Taking to his Twitter handle, @benmurraybruce, the Senator, on Thursday, voiced his opinion that it was wrong of states to spend lavishly on palatial government houses than on peoples’ welfare.

“States don’t need palatial Govt Houses,” he tweeted. Bruce also compared this trend to what obtained in London, the capital of the United Kingdom. “It’s a waste of money that should be spent on peoples’ welfare. Consider how modest 10 Downing St is.”

In an earlier tweet, he advised states “to define their priorities. Should a state spend billions maintaining government house when it can’t pay workers? What do you think?”

Bruce, the chairman of Silverbird Group, owners of Silverbird Television, Rhythm radio station and Silverbird Cinemas had embarked on a campaign, on reducing expenditure on running the government.

CHAIRMAN of Silverbird Group and Senator-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ben Murray-Bruce has proffered that a federal police system is unworkable for a country like Nigeria.

He made this pronouncement in a series of tweets on Thursday.

“A single federal police can’t solve local security issues,’ Murray-Bruce who owns Silverbird TV, Rhythm radio station and Silverbird Cinemas said. “We need state and community police who know the peculiar issues of their locality.”

Bruce noted that it is deceitful to say governors were the chief security officers of their states when the police command is controlled from Abuja.

“If we don’t let states establish their own state and community police, then we must hold the president responsible for insecurity in a state,” Bruce stated in another tweet, absolving state governors of security issues in their states.

Bruce, who will be representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District in the coming administration, is a major force in the entertainment sector. He has however been tweeting on perceived solutions to some of Nigeria’s political and socio-economic issues in recent

Hollywood based Nigerian filmmaker, Pascal Atuma, has congratulated Nigeria’s president-elect, General Buhari and Mr. Ben Murray Bruce on their victory at the poll.

About a week ago, Atuma had stated his preference for Nigeria’s next leader, saying: “If I have to choose between former President Buhari and President Jonathan Goodluck, and they are the only options available as it stands, I will vote for Buhari.”

He said: “At this moment in time, Buhari is the best option for Nigeria and I am happy that the good and wonderful citizens of Nigeria did the right thing, they have spoken and their voice did the job. I am happy that Buhari will be leading us for the next four years and I believe he will do a fantastic job.”

Speaking further, Atuma said, “I also want to remind the new President to take care of Nollywood , support Nollywood at all cost and levels and remember that Nollywood flies the flag of Nigeria positively across the globe and that we all supported him from day one because we knew he was the best for us and is the best for us. Together we will move Nigeria forward in a positive direction.”

The Hollywood filmmaker also congratulated Mr. Ben Murray Bruce, Chairman of Silverbird Group, on winning a Senate seat. He went on to say:

“I know Mr Ben very well and what he stands for, so with people like him now in the seat of power and involved in decision making, the future of Nigeria is bright, brighter than it has ever been, it is a beautiful season for Nigeria, season of great hope, I am happy and excited and looking forward to the new Nigeria, full of hope and development.

  • Ben Bruce promises virile representation

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the seat of Brass East senatorial district at the coming 2015 general elections, Mr Ben Murray-Bruce, has boasted that he already has ten bills which he intends to sponsor at the next National Assembly.

While promising to sponsor bills to tackle poverty in the country, he is also promising to deliver on people related issues like poverty, sickness, disease and backwardness afflicting his district.

According Murray-Bruce, “the degradation of the environment has brought enormous hardship to generations yet to be born if the intractable problems in the area are not tackled headlong now”.

Speaking on illegal refineries, which he considers to be the bane of the Niger Delta region and responsible for environmental degradation, pollution and crude oil waste, he said, “converting illegal refineries to legal corporate outfits and getting the owners to pay a corporate tax based on revenue will help curb oil theft and the proliferation of such refineries”.

Murray-Bruce further said, “I will introduce a Marshall Plan bill for the North East to fast track its economy to a modern development oriented region or zone, to keep pace with the other more economically developing states.’’

It will develop the industrial network, poor educational institutions, rid the North-East of disease through the establishment of world class hospitals; and establish a huge industrial village, and a growing business district and skill development for the teeming youths”.

As the leaders of tomorrow, students are not left out. Murray-Bruce recognises empowerment through education; the key to the state realising its full potential, and regarding this, he said, “I will ensure that Bayelsans get free and compulsory education,… and international education support for smart/intelligent who get the best grade”, while also emphasizing that “universities will be equipped to take part in every single Olympic sport”

  • Why Nigeria’s planned rebranding failed, by Ben Bruce

Why Nigeria’s planned rebranding failed, by Ben Bruce

Three major events – Civil  War, Miss World Beauty Pageants crisis in 2001 and the Boko Haram insurgency – led to the failure of the Federal Government’s planned rebranding, the Chairman of Silverbird Group, Mr. Ben Bruce, has said.

He spoke at the second edition of Marketer’s Evening held by the Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) in Lagos.

Speaking on theme, From local to global, building the Nigerian Brand, Bruce said the events had become bad public relations because of the inability of the government to effectively use the media to manage them.

He said over the years the  country had made effort to become a global brand but it was affected by the inability of the government to use the media effectively to win some of the wars that are rattling its global brand valuation, hence making the three events turned out to be a bad publicity that undermines its crave for a global brand brand.

“What is happening in Nigeria on the Boko Haram and the negative publicity it generated for us has happened three times in Nigeria without appropriate way to manage the crisis through the media,” he said.

According to him, the events denied Nigeria the opportunity to market its potential to the world, he said.

He said while the Biafra warlord, the late Chief Odimegwu Ojukwu,  used the media effectively as a propaganda tool and got the French Government backing, Nigeria could not.

“Nigerian won the war but Biafra won the battle using the media, the Radio Biafra,” he said.

Bruce also cited the Miss World Beauty Pageant in 2001, which was stopped by the government as another major event that affected the nation’s brand building.

He said the event, which the world could have reported to showcase the beauty of the nation and it’s potential as a brand, however, turned out to become a bad press for the nation following riots in some northern states over a story written by a national daily (not The Nation).

“My topic is promoting your brand across the globe. The whole world was in Nigeria and all eyes were on Nigeria. Agbani won the Miss World in South Africa and we hosted the event in Nigeria, which we spent millions of dollars to host. A few days to the event, over 100 world media had gathered in Nigeria,” he said.

However, he said Nigeria’s missed the opportunity to promote its brand offering to the world when the Kano crisis, which was aggravated by two lines in a story published in ThisDay led to planned attack against the Miss World event.

Boko Haram, Bruce said, appeared to be the mother of all threats against the effort by government to build the Nigerian brand.

The President of ADVAN, Mr. Kola Oyeyemi, said the evening provided an opportunity for marketing directors to gather periodically to deliberate on issues and concepts that would move marketing industry forward.

He said the event also gives them opportunities to be abreast of events that are changing the marketing landscape, such as technology, change in consumer behaviour, among others.
