Ex-Super Eagles player defends Boniface over national team performances

Former Super Eagles and Manchester City player, Kayode Olanrewaju, has come to the defense of Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface, who has faced criticism from Nigerian fans over his recent performances for the national team.

In an exclusive interview with Nairasports, Olanrewaju highlighted the differences between European and African football, stressing that Boniface needs time to adapt to the demands of playing for the Super Eagles.

“People need to understand that transitioning from European football to African football is not easy. Boniface has great potential, and he deserves patience as he adjusts to the national team’s style,” Olanrewaju said.

He said: “People are always questioning Boniface’s performance with the Super Eagles, but it’s not all about the national team. He just needs time. You can’t compare European football with African football; it’s different. Look at the facilities, stadiums, and other things – it’s totally different.”

He, however, lauded Osimhen’s goal-scoring prowess, particularly his performances at Galatasaray, and commended his resilience following his situation with Napoli.

“Victor Osimhen is doing a great job. He’s really trying, and it’s not easy for him to be scoring goals the way he is. His performance in Galatasaray has been amazing. I also love how he shut everyone up after the situation with Napoli. He’s a king and should be treated as one,” He said.

Shifting his focus to Ademola Lookman, Olanrewaju highlighted his technical skills and proposed that he could become Nigeria’s first Ballon d’Or winner.

He said, “Lookman is really different, very technical, can dribble, has a great pass, and nice shooting technique. Lookman is in form, and he’s doing well. For me, it’s Lookman, nobody else. He had a great season, and I’m sure he’ll continue to excel.”

Olanrewaju in conclusion emphasized the importance of improving Nigerian football infrastructure, citing Morocco as a standard.

“Morocco’s facilities, pitches, and training grounds are totally different from ours. They’re well-kept, and organized, and that’s why they’re doing well. Morocco is bound to be in the World Cup final soon. We need to learn from them,” he observed.

Scoring goals will boost Boniface’s  confidence, says Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen head coach, Xabi Alonso has disclosed that Victor Boniface’s match-winning performance against VFL Wolfsburg would help boost the Nigerian confidence ahead of subsequent games.

Alonso told the club’s media that he was aware the Super Eagles attacker won’t find it easy coping with the Bundesliga defenders who now know how dangerous he is.

“It was very important for his confidence and mood,” said Alonso after the game. “I’m now expecting the best from ‘Boni’. It’s always difficult for defenders to play against him [but] he can and must do more. He knows it and the team needs it.”

Boniface joined Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise, amid little fanfare, in the summer of 2023. One short season later he had displaced Patrik Schick as Die Werkself’s first-choice striker before firing Bayer to a Bundesliga and DFB Cup double.

In 39 games across all competitions, Boniface has scored 24 goals. He also uses his physically imposing frame to bring others into play and has added 11 assists. All told, he has enjoyed a direct goal-involvement every 70 minutes he has played for Leverkusen, up to and including their 4-0 victory over Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League.

He has four goals from six games in all competitions for the reigning Bundesliga  champions.
