  • Two arraigned for alleged burglary

    Two persons, Godwin Ekhator and Yusuf Babagana, have been arraigned at an Egor Magistrates’ Court in Edo State for allegedly stealing goods worth N367,000.

    The suspects, who pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge, were alleged to have committed the offence at Evbuotubu bus stop.

    Prosecutor Lucky Sunday said the offences contravened sections 516 and 390 of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol II Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976, now applicable in Edo State.

    He alleged that the items were stolen from a shop owned by Ighomaro Mary.

    Magistrate Mrs. L. Isodan granted the accused N60,000 bail each and a surety each in the like sum.

    The case was adjourned till February 5.

  • Two appear in court for alleged burglary, theft

    Two men, Segun Dahunsi, 35, and Moses Agboye, 34, yesterday appeared before an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State for alleged burglary and theft of valuables worth N315, 000.

    The duo, a commercial motorcyclist and a carpenter of no fixed addresses, are standing trial on a three-count -charge of felony, burglary and stealing.

    Prosecutor Ayodeji Omoyeigha told the court that the defendants on October 27 around 6am, at 6, Omosekeji Street, Okitipupa, conspired to commit felony.

    He said the defendants burgled the house of Achenna Azubike and stole one Itel 1515 camera phone valued at N27, 000 and a yellow fever vaccine card valued at N288, 000; totaling N315, 000, property of Azubike.

    The prosecutor said the defendants committed offences contrary to and punishable under sections 516, 411 and 390 (9) of Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Dickson Ogunfuyi, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200, 000, each and a surety each in like sum.

    He said the sureties, who must be resident within the court jurisdiction, must also present evidence of one year tax clearance as part of the bail conditions.

    Ogunfuyi adjourned the case till December 21 for further hearing.

     

  • Ekweremadu’s home incident ‘is burglary’

    THE Police declared yesterday’s security incident at the home of Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu as burglary and not an assassination attempt.

    Giving an initial report of its investigation into the alleged assassination attempt on Ekweremadu, police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said four policemen, who were on duty at the time of the invasion of his home by the gunman, had been arrested.

    A member of the Civil Defence Corp on duty there is also under arrest, he added.

    The police said investigation revealed that the suspects burgled another house before getting to Ekweremadu’s home.

    Also arrested is one Mohammed Yusuf from Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State. Another person simply identified as Ali had been declared wanted by the police in connection with the incident.

    Moshood listed the items recovered from the suspect as including motor jack, big screw driver, big rod, a small kitchen knife and other house-breaking implements.

    The police statement said: “The residence of Deputy Senate President on No 2, Jim Nwobodo Street, APO Legislative Quarters, was broken into by Mohammed Yusuf of Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, who was arrested at the scene and now in police custody along with one Ali (other name unknown), who escaped from the scene at about 0430hrs, November 6, 2018.

    “The police have commenced investigation into the crime and the principal suspect Mohammed Yusuf of Kaura Namoda has volunteered confessional statement after interrogation, admitting to the crime and mentioned one Ali (other name unknown) now at large, who escaped from the scene, to have carried out the crime along with him.”

    It added: “There was no delay in police intervention in the incident that occurred in the residence of the Deputy Senate President.

    “Four police personnel and one  personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps on duty at the residence of the Deputy Senate President at the time of the incident have been arrested and currently in detention for investigation for negligent acts and dereliction of duty.”

    The police spokesman added that preliminary investigation carried out so far did not reveal assassination attempt on the life of the Deputy Senate President and his family, “but a case of burglary”.

    “However, investigation is still ongoing to determine, if there is any other motive behind the offence. The same suspects had earlier at about 0300Hrs broken into the residence of one Mr. Haliru Adamu of No. 38 Denis Osadebey Crescent, APO Legislative quarters, where they stole phones, jewelries and other valuables before proceeding to the residence of the Deputy Senate President,” the statement added.

    The police said the Deputy Senate President and Adamu had made statements to the police about the two incidents, adding that investigation into the two cases were ongoing and the outcome would be made public.

     

  • Police arraign teenager over alleged burglary, stealing

    Nineteen-year-old ‎Adenugba Olamilekan, on Thursday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court over alleged burglary and stealing.

    The accused, whose address is No 34 Sabo area, Ado-Ekiti, is facing two -count charge of burglary and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp Caleb Leranmo, told the court that the accused committed the offence on August 18, behind Nova School, GRA in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant broke into the apartment of one Mr Akhindenor Francis and Mr Babatunde Gbemileke, both lived at the same area.

    Leranmo also alleged that the accused stole five litres of groundnut oil valued at N2,600, five litres of palm oil valued at N2,500, rice valued at N7, 350 and cash sum of N3,000 belonging to Mr Akhindenor Francis.

    The prosecutor alleged that the accused also stole clothes valued at N25, 000, foodstuffs valued at N6,000, and cash sum of N14,000 belonging to Mr Babatunde Gbemileke.

    According to him, the offences contravened Section 411 (1) (2) and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor urged the Court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty, and his counsel, Mr Olatunde Olayemi, urged the Court to grant his client bail and promised that the accused would not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Ajibade, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

    Ajibade adjourned the case until August 28 for hearing.

  • Dad, mum, son held for ‘burglary, theft’

    The police have arrested a couple, Uroye and Margaret Teddy, their teenage son, Tega, and his lover, Karima Edom, for alleged burglary and theft.

    The suspects were said to have broken into 8, Ade Onitiri, Harmony Estate in Langbasa Lagos home of Mrs. Folasade Odunuga.

    According to the police, Mrs. Odunuga was on a three-month vacation, which started on May 27 when the incident occurred.

    It was gathered that the suspects looted her car and other household items after entering her house from the ceiling.

    Edom, who is said to be victim’s neighbour, allegedly informed Tega that Mrs Odunuga was away from home, laying grounds for the burglary.

    Police alleged that the lovers also cooked, wined and dined in the house.

    It was gathered that Tega with the aid of his parents, started looting the woman’s home and continued for weeks before Mrs. Odunuga’s maid, Eniola Abisola, came and discovered that many items were missing.

    She was said to have alerted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Adaobi Okafor, a Superintendent (SP), who mobilised her men to search the neighbourhood for suspects on the division’s watch list.

    “When the detectives checked on Tega, they saw Mrs Odunuga’s Chevrolette Aveo saloon car marked AKD512AP, parked in front of his parent’s house at New Osho layout, Langbasa. He was promptly arrested.

    “During interrogation, he revealed that he entered the victim’s house through the ceiling and gradually, he began to pack the household items to his father’s house.

    “He narrated that his mother helped him to hide the stolen items in an uncompleted building while his girlfriend Karima, hid some in her house.

    “Tega further revealed that his father went with him to the victim’s house to tow the aforementioned car. It was seen that Mrs Margaret Teddy had put the stolen properties for sale,” said spokesman for the command, Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).

    Oti said the police recovered the vehicle, a flat screen television, home theatre sound system, electric generator, a standing fan, five leather bags, an iPad, baby shoes and other personal items of the victim.

    He said: “The Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, charges residents to take their personal security seriously. They should ensure that their houses are entrusted in the hands of trusted relations, friends or aides whenever they travel.

    “He admonished that people should go back to our old ways of visiting their neighbours to check on them. He added that if that was the case in this instance, Teddy and his girlfriend Karima would not have had the effrontery to cook, eat and wine in Folashade Odunuga’s house during her long absence from home.”

  • Nollywood actress arraigned for burglary

    An up and coming Yoruba actress and film maker, Yetunde Akilapa, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate Court for burglary and theft of valuables worth seven million Naira.

    The actress, 32,  who lives at No.7, Oladelola Street, Ketu area of Lagos, is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on burglary and stealing to which she pleaded not guilty. She came to limelight in 2013 when she starred in a Yoruba movie, ‘Ileri Oluwa’.

    Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi told the court that Akilapa  committed the offences on June 27 at No. 14/16, Mutairu Street, Shangisha, Ketu, a suburb of Lagos, at 2.10 p.m. According to him, the defendant was apprehended while trying to enter the apartment of the complainant, one  Mr Adeboye Lamidi. Lamidi alleged that he was in his sitting room when he noticed someone was trying to open the door to his apartment with a key from outside. He said Akilapa used a master key to unlock the door of the complainant’s house but was caught in the act.

    “l peeped through the door hole and l saw the accused trying to open my door with a key.”

    The prosecutor also alleged that the accused on November. 16, 2015 at 3.00 p.m. broke into the residence of Oyinlola Tuga by unlocking the door with a master key. Tuga, who lives at No. 39A, Ayodele Okeowo Street, Gbagada Soluyi in Lagos, reported that the accused stole jewellery, bags and other valuables worth N7 million.

    “Tuga alleged that after raising alarm that his house had been burgled, his neighbours told him that they saw the defendant parked her car with registration no. MUS 689 CZ in front of the complainant’s house.

    “They challenged her and found the stolen items and a hundred bunch of keys on her.

    “The defendant was arrested and handed over to the police at Ifako Police Station,” he said.

    The actress was earlier reported to be in the news for stealing and breaking into people’s homes years ago and has been on the police wanted list for the past three years.

    The actress was in the news in February 2013 when it was reported that she was arrested for robbery by the police in Alade, Somolu area of Lagos. She was sent to the Kirikiri Prison and after a few months, she regained her freedom in November 2013. In January 12, 2014, she was again caught trying to steal with a bunch of master keys hidden in her brassiere at a house in Magodo Phase 2. The offences contravened Sections 287, 307 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). The Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two responsible sureties. Sule-Amzat said the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. She adjourned the case until October 22, 2018 for mention.

  • Man to spend 13 months in Kirikiri for burglary

    A 23-year-old man, Tolani Faseyi, has been sentenced to 13 months imprisonment without a fine option for burglary.

    Chief Magistrate A.A. Adetunji handed down the verdict after Faseyi pleaded guilty of the offence.

    He pleaded guilty to the charges.

    Prosecuting Inspector Matthew Akhaluode said the convict broke into a house with intent to steal and damage a window valued at N3,000.

    The convict, he said, committed the offence on May 23 at 7, Lawal Street, Igesun in Ayobo Ipaja, Lagos.

    The convict, who was first arraigned in court on June 4, conspired with another person now at large to unlawfully gain entry into the room of the complainant, Mrs Elizabeth Lawal, with intent to steal.

    Akhaluode said in the process of entering the room, the complainant’s window valued at N3, 000 was damaged.

    He said the convict held the complainant on the neck during the incident.

    The victim, he said, raised an alarm which attracted neighbours who assisted in apprehending the burglar. The accomplice, he said, escaped through the window.

  • Guard arraigned for alleged burglary, theft

    A 30-year old Emmanuel Ogbuche has been arraigned at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing items worth N7 million from a boutique.

    Prosecuting Inspector Peter Nwagwu told the court that the defendant committed the offence April 10 at about 2:30am while working as a security guard at 10 Emma Abimbola Street, Lekki Phase 1.

    Peter explained that the items are five bags containing ready-made dresses, shoes, bags and N25, 000 cash properties of Justina Oshogwenon.

    Ogbuche pleaded not guilty, explaining that “Armed robbers attacked the premises, pointed a gun at me and collected my phone.  Then they asked for the keys to the boutique but I refused. I was beaten and tied while his mouth was covered. It was then I gave them the keys after I couldn’t bear it anymore.”

    He denied stealing anything.

    Chief Magistrate Y.O. Aje-Afunwa granted him N1 million bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The addresses of the sureties, she said, must be verified.

    The case was adjourned till July 16.

    Unemployed man in court for burglary of church

    An unemployed man, Mohammed Ibrahim on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing a public address system valued at N120,000 in a church.

    Ibrahim, whose address was not provided, is standing trial on charges of stealing and burglary.

    Prosecutor Akeem Raji told the court that the offences were committed on Feb. 26 at Assemblies of God, Church, Ilupeju branch, Lagos.

    Raji said that the accused broke into the church and stole a mobile megaphone valued at N120,000.

    The prosecutor said that the accused also stole a gold necklace valued at N50,000 and a cash of N2,000 being property of one Chibueze Anyanwu.

    Raji added that the accused was sighted by a vigilance group in the area and was arrested.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 280 and 311 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences.

    Chief Magistrate T.O. Shomade admitted the accused to a bail of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Shomade adjourned the case until March 23 for mention.

    Man, 27, docked over alleged burglary

    A 27-year-old-man, Olawuni Olabiyi, was on Monday arraigned in an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court, over alleged burglary.

    Olabiyi is facing a three-count charge of burglary, theft and unlawful possession of items.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Mustapha Tajudeen, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Oct. 22, 2017, at about 12:30 p.m., along Kobongbogbe area, Osogbo.

    Tajudeen said the defendant burgled the apartment of one Olagoke Oludare and carted away some household items.

    “He stole one Gionee phone, 1 Nokia phone, one clipper, four rechargeable lamps and  N31,000,” he said.

    Tajudeen said the defendant was arrested for  unlawful possession of the items, by a police detective before he was brought to the court.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 41, 390(9), and 430 (2) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11 Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge leveled against him.

    The Defense Counsel, Mr Oladipupo Olatunbosun, prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Fatimo Sodamade, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 and two sureties in like sum.

    The case was adjourned until March 5 for hearing.
