italy, Portugal, in the national team while he is still in Spain. Maybe he needs me more. For me, life is a challenge, I like it and I like to make people happy. I would like him to come to Italy one day. Like me, accept the challenge.”

Messi’s response settled matters about both players playing in the same league again. He said: “Accepting Ronaldo’s challenge to join Italian football? I don’t need any change.”

“I’m at the best team in the world. My challenges are renewed year after year. I do not need to change teams or leagues to set new goals. I am at home and I do not need to change,” the Barcelona forward told Marca.

The exit of Buffon from Juventus was very emotional as the goalkeeper virtually spent his fruitful years in the game with the Old Ladies. Buffon has joined the French Ligue Un alongside an armada of stars, such as Neymar, Mbappe and Cavani. The French Ligue Un has dropped its less league toga to challenge the LaLiga and Barclays English Premier League for the titles that separate the boys from the men – UEFA Champions League and the Europa Cup diadems.

Will Neymar, Mbappe and Buffon change the course of history by lifting the UEFA Champions league and make the French league the new Mecca for soccer players next season?  Sixteen clubs have qualified for the next stage. They are Manchester United, Paris Saint Germain, Roma, FC Porto, Ajax, Real Madrid, Tottenham, Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Lyon, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Juventus, FC Schalke 04 and Manchester City.

    Mikel’s last hurrah

Will John Mikel Obi wear the Super Eagles jersey again? Or has Mikel chosen the honourable way out of the team by keeping his coaches at arm’s length whenever Nigeria has an assignment ahead? Is there something troubling Mikel which is making it impossible for him to tell Gernot Rohr that he is through with Nigeria’s matches? Could it be that Mikel wants his injury to heal properly before playing again? Will that game be his last hurrah for the Eagles? Could it be that we have refused to see Mikel’s new initiative of wanting to give back to the system where he grew from – giving back to streets soccer through a soccer academy?

Mikel has seen it all. He has won the Africa Cup of Nations and a bronze medal in the competition. Mikel has played in three World Cup competitions, although he returned to England, injured, shortly before the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa.

Too many questions but those who saw Mikel struggle through the interview after Nigeria exited the Russia 2018 World Cup with the 2-1 loss to Argentina, knew that the most decorated Nigerian player want to quit the game. Mikel’s reluctance in quitting has more to do with him willing to play but his body is refusing to follow his emotions.

Mikel virtually licked his lips in responding to this question of his imminent exit after the Mundial. His story was troubling, especially when he told everyone how he kept the secret of his father being held captive by kidnappers before the Argentine game. Mikel’s voice was barely audible; as he fought back tears, looking at the ceiling.

Mikel still wants to be part of the new team which he described as hugely talented. He wants to be part of the new dawn in the administration of the game, having seen the worst of the system in the past.

Mikel gave Nigeria his best. He may have shunned a few games in the past. He could be forgiven because he had to choose between club and country. Most times the conflicting tasks were such that he played for Chelsea instead of Nigeria, since the club paid his wages.

Coach Rohr has been unable to get Mikel’s word about his future. Perhaps, Rohr needs to get the federation’s boss Amaju Pinnick to intervene, knowing the relationship between both men. With six months to the Africa Cup of Nations, Rohr needs to know if he can plot his plans devoid of Mikel. That way, he can easily find who will best play the captain’s role at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Mikel must not be allowed to exit the Eagles without fanfare. Mikel has won the two important trophies in European club football with Chelsea FC of England. A product of FIFA’s grassroots programmes, starting with the Golden Eaglets for the U-17 cadre, Flying Eagles at the U-20 level, the Olympic Games for U-23 players and the Super Eagles. A serial captain for our national teams because of his leadership qualities, Mikel should be celebrated with pomp and ceremony.

I look forward to Mikel’s valedictory game with President Muhammadu Buhari leading everyone to the National Stadium to give this worthy Nigerian a befitting farewell. It won’t be a bad idea if FIFA and CAF presidents witness the event. Such moving scenes encourage the younger ones to follow the skipper’s path to glory.

Thank you John Mikel Obi. Up Nigeria!

  • ‘How to beat cyber criminals’

With so many cyber threats out there, today’s organisations need a consolidated view to detect, report on and prevent attacks on their networks.

This is because businesses are investing heavily in gathering threat intelligence in an effort to stay ahead of cyber criminals.

A cyber security expert and Manager at Infoblox Africa, Rene Bosman said upfront knowledge about current and potential threats can help people identify security risks to your business so you can make informed decisions and defend against them.

To proactively detect and combat cyber attacks like ransomware or malware, an organisation must actively collect threat intelligence from a variety of sources and rapidly disseminate information about those threats throughout the entire security infrastructure. Threats can come from internal as well as external sources, and can come in the form of malicious IP addresses, host names, domain names and URLs.

However, the usefulness of that threat intelligence is all too often hampered by siloed information, lack of context to make actionable decisions, and an inability to categorise by category. The result is slow, if any, remediation.

Bosman, said: “The majority of businesses have access to different types of threat intelligence that come standard with certain solutions, such as next-generation firewalls, Web proxies, SIEMs, network access control, vulnerability management, advanced threat protection, and endpoint security. However, each of these data feeds need to be regularly updated or there’s no point in having them. If regular updates aren’t carried out, the threat intelligence won’t be accurate or current.”

It’s also possible to miss something that’s happening on the network if the threat intelligence is coming from disparate systems that don’t speak to one another.

Secondly, he continues, businesses often face the challenge of how to prioritise threats by category, ie, is it a firewall threat, an application layer threat or a DNS threat? Finally, there’s the matter of what action to take around the threat.

Bosman says in order to stay on top of cyber threats that are out there, businesses need to deploy a platform that integrates and consolidates multiple threat intelligence data feeds and communicates the relevant information with the right level in the organisation. “Providing a single pane of glass view of current and emerging threats makes it easier for the business to respond to those threats more quickly and in the right way.

“The platform needs to consolidate all the data that customers have access to, both internal and external. The more feeds that are plugged into the platform, the more accurate the data becomes. If you only rely on one feed, you’ll get false positives, which you want to eliminate as much as possible.”

There are several key benefits to implementing a platform to manage threat intelligence. These are collection and managing real-time curated threat intelligence from internal and external sources in a single, open and flexible platform; it enables threat prioritisation with context by providing over 300 distinct threat classifications and over 20 properties leading to faster threat remediation; improves security posture and situational awareness of your organisation by sharing the curated threat intelligence data with the security infrastructure; and prevents malware communications with C&C sites and data exfiltration by providing real-time threat feeds at the DNS control plane.

Failure to take additional measures to help your business manage its threat intelligence could place the business at risk of a Liberty-level data breach, in which 40 terrabytes of data was compromised and held to ransom. “The higher the quality of the data feeds and the ability to share this data with its right function, the easier it is to integrate and consolidate them, the greater the likelihood that your business will be able to take action much sooner, thereby shortening the kill chain as much as possible,” he added.

  • Togolese charged with beating three year-old niece to death

An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday remanded a Togolese trader, Afi Koumebio, who allegedly beat her three-year-old niece to death.

The Magistrate, Mrs Bola Folarin-Williams, remanded in Ikoyi Prisons, 30-year-old Koumebio, who resides on Mosafejo Road, Amukoko, Lagos.

The court could not take the plea of the accused as the magistrate said that she needed advice from the state’s director of public prosecution.

Folarin-Williams adjourned the case until May 10 for mention.

According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Olatunde, the accused beat the minor, hit her head on a wall and killed her on March 26 at 8.00p.m. at her residence.

Olatunde submitted that Koumebio beat the girl because she entered her neighbour’s room.

He noted that murder contravened Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes death sentence for convicted murderers.

Linda, an expectant mother, who also has a two- year- old girl, was said to have used a mopping stick to beat Mbafan to death.

It was learnt that Linda, who hails from Imo State, was upset with the little girl for defecating on her body.

She was said to have been re-arrested in Owerri, Imo State capital, by SCID operatives, after she jumped bail at a police station in Lagos.

The case was adjourned to April 19 for legal advice.

  • Thugs beat up Osun indigenes in LAUTECH

ARMED thugs yesterday allegedly invaded the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), in Ogbomoso, Oyo State and attacked some workers of Osun State origin.

They allegedly told the workers to leave the institution or lose their lives.

The thugs, according to an eye witness stormed the Bursar’s office, beat up the security guard on thir bid to attack the Bursar. But they were stopped by the Department of State Service (DSS) officials and policemen invited by the university.

The policemen escorted the Bursar out of the premises.

Another eyewitness explained that members of the Osun State House of Assembly Committee on Education visited the institution earlier to address their fellow indigenes following an  appeal for protection.

The witness said the lawmakers advised the workers to be calm   assuring them of the Osun government’s protection.

According to him, the lawmakers also advised them to stay away till the two owner-states resolve the crisis.

His words: “Shortly after the lawmakers left, a major leader of the Ogbomoso Parapo, a socio-cultural union of Ogbomoso indigenes, led a gang of hoodlums to the institution. They first beat up a member of staff whom they believed hails from Osun State because of his surname Osunbade, though he actually hails from Oyo State.

“From there, they stormed the Bursar’s office. On getting there, the security guard attached to the office prevented them from gaining entry but he was beaten to near pulp. On seeing what was going on outside, the Bursar, who is from Osun State, quickly locked his door from behind. The hoodlums, went to the window to threaten him that they would burn down his office if he refused to open. But as they were planning on what next to do, the DSSS people came. Then, they fled. The security operatives escorted the bursar out of the premises.”

It was learnt that the bursar and the leaders of the thugs went to make statements at the police station.

The attack caused pandemonium in the institution; workersran heter-skelter to escape from the touts.

But Chairman of the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Dr Biodun Olaniran, described the incident as minor. He said some thugs came to attack some ASUU members, adding that the case was reported to the registrar, who has taken appropriate steps.

The National President of the parapo group, Saka Bello, did not pick his calls nor did he reply the text message seeking  his reaction to the allegation.

But the National Secretary workers of the Ogbomoso Parapo, Michael Abioye, denied that the group sponsored the thugs. He said staff members of Oyo State origin planned a meeting for today, pointing out that news of the planned meeting caused apprehension in the university. He said no thugs invaded the premises.

Abioye said the   change of ownership could not be achieved through violence but by peaceful means

LAUTECH’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Lekan Fadeyi said he could not comment on the incident because he was not around.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Adekunle Ajisebutu, was also not available for comments.

Ogbomoso indigenes have been campaigning for Oyo State to become sole owner of the  university, which is jointly owned with Osun State. The Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi, threw his wight behind the campaign in an advertorial last week.

They claim that Osun has not  been fulfilling its financial obligations to the university.

Some members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, mainly from Ogbomoso, also last week presented a motion seeking the removal of Osun State as a co-owner of the institution.

  • ZAMBIA VS NIGERIA: Ikeme: Eagles ‘ll beat Chipolopolo

ZAMBIA VS NIGERIA: Ikeme: Eagles ‘ll beat Chipolopolo

Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has expressed confidence in the senior national team (Super Eagles) to beat Chipolopolo of Zambia in Ndola to get the maximum three points in the first leg Africa world Cup qualifier billed for Russia in 2018.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper in a telephone chat with NationSport said his team mates in the Super Eagles have resolved to compensate Nigerians with the 2018 World Cup ticket to erase the memory of not qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations back-to-back.

“Playing at the FIFA World Cup finals is the joy of any footballer and some of us will not have the opportunity of playing again if we miss the 2018 edition.

“Speaking further, he said in a meeting in Uyo, before the game against Tanzania the players resolved  to fight for the sole ticket in the group by giving their best anytime we are invited. I can assure you that we will beat Zambia in Ndola,”  Ikeme boasted.

He also stated that not keeping regularly in his club has no effect on him when it comes to national team assignment.

The super Eagles will play Zambia’s Chipolopolo  on October 9th in Ndola.

  • Enyimba beat FC IfeanyiUbah 2-0

    Enyimba beat FC IfeanyiUbah 2-0

A goal by Ikechukwu Ibenegbu in the first half and a second half strike by Daniel Etor were enough for champions Enyimba to beat FC IfeanyiUbah 2-0 in a Nigeria league match on Saturday.

Enyimba are now ninth on the table with 24 points from 14 matches, while IfeanyiUbah slipped in their title chase.

‘Mosquito’ Ibenegbu put Enyimba ahead after 17 minutes, when he smashed home a poor clearance.

But the home team had to wait till the hour mark before they will celebrate another goal.

Etor finished off from close range a lovely team play that involved Mfon Udoh.

  • And the beat goes on

SIR: During the presentation of what he termed ‘budget of change’, President Muhammadu Buhari declared free tertiary education in the field of education, technology and science. Basic education in public schools has been free in Nigeria since independence and the issue has either been quality or access. Many rural areas have no schools while where there are schools, parents are not motivated enough to send their wards to schools due to poverty, lack of awareness or both. Lack of adequate qualified teachers and facilities will be rated as the major reasons behind poor quality education. The N369.6 billion budgeted to Education if not stolen, will address to a large extent the issue of facilities, school feeding will boost enrolment while the 500,000 graduates the President promised to engage will also help in reducing the shortage of qualified teachers in the coming financial year.

My main concern is the extent of the freeness of the ‘free tertiary education’ and its quality. Will it be completely free or partially free?

During my undergraduate studies, the Kano State government inconsistently paid me N15,000 annually as scholarship. The paltry amount could not cover my school fees and hardly could cover more than a month’s living expenses. It was even less for some states (my friends from Kogi State were receiving N5,000!) and most students I know received only that from government for the whole year. I was a little bit luckier, I also enjoyed, based on merit, Federal Scholarship Board’s Award with annual stipends of N150,000. It helped considerably but the truth is it could not pay my school fees and catered for my modest financial needs throughout the year. My parents still had to pay the bills. I can also remember that out of the more than 40,000 students of Ahmadu Bello University at that time, only less than 40 were offered the gesture that year! So insignificant!

Will Buhari’s free education cover only first degree, Master’s or PhD or all? If it is expected to cover only undergraduate studies, then it will have minimal contribution to scientific and technological advancement of Nigeria. But if is going to cover higher degrees, then we can loudly shout that Nigeria is a success in progress.

It is a common knowledge that research funded by students cannot produce sustainable development. High world ranking universities have most of their PhD’s fully funded and one cannot even register for many courses without official sponsorship. Interestingly, large chunk of the funding comes from charities and other establishments.

For impactful research, a postgraduate student should be fully engaged and insulated from basic financial pressures. I know students who sleep or spend most of their time in laboratories and could not possibly combine their research with another job. In United Kingdom, Research council set regulations for funded postgraduate research to include the minimum of £14,057 as annual tax-free stipend in addition to tuition and research expenses. Most universities in USA engage students as research assistants and pay them what will allow for a decent living. Many countries like Germany extend their tuition-free PhD policy to non-citizens.

It is hoped that Nigerian government notes that serious free tertiary education has to include free tuition, research fees (which, in most cases is higher than the tuition) and living expenses. Students doing PhD that are not employed or sponsored by organisations should have a fixed decent salary that will make them concentrate on the research. It should also be ensured that only researches with positive impact and domestic touch are allowed and sponsored. The ‘pull-down-syndrome’ in our universities should be stopped and excesses of undisciplined lecturers and supervisors who make it their duty to delay and retard students be checkmated. Only then our universities will be genuine incubation centres for ideas and researches and papers coming from them will be worthier than akara wrapping sheets.

Tenger boasts: I know how to beat Akwa United

Lobi Stars head coach, Justin Tenger hopes for his second FA Cup trophy when his side meets Akwa United in the Federation Cup final at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos. He won the first FA Cup trophy as a coach when he guided defunct BCC Lion of Gboko to victory in 1997. In this interview with Taofeek Babalola, Tenger said his boys have rediscovered their form and they are in the right frame of mind for the game. Excerpts:

How prepared are your players for Sunday’s game against Akwa United?

The boys are in good shape. One good thing is that the boys picked up very late and it happened to us at a very good time. They rediscover their forms towards the tail end of the season that is why they were able to scale through the Federation Cup final.

What can you attribute to the struggling of Lobi Stars this season?

The truth is that the team struggled throughout the season because the team is full of young players. Most of them came from lower clubs who played at the lower division and the premier league is quite different from what we see in other divisions. The boys are not there yet. Even some of the game we lost we should have won it. We drew almost eight matches at home; if we had won those matches we would have won the league or came second.

You lost 1-0 to Akwa United few days ago in the premier league; do you think they will not do the double against you on Sunday?

The match in Uyo, they know how they won it. Lagos is a different ball game. They are coming and take their defeat to Uyo.  I retired from Akwa United and I know who they are. And I know the players they would parade on Sunday. FA Cup is different from League games and come on Sunday we will know who is the real champion.

What is your expectation for Sunday’s game?

Well, I expect nothing less than lifting the cup and take it to my state. I want to see this as an opportunity for me. If I win it, it means that God crown my career and my old age. Sunday’s game would be my third national trophy as a coach. One from FA cup and one from the league.  I won the first FA cup trophy in 1997 with BCC Lion of Gboko. I won the league with Katsina United in 2000. Now I’m hoping to win my third national trophy on Sunday.

What are the motivations for the team?

Thank you for this question, all along the state government has been very supportive. That is one good area that the team is banking on. The governor came in and he showed lots of enthusiasm, he supported us; in fact, the only way to pay him back is to win the trophy.

    Your message to your fans?

They should expect different Lobi Stars. People of Lagos love beautiful football and they will see good game on Sunday. We will play good football and we will win well on Sunday by God’s grace.

Thank you for talking to us.

    You are welcome.
