Buhari votes, woman dies in Katsina

The President Elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and his wife, Aisha Buhari voted at the Sarki Yara, polling unit in the Kofar Baru ward, Daura local government area of Katsina State, in the governorship and state Assembly election at about 2.55pm on Saturday.

Buhari adorned in a blue babariga with a blue cap and black shoes to match was accompanied to the polling unit by hordes of security details who barricaded the place, preventing people from gaining access to him.

About 459 voters were accredited for the election at the polling unit as against 502 that were accredited for the presidential and National Assembly elections two weeks ago.

The Nation observed an increased security presence around the president elect with anti bomb squad of the Nigeria Police Force conducting a thorough search of the area before Buhari arrived to cast his vote.

The Nation observed that accreditation was faster than it was during the presidential election.

However, the weather in Daura and other parts of Katsina was unfriendly as hamattan haze causing poor visibility.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed report said that a 50-year-old woman, Yar’Baba Yusuf Babangida, slumped and died while waiting to vote in Funtua, Katsina State.

The report said the deceased who was hypertensive was on the queue at Kofar gidan Hamisu polling unit in Makera ward, Funtua local government area of the state, when she suddenly slumped.

She was reportedly rushed to Funtua General Hospital where health personnel certified her dead.

Buhari and his wife were accredited in less than five minutes and expressed satisfaction with the process adopted by the commission.

He told newsmen that the experience is an indication that INEC has improved on the card reader process considering the fast nature of the accreditation.

The Nation observed a lower voter turn-out compared to the turn during the Presidential election.

  • Abuja PMAN congratulates Buhari

AS an association that has been enmeshed in several years of crisis at the national level, the Abuja chapter of the Performing Musicians/Employers’ Association of Nigeria (PMAN), has congratulated President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari on his resounding victory in the March 28 poll.

According to the governor of the association, Mr. Collins Adeyemi, the victory of the main opposition party’s candidate is well deserved and. He therefore called on members of the association to support and ensure that he (Buhari) succeeds in his assignment.

“We are happy that Nigeria is experiencing this for the first time. We are happy that this could happen at this time Nigeria needs peace. Though people have been commending the president-elect, we must also realise that this was made possible by the outgoing president, Goodluck Jonathan.

“But for his roles, the country would have been plunged into crisis. We thank God that the election has come and gone,” he said.

In the same vein, Adeyemi’s deputy, Solomon Nda-Isaiah, said, “I have always believed that Buhari would win the election, and I pray he succeeds as president. He will enjoy our association’s full support. We know with the people’s general as our president, drastic change will come to all sectors of our economy.

Nda-Isaiah however said, he would like the incoming regime to, as a matter of urgency, “reform the Nigerian entertainment industry in general, most especially in the federal capital territory, as it is the nation’s capital. That will help to boost not only entertainment but also tourism and will help in the growth of our economy.”

  • Buhari and the task of nation building

It was Paul James that define aation building as the broad process through which nations come into being. Others look at nation building as a means through people within the state come together in order to achieve political stability and economic viability. Whatever angle one may look at nation , it is obvious that Nigeria is a mere state and not a nation. Past efforts at making Nigeria to become a true nation comparatively with nations like United States of America,  France or Germany has failed. One reason that has kept the nation on its kneels and prostrate is the divide and rule that the colonialist used while laying the foundation for Nigeria; the British cleverly created after the United Kingdom where England is far larger than Scotland and Wales. Without England, neither Scotland or Wales can hold unto political powers. Historically, the Northern part of Nigeria has been using its population advantage over the East and Western parts. Every past elections have favoured the north, as more votes and representatives come from that part.

The structure of Nigeria was that of an inbuilt power struggle among ethnic groups, those who find their way to power never plan to leave until several of them were forced out of power. But even while they occupied the position,  it is their ethnic group or groups that benefitted from the wealth of nation. Quite often to retain power was to appeal  tribal sentiments, for instance, when General Aguyi,  Ironsi came to power after the first coup,  he promoted 20 army officers out of which 17 were Ibos. The Second counter coup led by General Theophillus Danjuma came for vengeance and almost wipe out that newly promoted officers from the East. The tribalism virus that affected the politicians also inflicted wounds on the military which failed on its self appointed mission of aberration. The military incursion to politics did not only delay our political development,  but negatively crippled nation building as most of the promotions favoured a section of the country.

The second Republic began on the same fumbling and wobbling,  our political leaders did not give priority to unity of the country, but merely sought power for economic advantage. The National Party of Nigeria ( NPN) had a national spread but the party ruined the country and wasted the resources. By the  time Muhammadu Buhari and Tunde Idiagbon came to power through the barrel of gun, three members of NPN were declared wanted for the sum of 6 billion pounds. It was this  that led to the abduction of Umaru Dikko in the street of London, before the British police thwarted the operation. Buhari’s first coming would have united and built a new nation, but military politics aborted that mission. It is therefore needful that the newly elected President, Muhammadu Buhari set out  immediately he is sworn in with the task of nation building.

The 1993 General election that produced the late business mogul, Moshood Kashimawo Abiola was the last chance that Nigeria had to build a new nation. But the election was cancelled and the winner incarcerated.  MKO, Abiola never left the custody alive, as ethnicism and tenacity of office by Ibrahim Babangida messed up that move. Like a still-birth that victory of Abiola became a mirage. The nation was at the verge of war before the Yorubas were consoled with the candidature of Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999. The 8 years of Obasanjo did not heal the wounds,  rather a new vista came up that took the form of violence pervaded the political space, first by the youths of the Niger Delta regions. Out of frustration,  they destroyed oil pipelines that resulted in economic wastes and financial lost to our country. But Umaru Yar Adua amicably granted pardon or amnesty to the group and created a whole Ministry to oversee  their resettlement. The Niger Delta militants are back in the creek again to carry out the threat of vandalism over the lost of election by their kinsman-Jonathan.

The Boko Haram insurgency started by Mohammed Yusuf, a Muslim Fundamentalist  Sul-suni  Muslim was receiving foreign fund and training. By the time Yusuf was arrested by the soldiers it was to be the turning point for insurgency in Nigeria. The police allegedly killed Yusuf and one time commissioner in Borno state and many other political gladiators were implicated. The manner of approach to the termination of the insurgency by President Goodluck Jonathan was poor and has been identified as one of the factors that led to his failure at the recent election.  The insurgency in the north had caused the death of thousands of innocent Nigerians,  and millions of them have been displaced. The 240 adopted students had spent about a year in the custody of their abductors without hope that they will be rescued.

The six years of Jonathan will go down in history as one of the  worse governments of ethnic jingoism; where one ethnic group openly threatened other groups over his reelection.  The nation is further divide today because  president Jonathan  ignored the fact that it was the Yoruba man that recommended him for that post. For the whole six years, he starved  the South West of funds and denied them any tangible project.   Six years after, Obasanjo was called a motor tout that claimed to be a statesman. No elders from the region appreciated the magnanimity of Obasanjo in backing their kinsman for such a plum job. The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) that  boasted that they would be in power for sixty years faltered and fell 16 years after. The party is at the brim of collapse. Time will tell  how far the party will go. PDP is yet to recover from the shock of the defeat it suffered at the just concluded election.  If Obasanjo is guilty of  wastage of resources on power Jonathan is to be blamed for privatisation of the same. Jonathan used ethnicity to destroy the fragile unity of Nigeria. The 2015 election was bittterly pursued by the ruling party.  Apart from the initial N21 billion fund raising that was condemned by the public, the last six weeks before election witnessed wasteful spending by the PDP in the struggle to retain power at all cost.  Naira lost its value to the dollars. Bags of million dollars were dole out to traditional rulers and yes-men whose political relevance had expired especially in the South West. The Awujale of Ijebu Ode was courageous enough to tell the president that Obas are forbidden from campaining for politicians.

Diepriye Alamaisiegha, a former governor of Bayelsa state got state pardon when the nation is demanding from leaders to sweep both the thieves and the corrupt ones from the polity. Jonathan merely promised to fight it but fiddled with corruption. It grows and bears evil fruits under him.

While nations are being built, and old foes busy building bridges as it was between US and  Cuba, Nigerians are divided and ready to dissolve the  country . Nigerians see themselves from the eyes of tribe and tongue. How do we explain how Yoruba, the third largest ethnic group could not be in the list of first forty five political leaders under Jonathan,  whereas,  the people from Eastern part were occupying the post of Secretary to the Federal Government, Minister of Finance, Health Minister and many more and the South-South holding the portfolio of Minister of Petroleum,  Minister of Works, Central Bank. Contract awards are done in similar fashion. It was obvious that Jonathan who enjoyed massive votes from the South West had balkanized his support. The use of Odua People’s Congress (OPC) to destroy billboards of APC in Lagos by the PDP and the Movements of Actualisation of the State of Biafra  ( MASSOB) in the East to demand for the removal of Attahiru Jega,  the Chairman of  Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) gave the President away as a desperado and a man that was politically drowning.

Jonathan is today being hailed as a statesman for accepting defeat, but the salient issue is that the man had succeeded in dividing Nigeria, his open statement that he is more of an Igbo and that was why his father gave him the name Nnamidi is an unforgettable sectionalism. Lagos was neglected  by Jonathan,  infrastructural development carried out by the governor on behalf of the federal government was not refunded. Monthly federal allocation was reduced to the level that states like Osun, Oyo Kogi and other states could not pay their monthly  salary to workers. Projects awarded to contractors were abandoned due to shortfall in allocation. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola governor of the State of Osun stated ” The reason they gave for reducing our allocation from N4.6 billion monthly to N1.2 billion was that there was pipeline vandalism. On daily basis Nbillion of oil money were being stolen by the vandals, yet we have security that are in charge of these pipes.” He concluded that unless Jonathan is voted out, there will be no development.

Buhari task is to heal the wounds of the injured, to console the troubled souls, mediate between the aggrieved Nigerians and to assure the youths that a new dawn is here for their emancipation from lack , want and joblessness. The country had been abashed by utterances of political naivety. The election campaigns were too dirty for good minds. The campaign lack issue, but full of tantrums of verbal missiles. Words are like eggs, once broken may never be gathered. If Nigeria will move forward, there must be a mission to reconcile the various groups. While the composition of the cabinet may be all inclusive, social engineers must be engaged to foster peace, unity and stability in the country.

As a retired General in Nigeria Army, it is obvious that the military need total overhaul. The political officers will need to leave for a better soldiering. The Ekiti-gate video on the Fayose election deserve special scrutiny. All those that may be implicated must be punished.  There must be training and  retraining of men and officers of the forces in line with the twenty first Century as it is globally acceptable. The  Nigerian Police must be reorganised. The need for modern equipment for the police must be met.

Jonathan, Sambo, Buhari, others mourn as Douglas dies at 49

THE Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Research, Documentation and Strategy, Mr. Oronto Douglas, is dead.

Douglas, who hailed from Okoroba in Nembe Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, died at the State House Clinic at 5 am yesterday after a battle with cancer.

The late presidential adviser had, on several occasions, received medical attention in the United States (U.S.) for the ailment.

Born in 1966, Douglas stood out as one of Dr. Jonathan’s most brilliant and influential aides.

He was known for documenting the President’s achievements, legacies, coordinating media and campaign strategies for the Presidency.

Douglas was a leading human rights attorney and served as one of the defence lawyers to the late Ogoni leader, Ken Saro Wiwa, who was executed under Gen. Sani Abacha’s regime, in 1995.

He was the first activist to present the Niger Delta’s struggle to U.S. President Bill Clinton.

The late environmentalist was a fellow of the George Bell Institute (England) and the International Forum on Globalisation (USA).

President Jonathan has expressed deep sadness on the death of aide.

Besides the official condolence statement, Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo visited the family of the late Douglas in Abuja.

They met briefly with the family before signing the condolence register.

Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Board John Kennedy-Opara prayed for the family during the visit.

Jonathan said he had never seen anybody with a strong will like Douglas.

He said he was with the late aide last Saturday, and although Douglas knew he was going to die, he was still passionate about his work.

The President said: “Myself and Douglas are from the same local government in Bayelsa State. I knew him first when I was doing my PhD research work; he was an environmental activist. I was doing some aspects of the Ecology of the Niger Delta, and my supervisor then, a Canadian, Prof. Powell, knew him. We met in his house.

“But when I came into politics as a deputy governor, he was the commissioner for Information, and we were close. When I became the vice president, he came with me as my adviser on research, documentation and strategy – a post he held until this morning.”

“He was a dedicated young man; very committed. I was here last Saturday, even though he knew because the doctors told him in America he was going to die in three weeks, he was still passionate about his work.

“I have never seen a person with such a strong will. Oronto was a good man. He left us too early, but God knows the best. I only pray that God should provide for the family and pray that his soul should rest in peace.”

On his part, Sambo said: “This is a sad day for us. We have lost a good friend, a brother and a patriotic Nigerian. He was a person of integrity and we pray to Almighty God that his soul shall rest in perfect peace.

“We pray that the family he left behind will have the fortitude to bear this great loss. Nigeria has lost a good man and a person that had contributed positively to the country’s development.”

The President-elect, . Muhammadu Buhari, has condoled with Jonathan on the demise of his aide.

Buhari, in a condolence letter to the President, said: “I received the news of the death of your long-standing and key aide, Oronto Douglas, with sadness.

“I appreciate how close he had worked with you and consider him (Oronto) a young and dynamic individual, who still has a lot to offer our country as we build on our democracy. I urge you, Mr. President, to take heart and to convey my condolences to his family as we pray for the repose of his humble soul.”

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Power, Godknows Igali, said the late Douglas was a great environmental rights activist and thinker, who was well-appreciated globally.

“It’s a great loss. But his work is going to endure for generations unborn. Beyond Nigeria, Oronto is respected all over the world,” he said.

Younger brother to the deceased Mr. Otonye Douglas said the death was a great loss to the family and Bayelsa State.

He said his brother’s burial arrangement would be announced later.

Also yesterday, the President, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, extended heartfelt condolences to the Douglas family and the government and people of Bayelsa State.

He noted that Douglas served his country, state and the Niger Delta region, passionately and diligently, during his years on earth.

Buhari hails EU, U.S. for standing by Nigeria

THE President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has lauded members of the European Union (EU) and the United States (U.S.) for standing by Nigeria during its challenging period, before and during the ongoing elections.

Receiving the Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Fulvio Rustico, at his Abuja residence yesterday, Gen. Buhari said the EU nations and the U.S. played key roles in the nation’s stabilisation during the critical period.

The president-elect, who received a letter of congratulation from the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella which was delivered by Ambassador Rustico, promised to pay attention to areas that would enhance the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Italian President congratulated Gen. Buhari on his victory and hailed Nigerians for the peaceful conduct of the elections.

He said Italy was prepared to assist Nigeria in managing domestic terrorism, drawing from their own experience with internal terror in the 1970s and 1980s.

Also yesterday, the Nigerian community in Oman welcomed Gen. Buhari’s victory in the presidential election, describing the outcome of the polls as one that has brought happiness to everyone in their community.

In a letter to the president-elect, Chairman of the Nigerian community, Dr. Ben Nnamdi Emenyeonu, said: “The overwhelming mandate you received through the ballots speaks volumes about the magnitude of the trust Nigerians reposed in you, and we believe your leadership will mark the beginning of an era in which safety, sanity and probity will make a return to governance and the general way of life in our dear nation.”

  • Buhari receives defectors in Katsina

    Buhari receives defectors in Katsina

Two former governorship aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State, Alhaji Kabir Barkiya and Alhaji Tukur Jikamshi, have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

They were received at the governorship rally of APC’s candidate, Aminu Masari, by President-elect Muhammadu Buhari in Katsina yesterday.

Other defectors included the former Military Governor of Borno, retired Col Abdulmumini Aminu, eight serving members of the Katsina State House of Assembly and two former commissioners, Nasidi Danladi and Aminu Jamo.

Buhari thanked God for the success APC recorded during the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

He urged the electorate to vote for APC candidates during the governorship and houses of assembly elections.

The President-elect assured that he would fulfill the promises he made during the campaign.

Masari assured the people that he would improve their living conditions if elected.

He advised the party’s supporters to be law-abiding during and after the elections.

  • ‘We’re not against Buhari’

THE presiding Bishop of the Sword of the Spirit Ministries and Christlife Church, Ibadan, Bishop Wale Oke has assured the President-elect  Muhammadu Buhari  that Christian leaders are not against his election.

His statement comes against the backdrop of perceived  affinity between the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria under the leadership of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor and the outgoing President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

Rev Oke, who spoke with reporters in Lagos said: ‘’I must commend the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari for being such a rugged and tireless fighter. Once, twice and thrice he was beaten and he never gave up. I think that is quiet commendable. He never gave up because of the passion he has for his father land and this is the result we are seeing today.

“Talking about what he should do when he assumes power, he should father the nation. Nigerian needs a man who can bear her burden. He should carry everybody along. I want to assure him that the Christian body is not against his government and will never. We have been praying for him and we will continue to pray for him that God should uphold and give him wisdom on how to govern this nation.”

  • Buhari and burden of statecraft

SIR: I really don’t envy Nigeria’s President-Elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd). The huge responsibility destiny has placed on his shoulders, following his emergence in the March 28th presidential election, can only be carried by an extraordinary human being. It takes a man with spectacular attributes to accept such a task and deliver on the demands of such an exalted office.

It is unusual to envy a man who is faced with a situation as complicated as presiding over the affairs of a nation of nearly 170 million people. You really can’t envy a man who many see as the long awaited messiah. A man so talked about and adored by countless number of people. A man whose name commands enormous respect. A man who has promised to put Nigeria on the path of prosperity and moral rectitude. GMB finds himself in a situation as difficult as drilling a borehole with a needle. Can he deliver? Only time will tell.

Jokes apart, it is certainly not going to be as easy as anticipated by some Nigerians. It is an open secret that GMB will encounter countless battles in his quest to fix the system. Time indeed is of the essence. Typical of Nigerians, they will expect the President-elect to right all the wrongs perpetrated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the last sixteen years in one full swoop. All they would want to see are practical changes; both in actions and words. No room for rhetoric, just action.

GMB is assuming leadership at a time most Nigerians have become politically enlightened and are very ready to ensure that leaders deliver on their campaign promises. Nigerians have resolved to take their destiny in their hands. The era of ‘siddon look’ is far gone. We are now at a stage in our chequered political history where voters know the power that the voters’ card confers on them. The Daura-born General is coming to power at a time the nation has been bruised, battered and inflicted with festering economic, political and social wounds. I am very sure he is not unaware of what the issues are. He should perish the thought of coming to offer any form of excuse on why Nigerians shouldn’t expect much from his government when inaugurated.

Without doubts, expectations are incredibly high. Nigerians are all looking up to him for immediate answers to nagging national maladies. They would wish he could banish Boko Haram without necessarily deploying troops to the northeast. They would also wish that all unemployed Nigerians gain employment in choice government parastatals without appearing before any recruitment panel. All dilapidated infrastructure are fixed over-night. Bad roads fixed; hospitals equipped and supplied with modern state of the art equipment and corruption is killed and buried overnight. That is Nigerians for you.

As he basks in the euphoria of his well-deserved victory, he needs to be reminded that Nigerians are naturally impatient people. This sweet honeymoon won’t last long. Very soon, yes, very soon, we, including this writer, will pick up pen to remind him of the many promises he dished out during his campaign tours. GMB should perish the idea of having a swell time in the next four years. Anyone saddled with the assignment as serious as administering Nigeria should not expect to be pampered.  We shall hold GMB and his cabinet to account. The very tool with which we opposed, engaged, assessed and criticized President Goodluck Jonathan’s anti-people policies and programmes shall be used in dealing with GMB’s government. Either ethnic or political interests won’t sway us. We shall be very critical of his government; especially on issues that pertain to good governance, rule of law, corruption and insecurity.

Nigeria first, Nigeria always, should be his guiding principle. It is not about those who pooled resources together to inject life into your political aspirations. Your party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) must accept the obvious fact that your loyalty is first and foremost to your country. Chieftains within your party should avoid the temptation of meddling into issues of national importance. Your new office forbids that you discriminate against those on the other side of the divide. Like you reassured in your acceptance speech recently, every Nigerian shall be treated equally, no matter the party he or she belongs. Let him be aware that he is about swimming in a shark-infested water where all he needs is rare courage and determination to succeed. He shall encounter hydra-headed political monsters. Let him know that he is about threading on a very slippery path, dotted with thorns, snakes and vipers. It really takes a courageous man to walk this path and return unhurt.

Achieving significant success is largely a question of those you intend to invite into your cabinet. The success or otherwise of any government is determined by the array of individuals that form the cabinet. You should be very thorough in your selection of ministers and other high-ranking appointees. Competence, capability and track records should be criteria for selecting those who should form your cabinet. Square pegs should be put in square-holes, not otherwise. Shelve the idea of assembling your team based on narrow considerations. The best should be given the opportunity to showcase their innate talents.

The APC isn’t short of brilliant minds. I can reel out hundred names of tested and trusted APC members that can form a credible and serious Federal cabinet. I resist the temptation to mention names here. Let’s leave that for the APC to handle.  GMB should prepare his mind for the challenges ahead. We really have no time to waste. Upon inauguration the new government is expected to hit the ground running. Political honeymoon rarely lasts, only laudable achievements do. I wish the President-elect good luck as he prepares to assume office come May 29th, 2015.
