Bremen’s Lynen rues  Boniface’s knee setback

Werder Bremen midfielder Senne Lynen has expressed sympathy for Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface, who is set to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a serious knee injury.

Boniface, who joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, is expected to undergo surgery, a move considered necessary to safeguard his long-term career. The setback has cut short what was meant to be a crucial campaign for the Nigerian striker.

Lynen and Boniface share a close bond, having previously played together at Union Saint-Gilloise during the 2022 season, where both players rose to prominence in Belgium. Their reunion in Bremen had raised hopes of a strong on-field partnership before injury struck.

Speaking about his teammate’s condition, Lynen admitted he was saddened by the situation. “I feel sorry for him that he’s in so much pain. I last spoke to him before the break. I don’t know exactly what’s wrong, only that the injury is in his knee,” the Belgian midfielder said.

Boniface’s absence has compounded Werder Bremen’s attacking struggles. The Bundesliga side has failed to score in their last three matches, highlighting the void left by the Nigerian forward’s unavailability.

Despite the difficulties, Lynen remains optimistic that Bremen will find solutions. “The goals will come. It will take time, and I don’t know how much, but we’ll manage it,” he added.

Ironically, Lynen himself holds an unwanted club record, having failed to score in 78 Bundesliga appearances for Werder Bremen.

Bremen’s  coach defends Boniface amid  criticisms

Werder Bremen head coach Horst Steffen has stepped in to calm rising tensions around Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface, whose recent dip in form has made him a target of frustration among the club’s supporters.

Boniface has endured a difficult spell, with limited playing time and performances that have left fans increasingly displeased. That frustration was on full display during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against FC Cologne, where the Nigerian striker was met with jeers and whistles upon his 70th -minute introduction.

Supporters at the Weser Stadium made their feelings known as several isolated whistles rang out, especially when Boniface appeared hesitant in key moments. He was twice caught in possession while standing still, further fuelling the crowd’s impatience.

But Steffen moved quickly to shut down the growing criticism, refusing to single out the 23-year-old for public judgement. Speaking to Deichstube, the Bremen boss offered a measured defence.

“We don’t have to constantly evaluate individual players now,” Steffen stated.

He added that Boniface may simply need a spark to rebuild his confidence:

“Maybe a goal will help him to become even stronger.”

Boniface blasts critics amid  poor form  in Bundesliga

Says contributions for Bremen  go beyond scoring goals

    By Daniel  Oyekan

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has broken his silence on his current goal drought and wavering form at Werder Bremen, stressing that critics fail to see the full extent of his impact on the pitch.  The 24-year-old, currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has gone 13 games without a goal since joining Bremen,  a stark contrast to the blistering form that made him one of the Bundesliga’s most talked-about forwards last season. His struggles have sparked frustration among fans, many of whom expected the same explosive presence that helped Leverkusen to their historic league triumph in 2023/24.

However, Boniface insists his performances cannot be judged by goals alone.

In an interview with Soccer Laduma  as reported by Soccernet.ng , the forward defended his contribution to the team’s overall system.

“If you watched the game against Union Berlin, which we won 1-0, I didn’t score or assist,” Boniface explained. “But you would have seen what I bring to the team, my movement, hold-up play, and how I help us create space. That’s what people don’t see.”

Boniface’s rise in Germany was nothing short of remarkable. In his debut Bundesliga campaign, he netted 14 goals and 8 assists, playing a central role as Leverkusen clinched their first-ever Bundesliga title. Despite battling injuries the following season, he still managed 8 goals and 1 assist in just 19 appearances, finishing as the club’s second-highest scorer.

Yet, his transition to Bremen has been far from smooth. A lack of rhythm and confidence has seen him struggle in front of goal a recent outing against Mainz summed up his form: 64 minutes, no shot on target, and a 53% pass completion rate. Reports suggest that coach Horst Steffen was dissatisfied with his display, casting doubt over his starting role ahead of Friday’s clash against Wolfsburg.

But Boniface remains defiant in the face of mounting criticism.

“When you don’t score, people talk. But they don’t really know me,” he said. “I’ve been through things that made me strong. Anyone who knows me knows I don’t let these things affect me.”

The Nigerian forward added that he is focused on steady improvement rather than public perception.

“I’m trying to get better every day. Maybe this is my toughest start in Germany because I’ve gone four or five games without scoring. But last season, even after missing 16 to 20 games, I still ended as Leverkusen’s second top scorer. So when people say it’s a bad season, I just laugh — what do they really mean?”

He also dismissed social media criticism as shallow and uninformed.

“Most people don’t even watch the games,” he remarked. “They just check LiveScore, see no goal beside my name, and rush online to insult me for engagement. But I’m not moved by that.”

Despite his current drought, Boniface’s record in Germany remains impressive. Across 49 Bundesliga appearances, he has registered 22 goals and 12 assists — ranking fourth among Nigeria’s all-time top scorers in the German top flight, behind Jonathan Akpoborie (60 goals), Victor Agali (32), and Anthony Ujah (30).

While his Bremen spell has yet to catch fire, Boniface’s resilience and determination suggest that it’s only a matter of time before he finds his rhythm again  and silences the doubters once more.

After another failed transfer to AC Milan, Victor Boniface will now has to  battle for first-team place back at German club Bayer Leverkusen.

Victor Boniface has to battle Patrik Schick and 19-year-old Christian Kofane for the lone striker spot in the team.

“Unfortunately, Boniface couldn’t handle the pressure at the beginning of the preseason,” Rolfes told Kicker. “The possibility of a transfer “is an issue that arose because Boni wasn’t as resilient.

“He’s gotten better, but the question is, can we offer him the opportunities to get really good again?” he noted.

Boniface at the weekend saw his dream of moving to AC Milan fall through after he was declared unfit following a rigorous medical examination.

  • VIVA VICTOR: Capello deems signing Boniface a ‘gamble’ for Milan

VIVA VICTOR: Capello deems signing Boniface a ‘gamble’ for Milan

Legendary Italian coach Fabio Capello believes that Milan are taking a gamble by signing Victor Boniface from Bayer Leverkusen rather than Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United, as despite being ‘technically gifted’, the Nigerian’s injury record and lack of familiarity with Serie A could be an issue.

Milan have a deal in place with Bayer Leverkusen and are expecting to welcome Boniface to the city on Friday to undergo a medical. If the deal goes through, the Rossoneri will pay a €5m loan fee and will have an option to buy for an additional €24m.

Multiple outlets in Italy believe, however, that Boniface’s injury record is a cause for concern for Milan. The Nigeria international suffered two cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries during his time with Bodo/Glimt and has spent extended periods on the sidelines in each of the last two seasons with Leverkusen.

Additionally, Boniface is expected to be unavailable for several weeks midway through the season for AFCON, which will limit Massimiliano Allegri’s options up front in December and January.

Capello: Boniface ‘technically gifted, but stopped too often for injuries’

Capello, writing in his La Gazzetta dello Sport column, believes that this makes Boniface a slightly risky signing for Milan.

Capello also used Napoli as a comparison to show how Milan should have operated in their search for a new striker.

“Conte was put in a position to be able to fight for the title: Targeted signings, and a whole new spine. From Buongiorno to McTominay to Lukaku, a guarantee at centre-forward,” Capello wrote.

“Milan should do the same with Allegri. But the move for a new centre-forward has gone down a different route. Because, after a long negotiation with Hojlund, the Rossoneri have turned to Boniface, gambling on a technically gifted striker, but one that has been stopped too often due to physical problems.

“In addition, the Nigerian coming in from Bayer Leverkusen will need time to settle into Serie A, while the Dane from Manchester United would have been a ready-to-go striker given his experience with Atalanta.”

Capello went on to explain that he was disappointed to learn that Milan turned to Boniface largely due to financial reasons.

    Boniface dismisses exit from Leverkusen

Victor Boniface has firmly shut down rumours about a summer move, reaffirming his commitment to Bayer Leverkusen despite growing speculation linking him with AC Milan.

The Super Eagles striker, speaking with German journalist Phillip Arens, stated clearly: “I’m absolutely certain that my future is here… From my point of view, it’s 100% clear that I’m staying.”

Boniface’s spoke  amid reports from Bild suggesting that Erik ten Hag, Leverkusen’s new head coach, may prefer Patrik Schick as his first-choice striker for the upcoming season. This has naturally stirred speculation about Boniface’s role in the squad.

However, the 23-year-old Nigerian international has resumed pre-season training and expressed strong motivation to succeed at the club:

“I still have three years left on my contract. I want to win titles with Bayer and have a great season.”

He also dismissed any suggestion of rivalry with Schick, pointing to their successful partnership in past matches:

“Do you remember our 4-3 win in Stuttgart? We played together and had one of the best games of the season.”

Boniface emphasized that their relationship is one of mutual support and that positional flexibility — something he developed in Belgium and continued in Germany — gives him an edge.

With three years left on his contract and clear intent to stay, Boniface appears set to play a key role in Leverkusen’s attack — whether as a lone striker or in tandem with Schick — as the club embarks on a new era under Ten Hag.

Bayer Leverkusen are the first Bundesliga club to stage a pre-season tour in South America as they visit the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro from 14 to 24 July 2025.

Under the motto ‘Esquenta!’ (‘warm up’), Leverkusen will prepare for the new campaign at Flamengo’s Ninho do Urubu (Eagle’s Nest) training facility in the Vargem Grande neighbourhood. Various media engagements and a high-profile friendly match are also part of the 2023/24 double winners’ plans, alongside further activities involving Bayer’s team of Brazilian legends.

Leverkusen have been working fastidiously on building their Brazilian connection in recent years. Die Werkself visited South America’s largest country as part of their 2024 Trophy Tour, before launching Portuguese-language digital channels (Instagram, website, WhatsApp) in May 2025 and announcing the opening of the Bayer 04 Football Academy Sao Paulo.
