    NOA mounts hand-washing campaign

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged students and pupils in the state to practice proper hygiene to prevent the spread of various infectious diseases.

Ebonyi State Director of the agency, Dr Emma Abah gave the advice while speaking to students of Urban Primary School, Abakaliki, during a visit to the school on the occasion of global hand-washing day.

He said the celebration is an oppurtunity to design, test and replicate creative ways to encourage people to wash their hands with soap at critical times such as after using the toilet or before contact with food.

Dr. Abba said for hand washing to be effective, it must be practised consistently.

He said, “Therefore, parents and teachers should cultivate the habit of hand washing from the early age and linked them unconsciously into the children as everyday activities in their life time.”

“Good hand washing is the first line  spread of many illness- from common cold to serious infections such as meningitis, the flu, brochiotis, hepatitis A, and most type of infectious diarrhoea and also reduces the rate of immortality arising from these diseases”.

“The few seconds you spend at the sink could save you trips to doctor’s office.”

Some of the students appreciated the NOA for the sensitisation and promised to keep washing their hands as directed.

  • Anti-malaria campaign hits schools

The fight to eradicate malaria received a boost in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as ExxonMobil took the campaign to secondary schools.

Working alongside its partners, National Basketball Association (NBA) and Africare, students for days were fought on how disease burden in the country could be drastically reduced through effective engagement of needed resources, habits and personnel.

The groups use sports (basketball) and other learning skills to train students across the nation’s capital on how various strategies could be used not only to sensitise, but defeat ailments that have snuffed lives out of many citizens, and currently constitute threats to the lives of others.

Malaria was highlighted at the event as one of the ailments receiving attention for elimination. The project is being funded by ExxonMobil, while NBA offers the sports component.

Africare, a partner that works on health component of the project, has contributed through distribution of “thousands” of mosquito nets and conducted malaria tests for many people across the country, said Country Director, Africare Nigeria Dr. Orode Doherty.

Doherty said the project was yielding desired results third year after it was launched, and that it would be expanded to all parts of the country.

“Africare is working in 15 states in Nigeria. So, as an organization, scalability is not an issue for us. We are already working in multi-million dollar opportunities. So, scaling is not an issue. We are ready to go. We are working with the ministry. We’ve shown them what we are doing. this is an opportunity for them to come in and see what we do with this children so that we can expand it to other schools in the country, target children who are out-of-school, targeting children who are in IDP camps, children who do not have opportunity to be educated among others,” she stated.

Director of malaria project, Africare, Dr Patrick Adah, said the organization implements different malaria projects in the country and helps to coordinate those projects in various locations in the country.

“Malaria is endemic. What that means is that the disease is with us here. Over the years, the disease has been ravaging, killing so many children, and even adults in a very large proportion. The Federal Ministry of Health under the auspices of the National Malaria Programme, with all the malaria partners in the country are putting efforts together to ensure that we burden of malaria, and even to eliminate malaria in the country. But, because the disease is endemic, it takes a long time and serious efforts to ensure that malaria is completely eliminated. But, over the years, efforts are being made to control malaria, and we are making progress,” he said.

The event featured former NBA player, KelennaAzubuike and other notable figures in basketball in the country.

  • ‘No Fighting’ campaign ‘ll deepen insurance’

African Reinsurance Corporation (AfricaRe) ‘No Fighting’ campaign is to  sensitise the public on the benefits of insurance policies.

Unveiling the campaign at its head office in Lagos, the firm’s Deputy Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Ken Aghoghovbia, said the campaign was imperative since many Nigerians still dìd not take insurance policies.

He said in spite of Nigeria’s huge population, insurance penetration remained very low.

According to him, while insurance penetration rate is 0.3 per cent in Nigeria, of about 12 million vehicles on the roads, only 4.3 million have genuine insurance certificates.

Reiterating the corporations’ resolve to foster the development of the insurance and reinsurance industry in Africa, Aghoghovbia expressed the hope that the campaign would go a long way in educating Nigerians on the benefits of policies.

“The campaign aims at developing an integrated behavioural change to enhance the effort made by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigerian Insurance Association to bridge the knowledge, experience and perception gaps in the nation’s insurance market.

“AfricaRe decided to invest in creating awareness about the insurance industry because there is a dearth of knowledge among the general populace,” he said.

  • Kashamu flays ‘campaign of calumny’

    Kashamu flays ‘campaign of calumny’

The senator representing Ogun East, Buruji Kashamu, yesterday flayed ‘’the campaign of calumny’’ against him over the next governorship election in Ogun State.

Kashamu, in a statement, accused a member of the House of Representatives, Ladi Adebutu and a lawyer, Yemi Oke, of “using the old worn-out tales that are too familiar, as published in some media reports and advert published on August 4 and 5,  2016, in The Nation and Punch ”.

The senator said: “Since they know they cannot substantiate allegations against me, they chose to hide under an amorphous and self-styled Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), known as Advocacy for Integrity and Economic Development (AIED). I know this is a classic case of the voice of Jacob and the hand of Esau.

“The reason for the latest onslaught is because Adebutu has declared interest to be governor of Ogun State in 2019 and he strangely believes that I am an obstacle to his getting control of the party structure that must be crushed.

“Thankfully, Nigeria is well on its way to probity, lawfulness and fairness. There is no remote possibility that we could someday decline to the throes of a Banana republic where monkeys and kangaroos tumble justice. Our democracy is resilient and in safe hands guided by the rule of law. Thus, despite the scheming and shenanigans of my political opponents, I remain hopeful and confident in our justice system and the commitment of the Federal Government to defend the rights of Nigerians.

“By the grace of the Almighty Allah Subhana wa tala, I am an employer of labour and an empowerer of people from all walks of life. I am visible. Certainly, I am not an outlaw, as the courts, both at home and abroad, have found that I do not have anything to do with the allegation(s). The Nigeria of today is walking the same path with the bastion of democracy, custodians of the rule of law and defenders of human rights as the United Kingdom and the United States of America.  Even by its (the group’s) admission and in its averments, there were two extradition proceedings against me in the United Kingdom, “…both unsuccessful, ending finally in January 2003 when the judge refused to order him extradited”.  The law forbids double jeopardy. If they know that I had faced extradition proceedings twice, so which campaign of calumny are they embarking “upon?”

He went on: “What is more, the Constitution is the grundnorm of a country and democracy. And Section 36 (9) of the 1999 Constitution says: ‘No person who shows that he has been tried by any court of competent jurisdiction or tribunal for a criminal offence and either convicted or acquitted shall again be tried for that offence or for a criminal offence having the same ingredients as that offence save upon the order of a superior court.’”

He declared that he is not wanted anywhere.

“I have not committed any offence to warrant such. In life, events happen in ways that are beyond human comprehension. Such events will test our resolve to fight and overcome challenges. But, one thing that is certain is that the truth will always prevail.

“I have never lived in or visited the United States all my life. I was wrongly introduced into an indictment and was arrested and tried for it in the United Kingdom at the instance of the government of the United States. After an extradition trial that lasted four years, the British judiciary – one of the best in the world – ruled in my favour twice and released me.

“The British court did not merely find that the evidence did not establish a prima facie case against me; the court positively found that it was another person (not me) that committed the offence and proceeded to describe the person in its judgment. That judgment was not and has not been appealed till date…”

  • ‘PDP didn’t pay to use public schools for campaign’

‘PDP didn’t pay to use public schools for campaign’

Edo State Government has described as untrue allegations by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that it refunded money paid by the People’s Democratic Party for the use of public school fields and other public places for electioneering campaigns.

It also said no school head was summoned by Governor Adams Oshiomhole for allowing the PDP to use Okpujie primary school in Uromi for its campaigns in Edo Central Senatorial district.

State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chris Nehikhare, had accused the state government of denying them the use public property for its campaigns.

But State Commissioner for Education, Gideon Obhakhan, in a chat with newsmen said it is difficult to refund any money paid into the state Internally Generated Revenue account.

Obhakhan challenged the PDP to show evidence of its application and payment for the use of school field and other public places across the state.

He said the APC led administration believed in equity and fairness and as such gives equal opportunity to everybody in the state to use public facilities.

The Education Commissioner said there was no evidence to show that the PDP paid for the use of any school field and was denied access.

According to him, “As far as they apply, they pay and it is approved, they are allowed to use it. There is no evidence from our record to show that the PDP paid and they were denied. There was no request from them to use any primary school and there was nothing that was denied. They have used other primary schools and there was no denial.

“To say a school head was sanctioned is the figments of their own imagination because there is no record to show that anybody has been sanctioned or queried for allowing use of Okpujie Primary school because there is no reason for denying them the use of the school.

“Their allegation is not going to prevent APC from winning the election. They are free to use any school as far as they follow due process. I heard they said they paid and somebody refunded the money. How do you get money from the IGR account as if it is one man’s business. Raising sentiment in the public will not help their course because their past government was a failed one. They think the only way to gather support was to create media hype and sentiments from the public.”

  • ‘Nobody is sponsoring my campaign’

An All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ondo State, Chief Olusola Oke, at the weekend, debunked the rumour that he was being sponsored by a third party.

Besides, he faulted insinuations that he was planning to defect to another party.

He lamented that with the APC primary election drawing nearer in the state, the spate of “mudslinging and lies-trading” has increased.

The lawyer hinged the development on the struggle by many aspirants to secure the backing of the party leaders to win the primary.

This, the governorship aspirant believed, increased their desperation and propaganda.

A statement by his media assistant, Rotimi Ogunleye, said: “Naturally, Chief Oke would not have responded to the report because by his nature, he does not discuss or respond to minds that take pleasure in constant lies-telling.

“He would not think the lies in such story could profit from believability because it lacks substance. How can one person be sponsoring three aspirants from two different political parties?

“Oke, in his entire political life, has never been a betrayal or found to have commercialised the struggle of his people.

“Those who follow his politics would know that he is not a pretender. He honours his words and lives by it. The struggle to liberate Ondo State is a commitment he has undertaken and he is prepared to give everything into it, including his hard-earned resources.

“This is his belief and we can say it with utmost modesty that his campaign is not on the bill of anybody. Apart from the obvious fact that Oke’s campaign is modest and has benefited from the goodwill of the masses, it is bearable and he has been financing it from his limited resources.”

The statement maintained that the report that Oke was being sponsored was cooked up by desperate politicians and their cohorts.

It said the impression created that the Presidency and the APC national leaders have adopted a particular aspirant as the party’s flagbearer was untrue.
