PDP to APC: search your conscience on Benue, Rivers, Kaduna killings

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to search its conscience on the killings in Benue, Rivers and Kaduna States.

In a statement yesterday by its spokesman, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, the party described the massacre of defenseless Nigerians in the three states as extremely wicked.

It also flayed as inexcusable, the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to act upon early danger signs and threats by taking cautionary measures that could have averted the killings, particularly in Benue State.

The opposition party further lamented what it termed the insensitivity of the APC Presidency, which it said, reacted to the ugly incidents only after the PDP and well-meaning Nigerians called them to task.

The PDP also called on the Presidency to do some soul-searching with regards to its silence and loud indifference whenever citizens fall under such horrifying attacks.

“What a way to start the new year? The sheer insensitivity of the APC Government has continued to cause our nation a lot of pain and sorrow.

“Is it not only a careless and inept leadership like the APC government that will ignore the danger signs in any part of the country and leave its citizens defenseless, just to be massacred by marauders?

“If the APC Federal Government had effectively acted upon the danger signs and had provided adequate security in flash points across the country, particularly in Benue state, north central and Southern Kaduna area, this massacre of Nigerians, who were already impoverished by the APC’s misrule, could have been prevented.

“Is it not a tragic trajectory of governance that while the APC Presidency was busy basking in its orchestrated New Year self-praise and empty promises, bandits were having a field day mowing down citizens in cold blood?

“Is it not also an irony that when the government was prompted to react to the spate of killings, all its officials could do was to respond in manners most indifferent, nearly unconcerned and almost without compassion?

“Indeed, the PDP aligns with Nigerians that the APC and the Presidency should have a serious soul searching on their clear indifference towards the persistent killings and maiming of citizens by bandits who constantly invade communities, slaughter the people and walk away with blood of our compatriots in their hands”.

The party urged the government to show commitment by ensuring that the perpetrators of these killings were brought to book and made to face the full wrath of the law.

It also urged the military and other security agencies to leave no stone unturned in the fishing out the perpetrators.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us; every citizen has a right to life and no man should take the life of another for any reason or under any guise whatsoever,” the statement added.

Benue killings: ASUU wants Buhari to arrest culprits

The Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU ) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to go beyond condemning the killings by Fulani herdsmen in the country but arrest and prosecute perpetrators.

It also called for victims’ compensation for those who lost their properties and relations in Rivers, Benue and Kwara states.

The union said the rising insecurity profile under the present administration shows a faulty security architecture and policy.

ASUU in a release signed by its University of Ibadan Chairman, Dr Deji Omole described as a sign of irresponsibility on the part of the Buhari Led federal government not to have tamed the ravaging killer-herdsmen.

Omole who said that the Buhari government who claimed to have special interest in agriculture has failed security competency test to protect vulnerable farmers in indigenous areas of Nigeria added that the president through his inactions to Fulani carnages is compounding humanitarian and food crises in Nigeria.

The ASUU boss who said that Nigeria will suffer when farmers are killed at-will lamented that the consequences of killing farmers is food insecurity.

According to Omole, the president is building a dangerous trend where citizens will rise to defend themselves by taking up arms since they are not protected by the state.

“The new year killings in some part of the country while the President was telling Nigerians that it has beaten Bokoharam should be rejected by all Nigerians. Time has come for all to rise and call on the government to fulfil her duties of protection of lives and properties or quit if it cannot do this. The government that wants people to go into agriculture but fold its arms when farmers are killed is not only irresponsive but also irresponsible. We have now added to the internally displaced profile of people in Nigeria. The problem is that the survivors are embittered that their government cannot protect them but prefers to set up campaign team for 2019 general elections. All victims must be compensated and all governors must visit the victims the way they all stormed Abuja to greet the son of the president who is hospitalised. If the son of the president is fortified with security meant for over 1,000 people even in hospital, it shows that the ruling class does not value the lives of ordinary Nigerians. ”

CAN seeks arrest of Kaduna, Benue violence perpetrators

The Northern States chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria ( CAN ) on Thursday urged the Federal Government to arrest and prosecute perpetrators of recent killings in Benue and Kaduna States.

The Chairman, Rev. Yakubu Pam, who condemned the attacks in a press statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna, said the government should also take proactive measures to curb future occurrence.

It said the killing of the District Head of Numana in Kaduna state and 50 people in Benue was condemnable, disturbing and worrisome.

“We call for calm in both communities and appeal to government to step up security not only in these victims’ communities but the entire country to forestall future killings.

“CAN is disturbed by allegations of security complacency and should be thoroughly investigated by the government to assuage already frayed nerves.”

The statement assured the government of the Church support and urged church leaders nationwide to calm their members and report any threat to security to law enforcement agencies.(NAN)

  • PDP condemns Benue attack, urges presidency to intervene

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has condemned Tuesday’s attack by gunmen on Benue farmers, calling on the presidency to arrest and bring the culprits to book.

The PDP Publicity Secretary in Benue, Mr Bemgba Iortyom made the call in a statement on Wednesday in Makurdi.

“Once again, heavily armed gunmen on January 2, unleashed violence and mayhem on some rural communities in Benue.

“This time in Guma and Logo Local Government Areas (LGAs), killing a yet to be determined number of peasant farmers, women, children and the aged inclusive.

“The assailants also visited arson on property of the locals on a massive scale which is also yet to be estimated in terms of monetary value.

“The Benue Chapter of the PDP totally condemns this barbaric act which qualifies by every standard as terrorism employed in the pursuit of an agenda which is genocide in character,’’ it stated.

The party said it was in alignment with the position of Gov. Samuel Ortom that the Federal Government must move quickly to provide security to the people of the state as well as bring the perpetrators of the acts of criminality to book.

According to the PDP, gunmen violence against farmers should be graded on same level with menace of Boko Haram insurgency and treated with an equally commensurate degree of security attention.

“Evidence abound that the gunmen killing of Benue farmers, burning down their homes and destroying their farms, crops, farm produce and properties, do not differ from Boko Haram insurgents in mode and method of operation, as well as extent of impact and devastation on their victims.

“We also use this opportunity to reaffirm our support for the law prohibiting open grazing of livestock in Benue State as the surest antidote, both in the short and long terms, to the menace of gunmen attack in the state.

“We urge Gov. Ortom to explore broad-based and bi-partisan approaches involving all segments of the Benue community towards bolstering internal cooperation measures for the effectiveness and sustainability of the law,’’ the statement added.

About 20 persons were killed after some gunmen attacked communities in Guma and Logo LGAs on Tuesday.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Moses Yamu, announced this in a statement.

“Eight herdsmen, six in Guma and two in Logo, had been arrested in connection with the attacks,” the police spokesman said.

He added that the command had made additional deployments to the troubled area to forestall further occurrence and restore confidence of the people.

Yamu stressed the situation in the two local government areas had been brought under control while investigation was ongoing.

He said:“They attacked Tomater village in Sengev Council ward, Akor village in Nzorov council ward and Bakin Kwata village in Umanger council ward of Guma LGA.

“Among those killed were seven (7) members of Benue State Livestock Guards, their vehicle burnt and an uncertain number of persons injured in separate attacks between 31/12/2017 and 02/01/2018.

“All the injured from both LGAs are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals in the State.”

According to him, five combined teams of mobile and conventional policemen led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, ACP Emmanuel Adesina have engaged the armed herdsmen in a gun duel in Guma.

  • Bloody new year gift for Rivers, Benue

Bloody new year gift for Rivers, Benue

What is the worth of human life in Nigeria?

Rivers and Benue states got a curious New Year gift-bloodshed. Hopes were dashed. Dreams were truncated. Families were plunged into sorrow and confusion. The news of the disaster reverberated across the country.  Security agencies were taken aback.

In Rivers, 17 were shot dead in an attack on church worshippers on New Year’s Day. In Benue, herdsmen were on the prowl, killing 20 people and injuring 30 others. The chief mourners are Governors Nyesom Wike and Samuel Ortom. But, the weight of calamities is borne by the families of the deceased. To a bewildered Federal Government that has invested substantially in security, the end has not justified the means.

In Rivers, the awful picture stared everybody in the face. The method of killing, and the timing, underscored the cruelty of the assassins. Violence seems to have become a culture in the oil-rich Niger Delta state. The latest attack was unprovoked by victims who were in a festive mood. After the mayhem, the rampaging gunmen disappeared. Obviously, it was evident that suspected militants and cultists have reneged on their promise to maintain peace, following a general amnesty.

In the last two and half years, Benue has not known peace. A tearful Ortom lamented that mindless killings had become an infection that has defiled solution. His agony is compounded by appeals for sanity that have repeatedly gone unheeded. The security challenge in the Northcenral state has often diverted his attention from governance. The gains of his security measures are on the reserve.

Can there be justification for the killings? What scores were the assailants trying to settle in Rivers? What was their mission? Who is their sponsor? Rivers had endured the scourge of pipeline vandalism, armed robbery, sea piracy, political thuggery and arson, kidnapping and other forms of social vices. Wike had succeeded in oersuading them to lay down their arms in the past. Is the criminality not being renewed?

The violent men were armed with sophisticated weapons. The riffles were very expensive. The attacks demonstrated criminal dexterity. The operation was smooth and swift. No trace was left behind.

There are puzzles: Is Rivers not back to the dark days? Has the militants been reined in? Having laid down their weapons, according to the terms of amnesty, where did the militants regroup. Where did they get new arms?  No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Who are the attackers?

Benue has a peculiar challenge. In the past, herdsmen posed no threat to any resident. They were friendly and at home with the people they met in the course of cattle rearing. Cases of destruction of crops were not rife. But, gone are the days when herdsmen were harmless.

What is the way out? In Rivers, the Federal Government has ordered the arrest and punishment of the perpetrators. It should not be an empty directive. The public enemies should be apprehended and brought to book. Security is a collective enterprise. Therefore, not only should residents be vigilant, they should also be willing to contribute to intelligence gathering in aid of security agencies.

In Benue, government should say “enough is enough”. How did Ekiti and other states manage to resolve the security challenge posed by herdsmen, as it were? Are the herdsmen and the real owners of the cattle above the law? Should the state be continually intimidated? Are the herdsmen bigger than Benue?

Even in the face of troubled Federalism that renders governors helpless in security matters, Ortom – and other governors – should not throw up their hands in surrenders. The matter must be resolved one way of the other.

Community lauds anti-open grazing law in Benue

Some prominent residents of Mbakyoondu in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue says the Anti-Open Grazing Prohibition law enacted in the state will guarantee security.

The residents made the observation when Mr Terver Wever, Group Head, Real Estate and Infrastructure Development of Benue Investment and Property Company, hosted them on Tuesday as part of activities to mark the end of 2017.

According to them, the law, enacted by Gov. Samuel Ortom recently, will prevent further clashes among herdsmen and farmers.

They described the law as the best thing that had happened to the state to stem the wave of insecurity across the state.

Mrs Nancy Yeke, a councilor in the ward, expressed joy, noting that the enactment of the law was a landmark achievement of the Ortom’s administration.

Another resident, Mama Mwarga Chia, a widow, appreciated Wever’s decision to help the needy during the New Year’s celebration, asking the community members to pray for him.

In his comments, Wever highlighted some of the achievements of Ortom’s administration that had direct bearing on the people.

He said the administration had introduced unified sacks as standard of measurement for farm produce to discourage traders from exploiting farmers.

He also urged the youth in the community to acquire skills to be self-reliant and boost the state’s economy.

The high points of the occasion included cash donations, bags of rice, a cow and cloths, among other food items.

Father of oil magnate kidnapped in Benue

  • Supply shortfall cause of fuel scarcity – Kachikwu

Supply shortfall cause of fuel scarcity – Kachikwu

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, says the major cause of the fuel scarcity currently being witnessed across the country is shortfall in supply of petroleum products.

Kachikwu, who stated this in a news briefing on Thursday in Abuja, however, said that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ( NNPC ) was making efforts to ensure that queues at filling stations disappeared in a couple of days.

“Presently, queues in Lagos have reduced. We know that Lagos, Abuja, Benue, Port Harcourt were among the worst-hit areas.

“Benue has been dealt with; Port Harcourt is quite moderated. Apart from these areas, other places in the country are probably liquid.

“The major problem is the gap in terms of volume, because NNPC is the only one importing the product to the country,” he said.

The minister assured that there was adequate storage facility for imported products, adding that emergency measures were in place to ensure that the products were available during the Yuletide and post-January.

He said that four vessels laden with petroleum products would “berth in a few days and a total of 20 cargoes are also expected with petroleum products’’.

Kachikwu said that the NNPC had, as at Wednesday, discharged products at its depots, adding that emergency supply, quick truck delivery and stricter monitoring were measures adopted to ensure that queues disappeared.

He added that NNPC would use additional trucking to major cities using strategic reserves from Suleja, Minna, Gusau and Gombe.

This, he said, would help to service Abuja, Kano and Sokoto axis to feed the North-West, North-East.

“I have asked the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency to ensure stricter sanctions on any station that refuses to abide by the rules.

“They need to take a firm action to ensure that we get quick results,’’ he said.

Kachikwu further assured that the market would be flooded with more products to cushion effects of over-subscription through Kaduna refinery production, adding that Port Harcourt was expected to start producing 2.1 million litres of petrol per day.

He said that it was expected that with the adopted strategies, the queues would “slide down’’ in one week.

On long-term strategy, he said that ultimate result would come when the refineries resumed optimal production.

The minister said that work would commence effectively in the refineries in January.

Executive Secretary of DPR, Mr Modecai Ladan, said that many sanctions awaited filling stations found compromising the dispensing process, warning that the stations would be shut down or charged N275 per litre.

He said that any station found hoarding products would either be sealed or its product auctioned or dispensed free-of-charge to consumers.

Ladan added that depending on the offence, defaulters may be shut down for six months or blacklisted.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a drive round Abuja metropolis and highways revealed that only a few filling stations were opened for operation, serving long queues.
