  • BSN takes HIV /AIDS campaign to schools

The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) has advocated proper conduct rather than the use of condom for the prevention and spread of the Human Immuno Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS).

The body is admonishing young people, especially pupils of public and private secondary schools, to adopt healthy lifestyles as they grow into adulthood.

Deputy Manager, Church and Public Relations, of the organisation, Benjamin Mordi, made the call at a workshop and  presentation of a book, “HIV/AIDS Pandemic: Conduct, not condom,” to pupils of Nosakhare Model Education Centre, Benin, Edo State as part of activities to mark the group’s tour of the Southsouth region.

Mordi explained that while huge resources had been deployed by the Federal Government in the provision of condoms as a preventive measure, BSN believes the right sexual attitude is an effective solution towards checking the spread of the virus which had claimed millions of lives and dreams.

“What we do in the Bible Society of Nigeria is to break any known barrier that will make the word of God inaccessible to people. We have translated the Bible into different languages and produced it in grails for the visually-impaired,” Mordi said.

“But beyond that, we, also care for the physical health of the people we produce the bible for. That is why we have gone ahead producing this material as our intervention strategy to stem the HIV/AIDS pandemic,’’ he added.

The Youths and Programmes Officer, Olayinka Moka, said the publication was targeted at teenagers, who, according to her, remain ‘’the most vulnerable in the society’’.

“We decided to write a book about conduct. We believe that is a major way to combat the pandemic in our own little way. We may not be talking about eliminating. We are talking about bringing HIV/AIDS to the barest minimum among the students first because they are young and adventurous. They are the most vulnerable,” she added.

    BSN honours Kolade, others

FORMER Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK) Dr Christopher Kolade, has been honoured by the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) at its 11th Luncheon and Awards at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

Others also honoured were wife of eminent legal academic and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (Prof Taiwo Osipitan), Mrs Cecelia Olapeju Osipitan and General Overseer, Foursquare Gospel Church of Nigeria, Rev Felix Meduoye.

BSN’s General Secretary Rev Dare Ajiboye said they were honoured for their excellence in service and contributions to nation building.

In his response, Kolade, who lamented corruption in the country, wondered why it is so rampant. “Why is corruption prevalent in the country? Why is it that when you want to do something well, people will be on your neck to do something else?” he asked. He also asked if those who are corrupt actually read the Bible.

He said Christians must not succumb to corruption for the fear of losing their jobs or means of livelihood. He said in the midst of temptation, they should fear God and trust him for His protection and care.

The octogenarian urged Nigerians on three things: read God’s  words, pray for assistance for others to read the Bible and believe God for his promises.

Mrs Osipitan, who is Managing Director, Great Nigeria Insurance Plc, promised to assist BSN to achieve its core mandate. Her husband, Taiwo, who was guest of honour, urged Christians to give Bibles as gifts during celebrations.

At the event, Permanent Secretary, Mnistry of Home Affairs and Culture,Lagos State, Mrs Grace Ebun Olademeji, represented Governor Ambode Akinwunmi.

  • BSN unveils Hausa Bible

    BSN unveils Hausa Bible

The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) has unveiled the third version of the Hausa Bible.

According to its General Secretary, Rev Richard Ajiboye, the need for a new translation of the English Bible into Hausa language arose because of the organisation wanted a bible that will appeal to Hausa and non-Hausa speakers.

He recalled that the first Hausa Bible, Littafi Mai Tsarki, was published in 1932 by the British and Foreign Bible Society, adding that this version assisted clerics to hone their skills.

But 20 years later, he said, there was need for another version, which was completed in 1979.

Ajiboye said: “Although the first speakers of Hausa found the 1979 version a joy to read, many second speakers of the language, especially from the Middle Belt and other places, found it difficult to understand.

“A common language bible translation aims to make the Bible understandable to everyone who speaks that language regardless of the geographical area or whether not the person is another tongue speaker of the language.”

He noted that over 15 million people speak Hausa, stating the Bible is aimed at those with low education and reading skills.

The translation of the Hausa Bible started in 1992 and was completed in 2012.

He explained that it costs over N30milion to translate a bible while the BSN has 15 translation/revision projects.

He thanked churches, Christian groups, firms and individuals for their support to BSN.

He also thanked the translators and consultants for their assistance.

THE Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) has introduced the first sign language bible into the country. BSN released the bible in DVD format.

At the dedication of the bible at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN) Lagos, the church’s Prelate/Moderator, Rev (Prof)  Emele Uba Uka, urged Nigerians not be hearers alone but doers of the word of God.

Thanking the initiators of the sign language bible, Uka said they came to Nigeria about two years ago for the training of teachers in the sign bible.

He expressed delight that 32 bible stories were contained in the dedicated DVD.

BSN’s General Secretary, Rev Dare Ajiboye, who described the day as the happiest in the life of the organisation, said with the bible the deaf who can’t hear would be able to, through the signs in the DVD, read and understand the word of God.

He urged the church to assist the physically challenged, saying they need help.

“The church supports us to assist the deaf and dumb and the blind,” he said, adding that a set of the DVD costs N50,000.

At the event, some bible stories were presented in drama and songs by members of the Deaf  Opportunity Outreach (DOOR).

Its Africa Director, Pastor Paul, said the organisation had translated the bible in the deaf languages of Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Uganda and Tanzania.

He came to Nigeria in August 2012 and, by the following year, trained some translators in Nigeria.

“We were able to bring out 32 stories from Genesis to Revelation and worked on the translation. The project was very strenuous and required so much strength as it was more of a physical activity, but we are very grateful to god that the job is now done,” Pastor Victor Ajayi, leader, Nigeria 2by 2, added.

During a fund raiser he led, Ajiboye, PSN, Rev Uka, and BSN’s Head of Public Relations, Pastor Samuel Sanusi, donated handsomely to launch the new bible.
