    Gangs in Benue surrender arms

The amnesty programme of Governor Samuel Ortom received a boost yesterday when gangs from Kwande Local Government surrendered automatic weapons.

Ortom, who spoke at the Benue People’s House when he received the AIG Zone 4, Mr. Yahaya Ardo, expressed delight that the programme was yielding positive results.

He said it was extended at the request of Terwase Akwaza, alias Ghana, who surrendered arms at the end of last month when the programme was expected to end.

The governor said Akwaza pleaded for an extension to enable some of his members embrace the programme.

He said it was needed to recover illegal arms, to make the state safe for investment and boost social activities.

“If we can secure life and property, my plans to industrialise the state, create jobs, wealth and opportunities through micro, small and medium scale enterprises will materialise.”

Ortom assured the police and other security agencies of his government’s resolve to provide logistics to them to enhance their operations.

He said: “I assure the police and other security agencies of our support through logistics, to enable them perform.”

The governor noted that his administration intended to wield the ‘big stick’ at the end of the amnesty programme on criminals still keeping arms.

He enjoined law-enforcement agencies to apprehend defaulters at the end of the September deadline.

Ortom hailed the Inspector- General of Police for fighting crimes.

Ardo requested assistance from the government and stakeholders, including traditional, religious and community leaders, in intelligence gathering.

He praised the police boss for improving the welfare of the force.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Col. Edwin Jando (rtd), said the surrendered arms were expected by the committee.

The council, presided over by Governor Samuel Ortom, took the decision while accepting a memorandum submitted by the Ministry of Information and Orientation.

Entertainers add colour, as Dream Centre opens in Benue

Makurdi, the capital of Benue State witnessed an unusual glitz, as celebrities such as Ghanaian actress Jackie Appiah, Nigerian comedian Gordons, and others joined the First Lady of the state, Mrs. Eunice Ortom, to honour popular enterpreneur, Love Idoko, who was launching a new event place, The Dream Centre.

The event also had a large delegation of women made up of wives of commissioners, State Head of Service and heads of other government agencies and establishments at the commissioning ceremony of the edifice, as well as the clergy, led by the State PFN chairman, Rev Mike Ango.

Guests lauded the initiative as one which has raised the bar of event centers in the Nigeria’s Food Basket State.

Love Idoko told the gathering that she was inspired to set up the facility during her certificate course in West University UK. “I have travelled round the world and it bothered me that there is no world class event center in Benue State, so I said to myself that we would do something about it and here we are today.”

Mrs. Ortom described the celebrant as an inspiration to other women in the state and Nigeria as a whole. ”Love Idoko is a source of inspiration to every young woman out there and I’m glad to be part of this platform, we will continue to support enterpreneural drive in Benue and I assure Love of my continual support and wish The Dream Centre successful business,” she said.

Ghanaian actress, Jackie Appiah, who revealed that she had to cancel all her appointments to grace the occasion, said, “ Benue state has always been a place where I receive the most pleasurable reception outside Ghana, if only for Benue State I will keep coming to Nigeria. By the way, this is not about me; it is about Love and the newest event center in Nigeria, ‘The Dream Centre’. It is a pleasure to be here at the opening.”

Other guests at the event are Justice J T Tsoho of the Federal High Court Lagos, heads of government and private organisations, beauty queens, and Board chairman of NTA, Chief Patrick Ogbu.

  • Rep petitions NHRC over soldiers’ invasion of Benue community

For about an hour yesterday, a member of the House of Representatives representing Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency of Benue State, Dickson Tarkighir, narrated how some soldiers allegedly invaded a community in his constituency at night and destroyed it.

Tarkighir was at the Abuja headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) with some leaders from the affected community – the North Bank 2 – in Makurdi Local Government Area, to present a petition to the commission and seek its intervention.

The lawmaker wrote and read a petition to those present before presenting it to the NHRC’s Executive Secretary, Prof Bem Angwe.

He said the night raid was the fallout of a disagreement between some indigenes and a soldier, identified as Private Innocent Okoro.

Tarkighir said: “On the night of August 14, some soldiers from the NASME Barracks in North Bank 2 of Makurdi Local Government Area embarked on what they called a reprisal attack on the community. This so-called reprisal attack was triggered by an altercation earlier in the day between a soldier, PTE Innocent Okoro, and three other young men over a lady.

“The reprisal attack carried with it the hallmark of a lawless society as soldiers showed their disregard for civil authority in the pursuit of ‘justice’ and descended on a community in the night, beating up the residents and commuters as they also set ablaze over 200 cars, shattering the glasses to over 100 houses and about 150 other cars they did not have the time to set ablaze.

“This sordid act lasted up till the early hours August 15. Left in its aftermath were charred remains of burnt cars, hundreds of injured residents in hospitals, shattered windscreens of cars, punctured tyres of vehicles, broken windows and doors to residential apartments and a community in tears,     wondering what wrong they had done.”

The lawmaker said his decision to petition the NHRC was informed by the alleged impunity by the soldiers, which he said showed “very clearly, a demonstration of utter disdain by a few misguided soldiers towards the capacity of our democratic institutions to tackle challenges for which essence they exist”.

He added: “This is a worrying tendency that needs to be nipped in the bud before it overwhelms democracy.”

Tarkighir urged the commission to “cause a full investigation into the remote and immediate causes to the violation of human rights, as it were, by the soldiers and to ensure the prosecution of all culprits as well as compensation for the victims of the dastardly act”.

Angwe hailed the petitioners for expressing their grievances rather than taking the law into their hands.

He said: “I wish to state, on behalf of NHRC, that we will investigate this petition. There is no policy on the part of the Federal Government of Nigeria to condone the violation of the rights of any Nigerian by any agency of the government. There is no policy put in place by the hierarchy of the Nigerian military for the violation of the rights of any Nigerian.

“With the commitment expressed today by the military to subject itself to the nation’s Constitution and to all civil authorities, the NHRC will request the full cooperation of the hierarchy of the military to ensure that the perpetrators off this alleged violations are not only identified but are also punished.”

Angwe said his commission would ensure appropriate compensation, after ascertaining the veracity of the allegation and the extent of damage.

Gang leader surrenders 84 rifles in Benue

    •Ortom extends amnesty

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom yesterday granted amnesty to a notorious criminal gang leader, Terwase Akwaza (aka  Ghana).

The governor also extended the amnesty period for the surrender of illegal weapons till end of this month.

He told reporters at the end of a Security Council meeting that Akwaza responded to his call to surrender the weapons he possessed illegally.

Ortom urged him to desist from his activities, which he said constituted a security threat to individuals and communities in Benue and Taraba states.

The governor said the amnesty became necessary, following a plea by the gang leader that he needed time to persuade some of his friends to follow suit.

He expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari, his Taraba State counterpart, Darius Ishiaku, the Catholic Bishop of Katsina-Ala Diocese, Bishop Peter Adoboh and others for supporting the amnesty programme.

Ortom said it had become imperative to secure the state so that a conducive environment would be created to attract investors and boost the state’s economic fortunes.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Colonel Edwin Jando (retd), said he received 135 assorted rifles and 770 rounds of ammunition from those who voluntarily surrendered, with 84 rifles from  Akwaza.

Akwaza said  he became a militia leader to secure his community but responded genuinely to calls from Ortom to embrace peace.

  • Benue tribunal resumes Sept. 7

    Benue tribunal resumes Sept. 7

The Benue State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Makurdi, the state capital, will resume sitting on September 7 to determine whether Governor Samuel Ortom was legally nominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Petitioner, Mr. Terhemen Tarzor is asking the Tribunal to nullify Dr. Ortom’s election and declare him (Tarzoor) as governor.

Certain legal and factual issues have, however, developed and may work  against Tarzoor.  First, in Suit No. FHC/MKD/CS/09/2015, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  had filed a pre-election action at the Federal High Court, Makurdi raising the same issues and claiming similar reliefs as the petition of Tarzoor was to later claim  relief in his petition.

On  May 21, this year, while Tarzoor’s matter  was still pending, the Federal High Court,  Makurdi dismissed the suit filed by the PDP. To date, the PDP has not appealed the final judgment.

This development prompted Senior Counsel to the APC, Sebastine Hon (SAN), to amend the APC’s reply to the petition and   raised the defence of res judicata, since the PDP and Tarzoor are co-joined in the disputed governorship election. Res Judicata means a matter that has been decided by  a  court of competent jurisdiction,  which the Tribunal needs not waste its time on.

In the motion on notice, Hon raised the issues of res judicata, abuse of court process, and lack of locus standi, saying Tarzoor,  pried into the internal affairs of the APC and other issues going to the jurisdiction of the Tribunal have been slated for hearing on  September 7, when parties are expected to adopt their final addresses before the Tribunal gives its final judgment.

Apart from res judicata, Chief Adeniyi Akintola (SAN) and Prof. Anthony Ijohor (SAN), counsel to Ortom and the Independent National Election Petition  (INEC), have raised similar points going to jurisdiction and their motions on notice and these  will  be entertained by the Tribunal on September 7.

Besides, Tarzoor called only one eyewitness to the rescheduled APC State Congress of December 10-11. He is Mr. Terkaa Andyar, a staff member of INEC,  the body charged with monitoring party primaries.

As the only eyewitness to the rescheduled APC primary election, who was said to have co-signed a report that no such Congress had taken place, the Tarzoor camp was very upbeat about the potency or decisiveness of the evidence of this witness. Thus, when Andyar stepped into the witness box on August 3, to testify, there was tension in the courtroom.

This witness identified and tendered Exhibit P7, the INEC report and also adopted his statement on oath.

Under cross-examination however, this witness made startling admissions that sent shock waves to the audience.  Responding to a question from Hon, he admitted that said report, Exhibit P7, had nothing to indicate that it emanated from INEC. He further admitted that it was not written on INEC letterhead and that the word ‘INEC’ either in full or in abbreviation could

All Progressives Congress (APC),be found on the report. The worst case scenario arose when he agreed with Hon that the signature on the report was not his own!

All other witnesses called by Tarzoor adduced hearsay, since none of them was an eyewitness to the APC Congress that produced Ortom as the APC flagbearer.

On the part of the defence, the APC called  Baba Dala,  a lawyer, who was the Chairman of the state Congress of the APC,  who gave graphic evidence of how Ortom emerged as the APC flagbearer as a consensus candidate and how this was ratified by over 3,000 of the 4,013 delegates who attended the Congress.

All eyes are, therefore, on the Justice Elizabeth Karatu-led Tribunal as it reconvenes on  September 7,  for the parties to adopt their final written addresses. Thereafter, the Benue people who are very much expectant will know who their real Governor is, when the Tribunal will delivers its judgment.

  • Behold the ‘New Jerusalem’ in Benue

Behold the ‘New Jerusalem’ in Benue

Given the economic reality, especially the rising foreign exchange rate, intending Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem or Rome may look the direction of Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre in Benue State for spiritual edification and enrichment. The 23- year-old religious site is fast emerging as Nigeria’s ‘New Jerusalem’ where thousands of pilgrims converge every August to celebrate the ‘special day of grace’. Assistant Editor (Arts) OZOLUA UHAKHEME ,who was at the centre’s 21st anniversary, reports.

The pain of travelling the seven-kilometre bad road from Ugbokolo in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State to Aokpe community did not deter the huge crowd of pilgrims to Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre.

Thousands of Christians, especially Catholic faithful, from various dioceses in the country and outside Nigeria, converged on the centre for four days (August 1-4) to celebrate the 21st anniversary of Our Lady of Aokpe Mediatrix of All Graces.

Some pilgrims defied the scorching sun and intermittent shower of rain to sit and pray in the open field around the Altar of Perpetual Adoration, Crucifix of Jesus and Good Shepherd Garden.

For the four days, the sleepy and serene Aokpe community was literarily overrun by pilgrims and tourists to the centre. Temporary souvenir and gifts shops dotted the road to the centre as traders displayed foods and gift items, such as rosary, candles, pendants, wall papers, religious cassettes and CDs, among others.

But, to get the centre is like a journey through the Biblical narrow path to heaven. No two big vehicles found it easy to move on the opposite direction  on the rough road. And all vehicles moved on gear one all through the short but  tedious journey. This created a brisk business for operators of commercial motor bikes (Okada) as most pilgrims patronised them, which is a popular and more convenient mode of transport from Ugbokolo to Aokpe. The 15- minute ride on a bike took a vehicle about 30 minutes to cover on a dry day.

To the pilgrims, the bad road is not only a challenge, but it is also part of the penance for the spiritual edification, enrichment and growth – the essence of their pilgrimage. From visitation to apparition room, praying the Rosary, making confessions and penance on penance concrete track leading to the crucifix of Christ, fetching of holy water from the spring fountain, reciting the glorious mysteries, participating in the Hour of Mercy and the Stations of the Cross, there was no dull moment for the pilgrims. It was marathon prayers, praise and worship sessions accompanied by spiritual talks and the three-hourly holy mass during which pilgrims made constant supplications and sacrifices to the Eternal Father for collective and individual needs.

On Monday, August 3, eight masses were conducted for the nation and the state, reconciliation, students, refugees and other internally displaced persons, peace, sponsors of Aokpe project and Holy Spirit. At the grand finale on Tuesday, August 4, the Most Rev Dr. Michael Apochi, Catholic Bishop of Otukpo Diocese, took charge of the mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary that lasted for three hours.

In his exhortation, Rector of the centre, Rev. Fr. Ejembi Vincent, said the spiritual and social challenges of Nigerians are enormous as ‘we are living at a time when immorality is gaining ground, insurgency, Boko Haram, youth unemployment and other economic crisis bedevil us.’

The visionary, Mrs Christiana Agbo Ejeh,   a lawyer, said the Blessed Virgin Mary started appearing to her since 1992, when she was 12, and that Virgin Mary told her she would appear on August 4, 1994 to bestow grace on her children.

“Virgin Mary told me that every August 4 should be set aside to celebrate a special day of grace,” she said.

The story of Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre, which is marking the 21st anniversary of the apparition (special day of grace) is like a prophet who is unknown in his homestead. The centre witnessed its first apparition of the Blessed Mary 23 years ago in October 1992, when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a 12-year old girl, Christiana Inebu Agbo. Although the Aokpe apparition is yet to be  recognised, the Catholic Church has, however, given it some serious considerations through the appointments of Rectors for the Pilgrimage Centre and the involvement of her priests in the devotions taking place there.

The first positive sign that the church’s approval would come one day was the declaration by the Northern Bishops which was read at the centre by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Abuja, now Cardinal John Onaiyekan, at the height of the apparitions in January 1996.

It would be recalled that in July 2013, there was the apparition of Blessed Mary on the wall of St. Benedict Catholic Church at Ubiaja in Edo State. Also, in the same month in 2012, the apparition of Blessed Mary was seen on a tree trunk in New Jersey, USA.

Up till date, Benue State government is yet to fix the seven-kilometre road that leads to the only religious site which attracts tourists and pilgrims yearly. What seems visible in the community is the electricity supply that is epileptic as usual.

Benue State Director of Tourism Mrs. Dooter Ajoko disclosed that the state government has concluded plans to revive the Makurdi Airport and construct the seven-kilometre Ugbokolo-Aokpe road project that was abandoned by past administrations in the state.

She assured that the government was determined to develop tourism as income from oil has continued to dwindle. She said tourism is one of the priority areas the new administration is given attention to generate income alongside agriculture, entrepreneurship development and creating enabling environment for industry to strive.

She said that Aokpe is of particular interest to the state because it has spent much money on pilgrims to abroad. “With Aokpe, government intends to promote it to encourage domestic tourism instead of spending foreign exchange on pilgrimage abroad. Unfortunately, not many people in Benue are aware of the centre at Aokpe. So, government wants to promote and develop the centre,” she said.

According to report, ‘apart from spiritual benefits the presence of Martian site is of immense benefit not only to the locality but the entire nation. It is estimated that once the Catholic Church gives its formal approval and recognition of Aokpe as a Marian site, Nigeria could earn billions of naira from pilgrims who would throng the site from all over the world. In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary Herself had during several of her appearances declared that Aokpe would become great and that She would do great things in Aokpe.’

Benue State Queen of Culture and Tourism 2014/15, Miss Mimi Pine expressed shock at the size and quality of pilgrims and activities at the centre, lamenting that she is getting to know the centre at the close of her tenure as Miss Tourism in the state. But to add some cultural elements and colours to the events, performing troupes from Benue State Ministry of Culture and Tourism were on ground to thrill pilgrims to some scintillating dances.

    Making of Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre

According to reports by the centre, the first acknowledged apparition of the Blessed Mary on African soil took place twenty three years ago at Aokpe, a small village about seven kilometers from Ugbokolo in Okpokwu local government area of Benue State. In October 1992, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a 12-year-old village girl, Christiana Inebu Agbo. The Blessed Mary made consistent appearances which last till September 2004, which the visionary Christiana Agbo described as the last appearance and the last message. Altogether, the Blessed Mary made over a hundred appearances at Aokpe within the twelve year span that the apparitions took place, most of which were privately done between the Blessed Mary and the visionary. Quite a few were public in the sense that dates were fixed ahead of the apparitions and great multitude of people assembled when the apparitions took place and messages relayed to the audience simultaneously.

The main public apparitions were between August 1994 and May 1996. The most prominent was on August 4 1994, declared as special day of grace by the Blessed Mary herself and celebrated since then by devotees of Aokpe.

On the occasion, the then Catholic Bishop of Makurdi Most Rev. Athanasius Usuh who then had Episcopal jurisdiction over the area was requested by the Blessed Mary to either come to Aokpe or send emissaries to witness the apparition scheduled for that date. This, the Bishop did and the emissary Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Ojaje Idoko photographed and video-taped and documented the apparition as well as the miracles that occurred on that occasion which included the receipt of Holy Communion by the visionary from an Angel and the miracle of the sun.

    Landmark features

Despite the various challenges to the actualisation of the dream of becoming a Marina site recognised by the Catholic Church, the centre is witnessing some progress in the area of physical and spiritual development. Already there are the upliftment of the holy spring water discharge point, erection of the Good Shepherd Garden for retreats and altar of Perpetual Adoration built and consecrated on August 4 2010. These were achieved through contributions from devotees as well as the willingness of the local community to receive guests and donate their land for development. Also, the Mediatrix complex which comprises of some guests chalets, a conference hall, and water fountain and garden are among facilities completed and in use.

It is gathered that a business consortium has also submitted proposals for the building of hostels and tourists sites around the centre on a build operate and transfer (BOT) basis.

    Christiana’s encounters with

    Blessed Virgin Mary

“I was in my room praying when suddenly Our Lady appeared to me. When she appeared to me, she said: “I come from Heaven. I am the Refuge of Sinners. I come from Heaven to win souls for Christ and to hide my children in my Immaculate Heart. What I want you to do is pray for the souls in Purgatory, to pray for the world and to pray to console Jesus. Will you accept?” And I answered her, “Yes.”

“In the same month I was in my room and suddenly I saw two Angels singing. I do not know what they were singing. I became afraid and ran out. My brother went and called my mother who said that she could not see anything. The two Angels remained for some minutes, then one of them said, “I am the Angel of Peace.” Then they disappeared.

“The December 1, 1992, I went to the Church to pray. After saying prayers and the Rosary with the people, I left the church and Our Lady suddenly appeared to me and said: “After saying the Rosary sit down and meditate for some time.” She then disappeared.

On October 1, 1993, Christiana saw a round object like a ball on the floor with flowers around it. Our Lady came and stood on it. Prompted by her mother, she was going to ask Our Lady’s name. Our Lady cut in quickly and said, “Behold, I am a Holy Mother and I will introduce myself another time.”

When Christiana said, “I do not know your name,” Our Lady replied: “The time of giving my name has not yet come. The name I will bring will be a powerful one. I will do many things in St. Patrick’s Church said:”

The title which Our Lady eventually gave Christiana is one which evokes much doctrinal and devotional history: Mediatrix of All Graces.

  • Benue political crisis: Waku, Jime reconcile with Ortom

    … after Buhari’s intervention

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, yesterday announced the reconciliation of Senator Joseph Waku and Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Jime with Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

He also stated that Waku and Jime had withdrawn their suit challenging the candidacy of Ortom in the last governorship election.

Addressing journalists at the conference hall of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretariat in Abuja, Dogara said the development followed the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Speaker said the President took the initiative with the objective of healing wounds within the ranks of the party and positioning it to deliver quality service to the people of Benue State.

According to him President Buhari lamented the hardship inflicted on Benue people by the last administration and reiterated the need for the APC government to redress the situation as soon as possible.

He commended the Governor for starting on a sound footing by paying workers’ salaries.

The Speaker directed that the parties involved should embrace one another to demonstrate that they had reconciled, and they did.

In his response, Governor Ortom commended the President for his intervention.

He also commended both Senator Waku and Rt. Hon. Jime for their spirits of sportsmanship and the sacrifice they had made in the interest of the party.

He noted the contributions of his colleagues from Sokoto, Plateau, Imo and Nasarawa states, and the personal presence of three of them. He also thanked the national officials of the party.

Ortom said with the reconciliation, he would perform better in securing the state and providing good governance and leadership.

  • Benue varsity lecturers suspend strike

After four months of industrial action, the local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Benue State University (BSU) in Makurdi, on Monday, called off its strike and asked members to return to work. The lecturers downed tools because former Governor Gabriel Suswam did not pay their salaries.

The strike was called off after a peace meeting held by the ASUU leadership and representatives of the management and the state government. The parties, CAMPUSLIFE learnt, reached a “realistic” agreement after hours of meeting.

The ASUU Chairman, Dr David Ikoni, said lecturers were satisfied with the commitment of Governor Samuel Ortom to the agreement.

“We told our members that we agreed to the terms of the governor and suspended the strike on the governor’s appeal. He gave us his commitment and we felt that we should give him a benefit of the doubt,” Dr Ikoni said.

He said the lecturers would not hesitate to embark on strike again if the governor failed to keep his promise.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Charity Angya, said the governor would do his best to ensure the school is not shut down again. She said: “Gov. Ortom has entered an agreement that is realistic. He had a good discussion with ASUU members and he agreed to the demands of the lecturers.”

The development excited students, some of who expressed happiness. Mary Anyogo, a 300-Level Mass Communication student, said she could not afford to stay at home any longer. “I am so happy when I heard the news. I can’t wait to go back to school,” she said.

Nana Ugoor, a 300-Level Psychology student, said he was no prepared to return to school, because of his financial challenge. He said: “Calling off the strike is good news, because it is what has been expected by students. But, I am not ready financially. I sponsor myself and it is not easy, getting money to return. I will resume in due time.”

The management has advised both staff and students not to waste time in resuming back to work to make up for the lost time.

  • Benue to support Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre

Benue to support Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre

After decades of neglect, Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre is being considered by the Benue State government as a priority tourism project for development, Assistant Editor (Arts) OZOLUA UHAKHEME reports.

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has promised to support the Aokpe Prilgrimage Centre, near Ugbokolo.

He spoke at the 21st anniversary of the centre at the Our Lady of Aokpe Mediatrix of All Ages.

Ortom, who was represented by Director of Tourism, Mrs Dooter Ajoko, reiterated his administration’s commitment to promote  tourism, saying that the government takes pilgrimage seriously and has spent much on sponsoring people on pilgrimage.

He said tourism is a big money spinner which can boost the economic fortunes of a country.

He said indices abound of what countries such as Kenya, Gambia, Bahamas and cities like Calabar benefit from their investment in tourism.

He stressed that time had come for a diversification of the economy from the mono-oil economy to a multi-economy and that tourism is one of the preferred sectors.

“The Aokpe apparition ground has become a prominent religious tourist site/destination that deserves international attention and which I believe the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation would project considering its significance as a pilgrimage centre. The importance of pilgrimage to Christianity and Islamic religion cannot be over-emphaised. If you consider the volume of pilgrims who troop to Mecca, Jerusalem and Rome for pilgrimage viz-a-viz the monetary value on the economy, and you imagine that replicated here in Aopke, not only would the rural economy get a boost but the state and country at large would benefit from the multiplier effects of these,” he said.

Ortom stressed that as soon as the pilgrimage centre is authenticated, some of the pilgrims would come and perform their religious duties at Aopke, noting that government is very willing and ready to provide the necessary enabling environment for the realisation of authentication of Aokpe as a pilgrimage centre.

Director-General, Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs Sally Uwechue Mbanefo, said Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre is one of the many religious sites in Nigeria that needs to be promoted within and outside the country. She noted that NTDC in line with its statutory mandate recognises and identifies Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre as a religious tourism site worthy of recognition and onward publicity on the corporation’s website to attract more foreign pilgrims all over the globe.

“This will form part of religious tourism like the Winners’ Shiloh and Redeemed Church convention which hold every December in Ota and Lagos respectively. In view of the importance of this site to the good people of Benue State, Aokpe community and Nigeria at large, I hereby approve and authenticate Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre as religious tourism site under the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation Act which encourages religious tourism in Nigeria,” she added.

Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism Mr Sekav Dzua Iyortyom recalled that 20 years ago, the story of apparition in Aokpe of mother Mary started and her consistent appearance to Christiana Inebu Agbo.  He noted that there were apparitions in Mexico, France, Portugal, Egypt and Rwanda but that ‘our own joy today is that we are also recognised by nature to see with our own eyes what we used to hear.’

“Today, as Aokpe comes on the Nigerian Tourism map, we should expect that the world would also come here to our door step just as we go to Israel and Mecca for pilgrimage. God in His infinite mercy has provided us what we have been praying for, it is now left for us to sustain it,” he added.

Mrs. Ajoko assured that the government was determined to develop tourism as income from oil has continued to dwindle. She said tourism is one of the priority areas the new administration is given attention to generate income alongside agriculture, entrepreneurship development and creating enabling environment for industry to strive.
