A UK registered group, the board of governors of Leaders Society Nigeria (LSN) has joined Nigerians in greeting the former Interim Chairman of the APC and Governor of Osun State, Chief Abdukareem Adebisi Akande on his 80th birthday.

In a birthday message to the elder statesman by the Chairman Board of Governors of the group, Dr Philip Idaewor said the elder statesman made unquantifiable proven leadership contributions to Nigeria’s political development.

“Words will fail us if we continue to speak of Chief Bisi Akande`s achievements, integrity and amazing intentions for Nigerians and the black race. He is worthy of emulation as a political leader and administrator” he said.

“I prays that God in His infinite mercy will continue to grant the iconic leader long life in good health”.

Commenting on the Colloquium to mark the elder statesman 80th Birthday, Dr Idaewor says “It is a pride for us at Leaders Society Nigeria that Chief Bisi Akande is celebrated as a living legend”.

A Global Affairs Analyst, Ayoola Lawal commended the elder statesman for serving as a beacon of light for Nigerians both at home and in the Diaspora, especially as authentic leadership and integrity are uncommon values in Nigeria and Africa politics.

Lawal further said Chief Akande has consistently demonstrated in his service to the Nigerian state both in government and in the management of political parties.

  • Tinubu hails Akande at 80

All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, says the party might not have recorded quick success without its former Interim Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande.

In a tribute to congratulate Akande as he clocks 80, Tinubu, also the Co-Chair of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council, said Akande was a founding father of the APC and its unprecedented electoral victory in 2015.

A copy of the tribute was made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Lagos by Tinubu’s Media Officer, Mr Tunde Rahman.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Chief Bisi Akande, a nationalist and a former governor of Osun State, will clock 80 on Jan. 16.

Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Media Officer, Tunde Rahman, said that Akande was one of the few surviving true associates of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Bola Ige.

According to him, like Awolowo and Ige, Akande devoted his public life to the ideals and practices that can engender a truly democratic and egalitarian society.

”He is a founding father of the APC and its unprecedented electoral victory in 2015.

”As the interim chairman of the party, he showed extraordinary adeptness and patience in bridging differences and moulding our new party into a progressive force.

”Without him, the APC might never have come into existence and it certainly would not have experienced the quick success it encountered.

”He helped lay a solid foundation for the party and did so selflessly and with impartiality and a good word towards all.

”Baba is a highly perspective and thoughtful leader. He has proved invaluable in serving humanity and his fatherland,” he said.

Tinubu described Akande as a principled leader, who possessed profound judgment and a sage’s wisdom as well as a compassionate human being and an example of decorum in any circumstance.

”This high principled leader, Bisi Akande, stood as a father figure and mentor to many younger politicians across the country, particularly in the South-West.

”Because of his traits as an exemplary leader and mentor, many call him “Baba Omo Keekeke”, meaning the political father of the younger ones who come after him.

”He has shown that one can be successful in politics by being kind to all and making concern for the common person and for a just society one’s guiding vision.

”He is one of the most humane persons you could meet. To meet him is to like him. To know him is to admire Chief Akande and to be thankful that he is your friend and ally,” he said.

Tinubu said that Akande gave his best and served his Ila-Orangun hometown, his state, the Yoruba race and the country with commitment and dedication.

”He was a stalwart progressive regarding his objections, and proved to have an expert and diligent hand in terms of his administration of the machinery of governance.

”He was unwavering in pursuing what he believed was good and desirable for the state.

”He governed with a dignity that is rarely found. Yet, he would not flinch from doing what was right even if strong force was arrayed against him,” he said.

Leaders of the All Progressives  Congress (APC) in the south west on Tuesday met with the 33 aspirants contesting the Ekiti governorship primary to address issues that led to the disruption of the primary, saying they have arrived at a decision that will be in the overall interest of the party and the nation.

The meeting called at the instance of the National Leader of the party was attended by majority of the aspirants as well as leaders of the party in the South-West; with Chief Bisi Akande saying that the resolution of the meeting will be conveyed to the leadership of the party on Wednesday.

Leaders of the party in the South West who attend does the meeting include pioneer national chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, former Ogun state Governor, Chief Segun Osoba, former Ekiti state governor Otumba Niyi Adebayo and the Zonal Vice Chairman Chief Pius Akinyelure.

Although The Nation learnt that the Minister wanted to leave the venue of the meeting before the break, it was not clear whether he left in anger as he did not display any emotion while leaving, refusing however to speak to the Press.

Former Deputy National Chairman of the party and one of the aspirants, Engr. Segun Oni dismissed claims that one of the aspirants walked out, saying “nobody walked out of the meeting. We are on break and will reconvene”.

He also dismissed the option of going for a consensus, saying ” we are not considering that. We are going for election “, a position which was echoed by Senator Ayo Arise.

Chairman of the Primary Election Committee and Nasarawa state governor, Tanko AlMakura however arrived the venue of the meeting at about 7.05 and went into a meeting with the leaders from.the south west who were already meeting.

The meeting with the aspirants resumed at about 7.30 with AlMakura and members of the primary committee in attendance, but without the Minister of Solid Mineral and Senator Ayo Arise in attendance.

He said they will convey the decision they arrived at at the end of the meeting to the leadership of the party, saying “we will convey our resolution to the party and the party will be able to tell you.

“We took a decision on what will be the best advantage to our party and the country. Consensus is already written in our constitution and it is an option. Also primary election is already in our constitution. But what we want is the general happiness of the leaders of the party, the contestants and our party.”

On whether the aspirants agreed to step down for one of them, he said “that option is given to them, but it require them going back, think about it and inform us.

On fresh primary, he said “we are going to talk to the party about what the aspirants have said and what we all thought was best and we know that the party will take the right decision.

“The party choose the old date, choose the modalities and the method of doing it and when it was aborted, the party it cancelled it. Who am I to say I  disagree with that. I was not part of that process. I am now going to be part of the new process so that we don’t have the kind of problems we had.”

APC must not die, says Bisi Akande

    • Why Tinubu must agree to serve party

The pioneer Interim National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Adebisi Akande, yesterday made a passionate appeal to members of the party  to join  hands  with President Muhammadu Buhari, Asiwaju  Bola Tinubu  and himself  to make the party “stronger and more attractive for other generations’  to use as a vehicle for political emancipation.”

Akande in a statement said the job at hand is not about Buhari or position sharing or ethnic nationalism, but about the APC.

He spoke against the background of the efforts to reconcile warring groups in the party and apparent moves by some members to dump the party.

President Buhari, early in the month, mandated Tinubu to resolve the crises in some state chapters of the party.

Akande in his statement said:  “To avoid the journey to the undertakers, we are all agreed that prevention is often a wise counsel; More so for the APC. A party born out of necessity at a time Nigeria needed a life boat; a new lease of life.

“For the purpose it was birthed it succeeded in unseating an incumbent government. And for a higher purpose it is working hard to succeed at good governance.

“Nobody watches the child he birthed to die just like that. The responsibility to save the child comes suddenly upon the father. The APC cannot be allowed to wither away because of omissions and commissions

“Times like this call for sacrifice and service. Of note is the saying that a real man, a hero is known by where he stands in the time of adversity. Bola Tinubu, myself and President Buhari stand together in this effort to save APC from itself.

“Serving the nation has complex colours which constantly dazzle distant onlookers. The job at hand is not about Buhari. It is not about position sharing. It is not about ethnic nationalism. It is about the strength and the beauty of one’s deeds at one time or the other. It is about our party – the APC – Buhari or no Buhari.

“Tinubu was a major participant in the emergence of APC! He must never be happy seeing it destroyed.

“Let APC be – no matter who may be lucky using it to gain power, make money, get famous – be such lucky ones born by Yoruba, Ibo or Hausa-Fulani. For as long as APC remains relevant, so long shall Bola Tinubu’s contributions to nation-building be magnified in Nigerian history.

“Guess. Those that are problematic or now crossing away from APC were not part of its initial making. They must have joined after wreaking their old parties and after the merger became recognised and approved by INEC with a view to merely using APC as a platform for positions.

“Let’s all join with Buhari and Bola Tinubu side by side to make APC stronger and more attractive for other generations’ to use as a vehicle for political emancipation.”

We will respond to Obasanjo’s Coalition Movement at the right time – Tinubu

….Obasanjo playing politics with letter to Buhari

National leader of the All Progressives Congress ( APC )  and former governor of Lagos State,  Bola Tinubu, yesterday said that the party will respond to the Coalition Movement launched by former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the “appropriate time “.

He accused Obasanjo of playing politics with his open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, where he accused him of (Buhari) of non performance.

Tinubu who made a stop over in Owerri, the Imo State capital on his way to Anambra State for the burial ceremony of late former Vice President in the company of another APC leader, Chief Bisi Akande, insisted that Obasanjo could have exploited other better ways of communicating his observations about the Buhari’s administration other than open letter if not politically motivated.

According to the APC leader, who jocularly said that the letter was not written to him, “Obasanjo wrote it about the government. It is a very good awareness on his part and they are both from the same background. I believe that is the doctrine  of Military Officers (retired) because he has unrestricted access to the President, either through the Council of State or by any other means that he need to see the current President privately and he was his junior in the Army.  So I think Obasanjo was playing politics with his public letter that’s all I see. He could have used other means,  he met him in the AU too he has a way of discussing privately but the letter is being responded to by the government”.

Also responding to the former launching of Obasanjo’s Coalition Movement, in the brief interview with journalists at the Imo State Government House,  Tinubu,  said that it is still too early to respond to the development,

He said, “the appropriate time is not now for response on the Coalition Movement but we are in a democracy, we are in a country that is a signatory to the Charter of the United Nation which guarantees free movement, free association and free speech”.

On the reason for his visit, he stated that, “the governor is a very good friend and the government that is here is our government, the APC government. We are here to pay final  respect to the gentleman and Nationalist, Alex  Ekwueme”.

Money politics killing our political system – Akande

A former Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, said on Friday the development of Nigeria’s political system is being curtailed by monetisation of politics.

Akande, stated this in a remark at the meeting of Osun APC Elders’ Forum also known as “Agba Osun” in his Ila country home.

According to the former Osun State governor, monetisation of politics should be urgently curtailed because the practice has eroded the core values of politics in the country.

He also urged the APC leadership to continue to uphold the politics of service to the people.

“No matter the pressure being promoted by the general outlook of corruption that forms the foundation of the problems in the country, we must not deviate from service to the people.

“Nigerian politicians are sitting on a time bomb with the practice and growth of monetisation of politics.

“If this is not curtailed urgently, it will soon kill Nigerian politicians and our political system,” he said.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the APC elders also frowned at what they described as politics of stomach infrastructure being imported to the South West states.

The communiqué was signed by the Chairman of the forum, Mr. Sola Akinwunmi.

It said: “This type of politics is alien to us and is already eroding the core value of progressive politics to almost non-existence.

“This should be discouraged as it portends serious danger to our democracy.”

According to the communique, the APC will win the July 8 by-election in the state.

The forum also called on every elected and appointed political office holders to make sure that they deliver their various constituencies in the election.

Buhari greets Bisi Akande at 78

  • Akande offers tips out of APC crisis

Akande offers tips out of APC crisis

Former Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande has offered some tips on how the ruling party can surmount its internal crisis.

In a statement, Chief Akande blamed the crisis on those he called, some Northern elite, drug barons, anti-democratic forces and other elements who are afraid of President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti- corruption posture.

He said the party must reposition for it to offer Nigerians the change it promised.

The statement reads: “Some times in 2013, the Action Congress OF Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) resolved to merge and set up a merger committee to work out the modality for glueing together as one political party under one name, one constitution and one manifesto.

“A splinter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) sought to be included in the merger.  An application made to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to this end by All Progressives Congress (APC) National Interim Committee, composed of ACN, ANPP, CPC, and factions of APGA and Democratic People’s Party (DPP) was approved in July, 2013.

“Between Bola Ahmed Tinubu (an ACN leader) and Kashim Imam (a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader), the idea came up and was adopted  that the new party should embark on a membership recruitment drive to certain PDP governors, whose main agenda was to see President Goodluck Jonathan out of power.

“The recruitment efforts took APC leaders to Rivers, Kwara, Niger, Sokoto, Kano, Jigawa and Adamawa states. Eventually, five PDP governors of Sokoto, Kano, Adamawa, Kwara and Rivers, together with the majority of their PDP National and State Assemblies members and other PDP National Assembly members from Gombe, Bauchi and Nasarawa, under the banner of the new-PDP, joined the APC.

“The APC thereafter organised membership registrations in all the over 120,000 polling units and followed up by using these registered members to conduct congresses in all the almost 8000 wards, in over 770 local governments, in all the 36 states (including Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a convention at the National level, thereby creating one united APC party structure all over Nigeria.

“With this air of oneness, APC went ahead to conduct primaries to select candidates for state governors and Houses of Assembly and for the presidency and the National Assemblies.

“After the elections, which saw the APC to victory all round, a meeting was reported to have been held by certain old and new-PDP leaders in Alhaji Kawu Baraje’s house at Abuja to review what should be their share in this new Buhari’s government and resolved to seek collaboration with the PDP with a view to hi-jacking the National Assembly and, having got rid of Goodluck Jonathan, with an ultimate aim of resuscitating the PDP as their future political platform.

“Unknown to most APC members, while Senator Bukola Saraki was being adopted as the candidate for Senate President by certain old and new-PDP tendencies, the theory was being propagated that, like in most presidential democracies, the APC minority leaders in the old National Assembly (i.e. George Akume for the Senate and Femi Gbajabiamila for the House of Representatives) should automatically become Senate President and Speaker respectively, now that APC has the majority.

“Certain leaders felt that most past Senate presidents had come from Benue State, which Akume represented and that Benue State should be made to assume the traditional home of all senate presidents.

“At the same time certain, senators were clamouring for one of the most ranking senators anywhere outside the Northwest zone that produced the President. That was how Ahmed Lawan, who has been in the House of Representatives for eight years and in the senate for another eight years emerged as the candidate for the senate president.

“Democrats among the APC leadership insisted on selection by mock elections, rather than tribal or sectional considerations. As a result of primary elections, Ahmed Lawan and George Akume emerged as APC candidate for Senate President and Deputy respectively while Femi Gbajabiamila and Mohammed Monguno emerged as the Speaker and Deputy for the House of Representatives.

“Numerous among those calling themselves businessmen  in Nigeria are like leaches, sucking from the nation’s blood largely through various governments and particularly through the Nigerian Federal Government. While all these schisms were going on in the APC, those who were jittery of Buhari’s constant threat of anti-corruption’s battle began to encourage and finance rebellions against the APC democratic positions which led to the emergence of Senator Saraki as the candidate of the PDP tendencies inside and outside APC.

“Before the party knew it, the process had been hijacked by polluted interests who saw the inordinate contests as a loop-hole for stifling APC governments’ efforts in its desire to fight corruption.

“Most Northern elite, the Nigerian oil subsidy barons and other business cartels, who never liked Buhari’s anti-corruption political stance, are quickly backing-up the rebellion against APC with strong support. While other position seekers are waiting in the wings until Buhari’s ministers are announced, a large section of the Southwest see the rebellion as a conspiracy of the North against the Yoruba.

“What began as political patronages to be shared into APC membership-spreads among ethnic zones, religious faiths and political rankings and experiences have now become so complicated that the sharing has to be done by and among PDP leadership together with cohorts of former new-PDP affiliations in the APC, by and among gangs of past anti-Buhari’s Presidency, and certain APC legislators and party members who dance round the crisis arena to pick some crumbs.

“Now that the whole conspiracy has blown open, it is doubtful if the present institutions of party leadership can muster the required capacity to arrest the drift. It is my opinion that President Buhari, and the APC governors should now see APC as a recking platform that may not be strong enough again to carry them to political victory in 2019 and they should quickly begin a joint damage control effort to reconstruct the party in its claim to bring about the promised change before the party’s shortcomings begin to aggravate the challenges of governance in their hands.”
