Amoo, Erico, others charge Eagles to beat Cameroon

Some football enthusiasts on Friday urged the Super Eagles to be focused on winning subsequent matches in spite of their 0-2 loss to the Leopards of DR Congo.

While speaking in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, they urged the team to put the loss to Congo behind them and prepare for Sunday’s friendly game against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

According to most of them, the team needs to improve in subsequent matches.

They also suggested that Enyeama’s decision to retire from international matches should not have effect on the team’s performance.

NAN reports that the Leopards of DR Congo defeated the Eagles of Nigeria 2-0 in the international friendly played in Belgium on Thursday.

The Eagles would be looking to redeem themselves from the defeat, when they take on the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in another friendly international at Stade Edmond Matchens, Brussels tomorrow.

A former Eagles’ player, Fatai Amoo said he was unhappy at the substandard performance of the team against Congo.

He said he hoped the team’s Chief Coach, Sunday Oliseh, would make necessary adjustments to the team ahead of Sunday’s game.

“I am not happy about the defeat by Congo; Oliseh needs to work on the players and I believe positively they could do better against Cameroon.

“Enyeama’s resignation has nothing to do with the defeat, they would be able to cope.

“Mikel Obi has great responsibilities, he has to show experience in Sunday’s game and train the younger players,’’ Amoo said.

Former Super Falcon’s Chief Coach, Paul Hamilton, told NAN that the team must work hard to see changes and secure victory against the Lions.

“It seems things are not going well at the moment but I will advise them to get back to camp, work hard, be friendly with each other; that is the most important thing for the team right now.’’

Another former Falcons’ coach, Nnena Etim, urged the team to work together and take instructions from their coach, regardless of what could have happened earlier in the team.

“We all saw yesterday’s (Thursday’) game and there is no way to predict what the team will do or play next; all they need to do is play according to their coach’s instruction.

“Enyeama’s decision to leave the team does not mean the National team cannot continue; he has done his best and it is his decision, however ,we must continue to go forward.’’

Coach Joe Erico, a former Eagles’ goalkeeper trainer, urged Oliseh to make credible adjustments to the team.

“It is not a good result but it is part of football; sometimes you win, other times you lose, but I want the coach to make relevant changes before crucial matches,’’ Erico said.

A Eagles’ defender, Bright Omokaro, said he was happy they lost the match against DR Congo, saying the loss could cause the coach to improve in subsequent matches.

“I am in a way happy they did not win because if they did, Oliseh might think he has arrived; I believe it will help Oliseh re-strategise.

“The result shows they need to sit down and work hard, so that a strong team can be built. I believe they will do much better in the game against Cameroon,’’ Omokaro said.

D’Tigress beat Mozambique by 71-66 points

    • To face Cameroon in today’s semi-final

Nigeria’s female national basketball team, D’Tigress advance to the AfroBasket Women 2015 semi-final after beating Mozambique by 71-66 points in the first quarter-finals on Thursday in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The Nigerian ladies will now face Cameroon in the semi final after the host defeated Egypt by 76-54 points in the other quarter final game.

The Scott Nnaji led team had on Tuesday night beat Algeria 79-49 in their fifth and last Group B game to reach the quarter final after starting the tournament with a 57-51 defeat to Angola before going on to win the rest of their group matches, beating Egypt 97-68, Guinea 100-47 and Senegal 75-64.

Yesterday’s game saw Joyce Ekworomadu sparked Nigeria with a game-best 20 points, while Odelia Mafanela and Deolinda Ngulela combined for 34 Mozambique points.

Game hero, Helen Ogunjimi has officially become Nigeria’s secret weapon. She not only played aggressive defense, but  30-year-old guard provide two crucial three-pointers keeping Nigeria very much alive in the contest.

Two years ago, Mozambique upset Nigeria in the quarter finals, and on Thursday they were very close to repeat their fortunes, but Nigeria stepped on floor a desperation mode, reaching the tournament’s semi final for the second time since 2011.

Ndidi Madu, who clear the boards with a game-high 13 rebounds later told FIBA.com: “It was a tough game for us. Mozambique is a great team. We didn’t do a good of job rebounding. We definitely need to able to rebound in order to win ball games. It does not matter who we face tomorrow, we just need to be ready for the fight.”

  • AAG: Nigeria beat defending champions Ghana 2-0

AAG: Nigeria beat defending champions Ghana 2-0

Nigeria defeated arch-rivals and All Africa Games champions Ghana 2-0 to book their place in the semi-finals of the football event of this year’s AAG.

Nigeria’s final Group B match against Senegal, who drew 0-0 with Ghana on the opening day, will determine the overall winners of the group following the last-minute withdrawal of Egypt.

Junior Ajayi opened scoring for the superior Nigerians in the 55th minute and Kingsley Sokari made the game safe three minutes from time.

Nigeria’s Dream Team VI dominated and were deserved winners.

Nigeria were on the front foot in the first half with Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori his team’s most outstanding player as a result.

A minute to half time, Oghenekaro Etebo was denied from point-blank range by Ofori when from Etor’s corner, the ball fell kindly to him a second time.

However, Nigeria finally made their dominance count 10 minutes after resumption when the dangerous Etor Daniel delivered a whipped-in ball from the right for Junior Ajayi to coolly slot home.

The second goal of the game was even more sublime – Kingsley Sokari combined with skipper Azubuike Ikechukwu on the edge of the Ghana box and Sokari continued his run before he lifedt the ball over the rushing Ofori for a superb finish.

Before this goal, Ghana were almost gifted a goal that would have brought them on level pegging when in the 69th minute Segun Oduduwa’s back pass exposed the Nigeria defence, but the Black Meteors could not cash in on such an opening.

Dream Team IV beat Abuja College 3-0

Nigeria’s Dream Team defeated Abuja Football College 3-0 on Friday in a test game ahead of next month’s All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.

Oghenekaro Etebo put the Nigeria U23s ahead from the penalty spot in the first half.

Junior Ajayi doubled the Dream Team’s advantage in the second half with Christian Pyagbara completing the scoring late on.

Flying Eagles Mustapha Abdullahi featured for the Nigeria Olympic team and now looks set to join the team for the trip to Congo.

The leftback will fill in for Chima Akas who is with the Super Eagles squad preparing for an AFCON qualifier in Tanzania.

The Dream Team are due to fly out of the country on Monday.

They are drawn in Group B alongside defending champions Ghana and Senegal. Egypt have pulled out of the competition.

  • And the beat goes on

It’s exciting being with soccer fans during matches, with their rib crackers targeted at outstanding players and the fumbling ones. After the game between Chelsea and Swansea, a colleague sent us all reeling when he said John Mikel Obi’s bench role had assumed a new dimension – “Look, wetin una dey talk? Which kind bench warmer be Mikel sef, since how many years now? Mikel bench role don get seat belt; abi una no get eyes to see say dem don strap Mikel for the bench? Abeg no tell me say Mikel wan make im contract end jare! Na so he go siddon look so tay this season go end.”

Indeed, the seriousness with which this colleague lamented Mikel’s serial presence on the bench sparked the debate on his stay at Stamford Bridge instead of joining Al Ain, like his Super Eagles mate, Emmanuel Emenike.

Another colleague took on this Mikel critic, insisting that the Nigerian international shunned Inter Milan to remain at Chelsea. Not one to run away from challenges, the Mikel critic fired back, referring to the internet to buttress his facts. If you think that was the end of the debate, Mikel’s apostle also went to the internet to show the story where indeed the Chelsea star was mentioned in an Inter Milan transfer rumour. Yes, this will be the trend anytime matches are played until the end of May 2016.

My take on this Mikel-at-Chelsea saga is that we should respect the player’s decision. His plans are close to his chest. He will quit at the appropriate time. Not playing regularly for Chelsea is a function of the type of tactics Jose Mourinho has for each game. Besides, Chelsea has over 50 matches to play this season – if they play to their strength. It is only fair to expect Mikel to play enough of these matches, injury permitting. I would rather have Mikel play for Chelsea than to be a regular in smaller European teams.

Mikel will learn more on the intricacies of the game under Mourinho’s tutelage than with any Lilliputian manager. Mikel’s game has improved since he joined Chelsea. The only difference is that he ceased to be an offensive player. Mikel has played for every Chelsea manager since he joined The Blues. And this says a lot about the quality of his talent. Who says Mikel cannot retire from the game after his contract at Chelsea next year? Must Mikel play the game forever?

I thought I had seen the last of such post-match debates until I was confronted by a fan of Arsenal who screamed: “Oga, una wey dey talk for television, make una tell Mourinho make e come return our money wey we pay for Cech o! Cech kill us against West Ham. I never see that kind thing. Wo, I never enter my house since Sunday. I dey run from my friends. Dem go kill me.”

I was awed because this raving Gunner was really pained by his team’s home loss to West Ham. Sadly his message amounts to shouting in the desert because I couldn’t help him. Of course, his rants wouldn’t get to Arsenal’s management in London. But I can bet that that angry man would be the first person to watch Arsenal’s away game against Crystal Palace.

Fans must understand that every game has its own strategy. Gunners have lost their opening ties before. What counts at the end of the 38-match league is where each team finishes on the log. For Arsenal, they have been consistent in grabbing the UEFA Champions League ticket. Gunners have their own stadium and rank among the richest clubs in Europe. Losing an opening game shouldn’t be a problem for their aspirations. Arsene Wenger knows his onions.

I wasn’t shocked that Victor Moses didn’t play for Chelsea against Swansea. He was elbowed in a mid-week friendly at Stamford Bridge against Fiorentina FC of Italy. He could have been benched for this Sunday’s cracker against Manchester City at the Ethihad Stadium. I also won’t be surprised if at some stage in the all-ticket game against Manchester City if Mikel is introduced – that is if he doesn’t start with Moses.

Looking at the reviewed matches since last week, I felt happy about the exploits of Odion Ighalo at Watford. I wasn’t shocked by the uncanny way in which Ighalo waltzed his way past two Everton defenders before delivering a pile driver, which went into the net. Of significant importance is the cheeky way Ighalo dribbled John Stones, the defender that is causing transfer palavar between Everton and Chelsea to score for Watford. I admire Ighalo’s confidence on and off the ball. He showed that he is a technical player with the way he changed his team’s tempo of play when he was introduced in the second half.

Osaze Odemwingie returned to Stoke’s squad as a closing stages substitute. He did quite well, trying to create openings for his side through his decoy runs, but it appeared Liverpool players were ready for Stoke, having lost this fixture last year 6-1. Though rusty, Osaze exhibited traces of brilliance, which could count in his favour in subsequent matches. Sadly, Osaze is out of this weekend’s match for Stoke, according to coach Mark Hughes on Thursday evening.

“Unfortunately Peter has got a hamstring strain and is likely to miss the next couple of weeks. It’s disappointing for him because he has worked tremendously hard throughout pre-season,” Hughes said at the pre-match press conference.

I was excited when Jordaan Ibe revealed that he would decide his international soccer future with Nigeria in 2016. It could be Nigeria or England. I pray he plays for Nigeria, irrespective of the abundance of talents at the grassroots. Eagles need players who can distinguish themselves, not those to be taught the rudiments of the game.

At 21, Ibe is better prepared than any true 21-year-old at the grassroots. The ones from the grassroots are raw and may not have been drilled in the rudiments of the game. He may also not have played in any stadium. At best, such a lad from the grassroots is used to playing on school grounds with bamboo goalposts or at public fields where fans invade the pitch with every goal scored.

The true 21-year-old in Nigeria wouldn’t have played before 20,000 spectators, let alone 60,000. But Ibe, having been through the mill in England, isn’t frightened by the crowd. Ibe won’t be struggling to use good soccer boots, unlike the grassroots chap.

We have had brilliant young boys play for our age-grade teams. Yet, many have asked where these boys are especially when their contemporaries at the age-grade levels of other countries blossom. I plead with Oliseh to get back to Ibe for his decision, even if it means convincing him to opt for Nigeria. Ibe’s lifespan in the game barring injuries would be longer than any grassroots player in Nigeria.

It’s great to report that Taiwo Awoniyi will soon be a Liverpool player. He has joined his Golden Eaglets mate Iheanacho in the quest to shake the Barclays English Premier League in the next two years. Awoniyi, we are again told, will be loaned to Dutch club SC Heerenveen. Report on Friday suggested that the Dutch club denied this arrangement. That is how most celebrated transfers start. Awoniyi will use the Dutch club’s matches to polish his skills ahead of making the biggest impact by any Nigerian player, since Nwankwo Kanu rocked the English game. With Awoniyi and Iheanacho in Europe, my dream of the Super Eagles being the Cinderella of the Russia 2018 World Cup is looking real.

I wasn’t shocked on Monday night seeing Kelechi Iheanacho sitting on the bench. For me, it was a great improvement from the past where he watched Manchester City’s matches from the stands. Those picked ahead of Iheanacho are clearly better strikers, with rich pedigree of scoring goals at the top level. With time, Iheanacho will mature into a great player at Manchester City. Argentine star Aguero is an injury-prone player and I expect Iheanacho to take his chance any day he plays in Aguero’s place.

It is not all sweet tales for Nigerian players in England, with the shocking news that two former Eagles players Brown Ideye and Victor Anichebe could be sacked by West Brom. It is rather ironic for Ideye because at this time last year, he joined West Brom as the club’s biggest buy. What could have gone wrong with Ideye’s game in 12 months? That is the way the cookies crumble. Anichebe joined West Brom from Everton but he has been troubled by injuries. We only hope that manager Pulis gives the Nigerians another chance.

“People will look at Victor and Browny and think they have to move on, but they have wanted to play more regular football anyway. Does bringing Salomon in hasten their move from the club? We’ll have to wait and see,” Pulis told the Express & Star.

The Scottish Premier League is on. Indeed, two Nigerians, Ambrose Efe and Juwon Oshaniwa, have made their marks playing for Celtics and Hearts. This season looks like one in which Nigerians will shine in Europe. We only hope that their performances should be enough to get them on the shortlist for the 2015 African Footballer of the Year award.

It is been a long while Nigerians got the award. Let us pray!

We knew we’d beat Pillars, Rangers interim Boss brags

Coach of Enugu Rangers Imama Amapakabo has revealed that he wasn’t surprised about his side’s win against reigning league champions Kano Pillars in Enugu on Wednesday.

Pillars scored first but quickly relinquished their lead conceding 2 goals in an exciting first half as the score board read 2-1 through out the week 15 league match at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium.

Speaking with www.footballlive.ng after the game, Amapakabo said that he knew his team was good enough for a win against Kano Pillars with the way they set up to play against the Nigerian league champions.

”I knew we were going to win, they scored a goal out of nothing. We saw a lot from the bench and made the right calls, I knew they were not a threat because I was certain of a win.”

Super Eagles’ Chief Coach Stephen Keshi, like he told reporters when he came to face the Disciplinary Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is leaving no stone unturned to ensure Nigeria qualifies for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

SportingLife scooped from a competent source at the Federation that Keshi has submitted his programme for the next AFCON qualifying match against Tanzania in September.

The source disclosed that what was paramount with the Coach was how to qualify for the continental tournament and thereby redeem his image and the country’s image too since the country failed to do so this year in Equatorial Guinea.

“Keshi has put behind him the allegation of applying for the Cote d’Ivoire coaching job and he is determined to qualify the Super Eagles for the AFCON by submitting his programme for the game against Tanzania in September to NFF”, the source disclosed yesterday.

The source also revealed that the programme the former coach of Togo and Mali submitted was titled ‘How to beat Tanzania’ which was submitted to the Secretariat of the NFF last week.

According to the programme, the camp is expected to open on Saturday, August 15, 2015 with the home-based Super Eagles players kick-starting the camping exercise in Abuja, before the foreign-based join a few days to the team’s departure to Tanzania.

The impeccable source also revealed further that Keshi also submitted the technical report of the Super Eagles versus Chad match, which kick-started the qualifying series of the AFCON which the Eagles won 2-0 in Kaduna recently.

The Technical Committee of the NFF will later meet to make input and suggestions to the programmes submitted by Keshi before it would be finally ratified by the Executive Board of the NFF. The technical committee of the NFF will also deliberate on the Eagles versus Chad’s technical report.

Akwa United got morale boosting win in the Glo Premier League Week 10 matches decided in Uyo against 3SC yesterday.

The Promise Keepers had to come back from a goal down before two second half goals fetched them the maximum points that lifted them to 11 points from 10 matches on the log.

The Oluyole Warriors stunned the fans at the Uyo Township Stadium when Nojeem Olukokun scored the opener for the visitors in the 24th minute but two goals by Aniekpeno Udoh and Namso Edo in the 59th and 73rd minutes were enough to overturn the Ibadan side’s first half lead.

  • Rangers urged to beat Kaduna United

Rangers urged to beat Kaduna United

Enugu Rangers’ General Manager, Paul Chibuzor Ozor has charged the players of the Flying Antelopes to go all out for an away win against Kaduna United in the premier league Week 38 tie billed for the Ahmadu

    Bello Stadium on Sunday.

The Enugu side are 10th on the log with 55 points from 37 games and they are to square up against the Crocodile Boys who have already been relegated to the lower league with 38 points from as many matches.

They are 18th on the log.

Rangers struggled at the beginning of the season and only started picking up at the latter part of the second stanza but Ozor in an interview with SportingLife disclosed that the players have been charged to forget about the turbulent season but should concentrate on winning the game against Kaduna United on Sunday.

He promised to surprise the players and the technical crew if they are to secure an away win in Kaduna which he hinted would ensure that the club finishes the season better than last season.

He pointed out some of the reasons for the Flying Antelopes inability to achieve their target but warned that the club’s strong end to the season would mean Rangers would be among the frontrunners next season.

“We have urged the players to go to Kaduna and ensure that they get maximum points and then come back to get the surprise from us. We are happy that our club has stayed very competitive towards the end of the season and that we are  not like some clubs that are always desperate to win cheap points not minding what it would take.

  • APC: Buhari is the man to beat

SIR: With the endorsement of the president Goodluck Jonathan by the People Democratic Party (PDP) for the next year presidential election, Nigerians are eagerly awaiting the opposition All Progressives Congress to choose its presidential standard bearer, who will slug it out with the president under the emerging two-party structures.

To say that the PDP has done its best to move the nation forward is to say the obvious. However, its best is not enough to harness the potential of this greatly endowed nation for the good of the citizenry. The party has been in government since 1999 till date, yet, the reality of our development is just like taking one step forward and two backward. Insecurity, corruption, unemployment, poverty in the midst of plenty, epileptic power supply, poor roads and prostrate economy are the lots of our nation. Although voodoo economists are telling us contrary story about the reality of our development, however, some of us know that they are just pooling wool over our eyes to cover their inefficiency.

If there is any auspicious time for the opposition to wrestle power from the PDP, the time is now. However, APC has a great task at hand if she is to accomplish this task. Enemies of progress of this nation are already waiting for the time when the party will conduct its national congress to choose its presidential standard bearer, what they believe will lead to the implosion of the party. True to the permutation of the detractors, the number of those jostling for the presidential ticket of the party is rising by the day and this is giving the lovers of the party a concern about how the party will come out of the congress unscratched.

To be candid, there is nothing bad in aspiring for the highest office in the land. However, if APC really meant to wrestle power from the PDP, stalwarts should be honest with one another and must be prepared to sacrifice. The situation at hand does not call for experimentation. Nigerian presidency is not just for anybody. It is a complex position which needs complex and tested people, not parvenu, who are just out to give the leadership of the party a jungle to clear. The sacrifice made by the leaders of various legacy parties that merged together to form the APC was highly acknowledged by Nigerians because they saw it as the signal that the liberation of the nation was nigh.

In view of the enormity of the task ahead, if the party is to achieve its aim of winning the power at the federal level in the next election. I am appealing to the leadership of the party to rally round the former head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to fly the party’s flag in the next year presidential election.

My reasons for arriving at this position are simple. Firstly, Buhari is a household name in Nigeria, and has his followership cutting across geopolitical zones. Secondly, he is a tested hand and his qualities as disciplined, upright, incorruptible individual with tenacity of purpose are all added advantages.  Thirdly, the fact that he had about 12million votes against 22million votes of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last presidential election shows that with support from the leadership of the party from other zones, he could easily make up the lost votes and emerge the winner. This cannot be said of any other aspirant.
