Ben Bruce: We will buy globalcinema chain to project Nollywood

Former Nigerian Senator, Ben Murray Bruce has promised to buy a global cinema chain to project the image of the Nigerian film industry across the world.

Bruce made this known at an industry event on Thursday, November 14, 2025, in Lagos.

He said, “We are going to partner with many Nigerian film practitioners and we will purchase a global cinema chain so we can showcase our movies in at least 1000 theatres. Nobody is going to give it to us, I know where to get the money, don’t worry about that but we have to own a cinema chain that will dominate the world and show our films.”

The Silverbird group founder also narrated his involvement in the film industry tracing it back to his years in high school, where he attended the same school with LeVar Burton, the star of ‘Roots,’ Kunta Kinte, and how the late filmmaker and founder of Africa Movie Academy Awards, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe pressured him into making an impact in the film industry.

He said, “I should have begun my career in film and not music but I can’t explain it. LeVar Burton, who played the role of Kunta Kunte, was my classmate. I have been in this space for a long time but yet to make a film, I will make one but we have to make it right, we have to do it right. The late Peace Anyiam-Osigwe would always meet with me and query why I was not actively involved with the film industry. Peace would say, Uncle Ben, why did you abandon the film industry? You created something and abandoned it, why? You cannot abandon the industry.”

The 68-year-old showbiz impresario has been in the entertainment industry for over four decades and promises to impact the Nigerian film industry and take it global through a world cinema chain.

  • Ben Bruce withdraws from senatorial race

Senator Ben Murray Bruce has withdrawn his ambition to return to the Senate for a second term in 2019.

The Senator abandoned his ambition to represent the Bayelsa East Senatorial District following widespread rejection of his candidature by the stakeholders of the district.

In a letter written on the eve of the senatorial primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bruce thanked his district for giving him the opportunity to serve.

The letter said: “I thank God and the good people of Brass, Bayelsa East Senatorial District who offered me the golden opportunity four years ago to represent them and the state in the Senate, Nigeria’s highest lawmaking chamber.

“It is without doubt that I have tried to discharge my duties as a legislator and representative of my people creditably to the best of my ability so far.

“My voice has been very loud on the issues that matter to our people and our country at all time.

“My support to our party, my people and state government is unquestionable. I am humbled that the national leadership of my party supported by the State chapter in appreciation of my efforts offered to support my reelection to the senate to continue my service.

“I have also intensified consultations in the last couple of week in the course of which I have come to realise an existing local rotational arrangement of over 20 years beginning with the late Great Chief Melford Okilo, by which arrangement the Senatorial seat rotates per local government area among the three councils for four years in the Senatorial District.

“Even with the support of my party at the national and state levels with the full backing of my state government and leadership, as a man of honour interested in the well being of my people, I hereby announce my withdrawal from the Senatorial race.

“I do not want whatever reason to appear to have used my privileged position and influence to do anything that other than the well-being and the stability and the good of the people.

“I am in all of these for the people, not for my self.”

  • Ojude-Oba: Saraki preaches unity of Nigerians

…As Ijebu people mark Ojude Oba carnival in splendour

Amid a cloudy sky above and a wave of excitements on ground,  Ijebu – Ode, the Ogun State royal town of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, turned aglow with celebrations for the better part of Thursday as the Ijebu sons and daughters celebrated their Ojude Oba annual cultural carnival in glamour and splendour.

Over 35 age grades – Regberegbes – all dressed in colourful and distinguishing attires to showcase their rich cultural heritage, took turn to pay homage to Oba Adetona after series of rhythmic dance steps round the oval shaped arena of the festival arcade.

The regberegbes were closely followed in this rite by the dozens of horse riders (Eleshins) and descendants of the town’s baloguns (Ijebu warlords) by noon during which the carnival peaked with an estimated15, 000 people participating even as Dane guns boomed intermittently.

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, who was the Special guest of honour for this year Ojude Oba and whose arrival was greeted with applause, hailed Ojude Oba as a cultural festival that “fosters unity” among the Ijebus.

Saraki, whose  entourage include Senators – Dino Melaye (Kogi State), Ben Bruce (Bayelsa State), Abiodun Olujimi (Ekiti State), Duro Faseyi (Ekiti State), Buruji Kashamu(Ogun State), Shaba Lafiaji(Kwara State), Sam Anyanwu(Imo State), Saraki’s  media aide, Alh. Olaniyonu Yusuph and more, urged  Nigerians to emulate the Ijebu people, who despite their diversity of faiths,  live and interact harmoniously with one another.

The Senate president described the over 100 years old festival as a “noble culture” that has continued to serve as a veritable rallying point for all sons and daughters of Ijebu nation.

He said whenever the issue of “resilience and dynamism of culture” is being discussed, Ojude – Oba readily comes to mind, adding that the festival has continued to grow from strength to strength because of the leadership quality of the Awujale of Ijebu land, Oba Adetona.

He noted that it has also become obvious that only quality leadership could engender progress and development such as the type witnessed in Ijebuland.

He lauded the Awujale whose unifying force, he said, is an  attestation to his good leadership, not only in Ijebu and Ogun state but also in the entire country.

He described the equestrian touch of the horse riding by the family of horse riders and descendants of the baloguns which was a noticeable feature of the  Ojude Oba carnival as one that depicts the festival’s nobleness.

According to him, Nigeria should draw strength from her diversity like the Ijebu people and not use her  diversity to create barrier or wedge to national unity and progress.

He urged Nigerians, particularly leaders, to create programmes that would engenders unity and peaceful co – existence of people.

“Ojude Oba fosters unity among all Ijebu people, and this is another way in which we as a nation could take a leaf from this festival. Unity is paramount; unity is key. When we are united, we achieve more. When we are united, we record monumental progress.

“I urge us all, therefore, to pursue more activities that will unite our various peoples. Our diversity is our strength. We must, therefore, continue to initiate programmes that will bring us together and further highlight the fact that we are one and the same.

“In over a century of Ojude Oba, Ijebu citizens have shown us that unity will always lead to progress, and that there is strength in unity. This is a shining example for us all.

“When we talk about the resilience and dynamism of culture, Ojude Oba is a case in point. It is always wonderful to see this proud display of culture that you have consistently showcased for over a hundred years.

I expect that memories of today will linger on in the minds of all who are here, or see the images. The visual feast of the Regberegbes (Age Grades) is already well known and iconic, as they present themselves before Kabiyesi in colourful uniform attires made with creativity and flair, and pray for his continued health and long life.

Also famous is the equestrian parade by the Baloguns of the Ruling Houses, memorable for its display of a noble tradition. I must admit that this part of the festival holds a special appeal for me, due to its similarity to the Durbar in my part of the country, the latest of which we held in Ilorin just on Thursday.

In the array of sartorial tradition of this festival, as evident in the impressive attires worn by the various groups, Ojude Oba promotes and reinforces the culture of the people.

“Indeed, there is much assurance in the knowledge that these activities are in a continuum with the past; they show that we can always draw the best from that glorious past to shore us up for the challenges

“While Ojude Oba provides a platform for the Ijebus to meet, interact and showcase their cultural heritage, we also know that the significance of the festival goes much deeper. Typically held on the third day after Eid el Kabir, this is a festival that unites the faiths.

“Despite its origins in Islam, the festival does not exclude any religious groups. I would like to say, with some emphasis, that our dear country, Nigeria, would do well to draw important lessons from an event such as this.

“We are one. Religion should not constitute a wedge or barrier between us. This is what illustrious Ijebu people demonstrate to us yearly with this festival. Muslims, Christians and others can be found among us here today, and I understand that this is how it has been since the very beginning.

“This is salutary, and worthy of commendation to Nigeria and the world.  In addition, Ojude Oba affirms that Nigeria’s cultures are veritable sources of revenue, if well packaged. With the return of thousandsof people to their ancestral homes for this festival, and thousands more attending as visitors, the local economy will, without a doubt, get a boost.

“This is tourism in action. Essentially, domestic tourism is being promoted here, and this is how it should be all over the country. It is therefore necessary for more parts of Nigeria to follow this worthy example, in order to showcase the beauty of our culture to the larger world,” Saraki said.

In attendance at this year Ojude Oba include the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Yetunde Onanuga, former governor Gbenga Daniel, Senator Gbenga Kaka, Oloori Omooba Subomi Balogun, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, Dr. Doyin Okupe, Speaker Suraju Adekunbi among others.

  • Ballots brought me into office not bullets – Ben Bruce

The Senator representing Bayelsa East in the National Assembly, Ben Murray-Bruce, has said that ballot brought him into office and not bullet.

An unusual security blanket was thrown around the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday by men of the Department of State Security (DSS).

The National Assembly staff, legislative aides and journalists who arrived the complex, met stern-faced operatives of the DSS who disallowed entry into the premises.

Reacting to this, Ben Bruce through his Titter page wrote:

“I am here at the National Assembly. I will not run away. If they like they can shoot me. Bullets did not bring me into office. Ballots brought me into office. I am here. Let them do their worst!”

  • Obasanjo not Jonathan initiated Kaduna rail project, el-Rufai replies Ben Bruce

Obasanjo not Jonathan initiated Kaduna rail project, el-Rufai replies Ben Bruce

Governor Nasir el-Rufai of  Kaduna State said yesterday that  Senator Ben Murray Bruce (Bayelsa East) was wrong to claim that the Kaduna rail system was initiated by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

President Muhammadu Buhari and El-Rufai had jointly taken a train ride in Kaduna on Thursday, with Bruce teasing the  President to thank ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for the ride.

The train took Buhari and El-Rufai from Rigasa to Kakuri on the outskirts of Kaduna  to enable the president  inaugurate the country’s first Inland Dry Port.

Bruce, writing on his Twitter handle yesterday,  said the rail system was “entirely” Jonathan’s achievement.

“I hope President @MBuhari remembers to say thank you to former President @GEJonathan for the train ride he enjoyed in Kaduna. Some of us haven’t forgotten that that achievement was entirely the handiwork of the Jonathan government. Nigeria should give honour to whom honour is due

    — Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) January 4, 2018″

The governor’s response, also on Twitter, was swift in coming.

He said: “Wrong distinguished senator! The Obasanjo administration, which Jonathan was not part of, designed, raised the financing and started the EPC of the Lagos-Kano dual track-standard gauge rail system  and the Abuja Light Rail,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Yar’Adua-Jonathan stalled both projects for two years!”

  • Constituents threaten to recall Ben Bruce for non performance

Constituents threaten to recall Ben Bruce for non performance

Constituents, mainly students, from the Bayelsa East Senatorial District, have threatened to recall the Senator representing them in the National Assembly, Mr. Ben Bruce.

The aggrieved constituents accused the “common sense” senator of neglecting them and having no plans for his constituency, which comprises Nembe, Brass and Ogbia local government areas, Bayelsa State.

Leaders of student bodies for the three local governments made their grievances known yesterday in a statement.

The statement was signed by Samuel Tari (Nembe), Ambrose Joseph (Brass) and Mark John (Ogbia).

They lamented that the senator was not in good relationship with his people and had continued to shy away from his constitutional responsibilities.

They cried out that the senator was donating relief materials to people in other states when his constituents were wallowing in poverty with many students unable to pay their fees.

Besides, they said since he was elected, Bruce had not visited his people.

They said: “Since Bruce became a senator, he has failed to look into the basic needs and challenges currently bedeviling the East Senatorial District, such as education, as most of our students cannot access good quality education.

“He has failed to attract a single project to the district in terms of infrastructures, roads and others. He has continuously and deliberately ignored efforts by the people to create a working relationship that will bring out purposeful leadership for our people.

“He is yet to fulfil any of his campaign promises; painfully, he is an Abuja-based senator. He refuses to visit his constituency, except only once when he visited his hometown and couldn’t even stay for up to four hours.

“Sincerely, we are tired, other places are enjoying the benefits that come from having a national representative. Our case has been a curse rather than a blessing. We are just like a district without a senator. This is why we are intended to change that narrative”.

The student leaders gave the senator a 10-day ultimatum, to amend his ways or face consistent protest and the recall process.

They asked the senator to organise a town hall meeting with his constituents and take out time to tour his constituency.

“We are, hereby, giving him an ultimatum of 10 days, starting from 21st August. If he fails to meet with us, we shall take our protest to the National Assembly.

“We will mobilise all the students, our mothers and our fathers. We will initiate his recall process. Our people deserve a better treatment from him. We request to have a town hall meeting.”

  • Senate tasks IGP on upsurge in rape cases, sexual violence

Senate tasks IGP on upsurge in rape cases, sexual violence

Obviously worried by the upsurge in cases of rape and other sexual perversions in the land, the Senate has charged the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to speed up investigation and prosecution of such cases.

The lawmakers urged the police authorities to ensure diligent prosecution of all cases of sexual abuse, violation and violence in line with the provisions of extant laws.

The Senate also mandated it’s Committees on Health, Women Affairs and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to engage relevant stakeholders with a view to resolving pending cases of sexual violation across the country.

In view of the trauma experienced by the victims, the senators further urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and paramilitary agencies to establish functional help desk to provide assistance and support to victims.

The legislators also urged the courts to revisit the penalties prescribed for such offences, including domestic violence, with the view to giving offenders the appropriate and deserving punishment.

The resolution followed a motion by the Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah on the urgent need to address the alarming rate of rape and assault cases against women, children and other vulnerable persons in the country.

Na’Allah bemoaned the frightening increase in cases of sexual violence in the country, particularly rape, regretting that many of the victims were usually children below the age of consent.

He also noted that perpetrators of sexual crimes were mostly familiar neighbours, employers of labour and close family members known to the victims.

The senator further pointed out that sex offenders constituted serious security threat to the larger segment of the society, saying that most of the cases are not getting media attention.

He expressed concerned that the menace has continued to spread to every part of the country, recording male and female victims.

According to him, poor prosecution and light convictions by the concerned authorities have worsened the situation, thereby portraying the country in very bad light.

Senators Ali Wakili, Eyinnaya Abaribe, Ben Bruce and Biodun Olujimi who also contributed to the debate deplored the rise in sex related cases and called for stiffer penalties for offenders.

  • Ben Bruce seeks sanction for concession pact violators

ViolatOrs of airport concession agreements must be punished, the Senate Committee on Privatisation Chairman, Ben Murray-Bruce, has said.

In an interview with The Nation, he said without prosecuting them, some people would wilfully derail the infrastructure development of the sector.

He said the Senate would ensure that those found guilty of misleading the government into entering into controversial airport concession agreements were brought to book.

Bruce said the mishandling of some concession agreements, including the deal signed between the Federal Government and Bi- Courtney Limited over the Murtala Muhammed Terminal Two, Lagos, had created more problems in the sector.

He said the Senate would invoke the relevant laws to ensure that concession agreements with the private sector are honoured, so as not to serve as a disincentive to  investors who are willing to provide money to fix airport infrastructure.

Bruce said: “The whole idea of airport concession is fantastic, but why should the government go into an agreement and not honour it.

“Why go into an agreement with smart lawyers and you go ahead not to honour it.

“All those that were involved in signing the agreement on the government side must be tried.”

He further said:  ”The Senate will not allow the Ministry of Aviation continue with any further airport concession until the MMA 2 issue is fixed. The government must learn to honour agreements. This is not about finding faults, but ensuring that facilities for the private sector has put their money is properly utilised.”

He said the government had no business in running airports, such that the money to be voted into aviation could be used to fix other social infrastructure.

He said: ‘’There will be a crisis if you entered a bad agreement and you are not ready to honour it. That will be be a huge disincentive for other investors.

“Agreed that the agreement on MMA2 was fraught with irregularity, the lawyers that signed and negotiated such bad agreement should be prosecuted for signing a bad deal on behalf of 180 million Nigerians.”
