  • Open letter to Buhari

It is with great honour that I write Your Excellency, on behalf of the entire students of the University of Ilorin, to request for an interactive session with the students during your visit to the university’s 31st Convocation and 40th anniversary ceremonies slated for October, 2015.

It is on record that all through the 16-year rule of the PDP-led Federal Government, only former President Olusegun Obasanjo visited the university on Friday, May 25, 2007, to inaugurate the then newly-built Senate Building and University Auditorium. At no other time did any president deem it fit to visit the university, let alone hold talks with the students.

The indication that Your Excellency will visit the university is particularly heart-warming but the students want to meet their beloved president. It saddens our hearts that we are not aware that the President has scheduled meeting the most peaceful students in Nigeria as part activities lined up for the visit. Our students are so sad and stressed by this and the psychological trauma will increase with time except the president graciously accepts to meet them.

The cooperation of our students’ body has made the university and the nation proud on several occasions as evident in the stability of its system, impressive ranking inthe comity of institutions and, amongst others. This accounts chiefly for why our university is one of the most sought-after institutions in the country by admission seekers.

I humbly appeal to Your Excellency to duly consider our request. All the students will be eagerly awaiting your visit with baited breath. A session will them will be the icing on the cake. We are ready and willing to listen and engage in constructive dialogue with the president of our country. This is the change we yearn for and this is the change we deserve.

    Buhari receives National Identity Card

President Muhammadu Buhari was  officially presented with his National Identity card on Wednesday.

It was presented to him by the Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Chris Onyemenam, at a brief ceremony in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President did not make any remark during the presentation.

Speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the presentation, Onyemenam disclosed that the database of about 20 million Nigerians had already been captured.

He said: “We did two things. First we demonstrated to the President how the national identification number can be used to confirm the identity of an individual even if the person is not present. That is the reason why we said the identification number is a security number. Because if you have access to our data base, you can confirm the identity of an individual.

“Secondly we presented the electronic card to the President and we demonstrated to him how it will be taken round. This is one Rome that was not built in a day, slow and steady with the help of harmonization and integration. We are getting rapidly far more than we ever did before, in trying to unite our data base, and I demonstrated that.”

He said: “We must thank the United States of America for sending training teams and equipment to us. The positive results of our collaboration are evident.

  • Buhari: selfish elite behind criticism of my appointments

Buhari: selfish elite behind criticism of my appointments

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday fired back at critics of the appointments he has made so far. He blamed the elite for orchestrating criticisms of his appointments into government positions.

The President spoke through his deputy, Prof Yemi Osinbajo at the opening of the 21st Nigerian Economic Summit (NES) in Abuja Buhari.

He described as unfortunate that Nigerians pay more attention to sectional and religious interests, rather than the competence of the appointees, claiming that misgivings on the elite.

The President noted that those seeking the promotion of selfish interests were fuelling complaints on where government appointees come from, adding that the fact that a northerner is in government does not necessarily mean good fortune for his people.

He, however, said the fact that Nigerians unite in their conviction that the majority of the people are extremely poor remained incontrovertible.

His words: “You find out that the elite, whether from the Southwest, Northwest or wherever, are willing to collaborate in stealing the resources of the state. It is important to point out that the idea of where a person appointed into government comes from is meant to divert attention.”

The present administration, he said, remained genuinely committed to ensure that every Nigerian of good and proven integrity has access to serve in the Buhari-led government.

According to him, the ongoing war against corruption would be waged by by example, pointing out that the President has insisted that all officials of government must demonstrate this leadership virtue.

He said the government was already demonstrating this by not interfering in the operations of anti-graft agencies. “What is required now is the national orientation and the will to curtail corruption both in the public and private sectors”, he said.

The President said that only merit will be recognised and rewarded in what he called the ‘New Nigeria”, urging the citizens to realise that there must be discipline in all spheres of life.

He disclosed that from government’s calculations, it will spend approximately N51 to N60 to feed every school pupil in keeping faith with the administration’s campaign promises.

With the projection, the President noted that it would not cost the government as much as being speculated to implement the school feeding programme.

In his introductory remarks, Chairman of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) faculty of economics, Dr. Temitope Oshikoya, stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was at the cross-road because of slowing Gross Domestic Product and rising unemployment, noting that the all require “lowering of the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), Liquidity Ratio (LR) and the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR)” .

These decisions, he said, could however “stoke inflation and banking liquidity with inflation at 9.3 per cent – a 10 per cent foreign exchange gap of  $30.4 billion in the external reserves – and as a result, monetary policy is complicated with rising inflation and unemployment.

He urged the Federal Government to enhance tax administration reform by increasing Value Added Tax (VAT) rate to 10 per cent, diversify its base and close loopholes.

With these measures, Oshikoya noted that “VAT revenue could increase from $5.1 billion to $18 billion or one per cent of GDP to 3.5 per cent.

He also called on the government to initiate a $40 oil price benchmark and zero-based budgeting for next year.

Dr. Oshikoya noted that it will cost the country over $300 billion or N60 trillion to execute equity and efficiency programmes and warned that “there is no free lunch.”

Oshikoya gave a breakdown of what it will cost to implement these two programmes to include: equity programme, social inclusion programmes of social welfare (N1,250 trillion), unemployment allowance (N65 billion), one meal per day (N435 billion), National Identity Card Scheme (N100 billion) and Regional Growth Fund (N300 billion) – all totalling N2.150 trillion

He listed other programmes as education and health for six universities (N120 billion); new vocational schools (N36 billion); special education (N6 billion); world-class hospital (N500 billion) and for national health expenses per year (N8. 800) –all totalling N9.462 trillion.

To execute a nationwide efficiency Programme Oshikoya stated that infrastructure projects like will cost N18.000 trillion, electricity (N5.400 trillion); petroleum refinery (N100 billion) and the environment (N20 billion)- all totaling N23.520 trillion, aside from the national mortgage scheme, expected to cost N16.000 trillion; Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Loan Guarantee (N10.000 trillion) and Agric Commodity Trade Board (N250 billion)

He put the yearly projection at N61.3 trillion.

Why Buhari must work with elders, by Maitama Sule

Elder statesman and Nigeria’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Alhaji Maitama Sule has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to work with the nation’s elders to achieve the needed change in his government.

Sule gave the advice in Abuja at the inaugural ceremony and the international conference of the African Society for Ageing Research and Development on Ageing, organised by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in collaboration with World Health Organisation, (WHO)

The theme was: “New Realities of Ageing in Africa: Implications for Research and Policy”.

He added that Buhari should not abandon the aged, but adopt the mixture of the young and aged in the formation of his cabinet to produce the country’s better future leaders.

According to him, the deterioration of values and leadership qualities across a broad spectrum of society called for concern.

His words: “Every society needs old people; because new breed without the old breed will breed greed. We also need the youthful exuberant of the young. You need the experience of the old, which you cannot buy in any market.  “

“Our country must take care of the aged because this is to their own interest and benefit. As long as the aged are not dead, they are useful to the people and they must not be dumped in aged home.”

He lauded the NUC for its pioneering role in enlightening the society on challenges faced by the senior citizens in the society.

The NUC’s Executive Secretary, Professor Julius Okojie, said about 6.5 million aged people, who are 60 years and above, are in Nigeria.

Okojie, who said ageing was an irreversible process, added that the conference was convened to help discuss African approach to the well-being of older persons.

“We must find an African strategy to deal with the challenges facing the older persons of the society.”

  • Bamidele:Buhari needs political will

    Bamidele:Buhari needs political will

A former member of the House of Representatives, Opeyemi Bamidele, has said President Muhammadu Buhari needs more political will to tackle insurgency.

Bamidele delivered a lecture yesterday at the fifth Annual Law Week of the Ado-Ekiti Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

The lecture was titled: “Terrorism and Security Challenges to Consolidation of the Gains of Our Democracy: What Legal Implications and What Role for the Bar and Bench?”

According to him, the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government must crack down on those fingered as sponsors of Boko Haram for the anti-terror war to be total.

Bamidele called for the strengthening of the criminal justice system and law enforcement to give attention to preventive measures.

“Of paramount importance is the protection of the right to life of potential victims of terrorism.

“Buhari must build capacity to be able to effectively prosecute and convict offenders at the planning or preparation stage, as well as convict persons who fund or aid them.

“In essence, focus should shift from prosecuting offenders involved in successful attacks or attempts, to prosecuting offenders for planning attacks or making funds available.”
