Despite crashing out of the 9th African  Nations Championships  in the East Africa,  Super Eagles B captain Nduka Junior is happy  that Nigeria  ended their drought  with a 2-0  thrashing of Congo  in their last Group D  match played in Dar es Salam on Tuesday.

Following their  previous two losses to Senegal (1-0) and Sudan (4-0), the coach Eric Sekou Chelle-led side had only their pride to play for on Tuesday  and they took-out Congo with two second half goals by Anas Yusuf and Sikiru Alimi.

Victory means  the  Super Eagles B (3 points)   came third behind Sudan (5 points)  and  Senegal  (5 points) that picked the two available  tickets from Group B while Congo came fourth (2 points).

“We’re happy we won, at least we’re not fourth on the table,” said Junior.in a post-match interview. “At the same time, we’re not happy we’re out of the competition, it’s a sad thing for us. We’re quite unfortunate, that’s what football is – anything can happen.”

The 22-year-old who also doubles as Remo Stars’ captain , attributed Super Eagles B’s  elimination to mistakes made in the first two matches, which they were able to correct in the final game.

“We lost two games due to mistakes, and I think in this last game, we were able to correct it,” he  added.

Meanwhile,  the CAF  Technical Study Group (TSG) for the CHAN 2024, has rated the standard of the  competition  even as they tipped  Group B surprise table topper, Sudan, as one of the of the stand-out teams  of the group phase.

Former Ethiopian national team coach Abraham Mebratu and ex-South African international Mark Fish, both members of the competition’s TSG,   reportedly made the observations on Tuesday as guests  of leading Kenyan television station NTV to explore key technical insights on the group stage of the competition.

According to CAF Website, Fish noted a visible shift in how teams approach matches compared to the previous tournament.

“We are seeing a shift from the last CHAN where teams have been more proactive. Teams are now more attack-minded, with dynamic formations, and even defenders stepping up to act almost like midfielders,” Fish told NTV in Kenya.

This evolution has produced more goals. With 36 matches played, 74 goals have been scored—an average of two per game.

Burkina Faso’s 4-2 victory over the Central African Republic remains the highest-scoring match, while Sudan’s 4-0 triumph over Nigeria in Zanzibar is the biggest margin.

Mebratu  on the other hand, emphasized the improvement of East African teams, including Sudan, who have combined fitness with technical organization.

“The players are physically fit and play with very good technical and tactical ability. Their organization both in and out of possession has been really impressive,” he noted.

    By Julius Okorie

The Imama Amakapabo led side beat Hawks of Togo 2-0 in front of a capacity crowd but it was not enough to turn the table against the West African brothers who had defeated the Eagles 4-1 in the first leg.

Sikiru Alimi scored a brace in the 10th and 62nd minutes of the match but that was all the firing powers of the Eagles could produce till the end of 90 minutes.

Victorious Togo side sealed victory in the first leg at home

The two legged encounter thus ended on 4-3 aggregate in favour of the Togolese.  The Eagles only needed un-replied 3-0 victory to earn a place in the championship which unfortunately they could not achieve.

Nigeria finished second in the last edition in Morocco losing 4-0 at the Complexe Mohamed V in Casablanca to the hosts.

Nigeria has featured at the championship reserved exclusively for home based players in the continent three times, finishing third place in her debut edition in 2014 in South Africa, crashing out in the Group Stage at the 2016 edition in Rwanda and finishing runners up in the 2018 edition in Morocco.

  • Scandalous Loss: CHAN Eagles underrated Togo, soccer fans insist

Despite varied explanations given by the coaching crew and players following their 4-1 defeat by Togo, soccer fans who spoke with The Nation  Sunday, insist the CHAN Eagles underrated their opponents.

Though most of the fans interviewed were more interested in talking about the Chelsea versus Liverpool tie which they described as Super Sunday fixture, the few who spoke on the Togo/Nigeria tie said the Eagles took the match for granted.

    Victorious Hawks of Togo

“The truth is that they underrated their opponents. How can you explain a 4-1 loss to Togo, If you lose by a lone goal or even two goals you can begin to think of turning the table in the second leg, but where do you start with a 4-1 loss.

Does this look like a team that can score six goals in the return leg?” they queried.

Nigeria recorded the worst result in the seven Championship of African Nations qualifiers played on Sunday. Nigeria, Cote d Ivoire and Ghana were the major talking points among analysts at the end of regulation time.

Cote d Ivoire lost 2-0 to Niger while Ghana lost by a lone goal to Burkina Fasso. In other matches of the Championship played on Sunday, Rwanda beat Ethiopia 1-0, Congo DR pulled a draw against hosts Central African Republic while Equatorial Guinea held Congo to a 2-2 draw.

Imama Amakpakabo boxed into a corner

Prior to the match Nigerian Ambassador to Togo His Excellency Joseph Olusola Iji had charged the team to go for victory to make the second leg less stressful adding “Be Business-like for the love of the country and Sports”

Eagles will need to unleash all the arsenals in the armory in the second leg billed for October 17 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba if they are move to next stage.
