Troops intercept Boko Haram suicide bomb squad, neutralise five

Troops intercepted Boko Haram suicide bomb squad at the weekend and neutralised five terrorists at different locations in Borno north, Nigerian Army said yesterday.

Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, the army spokesman in a statement, noted that the intercepted bomb at Ngalle village where one terrorist was neutralised “could have been intended for troops or innocent and peace loving villagers.”

Usman said a huge Improvised Explosive Device (IED) cylinder was recovered from the terrorists.

“Other items recovered include an AK-47 rifle magazine, a motorcycle and some spare parts.”

He also said that troops intercepted escaping Boko Haram terrorists crossing Maiduguri-Monguno highway at Torowa village during which another terrorist was shot dead, while others fled into the nearby bush.

“The gallant troops recovered an AK-47 riffle with a magazine loaded with19 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, three mobile phones, a SIM card and jewelleries,” he added.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the army spokesman said troops have flushed out terrorists, who were taking refuge in the surroundings of Dure in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno.

He said the troops engaged and smoked them out of their hideouts at Jango, Nduma, Gobara, Bala Ibrahim, Fulani Rogo and Takwala villages and environs in the Gwoza Local Government Area.

“During the operations, the troops neutralised three Boko Haram terrorists and captured one other terrorist alive,” he said, adding that others escaped with gunshot wounds.

“The troops also recovered one Fabrique Nationals (FN) rifle, one G3 rifle, charged magazines and a pair of military camouflage uniform suspected to be used by the terrorists to disguise as military personnel.

“Unfortunately, one soldier sustained injury during the operation. He has since been evacuated to the unit’s Regimental Aid Post, for more medical attention.

“The captured terrorist has been taken into custody for further interrogation and onward passage to relevant agencies,” he said.

  • Army, Air Force renew offensive against Boko Haram

The Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have renewed their attacks against the Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeast, destroying their structures and killing scores of them in various military operations aimed at decimating the ability of the group.
According to a statement from the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. General Sani Usman, troops of 112 Task Force Battallion and Mobile Strike Team were able to locate the hideouts of the insurgents in parts of Borno state and launched attacks on them, recovering weapons and vehicles from the insurgents.
Similarly in a seperate statement, The Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya said the NAF has continued its air strikes against Boko Haram to ensure the group is cleared from the Northeast as soon as possible.
Gen Sani Usman said : “Troops of 112 Task Force Battalion and Mobile Strike Teams of 22 Brigade of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in collaboration with some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) have on Friday, 27th October 2017, based on credible information from well meaning Nigerians, carried out clearance operations in Gawa, Bone, Kajeri 1, Kajeri 2, Kube, Dubula, Boboshe 1 and Boboshe 2 villages, Borno State.
“During the operation, the gallant troops discovered that the terrorists had make shift night market in Boboshe with newly harvested farm produce on display for sale.
“After conducting a thorough search of the vicinity, they recovered 3 Isuzu vehicles, 4 Dane guns, 1 Dummy gun, suspected to be used for training of inducted Boko Haram terroists and mattresses hidden under shrubs, amongst several other items ahead of Bone village.
” They also rescued 5 persons taken captives by the criminal Boko Haram terrorists gang at Boboshe 1 and Dubula.
“The troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE are more determined and resolute to ensure that the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists are located and neutralised.
“Accordingly, the general public is please requested to continue to volunteer credible information to security agencies in the ongoing clearance operations in the North East.
On his part Air Commodore Adesanya said : “The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified its intensive day and night aerial bombardments of Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) locations within the Northeast.
“On 26 October 2017, the fourth day of the ongoing Operation RUWAN WUTA II, the NAF conducted air interdiction on some structures in DURE, a BHT-infested location, 12km east of SAMBISA. Reports from NAF Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance platforms had revealed the gradual resurgence of BHT activities in the settlement, particularly at the targeted structures, which were hideouts for the terrorists.
“Five aircraft namely 3 x Alpha Jet aircraft and 2 x F-7Ni aircraft conducted the air interdiction missions. The Alpha Jet aircraft and the F-Ni aircraft took turns to attack the location with bombs, destroying the targeted structures and killing the terrorists.
“The Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) conducted after the strikes revealed that some of the structures were set ablaze by the bomb explosions.
“On the same day, the NAF conducted air interdiction missions on a BHT-infested settlement in MANGUSUM.
“The location was attacked, in succession, by 2 F-7Ni aircraft and 3 x Alpha Jet aircraft. The F-7Ni aircraft and some of the Alpha Jet aircraft attacked the targets with bombs, destroying BHT structures in the location and sending a few BHT survivors fleeing.
“Thereafter, another Alpha Jet aircraft followed up with rocket and cannon attacks in the target area, strafing the fleeing terrorists in the process. Subsequent BDA of the attack indicated some burnt structures and significant casualties inflicted on the BHTs.
“Operation RUWAN WUTA II, which was initiated by the NAF leadership, as a follow-up to the hugely successful Operation RUWAN WUTA, has so far proved to be even more successful”.

  • 2019: Group raises alarm over plans by politicians to plant Boko Haram Hoax

A civil society organisation, under the aegis of National Forum of Democrats has alleged that some politicians in Borno State are planning to create tension ahead of the 2019 general elections through Boko Haram insurgency hoax.

The group said the political elements have concluded plans to use the Boko Haram insurgents to achieve their aim by planting stories in the media and sponsoring Boko Haram attacks in the north-east.

Addressing newsmen on Saturday in Kaduna, the national leader of NDF, Alhaji Gambo Dambata, said that certain forces benefiting from the old order were trying to draw back the hands of the clock to return to the era of doom and gloom in the nation.
Dambata alleged that the calculation of such persons is to sponsor publications in both print and electronic media that Boko Haram is occupying certain territories in Nigeria and in collaboration with some international organization so as to generate a security report that would make INEC to shelve holding the 2019 polls in these localities.

He said, “Borno State as you all know has been at the receiving end of the Boko Haram scourge since the group turned violent in 2009.

“Prior to this, Borno has been one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria with a metropolitan state capital, Maiduguri, that was home to all and sundry irrespective of religious or ethnic background.

“It’s major towns like Bama, Monguno, Gwoza and Biu stood out as major markets and centers of commerce for both the indigenes and other entrepreneurs.

“The result was that sanity returned to Borno State and the normal life craved for by all began to take shape.
Schools began to open, markets received a boom and governance was instilled.

“You may have noticed reports in some quarters about occupation of some territories in Borno State allegedly by Boko Haram.
This subtle campaign which appears to draw sympathy to the local population in the said territories is nothing but an orchestrated narrative to set in a sinister agenda for the manipulation of the forthcoming general elections and to hoodwink multilateral agencies and other humanitarian organisation into donating funds for diversion and use by these elements.”

“The calculation of such persons is to sponsor publications in both print and electronic media that Boko Haram is occupying certain territories in Nigeria and in collaboration with some international organization so as to generate a security report that would make INEC to shelve holding the 2019 polls in this locality and thereafter hold same in IDP camps where they are able to carryout their rigging plans.

“But we ask how possible it is for the insurgents to keep any territories in the current circumstances where the insurgents have been terribly weakened and downgraded that they have resorted to bombing soft targets?

“Such people forget that Nigerians are not so gullible and that people are aware that since the President ordered the sevice chiefs to relocate to the Notth-east, the military has not lost ground on any territory but has consolidated its grip in holding forte recovered territories to the jubilation of the populace.

“This group has taken a tour of the North-east and can confirm authoritatively that the 13 LGAs once held by Boko Haram in 2015 have all been liberated.

“We can also confirm that serious-minded humanitarian organizations are on ground giving help while economic activities have returned to its old order and life booming for the people again.

“One is therefore at a loss why these political losers think they can hatch a new plot to play on the sensibility of well meaning Nigerians and try to diminish the success of the war against insurgency by the Muhammadu Buhari led Administration.

“We urge Borno Politicians to forget about holding elections in IDP camps as there is a deliberate plot by some selfish politicians to sponsor attacks across the north-east in the name of Boko Haram just to cause panic, apprehension and pandemonium in the state as to give room for Elections to hold in IDP camps where they can easily manipulate the results in favour of their preferred candidates.

  • That UN Boko Haram Hoax

I know the United Nations Organization (UN) as a serious-minded umbrella body and assemblage of nations of the world in the pursuit of common good for humanity across the globe. It has been visible, especially in times of armed conflicts of global dimension affecting member-states. And anywhere the UN berths its shadows, it is accorded veneration and its standpoint held sacrosanct.

But I was bewildered when a report credited to an arm of the UN with the caption, “UN counters Nigerian govt, says three Borno LGAs cut off by Boko Haram,’ published mainly by online media, failed to meet the minimum basics of an official reportage or assessment from such an august body. Infuriatingly, while it lacked substance conspicuously, it summed up on the security situation in the Northeast, with a damning verdict on the Nigerian Government and implicatively, efforts of the military on the counter-insurgency operations in the country.

The publications were lifted from the United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aids’s (UNOCHA) monthly report for September 2017, titled, “North-East Nigeria: Humanitarian Situation Update.”

A report purportedly issued by (UNOCHA) claimed Boko Haram insurgents still retain threatening presence and in control of three Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria and by inference, the Northeast. Strikingly, the claims by UNOCHA came shortly after the military command in Nigeria’s Northeast proclaimed that no part of Borno state was under the captivity or control of the extremist sect, Boko Haram insurgents. The UNOCHA set out to counter this claim, but postured badly.

There is no need to run hasty conclusions on the falsehood or veracity of the patently offensive report attributed to UNOCHA. A dissection of it would reveal the snags and otherwise, thus, test the grounds of the claims by this world body.

Nigerians and the world at large are fully aware of the near untamable rage and tempo of Boko Haram Terrorism (BHT) particularly in the Northeast before May 2015, when Nigerians opted for change of leadership by massively voting President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB).

A report by Sunday Trust newspaper edition of January 4th , 2015, published 41 days to the commencement of the first batch of the 2015 general elections comes handy. It divulged that despite the campaign-induced efforts to recapture swathes of territories annexed by insurgents, Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) were still in control of at least 13 LGAs in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states in Nigeria’s Northeast. The insurgents are also declared these LGAs their sovereign “Islamic Caliphate.”

The report also indicated that nine out of the estimated 13 LGAs under the jurisdiction of terrorists were from Borno state alone. It also intimated that the extent of insurgents Islamisation of the captured territories reached a crescendo when Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, audaciously declared Gwoza, a town in southern Borno as headquarters of this “Islamic Caliphate.”

The report identified insurgents annexed LGAs in Borno State as “Gwoza, Bama, Mafa, Dikwa, Kala-Balge, Ngala, Marte, Abadam and Mobbar. The other four are Michika and Madagali in Adamawa State, as well as Gujba and Gulani in Yobe State.”

Furthermore, the report also specified insurgents partial control of other LGAs in Borno, such as “ Mungono, Kukawa, Guzamala, Gubio, Magumeri, Damboa, konduga, Chibok, Askira Uba and Jere.” No doubt, with attention of government at that time focused on the general elections, insurgents gained more stronghold on these local governments, intensified their atrocities and freely donated pains and sorrows to victims.

This was the extent of the precarious insecurity situation President Buhari met on assumption of office and proceeded to reshuffle the military top hierarchy. He appointed the very gallant Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai , as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and leader of the counter-insurgency campaigns, with a specific instruction to defeat terrorism in Nigeria within the shortest time. And since the Northeast proved indisputably as the hub of BHT, Gen. Buratai mobilized and marched his troops to the battlefield.

A few months later, Boko Haram insurgents suffered decimation and captured territories were reclaimed by troops. By December 2016, the terrorists had been defeated with the capture and demystification of the dreaded Sambisa forest. The military thereafter hosted a drilling exercise to show its strength from the terrorists’ last territory which I participated as not to be told by anyone else.

Now, I do not consider these narratives as mere tales, because they have significance on the overall assessment of the success of the counter-insurgency operations in Nigeria today, as revisited by UNOCHA. We do know that the fall of Sambisa shattered the cohesion and scattered terrorists to an irrecoverable degree of destabilization.

Many insurgents, including Boko Haram top commanders voluntarily threw in the gauntlet in surrender to the Nigerian Army. But it is also an established fact that remnants of terrorists took refuge in remote villages and communities as well as neighboring countries, where they recuperate, regroup and re-energize to launch occasional attacks on soft and obscure targets on some communities in the Northeast.

The relocation of the headships of the military and other arms of security to the Northeast is for the final cleansing and extinction of Boko Haram terrorism from the shores of Nigeria. And I can attest that tremendous impacts have been recorded as the tempo of these occasional suicide bomb attacks has dwindled immensely.

Therefore, the UNOCHA report insinuating severance of three LGAs in Borno because of the inferred “overwhelming” presence of BHTs tasked my sense of judgment endlessly. Moreso, its likely tendency or plot to rubbish and dampen the morale of Nigerian troops at the battlefront, necessitated the crafting of this response to it.

And again and again, I picked loopholes and frowned at the unpardonable absence of a professional touch on the facts of the report, mainly from the source of the news. Firstly, the report declined identification of the LGAs which are purportedly inaccessible by UNOCHA.
This if properly put in perspective could help the military to revisit such areas if any exist in its mop-up operations to sanitize the communities.

In addition, I consider it vile propaganda to merely hold unto the straw of the inaccessibility of the local areas by aid workers to assist victims as triggered by the presence of insurgents and so, UNOCHA had to say “Most roads to the south, south-west and east remain unusable due to security concerns and most humanitarian personnel movement is done through air assets.”

It may please UNOCHA to understand that Nigeria is a developing nation and most of her rural communities are inaccessible by roads. The terrain and topography of the north-east even make matter worst when compared to other parts of the country. There exist only footpaths and that’s why the Nigerian Army adopted the motorbike usage by soldiers for rapid response to terrorists’ signals.
    What I deciphered from the report is that UNOCHA’s aid workers have been stung by the bug of phobia, which is natural, hence they are not soldiers trained to withstand adverse conditions. This can be gleaned from a portion of the report which reads in part;

“Insecurity, presence of mines, improvised explosive devices, and unexploded ordinances had continued to slow down the response of humanitarian agencies in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states”

The fear of the possible encounter by aid workers with explosive devices is what they have attributed to insecurity and yet, they admitted at some point that “Cargo, however, is being transported via road with armed escorts as a last resort.”

This is just imaginative fear of the unknown. But does anybody expect to navigate any terrain in the Northeast now without armed escorts? This is certainly impossible! But UNOCHA did not disclose any attack on their team by terrorists. It does not mean when teams, including military convoys rummage the area into the hinterland with escorts, they are immune from attacks by terrorists.

So, this outing robs off negatively on the image of UN, a world respected body. I strongly suspect they are either hoodwinked or opted for a conspiracy with local authorities in Borno, especially politicians. I have known since last year, that some politicians in the area offer secret prayers fervently that the Boko Harm terrorism should never end.

These politicians have probably embezzled funds or mismanaged same from these local governments and declaring the insurgency as ended business would expose them to probe. So, they have contrived all manner of games in the desperation to veil the truth about prevalence of terrorism to shield themselves from probity. And perhaps, the UN officials were tricked into this game.

It’s unfortunate that the UNOCHA has pandered to the gimmicks of local authorities in the Northeast. But it is advisable for the UNOCHA to stick its humanitarian roles and restrain from dabbling into the local politics of the Northeast. It should steer clear of local politics and concentrate only on its approved humanitarian roles acknowledged world-wide.

If the UN has run short of funds to keep buying foodstuffs in aid of victims of Boko Haram terrorism, in Nigeria’s Northeast, it is not enough reason to connive with local authorities to publish lies on the festering of terrorism to cause unnecessary panic in the minds of the people and to halt efforts geared towards rebuilding these reclaimed communities. It has exposed itself to ridicule with a report too overtly steeped more in fiction, than reality.

Air Force raids degrade Boko Haram insurgents–COAS

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, on Friday said the service had carried out air raids causing heavy damage to the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East.

Sadiq told newsmen in Maiduguri that several air raids were conducted under the Operation Ruwan Wuta II, designed as a final onslaught on the insurgents.

“The whole idea is to further degrade the capacity of the Boko Haram insurgents and to make sure that we get them where they are hiding.

“And in the last few days it has been very successful, we have been able to substantially effect the necessary damage and frustrate any effort for them to re-group in certain areas of Sambisa Forest”.

Sadiq disclosed that the Federal Government had procured aircrafts and helicopters to enhance air operations in the campaign against the Boko Haram insurgents as well as protect lives and property.

He said that the newly acquired jets and helicopters would soon be deployed to the front line to enhance the counter-insurgency operation in the region.

The Chief of Air Staff added that the service had constructed residential accommodation and upgraded the apron at 105 Composite Group, Maiduguri to accommodate the increasing number of war planes.

Sadiq explained that the projects were designed to provide enabling environment and decent accommodation to improve the wellbeing of the servicemen.

“The Federal Government has approved more aircraft for us and we are thinking ahead to see that we have the accommodation for those coming with these helicopters and aircrafts the government has procured for us.

“With more aircrafts you have to expand the parking space; we have reactivated a quite a number and more are coming, what we thought was to quickly expand the apron so that we have enough space for the aircrafts that are coming to be able to park.

“For us in the Air Force; we are always working, training, expanding infrastructure, building capacity for both the pilots, technicians and engineers”.

NAF Bombs Sambisa Forest with five Jets

The Nigerian Air Force said it has bombarded Boko Haram enclaves in Sambisa with air strikes from five aircrafts resulting in heavy causalities since the commencement of Operation Ruwan Wuta II.

The NAF said within three days of the rain of fire on the insurgents in the Northeast, their structures have been destroyed, while survivors who were fleeing the target areas were neutralized with rockets and cannons.

The Director of Public Relations and Information of the NAF, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya said in a statement that the air interdictions were meant to clear remnants of the insurgents from their various hideouts in the Northeast.

The statement reads: “In continuation of Operation RUWAN WUTA II, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has continued to rain significant fire on Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) locations, with intensive day and night aerial bombardments.

“On 24 Oct 17, the second day of the Operation, the NAF conducted an air interdiction mission on the BHT-infested settlement of GHATA MUSA, located about 16km Northwest of MADAGALI.

“The location was observed to have significant BHT activities, indicative of its use as a hideout for the insurgents. The air interdiction was conducted by 5 aircraft namely 2 F-7Ni aircraft, armed with bombs and 3 Alpha Jet aircraft, armed with a combination of bombs, rockets and cannons.

“Two Alpha Jet aircraft and 2 F-Ni aircraft took turns to pound the location with bombs, destroying some structures and sending a few BHT survivors fleeing from the location.

“Thereafter, the third Alpha Jet Aircraft returned to strafe the location with rockets and cannons, neutralizing some fleeing insurgents in the process.

“On Day 3 of the Operation, the NAF conducted another air interdiction mission on a BHT structure in PARISU, which is the Northeastern gateway into the Sambisa Forest.

“The target building in PARISU was confirmed to be a BHT hideout and subsequently earmarked for attack. Four NAF aircraft  namely 2 x F-7Ni aircraft, armed with bombs and 2 x Alpha Jet aircraft, armed with bombs and rockets, conducted the air interdiction.

“One Alpha Jet aircraft and the 2 x F-7Ni aircraft took turns to attack the location with bombs, thereby destroying the target structure.

“This was followed up with rockets and cannons’ attack of the target area, by the second Alpha Jet aircraft, after which no terrorist movement was further observed at the location.

“Operation RUWAN WUTA II, which was initiated by the NAF leadership, is part of efforts to further decimate the ability of the BHTs to freely operate and to give advantage to our surface forces.”

Boko Haram: NAF air strikes kills scores of insurgents

The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) yesterday said it carried out two attacks on Boko Haram hideouts in Borno State, to signal the start of Operation Ruwan Wuta II, to further decimate the terrorists.

It added that many insurgents were killed and their structures destroyed.

NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, in a statement, said the operation was carried out after a series of surveillance and intelligence reports.

The statement reads: “The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has begun Operation Ruwan Wuta II, as part of efforts to further decimate Boko Haram terrorists.

“The operation, which began on October 23, is essentially an intensive day-and-night aerial bombardment to rain significant fire on freshly-discovered Boko Haram hideouts.

“On the first day of the operation, several air interdiction missions were conducted, including one on a location in Garin Maloma.

“Previous intelligence reports, gathered through Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, showed the presence of a large number of terrorists in some dispersed structures in Garin Maloma.

“Consequently, the location was attacked in succession by two Alpha Jet aircraft. The first aircraft attacked the settlement with bombs, which destroyed the targeted structures and caused fire, sending a few survivors scampering for safety.

“The second aircraft, which strafed the area with rockets, took out some of the fleeing terrorists. Their hideouts in Arra and Boboshe, among others, were successfully attacked by the NAF Mi-17 helicopter and the newly acquired Mi-35M helicopter.”

Mallama Fitdasi, wife of Abubakar Shekau, leader of the Boko Haram terrorist organisation, appeared to be one of those killed in the air strikes.

Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya said: “Human Intelligence indicates that the wife of the Boko Haram leader, Mallama Fitdasi, appeared to have been killed in the airstrikes on Durawa settlement.

“Mallama Fitdasi was reported to have been representing her husband in a coordinating meeting with other terrorists.

“Efforts are on to confirm her death.”
