Nigeria drifting towards tyranny under Jonathan, says Bisi Akande

Former Osun State Governor Chief Bisi Akande warned yesterday that the nation was drifting towards despotism and lawlessness under President Goodluck Jonathan’s watch.

Akande, who was the Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), urged Nigerians to resist the spate of impunity and power tyranny under the Federal Government.

Akande spoke yesterday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, in his remarks as chairman at the inaugural lecture of the Dauda Adegbenro Foundation Memorial Lecture, in honour of the late former Premier of the Western Region, Chief Dauda Adegbenro.

The APC chieftain noted that Jonathan had been fanning the embers of division along religious and ethnic lines through propaganda.

He accused the President of persecuting the Yoruba and using impunity to impose leaders on the Southwest.

Akande said: “We are back in a similar era of using the regime of impunity in Jonathan’s Federal Government to impose unwanted individuals as leaders in each of the states in Yoruba land.”

In his speech, titled: Adegbenro Fought Against Regimes of Impunity, the former governor traced the origin of imposition of leaders on states by federal authorities to the political crisis that swept through the Western Region in the 1960s.

Akande described Jonathan as an ingrate who marginalised the Yoruba race during the National Conference, even when the Yoruba spearheaded the struggle that led to his emergence as President under the “doctrine of necessity” at a time reactionary forces were against him.

He said: “Apart from marginalising the Yoruba in all constitutional appointments of his government, Jonathan’s trait has always been to persecute the Yoruba leaders who he perceived to have contrary views to his own.

“Jonathan’s first and most significant act of ingratitude to the Yoruba was when he maliciously arrested and prosecuted unjustifiably Dimeji Bankole and Senator Bola Tinubu.

“No government has ever disrespected the Yoruba as the Jonathan administration. But it is yet morning because a few of us with our followers are resolved to continue the struggle for a just and democratic Nigeria; more importantly, for a Yoruba nation that can stand up against discrimination, nepotism and power tyranny.

“His other acts of ingratitude include divisive propaganda to cause disaffection among various ethnic nationalities and religious divides with a view to undermine the security of Nigeria.”

The statesman also accused the President of working against the formation of APC, by making its registration difficult.

He added that the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) going into alliance with other parties to form a stronger opposition, the APC, neither meant abandoning the Southwest nor looking for undue favours from the North, as the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) were not ruling at the centre.

He said: “No one can accuse the ACN leaders of cringing or for undue clinging to northern leaders for selfish material gains by securing the merger of opposition in Nigeria because federal power was not in the hands of the northern leaders of ANPP and CPC when the merger op opposition parties was enacted.

“APC, in good faith, merely acted in keeping with non-discrimination  against public demand that all opposition parties, including the parties in the Southeast, Southsouth and those of the North generally, should merge to confront PDP in power at any democratic election.”

Nigeria drifting towards tyranny under Jonathan – Akande

Former governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande, on Wednesday warned that the nation is drifting speedily towards despotism and lawlessness under the watch of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Akande, who was the former Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), urged Nigerians to rise up and resist the spate of impunity and power tyranny manifesting in the country.

He spoke in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while making his remarks as Chairman at the inaugural lecture of Dauda Adegbenro Foundation.

The lecture was held in honour of late former premier of the Western Region, Chief Dauda Adegbenro.

Akande, who noted that Jonathan has been fanning the embers of division along religious and ethnic lines in the country via propaganda, also accused the President of persecuting the Yorubas as well as using impunity to impose leaders on Southwest states of Nigeria.

He said: “we are back to the similar era of impunity in Jonathan’s federal government. The government imposes unwanted individuals as leaders in each of the states of Yoruba land.”

“Apart from marginalising the Yorubas in all appointments of his government, Jonathan’s trait has always been to persecute the Yoruba leaders who he perceived to have contrary views to his own.

“Jonathan’s first and most significant act of ingratitude to the Yorubas was when he maliciously arrested and prosecuted unjustifiably Dimeji Bankole and Senator Bola Tinubu.

“No government has ever disrespected the Yoruba like the Jonathan’s administration. But it is yet over because few of us with our followers have resolved to continue the struggle for a just and democratic Nigeria. More importantly, though for a Yoruba nation that can stand up against discrimination, nepotism and power tyranny.

“His other acts of ingratitude include divisive propaganda to cause disaffection among various ethnic nationalities and religious divides with a view to undermine the security of Nigeria.”

Akande also accused the President of working against the formation of APC, saying he made the party registration a difficult task.

    Akande frowns at militarisation

FORMER Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, has condemned the militarisation of Osun State ahead of the August 9 governorship poll.

He spoke last Friday at a reception organised for him by the Ila-Ifedayo Boluwaduro Federal Constituency.

While alleging that heavy deployment of security operatives to the State was to intimidate and scare supporters of the APC, Akande added: “In the last governorship election in Ekiti State, hundreds of APC supporters and leaders were hounded into detention on the eve of the election, only for the federal government to hoodwink the global community to believe that the election was free and fair when in truth the process had been skewed in favour of the PDP in the pre- election processes.

“The same scenario is playing out again in Osun with the militarisation of the state by men of the SSS who are shooting sporadically everywhere in order to scare away voters and intimidate our people before the election.”

Akande said the military has no business in civil activities like election and the electorate, lamenting that the set back of Nigeria was as a result of the misrule of the military regime.

According to the APC leader, the PDP and the presidency have begun moves to destroy opposition parties in a desperate bid to hold onto power.

The former governor of Osun state added: “History does not change; it is the people who fail to learn the lessons of history.

“It was this type of actions by the then ruling parties that led to the collapse of the First and Second Republics of Nigeria due to the reckless use of brutal force by the ruling parties against the opposition.

“The present ruling PDP is already toeing this line at the risk of our hard-earned democracy for which some of our compatriots paid the supreme sacrifice.

“With PDP in power, votes do not count and, therefore, the electorate is not important in PDP’s culture.

“That is why Nigeria has been sinking and failing under PDP governments.  the current regime is the worst. Surely, this Jonathan’s presidency is a political armed robber.”

Reiterating his opposition to the PDP-led government, Akande said: “This present regime is the worst in the history of Nigeria. No peace, no infrastructure, no electricity, no employment, no industry, no prosperity, no orderliness and no peace of mind. Instead, there is panic everywhere.”

During the visit, they met for more than one hour. The Gen. last week survived a bomb attack suspected to have been targeted at him around Kawo market in Kaduna.

The visit is not unconnected with the attempt on the life of the General.

Neither Gen. Buhari nor his visitors spoke to reporters after the visit. The host simply said: “I have issued a statement before and I cannot say anything contrary to that.”

Adeleke defects to APC in colourful ceremony

First civilian governor of Osun State and former Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) in the Senate, Isiaka Adeleke, yesterday defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) with thousands of his supporters.

Adeleke, a former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was received with his supporters by the APC leaders, including the party’s national chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, as well as Governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti).

The colourful ceremony was held at the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park.

Addressing the huge crowd, Akande congratulated Aregbesola for Adeleke and his supporters’ decision to come into the APC.

He noted that Adeleke’s father was a renowned progressive politician with immense contributions, adding that he was glad to join other APC leaders to receive the former governor into the party.

Among the defectors that followed Adeleke into the APC were Mufutau Ayinde, Kamoru Adegoke, Kamoru Ajisafe, Bashir Salam and others.

All of them said they resolved to leave the PDP because of the violent nature of many of its chieftains and join the APC because of its progressive nature.

They also cited the performances of Governor Aregbesola as another decider for them.

Adeleke and his supporters were formally received and given the APC flags in place of that of the PDP, which was burnt.

The former governor narrated how he was violently attacked by the PDP governorship candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore; Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Jelili Adesiyan, and others at a public function.

Adeleke, who said he did not have any problem with the PDP, maintained he left the party because he found it difficult to work with the criminals whom he said dominated the PDP in Osun State.

He said: “I can never work with criminal and violent people. My advice for the people of Osun State is that they should not vote for the criminals. They cannot do better than Aregbesola.”

Acknowledging Aregbesola’s performance, he assured him of his support for the second term.

Aregbesola berated the PDP for misrule, saying the people of Ede are progressive and cannot work with “those who have got nothing to offer them.”

He recalled the late sage Obafemi Awolowo’s prophecy that “the good people would be separated from the bad” and noted that Adeleke’s defection has made the prophecy very relevant.

Some of those in attendance at the event included the interim national legal adviser, Dr. Muiz Banire; the APC acting chairman in Osun State, Elder Adebiyi Adelowo; the governor’s wife, Sherifat; members of the National Assembly and the state House of Assembly and others.

    Fulani honour Akande

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande has been made the Babasale (Grand Patron) of the Fulani in the Southwest.

The title was bestowed on him by the leadership of the apex Fulani organisation in the region, the Jamat Flube.

The Fulani leaders, led by Sheik Toyin Sulaiman, broke the news during a visit to Akande at his Ila-Orangun country home in Osun State.

They said the honour was in recognition of Akande’s contributions to development in the Southwest and Nigeria in general.

They urged him to facilitate the integration of the Fulani into the socio-political system of the Southwest.

The Fulani leaders requested Akande’s assistance in the registration of the association; facilitation of a meeting with the governor and his intervention in the establishment of Karaal (cattle) markets across the state and establishment of a secretariat in Osogbo, the state capital.

Akande expressed happiness that the Fulani in the Southwest deemed it fit to be integrated into the Yoruba societal system and operate under a registered umbrella.

Urging them to ensure that the organisation is registered, he said this would aid communication with the government.

Akande urged them to join the APC and ensure its victory in the August 9 governorship election in Osun and the 2015 general elections.

    Foundation chief supports Aregbesola’s campaign

The Secretary of the Oranmiyan Foundation, Republic of Ireland chapter, Dr. Gbenga Salawu, has donated public address systems to all wards in Iwo, Ayedire and Ola-Oluwa Federal Constituency of Osun State to support Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s re-election campaign.

He also gave N50,000 to each of the local government areas in the constituency for mobilisation to meetings.

Handing over the items to the chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 10 wards in Ayedire Local Government, Ayedire urged them to put his donation to good use.

The dentist turned politician said the Oranmiyan Foundation was determined to sustain the peace, economic growth and social rebirth in the state.

He said alleged rigging by the PDP, “which ousted former Governor Bisi Akande from power in 2003, must not be allowed this time”.

Salawu, who described Aregbesola as “God sent”, urged the people to see their voter cards as the key to their future and the future of unborn generations.

He said the alleged threat of violence by the PDP should not discourage the people from defending their tomorrow, adding: “The same force of logic deployed to reclaim the party’s stolen mandate in the 2007 election would be used to return the governor for another four-year term of responsible and responsive governance.

“We were in this country when free education, free health, food abundance and accountability were the hallmarks of governance and we were here when things began to deteriorate, especially when the military took over power. “The return to democracy in 1999 has not really shown any difference, particularly at the federal level, because the marauders in the garb of the PDP have continued to lord it over us.”

The APC Chairman in the council, Prince Adesoye Adedapo, hailed Salawu for the gesture, urging party members to eschew violence, no matter the level of provocation from the opposition.

    Akande hails Ajimobi’s wife

All Progressives Congress (APC) Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande has hailed efforts by the Access to Basic medical Care (ABC) Foundation, an initiative of the Oyo State governor’s wife, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, to give free health care services to the people.

Akande spoke while inspecting facilities at the ABC HUB, headquarters of the foundation, on Ring Road in Ibadan.

He described the foundation as “a good initiative that will improve public health with its intervention activities”.

Akande urged well meaning Nigerians to partner the foundation.

Mrs. Ajimobi, who took Akande and her husband, Governor Abiola Ajimobi, round the headquarters, said support for the foundation can come in form of drugs and equipment, not necessarily financial.

She said the ABC is a non-profit outfit and has no affiliation with the government, adding: “At ABC, health is important to us. It is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation. We give free quality health care services and we have a lot of patients who need medical intervention.

“We welcome any form of support, which does not necessarily have to be financial. It could be materials, such as drugs or medical equipment like gloves.”
