Group takes campaign against indecent dressing to Lagos neighbourhood

THE scorching sun that eclipsed the morning bliss shortly after the Lagos monthly sanitation exercise ended on Saturday November 28, 2015 did not deter Pastor Bob Chukwukadibia-led Society Against Indecent Dressing (SAID) from staging a campaign against indecent dressing in Alimosho, a suburb of Lagos.

“Indecent dressing is an evil trick from the pit of hell; stop indecent dressing and save the society from satanic grip,” Chukwukadibia shouted as he distributed campaign flyers to people along the road.

To drive home their message, members of the group engaged roadside traders, artisans and residents as they walked along Egbeda-Idimu Road.

The rally, which started from Egbeda Bus Stop and terminated at Idimu, lasted two hours amid relative response from bystanders, commuters and motorists who received flyers from members of the group.

Not a few residents commended the group for addressing an issue that is fast becoming the nightmare of the society.

A cross- section of residents praised the group for embarking on the campaign to rid the society of indecency.

A trader, Mrs. Fausat Akinola, in her remarks, applauded members of SAID for the courage to challenge the public to rise against the malaise.

She said: “Members of this group (SAID) deserve kudos for giving it a thought to correct our misguided youths against displaying nudity all in the name of fashion. I believe that consistent campaign in this direction will no doubt reduce if not totally eradicate the problem in our society.

“In the past, you cannot see people bearing out sensitive parts of their body but the reverse is the case lately. This is why it is important to encourage a campaign like this and I believe their message will go   a long way to redirect the mind of those who indulge in indecent dressing soon.”

A resident, Clement Adeola, said:”It is important to appreciate the need to engender values that can uphold decency and discourage the indiscretions of some people in the name of fashion. To this end, it is necessary to commend the effort of the organisers of this campaign and their resolve to add a voice to the need for people to conduct themselves within the operating lines of decency by wearing clothes and fashion apparels that beautify and shield their body from unnecessary  or sinful exposure.”

Giving reasons for the campaign, Pastor Chukwukadibia said:” I did not embark on this campaign on my own. It came as a vision from God in 2008 after a female passenger displayed nudity in a public bus. She was wearing a trouser that exposed sensitive parts of her body and God ministered to me to start a project towards curbing such fashion indiscretion that insults moral values in the society. I have been waiting for God’s direction since 2008 and the divine direction finally came a few months ago, hence, this public outreach.

“Like I said during the rally, indecent dressing is a satanic trick from the pit of hell to rob perpetrators of their heavenly inheritance and people do it ignorantly without knowing the consequences. Unfortunately, perpetrators are luring innocent people to sin through what they wear. What some people wear have robbed them of good things because of the way they appear or are seen. Many wear dresses that expose their private parts; young boys indulge in nudity by sagging their trousers and the females expose sensitive parts of their body by wearing clothes that can barely cover them up and even pierce their ears indiscriminately.”

Chukwukadibia also spoke on the plans by the group to take the campaign to other parts of Lagos before the year runs out.

Hear him: “We have partnered with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Egbeda branch, and we enjoyed enormous support from members of the trade union today. In a few days time, we shall be taking this campaign to Ikeja where car and door stickers among other campaign materials will be distributed to people. We shall subsequently move to other parts of the state, according to God’s direction. Hopefully, we shall take the campaign to relaxation spots, hotels, club houses and notable eateries in order to enlighten people about the danger of this emerging problem.

“Proverbs 14: 34 says that righteousness exalts a nation and that sin is a shame to the people, therefore, our objective is to promote a culture of decency in the mode of dressing  among members of the public so that our nation can be exalted. I want people to embrace this campaign and replicate it in their homes and offices. Both Christianity and Islam frown at indecent dressing and there is need to discourage our people from acquiring a foreign culture that is destroying not only our values but our sense of decency as a nation.”

  • NBCC to lead positive perception campaign for Nigeria

NBCC to lead positive perception campaign for Nigeria

Worried by the continued negative perception of Nigeria abroad, in spite of some unfolding positive strides by the new administration, the Nigerian British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) has promised to engage Nigerians in Diaspora towards correcting the wrong perception, especially in the British society and its media.

At the inauguration dinner of the 14th Executive Council of the chamber in Lagos, last weekend, newly-installed NBCC President/Chairman Prince Adedapo Adelegan decried the way global attention on Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy, is promoting pessimistic beliefs of wars, strife, low return on investment, unfriendly business environment and scams.

He said NBCC would soon unfold a programme aimed at deploying various platforms of engagement that would include commissioned documentaries, cultural road shows and establishment of legacy economic activities to re-create Nigeria’s image.

Adelegan noted that the Chamber was established in 1977 to promote trade and investment between Nigeria and Britain, with particular emphasis on enhancing relationships towards building critical infrastructure that would support Nigeria’s economic growth, especially in agriculture.

Calling on the country’s political leadership to chart a progressive path for the future, Prince Adelegan observed that India remained a good example for Nigeria to emulate. He said India has continued to make strategic investment in critical areas of its economy, thereby securing superior design and engineering know-how that has supported the local manufacturing industry and transformed the country into a major industrial nation.

He added that for Nigeria to achieve her dream of economic transformation, all critical stakeholders must pool efforts to install technology that is important as a foundation for the future of the economy. “We will need Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from UK, but will also encourage Nigerian investment in that country because the vibrancy of our entrepreneurial spirit will ultimately define the place of Nigeria as the next frontier of global economy”, he said.

Adelegan also revealed that the Chamber has concluded arrangements for the establishment of an academy and SME support centre in partnership with a leading vocational training centre in the UK.

Congratulating the new president and his team, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Oluranti Adebule, said the trade relationship between Britain and Nigeria has been greatly beneficial over the years.

His words, “With increase in trade volume from £1.42 billion in 2010 to over £7 billion in 2012, Nigeria ranks high as UK’s second trade partner on the continent after South Africa. The role of NBCC in the growth of this bilateral trade cannot be over emphasised”.

He said Lagos has always been the greatest beneficiary of the trade relations between Nigeria and UK, which has contributed to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $136 billion as well as her rising profile as a globally acknowledged mega city.

Ambode expressed the hope that the new NBCC executive council would help attract more business to Lagos. He assured the business community of  doing business  with ease, adding that his efforts in the last few months have been focused on improving infrastructural development and strengthening the capacity of security agencies to guarantee safety.

The event solidified Intel’s pact with innovation and creativity in the Nigerian information technology industry.

The Best of Both Worlds Campaign, which was launched in Nigeria in November, highlights the practicability of using the 2-in-1 device that offers the flexibility of a convenient switch between PCs and tablets whenever and wherever. The Best of Both Worlds Campaign also highlights how consumers can get more productivity, creativity and self-expression out of 2-in-1 device, for the price of one.

Speaking at the event, Marketing & PR Manager, Intel West Africa, AdimI siakpona, noted that Intel, in partnership with Lenovo and Microsoft, was proud to showcase the Lenovo Yoga series to Nigerians as a package that offers its users the best of both worlds in one unique and sleek device.

According to Isiakpona, “The devices in the Lenovo Yoga Series are powered by Intel’s best processors and Microsoft Office and Windows capabilities. This affordable device gives innovation and flexibility a fresh meaning. The device is a laptop as well as a tablet, offering a dynamism for personal preferences of the user. The climax of the event was when Kiya Iyemfapwa won the grand prize of a brand new Lenovo Yoga Series laptop during the raffle draw.

Overwhelmed, Iyemfapwa said she was extremely grateful to Intel, Lenovo, and Microsoft, for their generosity.

In her words, “I never thought I would win it when I dropped my name for the raffle draw but I guess it goes to show that nothing is impossible. I just came to the mall to see my friends and now, I am going home with a brand new laptop. I am so excited. I’m grateful to Intel, Lenovo, and Microsoft for this laptop. This is definitely a great way to end the year for me.”

Popular media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, who was recently unveiled as the campaign ambassador of the Best of Both Worlds Campaign, will be visiting the cities of Abuja and Port Harcourt to talk about the campaign, using the dynamism of his career and the relatability of the campaign message to his person.

  • Knorr launches campaign against anaemia

Knorr, produced by Unilever Nigeria, has launched a campaign called Knorr Social Mission.

It is aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians, with a special focus on teenage girls and promoting maternal health to help reduce the prevalence of iron deficiency Anaemia in Nigeria.

The campaign is a demonstration of the brand’s fight against iron deficiency Anaemia through its unique culture of good nutrition targeted at making nutritious meals a priority, easy to achieve and more desirable.

According to a statement from the company, Knorr is propagating the Knorr social mission tagged ‘Green Food Steps’ with its brand ambassadors, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and her daughter, Meraiah.

The Green Food Steps encourages mothers to toss leafy green vegetables into their stew, stir it all together and crumble in iron-enriched Knorr cubes to achieve a tasty, nutritious and iron rich Knorr Stew for healthy living.

Brand Building Director Foods, Unilever Nigeria, Mrs. Nsima Ogedi-Alakwe, said the campaign was part of Unilever’s commitment to bringing the United Nations’global goals to life through its Knorr social mission.

Mrs Ogedi-Alakwe said: “Through our social mission campaign, Knorr is championing the fight against iron deficiency, giving hope to two billion people worldwide who suffer from micronutrient deficiencies.’’

She added: “The Green Food Steps campaign is part of the brand’s social mission to improve the quality of life through healthy nutrition by getting Nigerian mothers who are the cooks of today, and teens, the cooks of tomorrow, to adopt simple cooking behaviours the Knorr Way, and enrich the nutritional value of their weekly meals.

“The quick steps showcase that it is easy for people to effectively change their cooking habits without compromising on flavour, time, or cost.

“Knorr is helping to improve health and livelihoods of Nigerian women, teaching them to cook more iron-rich meals and creating a #BrightFuture by following three simple Green Food steps – Toss, stir and crumble,” she added.

Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia among women and young adults and eating food with too little iron over an extended period of time can actually cause iron shortage in the body. Reports say that in Nigeria, almost one in two women of reproductive age are anaemic and 50 per cent of these cases are caused by iron deficiency.

Chivita 100% ‘Juice Ball’ campaign lauded

Since brands get recognition through the experiences they are associated with, it is important to ensure that their communications are developed to draw attention to positive emotions.

  • Campaign against indiscipline to begin by Dec

Campaign against indiscipline to begin by Dec

A national campaign against indiscipline, African-time syndrome, loss of social norms and values will begin before the end of this year.

Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed said this yesterday at a strategic planning meeting with the ministry’s chief executives of agencies and other top management workers in Abuja.

“Those invited to this meeting have been painstakingly selected because I believe they have the necessary expertise to help drive the campaign.

“However, let me state unequivocally that everyone in the Ministry of Information and Culture as well as its parastatals, is key to the campaign.

“This is because as the lead ministry, we must first buy into the campaign and own it before we can propagate it,’’ Mohammed said.

The minister said that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) would spearhead the campaign to ensure positive change of attitude, values and behaviours of Nigerians.

He said: “As I have said on several occasions, the National Orientation Agency will be in the forefront of the campaign, because it is in line with its mandate to positively change attitudes, values and behaviours.

“Make no mistake about it, we need to change the way we do things in Nigeria.

“It is important to let our people know that they cannot continue to do things the same way and expect a different result.

“The impending campaign must take on indiscipline, the lack of respect for time, loss of our time-tested values and generally lead to attitudinal change in such a way that there will be a paradigm shift in the way we do things.

“This is also in line with my vision as Minister of Information and Culture.’’

  • Governor’s campaign organisation decries poll survey

Governor’s campaign organisation decries poll survey

The Restoration Campaign Organisation (RCO), an umbrella campaign body for the re-election of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, has decried a survey on the December 5 Bayelsa State poll.

It described it as a prelude to the All Progressives Congress’ (APC’s) plot to rig the election.

A statement at the weekend by Mr. Jonathan Obuebite, RCO’s director of Media & Publicity said: “The Restoration Campaign Organisation (RCO) received with shock, the survey conducted on the would-be voting pattern of the electorate in the December 5 election by the Election Frontline, a team comprising APC card- carrying members, led by MacPepple Joshua.

“Obviously sponsored by the APC leadership, the Election Frontline simply sat in Lagos and wrote its report, which unfortunately alluded that the APC candidate, Timipre Sylva, would win the election. “Ordinarily, this unfounded opinion poll should not merit a reaction from either the PDP or the Restoration Campaign Organisation, but we have decided to react to the falsehood, propaganda and blackmail of the APC pollsters to set the records straight. It is instructive to note that this same experts had predicted that Sylva, who was Bayelsa East senatorial candidate in the 2015 general election would win, but he lost to Senator Ben Murray Bruce of the PDP and this is one of the reasons people must discard this survey by the Election Frontline.

“The majority of Bayelsans have spoken in clear terms that they will re-elect Governor Dickson to consolidate peace, prosperity, development and security of the state.

“As we speak, the evidence on the ground shows that Bayelsans want to retain Governor Dickson in Creek Haven, as it has been agreed by all that you don’t change a winning team. Governor Dickson is about finishing the first half of four years and the people on whose thighs sovereignty lies have asked him to complete the second half of four years. These and many other reasons are why the APC cannot stop Dickson’s re-election on December 5. The Bayelsa people have demonstrated this outpour of unrivalled love for the countryman governor as made manifest in the governor’s endorsements and his community tours across the eight local governments and by the community of non-indigenes! Bayelsans are waiting for D-day  to renew their social contract with the governor and when we get to the bridge, we shall cross it.

“It is against this backdrop that we urge Bayelsans, Nigerians and the international community to ignore the survey. This survey by the APC- controlled Election Frontline is not credible and this kind of opinion poll doesn’t win elections in Nigeria because it is manipulated, skewed and commercialised. It is important for the world to know that APC is desperate to win Bayelsa by hook or crook. Therefore, we see this latest poll survey as a prelude to prepare the ground for their sinister plot to rig the December 5 election.

“But our consolation is that Bayelsans have vowed to resist rigging. The APC has no foothold in Bayelsa and Ijaw land. Our people cannot afford to gamble with their destiny. Re-electing the APC candidate, Timpre Sylva, will spell doom for our people and return Bayelsa State to Egypt. Under Governor Dickson, we can see the promised land and this is why we must re-elect him to consolidate his track record of selfless service to Bayelsans and humanity.”

  • ‘Buhari is fulfilling his campaign promises’

‘Buhari is fulfilling his campaign promises’

Hon. Akintayo Amere is a House of Representative member from Iwo-Ayedire/Olaoluwa Constituency, Osun State. In this interview with SINA FADARE, he says security is a collective enterprise that requires the input of all stakeholders.

What impact have you made on your constituency?

I was first elected into the House of Representatives in 2011 to represent Iwo, Ayedire/Olaoluwa Federal Constituency of Osun State. As a result of my meritorious service to my people within those four years they decided to re-elect me in 2015.

Along the line, l was able to donate farm implements such as two brand new tractors to my constituents. I also gave scholarships to indigent students from the constituency; empower unemployed youths with millions of naira; sink boreholes throughout the constituency, electrification step down plan aiming at boosting electricity supply and distribution of General certificate of Examination forms (GCE) to the first six students in  three selected schools,

I also recommendations to the Federal Government on how to complete abandoned federal projects within my constituency. I have also assisted in subsidising the price of fertilizers for the farmers, provided financial assistance for market men and women, artisans.

In the area of education, I organised campus scope programme at the Reality TV, Iwo. I’ve equally built offices for market men and market women at Odo Ori Iwo and the offices are being furnished with modern facilities, I have built an ICT centre at AUD Araro Iwo.

What is your assessment of the APC-led Federal Government?

President Muhammadu Buhari can be described as a messiah sent to save us from the 16 years of PDP mal-administration in the country. As you can see, within Buhari’s few months in office so far, he has done a lot and the good people of Nigeria are heaving a sigh of relief.

For example, fuel price has stabilised at N87.00 per litre and it is readily available at filling stations across the country. The price of cement has equally gone down, from N2.000 per bag at the tail end of Jonathan administration, to around N1, 200.

President Buhari also deserves kudos for his fight against corruption. Buhari should be commended as well in the area of job creation, security, especially in the area of taking the battle to the door step of Boko Haram.

What can be done to put a stop to the insurgency in the Northeast?

The cooperation of all Nigerians are needed to make the December deadline a reality. Nigerians should try to compliment the effort of the Federal Government and security agencies, by being security conscious, especially in the areas like Abuja, Bornu, Yobe, Adamawa, Lagos and Plateau States. The reality is that government alone cannot do it alone, except through our assistance.

I also want to use this medium to call on private establishments to assist the government, by creating employment opportunity for the teeming unemployed graduates.

For instance, we have a lot of potentials in agriculture, which use to be the pivot around which the economy revolved in the early 60s. If our youths can be encouraged to embrace agriculture, the issue of unemployment will become a thing of the past.

How will you assess the performance of Governor Rauf Aregbesola?

No matter what anybody says, the reality is that Governor Rauf Aregbesola is a performer. It is only those who are familiar with the state before he became governor that can appreciate what he has done so far. The network of roads that he constructed to open up the rural areas is second to none.

Besides, the governor sponsored some young farmers to Israel and China, to go and learn the rudiments of modern-day farming. By the time he would be winding up, the state is going to be the food basket of the nation and this will translate to opening the economy of the state; from being a civil service state to one driven by the private sector.

Most banks have agricultural-related products that the youths can assess, to turn farming into a business. This is a better option than waiting for office work which may never come and in the end, they may be frustrated. This is the time to put on their thinking caps and be more creative to utilise the abundant opportunities in the sector.

In terms of security, Governor Aregbesola has invested heavily in this regard and that is why the state is relatively peaceful. In this area, he also engages these youths as volunteers and they are also engaged in various sectors, including sweeping the street, traffic monitoring, environmental sanitation officers, and other sundry matters. At the end of it all, the multiplier effect on the economy of the state is very significant.

  • Waje launches pro women campaign

    Waje launches pro women campaign

Sonorous singer, Aituaje Iruobe, aka Waje, has embarked on a gender equality and opportunity campaign, which kicked off with the release of new pictures, and scholarship fund for five young Nigerian girls.

The campaign tagged #AfricanWoman is geared towards enlightenment for the female gender; the singer who is a United Nations/ONE and Purple ambassador aims to empower African girls and women through her foundation, the www.waje.global.

According to the single mother of one, “the most important and often misunderstood concept in the narratives for gender equality is opportunity. One of our key goals for this project is to create awareness about the need to guarantee the same opportunities for education and life choices for the African girl or woman. To make gender equality a reality in Africa, we must educate and empower women. I believe that the only way to do this is by being an example and a voice for our women who do not have the opportunity to speak for themselves. We must enlighten them. We must let them know that they can be the driving force of African growth. Through www.waje.safehouse.org, we will be touring the continent and kicking off a scholarship fund for 5 bright young women who are unable to fund their tertiary education.”

Waje also revealed that there have been support from other African countries: “Mad support from Ghana!!! God Bless you guys! Support the campaign to empower African women. Support the campaign to shine the spotlight on the problems confronting Africa women. @officialwaje is embarking on a unique campaign to empower young African women. Join her now, let your voice be heard if you are concerned about the plight of young African women follow the hashtag #AfricanWomanWithWaje.”

Waje hit the spotlight with P-Square’s 2008 hit track “Do Me” and has since then remained a voice to reckon with on the Nigerian music scene.

  • MISS NIGERIA LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN AGAINST TEENAGE PREGNANCY

MISS NIGERIA LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN AGAINST TEENAGE PREGNANCY

THE recently crowned Miss Nigeria International, Africa, Ayo Anjorin, last Tuesday, launched the campaign against teenage pregnancy as a way of giving back to the society.

The launch, which happened to fall on her birthday, took place at Ola Quranic Private School in Lagos Island focuses on teenage pregnancy and the risk of getting pregnant at a tender age.

Speaking at the event, Doctor Afolabi Ajelabi from Lagos Island Maternity Hospital spoke about oral sex without using vulgar language. He also lectured the students on how to avoid being victims of teenage pregnancy.

“When you realize that you are beginning to develop features that look like your elder sister, then you are growing to become adults and at this stage you have to be very careful because, as good as it is, you are getting matured. You also need to stay clear from things that might derail you from the most important things in your life. I am glad that you study hard but teenage pregnancy can easily truncate that thing you want to become in future.

“Although it is a good thing to be pregnant but to be pregnant at the right time and for the right person is very important,” Ajelabi said.

The Doctor also commended Anjorin for coming up with the initiative, stating that it will enlighten teenagers about how to avoid being victims of teenage pregnancy.

“This is a function of awareness because a lot of people don’t know, they only assume so awareness is key and this is what Miss Nigeria Int’l Africa has been able to do with this program. If we have more of this program we will probably get more result,” Ajelabi added.

Ayo stated that the program is her way of giving back to the society. “Actually this is my own way of giving back to the society as I have said before band I think this is what is happening in my community. It is very rampant here and I think I need to educate and impact some knowledge into them about it. So this is my way of helping their family and the children involved,” she said.

Some of the schools present are Ola Quranic Comprehensive High School, Deen Master Private School, Waaslat Private School and First Love Private School.
