  • Businessman jailed two years for burglary, theft

    A Jos Upper Area Court, sitting in Kasuwan Nama, yesterday, sentenced 20-year-old Ismail Abdullahi to two years’ imprisonment for house-breaking and theft.

    The Judge, Yahaya Mohammed, convicted Abdullahi after finding him guilty of the two-count charge of burglary and stealing.

    Mohammed, however, gave him an option to pay N20, 000 fine, after he begged for mercy, saying that he was a first time offender

    Prosecutor Sergeant Ibrahim Gukwat said the complainant, Ibrahim Usman, of Mista Ail village in Bassa Local Government Area, reported the case on January 5, at the divisional police station.

    The complainant, he said, returned home and discovered that unknown persons trespassed into his compound and stole from his apartment.

    The prosecutor told the court that some of the stolen items included a bag of sugar,  groundnut oil, N35,000, a DVD player, two cell phone chargers and other valuables, valued at N103,000.

    He said the complainant told the police that he suspected the convict, who at the time was at large.

    Gukwat told the court that when police detectives arrested the convict, they found in his possession some stolen items.

    He said the offence contravened sections 287 and 351 of the Penal Code.

    Teenager appears in court for alleged burglary, stealing

    The police, on Wednesday, arraigned a teenager, Tope Ojo, before an Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, for alleged burglary and theft of property valued N10,500.

    Ojo, 18, whose address was not given, is facing a two-count charge of burglary and stealing, but he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Prosecutor, Insp Celeb Latemo, told the court, presided over by Magistrate P.T Ajibade, that the accused committed the offences at Ereguru Street, Ado Ekiti at about 3:a.m on Jan. 7.

    He alleged that the accused broke into the the shop of the complainant, Yinka Adedeji and stole DVD player with remote control valued N8,000, one socket valued N2,000 and two packets of rothmans valued N400.

    Other stolen items listed by the prosecutor included one lighter valued N50.00 and N50.00 cash all valued N10,500.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 413(1) and 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap C 16 Vol.1, Law of Ekiti State Nigeria 2012.

    The magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said that the sureties must deposit a photocopy of their valid I.D cards with the court’s registrar.

    Ajibade added that the sureties must both reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case to Jan. 25 for mention.

  • Seven bankers charged with burglary

    Seven officials of a commercial bank in Ado-Ekiti were yesterday arraigned at a Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged burglary, breach of the peace and malicious damage.

    The seven officials are Damian Orizu, 48; Shehu Isah, 38; Ikeolu Akinropo, 35; Popoola Gbenga, 33; Ajayi Oluwasanmi, 33; Adebowale Bunmi, 40, and Awe Amos, 43.

    The police prosecutor, Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendants and others at large committed the offence on November 8, at Ajilosun Street, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that they broke into the shop of the complainant, Ubammadu Samson.

    Okunade alleged that the complainant owed the bank and the defendants conducted themselves in a manner to cause the breach of peace by packing his goods.

    The prosecutor added that they packed 168 drums of textcoat paint, 94 drums of Emulsion paint, 68 gallons of Precious Gloss paint, 34 gallons of Shenecky Gloss paint, 60 gallons of Oil Gloss, one big generator and 686 litres of emulsion.

    Others are 29 drums of Satin Finishing paint, 36 gallons of Chidex Gloss paint and over a million naira belonging to the complainant.

    He said the defendants damaged the door to the shop.

    Okunade said the bankers had a court order, but they did not inform the court before they carried out the order.

    According to him, the offences contravene sections 413, 249 (d) and 451 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor asked for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty. Their lawyer, Mr. Chris Omokhafe, urged the court to grant them bail, promising they will not jump bail.

    Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye granted each of the defendants bail at N100,000 with one surety.

    He adjourned the case till January 17 for hearing.

  • Security guard jailed for burglary

    A 28-year-old man, Adamu Buga, is to spend the next six months at Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos for burglary.

    The Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos gave the judgment after Buga pleaded guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Mr. T. O. Shomade sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment without an option of fine.

    “This will act as a deterrent to others,” he said.

    The prosecutor, Raji Akeem, had told the court that the offence was committed in September at GAK Universal Allied Industries Ltd, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.

    He said the accused, a security guard, whose address was not given, gained entrance to one of the offices by breaking the ceiling and door.

    The prosecutor said the broken ceiling and door were valued at N75, 000.

    “The accused stole N99, 250, 00 and a plasma television valued at N150, 000.

    “Efforts to locate him failed until he was seen by one of the workers, who shouted. A passerby helped in apprehending him,” he said.

    The offence contravenes sections 406, 287 and 350 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

  • Nursing mum, two others arraigned for burglary

    A nursing mother, Funke Arowolo, and two others were yesterday arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged burglary and stealing.

    Arowolo, 18, was brought to court with Seun Adedayo, 19 and Sunday Ojo, 31. Their addresses are unknown.

    They allegedly broke into a shop and stole items and money.

    The accused are facing burglary and stealing charges.

    The prosecutor, Oriyomi Akinwale, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on October 30 about 11: 30pm at Igbehin Odotu,

    Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that they broke into the shop of Mrs. Okelola Bosede and stole recharge cards valued at N2,400, five packs of soap valued at N750 and N9,500.

    Akinwale alleged that the defendants also burgled the warehouse/store of Mr. Babatunde Suraju and stole a carton of malt drink and a wooden saving box containing N50,000.

    He said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Their lawyer, Mr. Emmanuel Sunmonu, urged the court to grant them bail, promising that they would not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Omolola Akosile, granted the defendants bail at N10,000 each with one surety.

    She adjourned the case till November 8 for hearing.

     

  • Baker gets five years for burglary

    A 33-year-old baker, Samson Sanjo, who broke into his former employer’s shop to steal, is to spend the next five  years in jail, a Lagos court has ruled.

    An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court sentenced Sanjo after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of housebreaking and entering to steal.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. O. Sule-Amzat, who gave the verdict, said the convict should serve the sentence without an option of fine.

    She said the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

    “The prosecution established that the convict, a baker, had worked in the shop and was prosecuted about two years ago for stealing N75, 000 from the same shop.”

    Police prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie had told the court that the accused committed the offences on October 20 at 510, Ikorodu Road, Lagos.

    He said the complainant, Mrs. Islamiat Owoyelu, a trader, reported the incident at Alapere Police Post, Ketu, Lagos.

    “The complainant received a phone call from one of her neighbours that the accused, who had once worked for her, used iron cutter to cut the padlock of her shop.

    “She said the accused was caught and beaten up by people before she arrived.”

    Ihiehie said the complainant also told the police that her shop was burgled twice early this month and N37, 000 was stolen.

    The offences contravene Section 310 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

  • 35-year-old man in court for alleged burglary

    A 35-year-old man, Gambo Paul, was yesterday arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged burglary and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Johnson Okunade, told the court that the accused committed the offence on October 10 about 11:30am at Mango, off

    Federal Housing Estate, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused allegedly broke into the apartment of the complainant, Seun Adebayo.

    Okunade alleged that the accused stole one Tiger generator valued at

    N14,000, one gold chain valued at N60,000, one Panasonic TV valued at N13,000, a bag of Semovita and Knorr chicken seasoning valued at N3,000.

    He said the accused also allegedly stole one solar lamp valued at N5,000, one torchlight valued at N2,000, one black leather belt valued at N15,000 and a gold

    wedding ring valued at N20,000, belonging to the complainant.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 383 and punishable under

    Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Vol.1 Laws of Ekiti State

    2012.

    He asked the court for adjournment to enable him study the case file and present witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    His counsel, Mr. Temitope Omotayo, urged the court to grant him bail, promising he would not jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adesoji Adegboye, granted bail to the defendant at N200,000 with one surety.

    He adjourned the case till December 1 for hearing.

  • Five held for burglary, phone theft

    The police in Enugu State have arrested five suspects for allegedly breaking into phone stores and snatching phones from victims in Enugu, spokesman Ebere Amaraizu said in a statement in Enugu yesterday.

    He said 17 phones and a laptop were recovered from the suspects.

    Amaraizu said the suspects terrorised victims at Texaco and Liberty on Abakpa axis and New Haven axis of Enugu.

    He said their arrest at New Haven followed a tip-off.

    “It was gathered that the suspects had allegedly conspired and broken into a phone shop on Chime Avenue, New Haven axis of Enugu at midnight, stealing Apple I-phones and laptops.

    “Following the report, operatives swung into action and through intelligence information, nabbed three suspects and recovered 17 of the stolen phones and a laptop.

    “Investigations led to the arrest of two other suspects on October 8, bringing the number of the suspects to five. A manhunt has been intensified for the fleeing ones,” Amaraizu said.

    He gave the names of the suspects as: Charles Chekwube, Kelechukwu Okpara, Eneh Ifeanyi, Anih Emeka and Okpara Chisom (female).

    According to him, the suspects are helping the police in their investigation.

    Amaraizu said the suspects attributed their actions to bad company and peer influence.

    “Charles Chekwube said his friends suggested that they should break into a phone shop and lay siege to their victims in Abakpa and its environs, to steal phones,” he added.

     

  • House help jailed 13 years for burglary, theft

    An Igbosere Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, has sentenced a house help, Anna Payaro, to a total of 13 years imprisonment with hard labour for burglary and theft of her employer’s $5,000.

    Payaro, 28, was found guilty on a five-count charge of conspiracy, burglary, breaking, entering and stealing.

    Following a 10-month trial, Chief Magistrate K.O. Matepo sentenced her to two years imprisonment each on counts one to four and five years on count five, with hard labour, totalling 13 years.

    But Payaro will spend only five years in jail, because the sentences are to run concurrently.

    The convict was arraigned by the police on June 6, 2016, and re-arraigned on a substituted charge on November 22, 2016.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji told the court that Payaro and her accomplices, who are still at large, conspired to commit the offences on May 27, 2016, at Goshen Estate, Lekki Lagos.

    Osuji said she broke into the residence of her boss, Mr Olatunde Adepoju, while he and his family were abroad.

    According to him, Payaro stole Adepoju’s jewellery valued at N1.2million, a cash sum of $5000, and N300,000.

    During the trial, one of the estate’s executives, Mrs Teniola Jaiyeola, testified that she heard the convict talking to her accomplice about the incident.

    Jaiyeola said “When I saw the broken wall and Payaro told me that it was a burglar that broke into the house, I told her that the opening at the broken wall was too small for even a baby’s head to enter.

    “I later overheard her telling someone on phone that ‘They said that the wall you broke is too small, for  a baby’s head to enter.’”

  • Court remands man, 28, for ‘burglary’

    An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State yesterday remanded Niyi

    Oluyole, 28, in prison for alleged burglary and stealing.

    Police prosecutor Oriyomi Akinwale said the accused and others at large committed the offence on December 13, 2016 at Zone 7, Olorunsogo, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused and others at large did break into the house of Mr. Michael Olutoye.

    Oriyomi said the accused committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Vol. 1 Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor alleged that the accused and others at large stole N148,000, one Dell laptop screen valued at N300,000, one Sony digital camera valued at N568,000, belonging to Mr. Olutoye Michael, adding that they also stole N38,000 belonging to Mr. Uweh Anayo.

    He said he committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Vol.1 Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor applied for an adjournment to enable him duplicate the case file and send to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    The plea was not taken, as his counsel, Mr. Gbenga Oladimeji, applied for his bail, promising the court that he would not jump bail, but the bail was not granted.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Taiwo Ajibade, said the court lacked jurisdiction on the trial and remanded the accused in prison custody, pending the outcome from legal advice.

    She adjourned the case till August 29 for hearing.
