Eagles hosting off indefinitely, may get 1st October

It is no longer news that the hosting of CHAN Eagles will no longer hold as planned tomorrow February 28, with fillers indicating that the President’s tight schedule is responsible for the latest indefinite postponement.

The original idea for tomorrow was to have the team received during the Federal Executive  Council Meeting Wednesday which incidentally will equally not hold.

The CHAN Eagles led by Coach Salisu Yusuf played in the finals of championship in Casablanca Morocco settling for the second place behind eventual winners and host Morocco, the first time Nigeria will be making it to that level.

There are however strong indication that the team may not be hosted till after the world cup in July. A reliable source who would not want to be named, gave the hint noting that there are important matters that need urgent attention for now.

The source said to have the ear of the presidency put up superior argument against’ piecemeal hosting of national teams’

“There are so many things requiring the president’s attention right now. The CHAN Eagles did well and deserve to be hosted, we have those who represented the country for the first time at the winter Olympics in Korea, and the Commonwealth Games is around the corner just like the world cup in Russia. Wouldn’t it be better to have our athletes compete in all these outings and then we sit down and host them all,” the source queried.

Should the Presidency buy the idea then no hosting of athletes will take place until after the world cup.  The source we further gather, even floated the idea of hosting all the athletes on October 1st, adding “In recent times October 1st which is our independent Day has been on the quiet side, we could add colour to it by using it to host all our athletes who represented the country in all the championships”

Some sports stakeholders however reasoned that the postponement may not be unconnected with the threat by Wrestlers to boycott the forth coming Commonwealth Games Gold Coast Australia over their non recognition by government.  The wrestlers had cited the proposed reception of the CHAN Eagles and as well as recognition of the Basketball team adding that it appears that they are being treated as second class citizens after winning the African Wrestling Champions in Port Harcourt aside from other laurels they had won before then.

The government may have bought the idea to postpone the reception to avoid controversies that would draw negative comments at this time.

The CHAN Eagles arrived the country on the 6th February after playing in the Final February 4th. The team was initially billed to be hosted 7th February but the date was shifted to 14th February then to 28 before the latest indefinite postponement.

  • What has supporters club got to do with it?

What has supporters club got to do with it?

Hopefully come Wednesday February 14th, the CHAN Eagles will be hosted by the government to officially appreciate their effort at the just concluded 5th edition of the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) in Morocco.

The Salisu Yusuf tutored side ably assisted by former Rangers coach and now Elkanemi Warriors of Borno sweat merchant, Imama Amakakpabo, went to morocco, saw but did they conquer?

Yes and No. Yes in the sense that they fought their way to the final for the first time, thus posting a better record from our initial first round and third place outings respectively.

That no doubt is a commendable outing even though a school of thought believes that on that rainy final of February 4th in Casablanca, the team had every opportunity to turn the table if they had gone the extra mile.

Another school of thought dismissed excuses bothered on rain, cold, general weather condition and the effect of having to play at all the four venues of Tangier, Agadir, Marakech and Casablanca compared to their final opponents who had the pleasure of playing all their matches in Casablanca.

To proponents of this school of thought, any team that qualifies for a championship like CHAN, Nations Cup, World cup, CAF

Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup etc should be prepared to play at various venues with its attendant challenges after all that is what competition is all about.

So it is either you play to win or lose since every competition is challenged by the same scenario.

Let’s simply say congratulates the Eagles and then focus on making amends for the future.

However the relevance or otherwise of the Supporters club and the cold war between it and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) came to the fore just before the final.

The supporters could not make it to Morocco and were bitter about it, though they were on hand to welcome the team on return after the final.  The question is, would the presence of the Supporters club have made a difference?  Could they have served as a ginger for a last minute turn around?

The questions were prompted by outburst by President General of the club, Rafiu Ladipo who accused the present Amaju Pinnick led board of the NFF of having a disdain for the supporters club and doing everything within its powers to strangle it.

According to him the board has total disdain for the club and is plotting and praying to see the club bite the dust. The NFF he further alleged scuttled the club’s plan to be in morocco by painting the black, thus making it difficult for its members to get passage to the championship.

Speaking on Raypower just before the final, an angry Ladipo said the NFF said they cannot guarantee anybody. Hear him “We don’t need their guarantee.  They should leave us alone.  Supporters club has been there for 62 years.  We have worked with all past Presidents of NFF chairmen of NFA, this present board of NFF is not happy that we are united and is bent on destroying the club,” he submitted.

The Super Eagles have qualified for the World Cup in Russia and the Glass House taken by its words is doing everything to ensure that the usual squabbles over payment of bonuses and allowances which sometimes takes the shine off our participation and even affects performance indirectly are reduced in Russia if not eliminated.

Will the cold war between the supporters club and the NFF end before heading to Russia or will it like a virus to be allowed to grow into an unwanted distraction?

Prior to this NFF/Supporters club brouhaha, the supporters club itself has reportedly been in crisis with Rev Samuel Ikpea and Vincent Okumagba both laying claims to being in charge.  While the Okumagba faction supported by younger ones want a change and departure from the 20 dominance by Rafiu Ladipo, the Ikpea faction want the status quo to remain. Perhaps this explains why the NFF is keeping the club at arms length in the hope that its crisis does not affect the Super Eagles and perhaps by extension the country’s image abroad, just perhaps.

All attempts made to get the Glass House reaction to this fresh allegation by the Supporters club proved abortive as calls and test message sent to the spokesman of the football ruling house went unanswered.

The no response posture of the football house could be well be interpreted that it does not wish to join issues with the supporters club.

Be that as it may, the manner in which the Super Eagles qualified for the World Cup in Russia has been likened to sweet melody by some Nigerians and they are hoping that the melody would continue.

Whether Eagles fly in Russia or not is not the issue for now, they just want to enjoy the melody while it lasts and so any distraction from any quarter will be unacceptable. What this means is that the players who are the main actors of the Mundial, the NFF who administer the game in the country and the supporters club who pride themselves as being able to produce ginger to boost the fighting spirit when the going gets tough  must all be at peace with themselves for the good of all.

The Nation’s image has always been a source of worry, interestingly sports has often been used to launder it especially when our athletes do well in international competitions.

Such intermittent goodwill should not be dented by any department or group which explains why any squabble no matter how little it is considered to be, must be addressed before heading to Russia.

Nigerians deserve to be spared unpleasant distractions during the World cup.

Ezeji cautions Eagles against wasting chances

CHAN Eagles currently competing in Morocco must learn to take their chances if they are to go beyond the Group stage.

Veteran of the Nigerian premier league Victor Ezeji who made the submission in reaction to the team’s first outing against Amavubis of Rwanda Monday, noted that the Salisu Yusuf led side were guilty of creating chances which unfortunately they could not convert. While observing that the team played under pressure, the former Sharks and Enyimba forward however opined that it is possible to overcome the pressure which he added is normal as far as Nigeria is concerned.

“As a Nigerian already you are under pressure because we always want to win so definitely they are playing under pressure but they can overcome the pressure, be more coordinated in their next match that is the only way they can emerge from the group,” he said

Eagles pulled an unexpected draw against Rwanda firing as many as 23 shots in the game with just three on target. Ezeji further advised the Eagles not to allow the victory Libya earned against Equatorial Guinea to distract them, adding that they stand a good chance of winning with extra commitment.

“If we had won perhaps we would have been complacent even in the next match but now that the team lost and Libya won, it is likely that the Libyans may want to take things easy as group leaders so we must play to win and not allow the fact that Libya leads the group to affect our performance,” he submitted

CHAN Eagles coach Salisu Yusuf agrees that his boys created chances but failed to convert.  He however expressed hope that the boys will be more purposeful in the next match against Libya billed for January 19.”We created chances but failed to score. If we keep creating chances and hopefully take them, we can beat any team in this tournament. “he added

Emeka Ogbuchi, Kingsley Eduwo, Okechukwu Gabriel and Sunday Faleye all found the net in the course of the tie, a feat which the coach and his technical crew will be hoping they can replicate when the battle for supremacy begins in the Moroccan City of Tangier where the Eagles have been drawn to face 2016 hosts Rwanda, Libya and Equatorial Guinea

CHAN is a football tournament which was first announced on 11 September 2007.administered by the Confederation of African Football and played between the best national teams of Africa, exclusively featuring players plying their trade in the local leagues of the continent

While the 2014 and 2016 editions were hosted by South Africa and Rwanda respectively with Libya and DR Congo respectively.

While Libya beat Libya beat Ghana 4-3 on penalty to emerge champions in 2014, DR Congo handed hard fighting Mali a 3-0 defeat at the Amahoro stadium to clinch the title in 2016.

Only DR Congo have won the title twice 2009 and 2016.

Coach Salisu and his crew are expected to announce the final 23 players to hit Morocco any moment from now.  The deadline for submission of final list is January 3rd and Eagles are expected to depart same day for Tangier via Casablanca.

The host nation, Morocco is in Group A with Mauritania, Guinea and Sudan. The four countries will do battle in Casablanca.

Cote d’lvoire, Namibia, Uganda and Zambia will slug it out in Marrakech in Group B.

Agadir will host Group D teams which includes Burkina Faso, Angola , Congo and Cameroon.

Morocco and Mauritania open hostilities in the opening match at the newly refurbished Mohammed V Complex in Casablanca on January 13.

    At the last edition, the Super Eagles failed to make it beyond the group stage in Rwanda but the coach Salisu who was also part of the technical crew then led by former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh, is hoping that his effort and mother luck can turn things around for the Eagles in Morocco. The coach only few days back revealed that it is becoming difficult to off load eight out of the 31 players in camp as the players have all given a good account of themselves adding however;

“We have no choice but to comply with the 23-man list approved for the competition”

  • CHAN Eagles to call up Okpotu for WAFU Cup

CHAN Eagles to call up Okpotu for WAFU Cup

SCORENigeria has yet again scooped that Lobi Stars striker Anthony Okpotu, who has now scored 17 goals in the NPFL this season, will be one of several fresh call-ups by the home-based Eagles for next month’s WAFU Cup in Ghana.

“Okpotu is one of the players who will be called up for the WAFU Cup. He has continued to score goals in the NPFL and deserves his chance,” a top team official told  SCORENigeria.

SCORENigeria has first reported that there will be a major shake-up of squad for the CHAN qualifiers with several new call-ups to strengthen the team for the WAFU Cup.

Okpotu scored his third hat-trick this season as Lobi Stars edged past El Kanemi Warriors 3-2 on Sunday at home.

He is now just a goal shy of leading scorer Stephen Odey of MFM FC.

He was overlooked for the CHAN 2018 final playoff against Benin, which Nigeria won 2-1 on aggregate to qualify for a third straight CHAN.

He has previously played in Libya.

The sub-regional WAFU Cup in Ghana will kick off on September 9.

CHAN Eagles Set for Test Matches

Coach Salisu Yusuf has said the CHAN Eagles will this week play series of warm-up matches against local clubs.

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, as gathered, will join the team’s training camp in Kano also this week.

“We will play some friendlies against some local teams later this week to ascertain how much the players have understood what we have tried to teach them so far,” coach Yusuf said.

“The opposition is not what really matters. What is most important is what my team show during these test games.”

Yusuf also confirmed that Rohr is expected to be part of the CHAN Eagles training soon.

“He will be with us but we have not agreed on a date yet,” he disclosed.

The training camp reopen today after NPFL matches at the weekend.

Benin, who will battle Nigeria for a place in next year’s CHAN in Kenya, have scheduled a friendly against Cote d’Ivoire in Cotonou this weekend preparatory to the CHAN playoff.

  • CHAN 2018: Competitive matches good for our preparation -Yusuf

CHAN 2018: Competitive matches good for our preparation -Yusuf

CHAN Eagles coach Salisu Yusuf says preparation for the Continental show billed for Kenya in January should go beyond mere training but also includes competitive and shape up matches to test the players all round readiness.

Yusuf who gave the players in camp blanket approval to go and play for their teams this weekend said playing competitive matches for their clubs is as a matter of fact part of the training for the forthcoming championship adding that Nigeria is determined to post a better outing in Nairobi.

“We are in camp yes but we need to combine training with competitive matches which is why we released them to go and play for their clubs this weekend. It is all part of the training and shape up for the forthcoming championship. Don’t forget that they are professionals, the more the play and train, the better the get,” he enthused

Yusuf who was part of the Sunday Oliseh led technical crew that exited the championship in the quarterfinals at the 2016 edition in Rwanda, insists that Super Eagles stand a good chance of re-taking the driver’s seat in African football, describing the period the country has failed to measure up as one of those temporary setbacks associated with the highly competitive game.

Yusuf only few days back, named Ifeanyi Uba safehand Ikechukwu Ezenwa who incidentally was in goal for the Eagles in Rwanda, captain of the team.

Eagles will tackle Squirrels of Benin Republic at the Stade de l’Amitié in the first leg of the qualifiers on August 11 with the return leg billed the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano a week later.

The Squirrels made a tomfoolery of permutations by some analysts that they will be blown away by the Hawks of Togo, when they beat the Hawks 9-8 on penalties.  They had earlier held Hawks to a 1-1 Lomé before consolidating at home.

While some soccer fans in Nigeria have expressed optimism that the Eagles will fly over the Squirrels, others however warned against treating them with kid gloves to avoid what they have dubbed unexpected upset.

Don’t waste this opportunity Ezeji tells CHAN Eagles

Players who have been invited to Eagles camp ahead of CHAN qualifiers have been told to put in their very best as the opportunity given to them does not always come on a platter.

Veteran of the Nigeria league Victor Ezeji who gave the charge, opined that the nation boasts of abundant talents many of who are struggling to have recognition despite their impressive skills. The clamor to have more of the local league playersinto the main super Eagles  begins with the players ability to prove himself describing the CHAN platform as the ultimate opportunity.

“You must understand that any list released by the coach will definitely be a subject of debate. It is natural and there is no way every player can be on the list.  But what is important is that those who have been invited must see this as a rare opportunity that should not be wasted. There are always calls for more home based players to be included in the main national team, that will become inevitable if players who have this kind of opportunity to do all they can to prove themselves,” he said

The former Club Africain striker expressed optimism that Nigeria will do well in the 2018 CHAN to be hosted by Kenya but insisted that it will require hard work as there are no more minnows in football.

“Nigeria remains a formidable force in football no doubt and we can always achieve whatever goal we set for ourselves but we must work hard and avoid taking any team for granted because there are no minnows anymore,” he added

Ezeji who was dubbed the most successful player of the Nigeria football league before he retired, won back to back CAF Champions league with Enyimba in 2003 and 2004.  He played for six clubs viz Sharks, Dolphins, Eagles Cement, Heartland, Enyimba and Sunshine Stars in the course of his career.

THANKGOD TO CHAN EAGLES: Overun Guinea with goals

Enyimba’S new player, Ike ThankGod has turned prayer warrior ahead of  the Eagles tie against Guinea on Tuesday in Rabavu. Although the former Heartland ace, who recently pitched tent with the Aba landlords is not part of the Chan Eagles in Rwanda, his patrotic zeal will not allow him to face another side when his country men are battling for honours.

The former Warri Wolves player in a chat with  Sportinglife online, said only a win or at worse a draw can push the Eagles to the next stage.

“I am praying for the team, we just have to win that game against Guinea or at worse pull a draw,” he said

ThankGod, who is part of the Peoples Elephant squad currently in Kaduna for the first phase of the Super 4, thanked God that the recent attack on the team by dare devil armed robbers did not result in injuries .

“We are really grateful to God for saving our lives I pray God to give us peace and security in this country,” he added

Currently with a minor injury, ThankGod is hoping to be as fit as a fiddle to savour his new opportunity to team up with the two time champions league heroes to gun for a third title.

He, however, appealed to his former club, Warri Wolves to settle his unpaid sign on fees and bonus.

“They are oweing me sign on fees and  bonus. I believe a labourer deserves his wages and I would appreciate being paid according because I worked for it,”he said.
