Benue killings: I’m profusely sorry for my comments-Lalong

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong,  has tendered his unreserved apologies to the people of Benue State and Nigerians over the comments he made following the murder of over 60 people by herdsmen in two local government areas.

Lalong had told newsmen that he warned Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue against passing the anti-grazing law which was believed to have caused the deadly killings by the herdsmen.

The governor’s statement was widely criticised as highly insensitive and suggestive of justifying the killings and grave injuries inflicted on the villagers by the unidentified herdsmen.

However,  Lalong, at the weekend in Abuja,  told newsmen that his comments would not in any way help in the resolution of the crisis.

While expressing his belief in the sanctity of human lives,  the governor said Plateau State has a strong affinity with all states in the Middle Belt, especially Benue which was carved out of Plateau State, noting that his initial comments were misconstrued and misinterpreted.

He said: “I am here to comment on my statement concerning the lingering issue. That is my comment after the presidential visit in respect of the crisis in Benue State.

“Once again, let me use this opportunity extend my deepest sympathies and extend our condolences to the people of  Benue State over this great loss. My prayer is that God will continue to give them and every Nigerian the fortitude to bear the loss.

“I must say that I humbly apologise for my comments because I have seen that it was really misconceived and misinterpreted. That generated a lot of social media writeup here and there about the issue. I apologise for that because neither the argument for or against helps the matter because it involves lives.

“I have great respect for the sanctity of human lives and the unity of the Middle Belt. I would not say Plateau is fighting Benue State at all. We are brothers and sisters. Benue was created out of Plateau. Nasarawa was created out of Pleteau.

“We still remain brothers and sisters. So I extend my prayers to all of them and I pray that God Almighty will give them the fortitude to bear the loss and grant the souls of the departed eternal rest.

“This is to tell those who are for and against  that there is need, especially at this time when lives are involved, for all of us to join hands to ensure that we work towards  the resolution of the matter and helping in ensuring peace not only in Benue, but in Nigeria.”

FG urges restraint in media coverage of farmers/herders’ crisis in Benue

The Federal Government is seeking ‘utmost restraint’ by the media and the public over the  recent farmers/herders’ clash in Benue State.

This, according to Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed,is necessary    in order not to further inflame passion and worsen the situation.

Mohammed,in a statement in Abuja, said while the Federal Government “is working hard to address the situation with a view to preventing a recurrence, not just in Benue State but everywhere across the country, it is incumbent on the media and public commentators not to engage in actions that can aggravate the crisis.”

But he explained that the appeal does mean that  the media “should not cover the crisis nor asking public commentators to desist from commenting on it. All we are saying is that both must be circumspect.”

He added:’’The current poisoned atmosphere of incendiary comments, unrestrained use of pictures and footages that offend human sensibilities as well as fingerpointing can only exacerbate the situation and complicate ongoing efforts to end the crisis.’’

Alhaji Mohammed said the Federal Government is “absolutely saddened by the loss of lives and the destruction of property resulting from the crisis, and recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari, in commiserating with the Benue Governor, unreservedly condemned the killings and also assured of the necessary security measures to prevent further attacks and bring the perpetrators to book.”

Makurdi protest: Ortom appeals for calm

Gov Samuel Ortom on Saturday appealed to protesters in some parts of Makurdi, the state capital, to remain calm and directed security operatives to restore order.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Makurdi residents took to the streets in peacefully protest, over the killings in Guma and Logo local Government councils.

Gov. Ortom, made the call in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and ICT, Mr Tahav Agerzua in Makurdi.

The governor strongly condemned the protests in some parts of the state capital and directed all security operatives especially, the Commissioner of Police Mr Bashir Makama, to ensure restoration of order in the affected areas.

“The governor appeals to residents to remain calm and report any breach of peace to security agencies for necessary action.

“The state has suffered too much losses in terms of human lives and property and cannot afford another round of crisis.

“The Police should arrest those who cause trouble whoever they are, investigate the causes of the protests, and prosecute those responsible for breach of the peace,” Ortom directed.

He assured Benue people that efforts would be intensified with the collaboration of the relevant security agencies to restore peace and order to all parts of the state.(NAN)

    Ekweremadu mourns with Benue

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu yesterday commiserated with the government and people of Benue State following the mass burial of the victims of  herdsmen attacks.

Ekweremadu expressed sadness over the incident and reiterated his call for decetralised policing.

This is contained in a statement by the Special Adviser (Media) to the Deputy Senate President, Uche Anichukwu.

Ekweremadu said: “This is a black Thursday, not only for the people of Benue State, but also for the entire nation. My heartfelt condolences go to the government and people of Benue State as the victims of the suspected herdsmen attacks are committed to mother earth.

“While I join fellow Nigerians to pray for the peaceful repose of the souls of the victims and for fortitude to those who lost their loved ones, let me reiterate that we must avert such future occurrences by urgently rethinking our security system.

“As I have always maintained, the reasonable thing to do right away is to decentralise our police system to enable every federating unit to take its fate in its own hand in effectively protecting the lives and property of its citizens and residents. This is the primary object of government”.

  • Benue: What PMB must do

    Benue: What PMB must do

SIR: We cannot also sweep under the carpet the intelligence shared by Senator Dagiri Alkali, the leader of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) that the herdsmen wields arms (AK47, Pump Action Machinegun, knives, charms, among other assault weaponry) as a form of self defence against cattle rustling.  His words “…The Cattle rustlers have displaced the Fulani in Katsina, Zamfare, Kebbi, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau and Benue and in some parts of Kogi. Millions of cattle have been taken from these herdsmen. So when somebody says a Fulani man killed somebody, I wonder why? How? It’s only a poor man that fights. But you, as the military people, you know self defence is an art. In the military, if you are attacked, you have to defend yourself. You have been squeezed; you have to find a way to survive.

In a saner clime, Senator Alkali by now should have been invited for explanation on how his group acquires these arms into the nation for their ‘poor’ boys to ‘defend’ themselves.

The fact is there is no better explanation for some group of people to invade MOPOL Base in Benue and slaughter officers under any guise except TERRORISM. The President has been blackmailed by some quarters that he is quiet to give a clear policy direction to check these terrorists because he is also a Fulani man, and because he also rears cattle. I wish Your Excellency can address this from both fronts of strategic policy framework and operational attack on internal security forces.

It is against this background that I strongly urge the president to present executive bills on grazing and national livestock development to the National Assembly. I know that the National Anti-grazing bill may raise some eye brow; this is why the National Livestock Development Bill is necessary to provide a policy framework for the establishment of livestock reserves for grazing across the country, most especially in the North.

The office of the National Security Adviser and all service chiefs should develop a workable, effective and sustainable community security model. As at the last time agriculture-security related issues were discussed by this present government, the Minister of Agriculture Audu Ogbeh had contracted the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to protect plants and livestock with a special strike force unit called Agro-Rangers Unit across the nation.

The President should declare the Miyetti Allah as a terrorist group; as a form of reformation of the Nigeria Cattle Breeders Association, a new group could be formed by the government with comprehensive identities of members known.

FG, other stakeholders urged to find solution to Benue killings to avert famine

The Federal Government and well meaning Nigerians have been urged to find lasting solution to the incessant killings and destruction in Benue State to avert famine.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state prides itself as the “Food Basket of the Nation’’ due to decades of huge farming activity by the people.

The state boasts of high yielding yams, rice, soya beans as well as variety fruits.

Dr Obadiah Mailafia, the former Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), made the call in a keynote lecture delivered at the presentation of three books by Amb. Joy Ogwu on Thursday in Abuja.

In the lecture entitled; “The Crisis of Leadership and World Order”, Mailafia urged the leadership of the country on the need to ensure peace and harmony to accelerate the nation’s growth and development.

Mailafia, who was also former Special Adviser to the President on Economic and Policy Matters, said killings in the Middle Belt were taking on a genocidal proportion and may undermine national food security.

The Economist and International Development Specialist, however, commended the Federal Government for the efforts made so far in addressing security challenge in parts of the country.

“Without peace and harmony, nothing good will come, but without justice, there can be no peace to speak of.

“We are encouraged by the enormous efforts our military, through the leadership of the present administration to break the back of the Boko Haram insurgency.

“However, there are still many more rivers to cross. We need to finish the job and build a framework for a just and lasting peace in the northeast and the rest of the country.”

According to him, there is the problem of the so-called marauding herdsmen who are waging a de facto war in the Middle Belt, which is the bread basket of our country.

“These killings can also undermine ultimately the future of our federation.

“The task falls on our generation to re-imagine Nigeria as a land of peace, a land of justice, a land of progress, a land based on the precepts of democracy.

“A land that is governed based on the rule of law, enlightenment and civilised value.

“We need a coalition of Nigerians who believe in our manifest as the leader of our glorious continent,” he said.

Mailafia said Nigeria had a world historic destiny as the leader of Africa and the black race as a whole.

According to him, the country’s vocation is to build a first class technological industrial democracy and to safeguard the integrity and honour of the continent.

“We are meant to be a city set on a hill- alight unto nations. But we can only fulfill that destiny if we reinvent our nation as a country.

“The country must be anchored on positive science, peace, the rule of law, social justice and humane values.

“In so doing we must remain open to the world, to Europe, Asia and the Americas- building partnerships that promote trade, investments and a rules-based international system that guarantees the security of all nations’’, he said.

This he noted required nothing less than a new ethos of leadership.

“We would not only rebuild our world, we will be the salt of the earth, the pillars of world order and civilisation itself’’, Mailafia said.

Prof. Jerry Gana, who was the Chairman of the occasion, said there was the need to pay adequate attention to leadership development, adding that nothing could happen without good leadership.

The former Minister of Information and Culture also stressed the need for Nigerians to see themselves as one and stop all wanton killings and destruction in the country.

“Instead of being our brother’s keeper we have become our brother’s killer, which is very disturbing’’.

Ogwu, who in her remarks called on all to be good citizens, said that was the prerequisite of leadership.

The author of the three books, stressed the need for everyone to be loyal to the country, saying that it was the only way the nation could forge ahead.

The former Nigeria Permanent Representative at the UN, urged Nigerians to be involved in politics, adding that politics should not be left only for politicians alone. (NAN)

  • Benue: A ‘Satanic’ Affliction Upon A Race

Benue: A ‘Satanic’ Affliction Upon A Race

    BY Audu Entonu

Certainly, these are not the best of times for Benue people. There is pain, sorrow and lamentations on the land.  A land once purified by the blessings and peace of our ancestors has become a killing field. The bloodbath is abhorring and the cries so loud and trenchant. Everybody is feeling the pains now, especially, in Tiv land and indeed, all Benue.

Unfortunately though, those who are indifferent, hardened and unsympathetic to the mood in the land are Benue’s political leaders cum gladiators’, led by the Executive Governor of Benue state,  Hon. Samuel Ortom and  his clique of power mongers. They are unperturbed and undaunted by preserving invented schemes that have made people of the state permanent guests in the kingdom of sorrows. Insofar as it service their personal political interests and lubricates a repulsive ego of triumphalism on the political turf, all is fair.

So, they are mindless and irreligiously non-challant   to these afflictions,  the unconscionable pursuit of power has wrought on the people with the harvest of tears. Religion is key to our lives as Africans. But most times, we use it in negation in the quest for power.  It keeps reminding me very sadly about the days preceding the ascension of  Ortom  to the seat of Governor of Benue.

He wielded and flaunted assorted platitudes ensconced in very touchy Biblical verses. He spoke of visions and revelations from God Almighty about crowning him Governor of the state in his life. He covenanted with the people, through God that he would rule the state with the fear of God.

He wailed on the streets and in every community at campaign fora;  he cried loudly while standing on the sacred altars of God in churches, reeling  out tons of afflictions of his people, whom  God has promised to mandate him with power to remedy.

However, if all prophecies as proclaimed by Governor Ortom were false, cooked or contrived, at least, the rough guess of enthroning him Governor of the state has come to pass. Ortom has been Governor of Benue state for nearly three years today.

But I am baffled and nervous that the Governor has not solved even one of the afflictions of his people, which he claimed, God ordained him to resolve.  And he does not appear worried at this glaring violation of the covenant with his people or how his actions offend God and the multifaceted failures of his administration.

At best, Governor Ortom has overlooked these afflictions; aggravated the severity of some of them and created fresh ones with killer venom and devastations. Peace has deserted the land he holds sway as Governor.

Alien afflictions of the people have reached frightening new fathoms and what we hear at organized and partisan fora is the necessity of Governor Ortom continuing in office.  He bought this idea from day-one in office. So, he has unceasingly sold the seed of discord, violence and bloodbath to impoverish the people economically and psychologically with infinite sorrows. This is practiced ploy to divert attention from his concealed, but deviously explored plots to perpetuate himself in power.

Its common psychology that when you destabilize and devastate a people,  with killings or deaths, they have no time to think about politics. They are plunged in an endless orgy of mourning and bemoaning of their beloved lost ones.

And so, the “smart” politician like Ortom would seize the opportunity to bandy another round of dubious prophecies alleging it emanated from God to stealthily grab the mandate again.  To him, the sacred name of God Almighty is an effective tranquilizer on the people,   to blend and raise a political platform of deception of people.

This has been the brief history of Governor Ortom’s political sojourn in Benue state.  And it is easy to decipher from the outset when he ventured into the governorship race in 2015. The manner of his rejection and eventually ouster through a failed nomination as flagbearer of the PDP, his original political party on which platform he contested governorship was a key eye opener to Benue people. But they ignored the signs of God directly speaking to them.

Governor Ortom dissatisfied and irretrievable bent on actualizing a satanic ambition to rule Benue, defected overnight. And in less than 24 hours, the equally cursed political goons of Benue; souls who drink and eat from the same shrine of darkness like Ortom handed him the APC party nomination ticket on a platter of gold.  His new handlers subdued and undermined all other viable contestants to embrace Governor Ortom.

The manner of this emergence was very ungodly. And God  exposed  Ortom  to emerge the  APC governorship flagbearer through this style  to allow the people sense the evil of tomorrow. But once again, Benue the people took no special notice by faulting this process and rejecting him at the polls.

They overwhelmingly voted him at the polls and consciously planted a King  Pharaoh to rule over them. At daybreak, the people realized the terrible mistake and attempted to fight back to reclaim their mandate.  But the dark forces again prevailed with interventions and eventually a court verdict foisted Governor Ortom on Benue with a legal seal.

And it did not take long before the people started harvesting the results of their tenacious disobedience to God’s command and signs. Therefore, Ortom has manifested everything God only in words; but everything Lucifer in actions in the administration of the state.   What we harvest in Benue under Governor Ortom is endless bloodbath, massacres,   sorrow and pains in varied and sophisticated forms.

I know Ortom’s supporters are likely to still insist that God anointed him King over Benue. But truly God Almighty, we ask you in tears rhetorically and in humble supplications’ that if Ortom was Your true messenger, why had he to cheat or apply criminal schemes to ascend to power in 2015?  Now, we are saddled with afflictions!

Oh God Almighty, when will these afflictions end in our land?  Have we wronged or hurt You so deeply that you cannot forgive us?  Why are You still consenting to the afflictions Governor Ortom has imposed on Benue people?

Today, Oh Lord our God, hundreds of your children starve to bed; their children cannot go school; we cannot afford medical bills for common ailments such as malaria fever and people are dying quietly because of sufferings. And life is generally, very bleak and meaningless to us because the man, who claimed You anointed him Governor has deliberately refused to pay our salaries.

Oh Lord, it is a Biblical injunction You handed down to us through the Prophets that a labourer deserves his wages. In Benue under Governor Ortom, we labour day and night, but he does not consider us worthy of our wages.

As if these afflictions to Benue people, akin to what King Pharaoh did to the people of Israel in Egypt are not enough, Governor has persistently increased this yoke of burden on us. The Governor arms our youths against the visitors in our midst.  His armament of the Livestock Guards and Civilian JTF, which he sustains with monthly stipends, is worrisome. It  is just a decoy to blur suspicion, by  getting  these idle youths infused and familiarized with remote communities in order to use them for the 2019 elections.

Again, like civil servants, he has refused to pay them the paltry N15,000 monthly stipends for months. And an armed hungry youth is like a lion and a potential risk  to his community and sponsors. So, they probably,  went berserk, instigating the killings which have become another dark chapter in our beleaguered history.

Least, I be misconstrued! The killing of Tiv peasant farmers by herdsmen is condemnable and unacceptable. No sane society can condone such acts of aberrations’. Again, no amount of provocation is enough to justify the crude and gruesome termination of the life of a neighbor or any other human being. It offends both religious and secular laws.

But the snag in the whole absurd drama is the determination of Governor Ortom to blur the truth; to lie to the people of Benue and to mortgage his conscience for political expediency in his satanic lust for political power. He turns around to shed crocodile tears, boasting of dying for his people. These are all fake posturings to curry undeserved sympathy from Benue people still ignorant of the intricacies of the grand designs  behind the scenes.   Or ask me,  did  Governor Ortom ever weep when the same youths he armed differently used the weapons to wipe out his personal aides and notable indigenes of the state from Benue Northeast, to Benue North West and Benue South? What has he done to curb recurrence?

We shall be fooling ourselves, if we seem to perceive the current crisis; the killings, the tensions and other acts of lawlessness entrenched in the state, without rumination on these deep insights.  Governor Ortom is not new to public administration, having started as a council chairman. He is so versed in governance and security protocols to have armed any militia for a genuine purpose, as law enforcers, without the consent, collaboration and guidance of the appropriate security authorities.

The result is what we regrettably have today on our hands- the senseless bloodletting. Let Governor Ortom be bold enough to tell Benue the truth and confess his sins against the people, as propelled by weird political ambitions.

‘Killings still going on in Benue’

A group, Community Development Coalition (CDC), has raised the alarm that Fulani herdsmen are still carrying out killings in Guma and Logo local government areas of Benue State.

The atrocities, they said were occurring despite the deployment of police operatives and the relocation of the Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim, to the state.

The CDC Convener, Prof. Yima Sen, told journalists at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, that he had visited the affected communities and was informed that the violent attacks by the herdsmen had not abated.

Sen expressed dissatisfaction with the security situation, noting that the security forces on the ground have been unable to stop the bloodshed across the state.

“I left the crisis area about 5 hours ago and from my consultations with the people, killings are still going on; am not satisfied, if I tell you that am satisfied with the security situation, I would be lying. I have also consulted with the people and they are not satisfied with the situation,” he stated.

The CDC vowed to do all that is legally and humanly possible to ensure the full implementation of the Benue state anti-open grazing prohibition law.

It said it would also facilitate “the emergence of a robust, reliable and sustainable community-driven defence and security system.”

The group rejected the proposed cattle colonies for herdsmen by the Federal Government, insisting that no inch of Benue land would be given out to the herdsmen.

Sen said, “We can’t be colonized by the Fulanis, they can ranch, but if anyone is talking about cattle colonies, they should find another location, not Benue.”

He highlighted the benefits of ranching, which he said would increase productivity and guarantee safety of the animals and the herdsmen, describing it as a civilized way of keeping livestock.

The CDC Convener accused President Muhammadu Buhari of turning a blind eye to the atrocities of the herdsmen.

He said, “We are left with no option than to conclude that the President, who by the way, is the grand patron of Miyetti Allah, has turned a blind eye and is bent on keeping deaf ears, to these atrocities, or that he is actively involved in this diabolical and outrageous scheme.”

Senator donates relief materials to displaced persons in Nasarawa

Following the attacks on some communities along the  Nasarawa/Benue border by suspected herdsmen, Sen. Suleiman Adokwe has donated relief materials to displaced persons in the area.

Adokwe, who represents Nasarawa South Senatorial District, made the donation on Wednesday at the Internally Displaced Persons ( IDPs )  camp at  Awe,  Awe Local Government Area of the state.

The senator  described the attacks as unfortunate and urged the IDPs to be patient and law abiding in the interest of development.

The lawmaker, who was represented Mr  James Agbo,  donated over 1,000 tubers of yam, 20 bags of rice, 20 jerrycans of palm oil, 20 bags of salt and  20 cartons of  soap among others.

“ We are here to sympathise and to donate relief materials to the IDPs  who are taking refuge as a result of the recent killing in Nasarawa/Benue border communities.

“The killing is  unfortunate  in an area where  people that have been living and  farming together wake up and find  themselves in this kind of situation.

“It is very sad that this  farmers/herdsmen crisis is no longer  localised, but a national issue.

“I wish that the Federal Government takes  a measure quickly in order to find a way of stopping this  crisis in the interest of peace and development.

“I will use my position as their representative at the upper chamber of the National Assembly to liaise with the government to provide adequate security for the protection of lives and properties of my constituents, the state and Nigeria at large,” he said.

Adokwe, who is  also  the Chairman of the  Senate Committee on Information and Culture,  assured the people of his constituency of   robust and quality representation.

Mr  Charles Gusa, who spoke on behalf of the IDPs,  lauded the humanitarian gesture of  Adokwe and called on other politicians and individuals to emulate him.

Gusa also urged the government to provide adequate security in  the affected communities to enable IDPs  return home.

The senator’s delegation had earlier paid  homage to the Emir of Awe, Alhaji Abubakar Umar, who had commended the humanitarian gesture.

Reports say that there are more than 15,000 IDPs camped in different  locations in the state.
