He said sharing unverified information could be injurious to their society and Nigeria as a whole.

The CDS gave the warning on Thursday when he visited the Obi Eze Ana-Uku, Eze Igulube of Omor, in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He made the disclosure at the closing ceremony of CDS Joint Task Force Commanders Conference at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.

Gen. Musa said the successful operation has left wanted terrorists leader Bello Turji in disarray, desperately seeking escape routes as pressure mounts.

According to him, troops under the ongoing Operation “Show No Mercy” eliminated the two notorious bandit leaders, Kachalla Gwammade and Kachalla Shehu, along with four of their foot soldiers in Ruwan Dawa village in Maru local government area of Zamfara State.

Kachalla Gwammade, a key terror commander, operated from a base in Chabi village, northeast of Maru Local Government Area of the state.

He was also a relative of the late Kachalla Sani Black, a notorious warlord recently eliminated in ongoing military operations.

“The insights provided by our distinguished guest speakers brought out pertinent areas on the strategic imperatives of a whole of society approach. Furthermore, it gave our field commanders the opportunity to update us all on their operational activities and challenges in their various theatres of operation.

“We were also privileged to listen to the perspectives of former Joint Task Force Commanders, Service Chiefs and Chiefs of Defence Staffs. Sirs, your interventions, advises and guidance have been noted and will surely be imbibed in our ongoing and future endeavours.

“It is important to emphasize that the strength of our Joint Task Forces lies in our ability to operate as a cohesive and integrated force. Consequently, the collaboration and mutual support demonstrated during this conference must continue to guide our operations in the field.

Military to sue Reuters over false abortion allegations, says CDS

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has disclosed plans by the Nigerian military to initiate legal action against Reuters over a report alleging the forced termination of 10,000 pregnancies during counter-insurgency operations in the North East.

The controversial report, published in late 2022, accused the Nigerian military of running a secret abortion program targeting women impregnated by insurgents.

However, a 2024 investigation by the National Human Rights Commission cleared the military of any wrongdoing.

Expressing his displeasure, General Musa criticized Reuters for failing to retract the report or issue an apology, noting that it had unfairly tarnished the reputation of Nigeria and its armed forces.

“After one and a half years of investigation, it was found that it was a complete lie. I was expecting Reuters to come in and apologize for it, but they did nothing. They did not even respond. After maligning the whole country, they have shown no accountability. I think it’s very important that Nigeria takes up this issue,” he said.

Musa revealed that discussions had been held with the Attorney General of the Federation regarding legal proceedings.

“I’ve discussed with the Attorney General, and I think it’s important that Nigeria addresses this. We will not allow anyone to demoralize our troops or malign the country,” he said.

He also suggested that such allegations often surface as part of a broader effort to undermine the military’s achievements in combating terrorism.

“What we realise is that any time we’re making progress, international organizations take it upon themselves to demoralize the country and our troops. We have refused to be demoralized, and we will not be demoralized,” he added.

Airstrikes are conducted with accuracy, civilians not intentionally targeted — CDS

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa, has explained that the military follows strict protocols before executing any airstrike across the various theatres of operations.

Musa stated that the military conducts its airstrikes with precision, adding that civilians are not deliberately targeted.

Musa who was reacting to the recent accidental killing of 16 civilians in Zamfara on Saturday spoke during an interview on Arise News on Monday.

He said: ”The issue of the airstrikes is still the same. Before we conduct any airstrike, we follow up on movements. And I can tell you, when we do airstrikes, we do it with precision.”

Musa stated that secondary explosions in areas where insurgents store weapons and explosives could have affected the citizens.

He said: “Now we cannot rule out a secondary explosion. Why? Because again, within areas they have weapons, they have bombs, ammunition, and explosives that they keep there. So sometimes if it goes up, you cannot rule out the aspect that civilians might be affected.

“But we do not deliberately target the civilian population, we avoid it as much as possible. We have videos that we follow up before any strike is conducted.”

The CDS noted that the accidental killing allegations might be antics to demoralise troops, adding that most of the allegations come when the military is making headway.

He said: “Maybe a question we should ask is, when is it that while we are succeeding, that’s when you keep on hearing this accidental airstrike here and there? For us, I think this is just a way of demoralizing the troops, demoralizing our air force, and making it look as if we don’t know what we’re doing,” he explained.

Musa called for patience and cooperation in verifying such incidents, urging communities to allow military investigations before concluding the nature of any airstrike.

“Most times, when they say there is any airstrike before you go there, they tell you they buried the people. Why not wait, and then let’s also come and verify these issues?” he questioned.

CDS warns against trading with terrorists, bandits

    …assures improved security in 2025

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has issued a strong warning to citizens, cautioning them against engaging in any form of trading or transactions with terrorists, bandits, and other non-state actors.

This warning is crucial in light of reports that some unpatriotic elements have been trading with these groups, thereby sabotaging the efforts of the military and other security agencies.

The CDS’s warning serves as a timely reminder of the importance of prioritising national security and safety above personal interests or financial gain.

General Musa issued the warning on Wednesday, December 25, during an interview with journalists after visiting patients at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Medical Centre, as part of the Christmas celebrations which coincided with his birthday.

The Defence Chief stated that the military and other security agencies had made significant progress in the fight against terrorism and insecurity in 2024 and assured that more would be achieved in the coming year.

He said: “I think since we started to where we are today, there is a remarkable improvement in the security situation, and we are going to take that further. That is why I said next year is defining. This means that we will do everything possible to ensure that Nigeria is peaceful. We are going to put every effort in to ensure that we continue to live in peace. It’s not automatic, but I know if we have the cooperation of Nigerians, that is possible because God is with us always. We are going to make sure that Nigeria is better for everyone.

“The mistakes that were made in the past when this thing (terrorism/banditry) started were that we did not nip it in the bud. We allowed it to get to where it is. But thank God everybody is putting their hands together and we are very happy Nigerians are warming up. We are getting a lot of support from Nigerians, a lot of prayers, and a lot of information on things that are happening everywhere. We must continue to do that.

“I want to also call on those few who think they are making money by trading with those terrorists and bandits. Those terrorists and bandits have no respect for anybody. Once you think you are trading with them, they are going to come after you. If they don’t come after you, they will come after either your relations – your brother, your sister, your wife, or your husband. So, please, nobody should trade with those individuals.

“If we do not encourage them, and we do not trade with them, they will not survive. That is the important message we are conveying.”

General Musa said he was at the medical centre to support and pray for sick soldiers and their families, as well as the medical personnel whom he said were doing their best in taking care of the patients.

He said the new DHQ hospital would be completed next year, which he promised would provide improved medical services to the members of the Armed Forces and their families.

He also urged Nigerians to abide by the teachings of love, forgiveness and togetherness as exemplified by Jesus Christ.

The CDS, in a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brig-Gen Tukur Gusau, on Wednesday, December 24, noted that the birth of Jesus Christ was evidently the heralding of good tidings and hope to the hopeless.

The statement said: “The CDS noted that the year has been eventful, dotted with few incidents. Despite all these, Almighty God has been gracious and merciful unto us as we are alive to witness another Christmas celebration.

“We do remember with a heavy heart that some of our colleagues who started the year with us, lost their lives in the process of keeping our nation safe from all forms of insecurity occasioned by the activities of terrorists, bandits and other non-state actors.

“As a mark of respect to our colleagues who paid the supreme price, the CDS urged our troops to ensure the year 2025 is defined by positive changes in the security narratives in all our theatres of operations.”

CDS sets high bar for newly decorated Major Generals

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has urged newly decorated Major Generals to make 2025 a determining year in the fight against terrorism and insecurity in the country.

This call to action comes as the military continues to grapple with the challenges of terrorism and insecurity in various parts of the country.

The CDS, who spoke at the decoration ceremony of 35 newly promoted Army Major Generals at the Command Officers Mess in Abuja, said their promotion to the enviable rank of Major General was a clear indication that there is reward for hard work in the Armed Forces.

By making 2025 a determining year in the fight against terrorism and insecurity in the country, the CDS was setting a high bar for the newly decorated Major Generals and the military as a whole.

He said:”We have been dealing with insurgencies, terrorism, banditry for 15, 16 years and still counting and I think it is high time that we dealt with it finally and I know we can do it. So I want to call on all of us to put on our thinking caps and make that great sacrifice that 2025 should be a determining year for the armed forces of Nigeria.

“Having reached the peak of your careers, always remember that the Nigerian Army and the armed forces will continue to rely on the leadership and expertise of individuals like you to safeguard our country and its people. Nigeria is looking up to us. We must do everything to defend democracy in Nigeria and across the sub-region. It is a duty and a task for all of us to perform.

“Our nation is going through so much and it takes men of steel and character for us to succeed and that is what we aim for. The rank of Major General signifies not only a high level of responsibility but also a deep sense of duty towards our country and its people. I therefore, congratulate you and your families on achieving this laudable feat. Today is, however, not only a day for celebration but also a clarion call to the tasks ahead.”

The CDS charged the newly decorated Major Generals and other officers of the Armed Forces to remain committed in the task ahead, not thinking of self but the nation, and uphold democratic governance and loyalty to constituted authority.

Gen. Musa also charged them to improve the welfare of the troops under their command. He cautioned them to be “mindful of their actions and careful with your words and utterances” and most importantly key into the vision of the Chief of Army Staff and that of the Armed Forces orces.

“I therefore urge you to continue to uphold the highest standard of professionalism and patriotism and to foster strong collaborations with your colleagues to achieve our national security objectives,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen Olufemi Oluyede, reminded the newly promoted Major Generals that with higher rank comes higher responsibilities.

“From now onwards, more accountabilities will be required and demanded of you. As Major Generals, what you do or fail to do matters a lot to the system and particularly national security. Therefore, I charge you all to always keep your new status in mind to avoid embarrassing the military establishment and profession and particularly to justify the confidence that has been imposed on you,” he said.

NYCOP in a statement signed in Port, Harcourt, Rivers State, by its national oresident, Olayinka Teidor, said Musa achieved giant strides in the war against economic sabotage through deployment of kinetic and non-kinetic measures.

Teidor said by stabilizing Niger Delta and demonstrating the political will to fight crimes, the Federal government and the CDS has prepared a conducive atmosphere to attract local and foreign investments to the region.

Teidor expressed confidence that the ongoing military operations would sanitise the region, increase government revenue and bring employment opportunities for the youths.

He said: “The Major General Jimoh Jamiu led special monitoring team has brought about relative zero perpetration of the hitherto oil theft activities that were  prevalent in the Niger Delta to a record low level.

  • CDS commends human right panel’s verdict on alleged rape, killings

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has hailed the outcome of the Special Independent Human Rights Investigative Panel into alleged rape, systematic abortions, torture and extra judicial killings by soldiers fighting terrorism in the North East.

General Musa commended the seven-man panel for “painstakingly carrying out a thorough job” since its inauguration by the Nigerian Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The NHRC in February 2023 instituted a special investigative panel to probe a report by an international news agency, Reuters, that the military ran a secret abortion programme in its fight against terrorists in the North East in the last 10 years, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) allegations of mass killing by the military in Marte, Borno State.

The seven-member panel was chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge Abdu Aboki and includes a retired major general, a representative from the Nigerian Bar Association and an expert in obstetrics and gynaecology.

The Reuters had reported in 2022 that the military abortion programme involved terminating at least 10,000 pregnancies among women and girls, many of whom had been kidnapped and raped by rebel fighters.

After two years of investigation, the panel on Friday indicted the military over alleged mass infanticide and other killings at Abisari in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, in 2016.

It, however, absolved the military of allegations of mass abortion made against it by Reuters.

The panel said there was no evidence that the military ran a secret programme terminating at least 10,000 pregnancies of freed captives of Boko Haram terrorists as claimed by the news agency.

The panel recommended compensation to the victims of the killings in Abisare and prosecution of officers suspected to be involved.

NHRC Senior Human Rights Adviser, Hilary Ogbonna, said they interviewed 199 witnesses to get testimonies to arrive at their findings and conclusion.

Reacting to the verdict in a statement, the CDS hailed the panel for exonerating the military from indictments by Reuters and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

He said: “No amount of false accusations will distract the Armee Force of Nigeria from exercising its constitutional mandate of protecting the territorial integrity of the nation.”

The statement reads: “The Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Gwabin Musa has hailed the Special Independent Investigative Panel on Human Rights Violations in Counter Insurgency in the North East for exonerating the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) from indictments by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Reuters regarding allegations on forceful abortions and other infractions in the North East.

“It could be recalled that the report of the panel specifically stated that the allegations of systematic abortions, torture, rape and extra juducial killings levelled against the AFN were false.

“The CDS therefore commends the 7- man panel led by Justice Abdu Aboki (rtd) for painstakingly carrying out a thorough job since its inauguration in March 2023 by the Nigerian Human Rights Commission.

“General Musa wishes to seize this opportunity to reaffirm the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the defence of human rights and resolve to ensure peace reign in the country.

“According to the Defence Cheif “no amount of false accusations will distract the AFN from exercising its constitutional mandate of protecting the territorial integrity of the nation”.
