EPL: Chelsea win first league game under Rosenoir

Chelsea won Liam Rosenior’s first Premier League match as head coach as they secured a battling home victory over Brentford.  Premier Bet Malawi

Joao Pedro’s powerful first-half strike and Cole Palmer’s penalty after the break gave Rosenior a second win in three matches as Blues boss.

But they did not have it all their own way, with Brentford having more possession, shots, and shots on target than their hosts.

The Bees started brightly and Kevin Schade had their first two attempts on goal, before passing to Mikkel Damsgaard when he should have taken the chance to shoot.

When Chelsea responded, Palmer curled a shot over and Joao Pedro had a penalty appeal waved away before the Brazilian broke the deadlock on 26 minutes.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez forced Michael Kayode into a mistake on the edge of his own box and as the ball broke, Joao Pedro smashed the ball past Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Brentford rallied and Damsgaard, Schade and Mathias Jensen, who struck the post, all had chances to equalise, and Alejandro Garnacho missed an open goal from six yards at the other end.

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was then forced into a superb save to deny Schade in a one-on-one early in the second half.

With Brentford continuing to press, Rosenior sought to protect his lead, withdrawing Garnacho for Andrey Santos in a defensive change.

That merely invited more pressure, though, and Bees striker Igor Thiago uncharacteristically headed wide.

Chelsea were able to punish that mistake as a misplaced pass from Nathan Collins and slow reactions from Kelleher allowed substitute Liam Delap to intercept and draw a foul in the area from the goalkeeper.

Palmer sent Kelleher the wrong way to seal a victory that meant they leapfrogged their visitors into sixth in the Premier League.

Tottenham interested in signing Brentford’s Mbeumo

Tottenham are interested in signing Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo.

Cameroon international Mbeumo scored 20 times for the Bees in the Premier League last season.

The 25-year-old’s former manager at Brentford, Thomas Frank, was named Spurs boss on Thursday.

Earlier this month, Mbeumo was the subject of a bid from Manchester United of £45m and £10m in add-ons.

However no agreement was reached between the two clubs with the offer falling well short of Brentford’s valuation.

Sources have told BBC Sport that Spurs are yet to submit a bid for Mbeumo and there has been further interest in him from other Champions League clubs on the continent.

It is understood there is no release clause in Mbeumo’s contract, which still has a year left to run, although there is the option to extend it by another year.

Mbeumo has scored 70 goals in 242 appearances for Brentford since arriving in west London in 2019 from Ligue 2 club Troyes.

Spurs open talks with Brentford over head coach Frank

Tottenham have opened talks with Brentford over their head coach Thomas Frank following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou.

The Dane, 51, has emerged as a leading contender to replace Postecoglou.

Brentford would be entitled to compensation for Frank, with sources indicating it would cost Tottenham more than £10m to extricate him from his contract which runs until 2027.

That figure could rise depending on how many members of staff Frank decides to bring with him if he is named Spurs boss.

Postecoglou was sacked on Friday, 16 days after leading Tottenham to victory in the Europa League final, their first major trophy for 17 years.

However, it came towards the end of their worst Premier League season, as they finished 17th after losing 22 of their 38 matches.

Frank took over at Brentford in 2018 and guided them into the Premier League, winning the Championship play-off final at Wembley in 2021 and establishing them as a top-flight club on a small budget.

Brentford finished 10th in the 2024-25 Premier League season, seven places and 18 points above Spurs.

Liverpool’s Kelleher set for £18m Brentford move

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is set to move to Brentford after the clubs agreed a £12.5m fee for the player, rising to £18m in add-ons.

The Republic of Ireland international, 26, is seen as a replacement for the Bees’ number one Mark Flekken, who is heading to German side Bayer Leverkusen.

The Bundesliga club have agreed a fee of about £8m for the 31-year-old Dutchman.

Kelleher has a year left on his contract at Anfield but Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will join the Premier League champions in July to compete for the number one shirt with established first choice Alisson Becker.

Kelleher has played in 25 Premier League games for Liverpool since making his debut five years ago.

He has also played in more than 40 cup games for the club, which means he has won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups and a Uefa Super Cup in his time at Anfield.

Netherlands international Flekken joined Brentford from German side Freiburg for a reported £11m in May 2023.

He had kept more clean sheets than any goalkeeper in the Bundesliga over the previous two seasons and has only strengthened his reputation while at Brentford.

Flekken has played in all but two Premier League games over the past two seasons, registering 14 clean sheets and three assists.

Brentford sports director Paul Giles said Kayode fits the team’s style.

EPL: Late Nunez double snatches Liverpool win at Brentford

Substitute Darwin Nunez scored a late double to guide Liverpool to victory at Brentford and extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to seven points.

It looked like Liverpool’s wait for a league win in 2025 was going to stretch to three games until Nunez stepped up in stoppage time.

Nunez grabbed the opener in the 91st minute with a simple finish from close range after meeting a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Uruguay forward scored again two minutes later, showing patience in a crowded area to round off a counter-attack as Brentford were caught short in defence.

Despite taking so long to break the deadlock, Liverpool had dominated possession and territory for large periods and were fully deserving of all three points.

Dominik Szoboszlai saw an effort crash off the top of the crossbar in the first half and Luis Diaz should have made better of an attempt with his head after emerging unmarked at the far post.

Brentford were happy to sit deep and soak up pressure but struggled to pose any serious threat on the counter, with striker Bryan Mbeumo left isolated.

Liverpool maintained complete control of the tempo in the latter stages as Brentford dropped ever deeper, but lacked the potency in front of goal which they oozed in the first half of the season until Nunez delivered the decisive blows.

Victory gives the league leaders further breathing space over second-placed Arsenal, who face Aston Villa at 17:30 GMT, while Brentford stay 11th.

Arsenal beat Brentford to close gap with Liverpool

Arsenal showed they can cope without the injured Bukayo Saka as they began the year in style by recovering from an early sucker-punch to beat Brentford 3-1 away and move back into second place in the Premier League.

Forward Saka, arguably Arsenal’s most influential player this season, has been ruled out for at least two months after hamstring surgery, dealing a blow to the club’s title hopes.

A visit to a Brentford side who have been dominant at home this season felt like a must-win game for Arsenal but things began badly as Bryan Mbeumo gave the hosts a 13th minute lead with the home side’s first attack.

Arsenal did not panic, though, and Gabriel Jesus continued his recent form to equalize before halftime with a diving header.

Mikel Arteta’s side came out firing in the second half and Mikel Merino put them ahead five minutes after the restart after Brentford failed to deal with a corner.

Three minutes later Gabriel Martinelli produced a clinical volleyed finish to put Arsenal in control.

The victory lifted Arsenal above Chelsea and Nottingham Forest with 39 points from 19 games with leaders Liverpool on 45 from 18. Injury-hit Brentford’s second home defeat of the season left them in 12th spot with 24 points from 19 games.

Defeat would have left Arsenal nine points behind Liverpool, who also have a game in hand, but the way they reacted to going behind suggests they can still be a factor in the title race.

“To come here and play the way we played is amazing. Of course, the most important thing is the three points and we did it, but then the most important thing was how we reacted and we did it,” Jesus, who has scored six goals in his last four games for Arsenal in all competitions, as many as in his previous 48 games for the club, told TNT.

Arsenal did not lose a London derby in 2024 and have started off in similar fashion.

They were caught cold, though, when Brentford burst forward in the 13th minute and Mbeumo was given too much space to cut in from the right and fire a shot past David Raya.

Raya was almost left red-faced soon after when he allowed a Mbeumo shot to burst through his gloves but he managed to race back and claw the ball off the line.

It proved a pivotal moment as less than a minute later Brentford were guilty of failing to clear the ball and it eventually arrived for Thomas Partey to fire a shot that was parried by Mark Flekken and Jesus dived to head in the rebound.

Arsenal’s efficiency from set-pieces was evident again early in the second half when a corner caused chaos in the area and Merino was able to fire home a loose ball.

Martinelli then gave the visitors breathing space with a superb finish.

EPL: Mbeumo scores winner as Brentford beat Ipswich in thriller

Bryan Mbeumo scored a 96th-minute winner as Brentford beat Ipswich Town in a seven-goal thriller in the Premier League.

Mbeumo’s left-footed cross into the box evaded everyone and nestled into the bottom corner as the Bees remain unbeaten at home.

Substitute Liam Delap scored to make it 3-3 with four minutes remaining as he met Leif Davis’ cross and produced a delicate flicked finish past Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken.

Brentford came from two goals down and looked set for victory as Harry Clarke was sent off for the away side having picked up two yellow cards.

Two goals in three minutes from Sam Szmodics and George Hirst had given the Tractor Boys hope of their first victory since returning to the division.

Kalvin Phillips’ threaded pass found Hirst who passed to Szmodics and the Ireland forward finished from 15 yards out.

Hirst then fired across Flekken as Kieran McKenna’s side took control.

However, their lead was wiped out before the break thanks to Yoane Wissa’s 44th minute goal and an unfortunate Clarke own goal in the space of two minutes.

Wissa found the back of the net from Vitaly Janelt’s cross and then got a shot away from a tight angle with Clarke getting the final touch and sending the ball into his own net.

Clarke brought down Keane Lewis-Potter in the box six minutes after the restart and Bryan Mbeumo scored the resulting penalty to make it 3-2 to the home side.

Clarke then fouled Lewis-Potter in the 69th minute as Ipswich were reduced to 10 men.

Delap scored to level matters, but Mbeumo’s late strike means Ipswich are still winless in the Premier League after nine games.

Incredibly, the away side almost rescued a point when Delap crashed an effort off the post with seconds left to play.

EPL: Manchester United secure 2-1 comeback win against Brentford

For the second season running, Manchester United came from behind to secure a crucial victory over Brentford at Old Trafford and ease the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

United trailed at the break thanks to Ethan Pinnock’s controversial injury time header which came while Matthijs de Ligt was off the pitch being treated for a head wound.

But at the start of the second half, Alejandro Garnacho ended the home side’s 316-minute Premier League goal drought as he applied a magnificent first-time finish to Marcus Rashford’s cross.

Striker Rasmus Hojlund won it for the hosts in the 62nd minute when he ran onto Bruno Fernandes’ sensational flicked pass with the outside of his boot to calmly chip the ball over Brentford keeper Mark Flekken, who slid out to block.

It wasn’t quite as exciting as 12 months ago when Scott McTominay’s injury time double ended Brentford’s hopes of a first win in this stadium since 1937.

However, for Ten Hag, this victory could be more significant.

The Dutchman accused the media of creating ‘fairytales and lies’ over his position, but given United started the game in 14th, anything other than victory would fuel negativity around Ten Hag before Thursday’s Europa League trip to Fenerbahce.

  • Brentford earn thrilling draw at Aston Villa

Brentford earn thrilling draw at Aston Villa

Two goals ahead and well on top by the first minute of the second half, Aston Villa seems to be cruising home against a broken Brentford. Nine minutes later, Brentford were ahead in a remarkable turnaround. Villa found new resolve, levelled and could have snuck it by the end.  What a game.

The hosts began slowly, but when Mark Flekken rather brilliantly scooped away Luca Digne’s corner as it looked set to cross the line, they were galvanised. With Brentford ruing their inability to seize the moment, John McGinn crossed deeply from the right for Ollie Watkins to head home his first league goal in a month, despite Flekken’s despairing attempts to claw it away.

If Brentford’s ship had sailed, it was as good as sunk 33 seconds into the second half. As Unai Emery strolled to his dugout, Douglas Luiz rolled the ball to Youri Tielemans. He found Morgan Rogers who cut in and waltzed around the lumbering Kristoffer Ajer before planting his first Premier League goal past Flekken.

The visitors looked broken and Villa began to look like themselves. That was until the moment they didn’t. Extraordinarily, three goals in nine minutes meant Brentford were ahead.
