CHAN: Nigeria defeats South Africa 3-1

Nigeria’s Super Eagles  again proved to be the jinx team for South Africa as they beat Bafana 3-1 to eliminate the CHAN hosts from the competition.
The Eagles finished second in Group A with six points from three matches, behind winners Mali, who recorded seven points.
Ejike Uzoenyi opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 22nd minute, when he connected Ifeanyi Ede’s well laid pass from the left.
Ede made it 2-0 for Nigeria with a 32nd minute penalty after Gbolahan Salami was brought down by South Africa goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs.
Nigeria goalkeeper Agbim denied South Africa a goal in the 61st minute, before Ejike Uzoenyi completed his brace in the 64th minute to give Nigeria 3-0 lead.
Bernard Parker scored South Africa’s consolation goal from the penalty spot in the 81st minutes after Ugonna Uzochukwu was adjudged to have brought down Matshego inside the 18-yard box.
Solomon Kwambe was red carded in the 74th for a second bookable offence, two minutes later South African’s Vuyo Mere was sent off as well for a foul on Gbolahan Salami.
South Africa started the game like house on fire getting the first shot at goal on target in the 5th minute, but Chigozie Agbim was on hand to make a save.
Agbim was on hand to make another save in the 9th minute. Enyimba striker Ifeanyi Ede failed to connect Azubuike Egwekwe’s cross in the 11th minute, his header in the 19th minute was well saved by South Africa keeper.
A minute later, Agbim make another save in the 20th minute to deny the Bafana Bafana.
Uzoenyi was denied a hat-trick when he hit the woodwork with a well taken half volley in the 70th minute.

CHAN: South Africa’s game massive – Keshi

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has predicted a big battle between his team and hosts South Africa in Sunday’s final Group A clash at the CHAN.

Nigeria currently lies in third position in the group with three points and needs to win to qualify for the quarterfinals, while South Africa only needs a draw to reach the knockout stage, MTNFootball.com reports.

A draw will also be sufficient for second-placed Mali against bottom team Mozambique, also on Sunday.

The teams last clashed in Durban last year in the Mandela Challenge with Nigeria 2-0 winners courtesy of a brace by Uche Nwofor.

“I expect a great game. South Africa would be South Africa and Nigeria would be Nigeria. The fans will enjoy themselves,” promised Keshi ahead of the crunch game.

Keshi disclosed that he may most likely start with the same team who began the Mozambique match, which Nigeria won after a disappointing loss to Mali in their opening game.

“Hopefully, we should be seeing the same squad that started against Mozambique. But I would have to decide that my starting line up by Sunday morning,” he said.

I had 27 girlfriends in school

Shortly after Nigeria defeated Mozambique 4-2 at the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa, head coach, Stephen Keshi cut the figure of a very happy and relieved man.

He had come under intense criticism after his team underperformed horribly against Mali in the opening game. Defeat against Mozambique would have spelt the end for the Super Eagles at the CHAN and the critics would have predictably been out in full force.

Nigeria won and Keshi smiled. He told the assembled media afterwards that: “I prime my work on the mental (aspect), which I do all the time…”.

Dr. Robinson Okosun is the hardworking psychologist of the Super Eagles whose invaluable work behind the scenes helps Keshi get the players in the right shape, mentally for the big games.

Okosun has worked with stellar names like Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Peter Odemwingie and was also part of the Super Eagles backroom staff as Nigeria won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Okosun is currently with the Nigeria squad as they try to reach the quarterfinals of the 2014 CHAN in South Africa.

He sat down with supersport.com and made startling revelations about Okocha, Kanu, Keshi, his love for piety and some of the best football moments in Nigeria’s football history.

    Who inspired you the most?

My parents. I came from a very poor background and my parents were not very educated.

My father, who dropped out of school, told me that I must work hard if I did not want to suffer in future. He did everything to see that I had the best education.

The best advice you have ever received?

Professor Femi Owolabi, who is now a lecturer in Botswana advised me to take education seriously.

I listened to him and I have not regretted it. He’s very proud of me today.

    Are you a good cook?

No, I am not and my wife cheats me a lot because of this.

My father once saw me in the kitchen with my elder sister when I was much younger. He screamed and asked me never to go there (kitchen) again as cooking was for women.

That aside, the nature of my job makes it impossible to do any kind of cooking because I am always travelling from one country to another.

If you were not involved in football….

I would have been a pastor. I love counselling people.

When I gained admission to the University of Ibadan to study Chemistry, my love for sports and charisma shone through.

I was always advising my fellow students, even my seniors.

I must also give credit to one of my former tutors, Professor Faboya who advised me to study Psychology.

What three songs do you listen to the most in your i-pod?

I love gospel music. When I was a young man, I listened to the great Sunny Okosun a lot.

Maybe the fact that we share the same name helps (laughs).

I also respect Fela Anikulapo Kuti. He was a great philosopher and saw what a lot of people did not see.

I love songs that help me meditate and stay calm.

If you were to choose one lady to go out on the date with, who would it be?

You may find this difficult to believe but that lady will be my wife.

Back then in school, I had about 27 girlfriends and was largely perceived to be a ladies’ man.

I was very popular because I was into television presentation with former Nigerian international, Segun Odegbami and FIFA instructor, Paul Bassey.

My wife was initially scared to date me because of that but I never let go because she’s so quiet, humble and responsible – the traits I was looking out for in my future wife.

It took three years of “serious toasting” (wooing) to get her to say yes and the attraction is still strong.

    Best holiday destination

I will always go for Miami in the United States. I read a lot of James Hardly Chase novels when I was younger and there were so many stories about Miami and its beautiful beaches.

I always wanted to visit the city and I am pleased I eventually did, last year.

    Your happiest memory?

That was when Nigeria qualified for the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea.

I was also team psychologist then and Amodu Shuaibu was the coach while Keshi was the assistant.

Tell me about your friendship with Okocha.

When I was named the team psychologist, I knew I needed the support of the senior players to succeed so during a national assignment, I went to the room of Jay Jay and asked to speak with him.

I told him I would need his support as he was the captain of the national team. He took me round the camp and introduced me to all the players.

Meeting individuals like Taribo West, Julius Aghahowa, Kanu Nwankwo, Sunday Oliseh and the others was really important at that stage of my professional life.

Mutiu Adepoju also assisted me a lot because I played football with him in Ibadan when I was younger.

I got along with all of them and I must thank them for helping me settle.

    ….and your worst memory?

That was when we failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

I felt we let the people down.

If your house was on fire, what one possession would you rescue?

After my family, it would be my Holy Bible.

My certificates and credentials are also important to me.

    What makes you smile?

(smiles) I just recalled an incident happened in 2000. I was part of the Nigerian football team as an administrator at the Olympic Games in Sydney.

We were scheduled to visit the Mayor of Sydney. I went with the coach, Bonfrere Johannes and former Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation, Dr. Tijani Yusuf.

I was chauffeur-driven by a white man – the same people my father worshipped – and that was one of the most fulfilling moments of my life. I was shedding tears all through the journey. It was a moving moment.

    And what makes you frown?

Whenever I fail myself, I get disappointed. I also like helping the less privileged and it breaks my heart when I fail to do that.

    Igesund plots Nigeria’s downfall

Ahead of Sunday’s final Group A match at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2014, head coach of South Africa’s national football team, Gordon Igesund has warned that his players will play to win against Nigeria’s Super Eagles, even though a draw guarantees Bafana Bafana qualification to the next round.

After a 1-1 draw against Mali on Wednesday, Igesund admitted that there is a pressure on him and his players ahead of the clash with Nigeria.

South Africa lead group A with four points and need only draw to qualify to the next stage of CHAN, but the coach insisted that he is interested only in a victory on Sunday.

“Any team needs to get a result after tonight’s game. The result puts pressure on everybody in the group, because it’s very close,” Igesund said.

“We’ll just continue now and go into our game against Nigeria knowing that every game we play, we play to win. Even if we need a draw, we’ll play to win it. This is a very tough group. It’s not going to be a one-way traffic.”

Stephen Keshi is not the only coach who can be worried about his side’s defensive performance, as Igesund was also unhappy with the goal conceded against Mali. “The goal we conceded, I thought was a soft goal. We weren’t aggressive enough in that situation.

“We should have been more brutal getting the ball away from there. There was a little bit of hesitation and then of course he (Sidibe) struck the ball and struck it well. I don’t think we should have allowed that to happen, but that’s football,” he sounded-off.

CHAN: Experienced Bafana will be tough – Keshi

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi , has admitted his team’s last group game against CHAN hosts South Africa will be tough, describing the Bafana as a more experienced team.

“If you look at some of their players like (Siphiwe) Tshabalala and goalkeeper (Itumeleng) Khune, they have lots of experience and this will matter a lot going into the decisive group game on Sunday,” MTNFootball.com quoted Keshi as saying ahead of the match.

“It’s very difficult to handle these youngsters (in my team), but they are an intelligent group who have mastered things quickly.”

South Africa leads Group A with four points ahead of Mali, who also had four points but an inferior goals difference.

Nigeria lies in third position with three points, while the Mozambicans are bottom with zero point.

The Super Eagles needs a win against Bafana to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament.

“I hope we get better and better because with football I cannot say we shall beat South Africa,” said Keshi, while insisting that Nigeria’s favourable record against South Africa will count for nothing on Sunday.

Kick-off is 6pm Nigerian time on Sunday.

  • Keshi rings changes for Mozambique

    Keshi rings changes for Mozambique

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, is set to make several changes to his starting team against Mozambique in the CHAN on Wednesday.

Both Nigeria and Mozambique are going for broke at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday after they lost their opening Group A matches.

Keshi will replace Sunshine Stars midfielder Ikenna Paul and Benjamin Francis of Heartland, who are both ruled out of the match.

Francis failed to recover in time from the knock he suffered in the game against Mali, while the muscle strain suffered by Paul in the Eagles training on Monday knocked him out of the game against Mozambique.

“Ikenna Paul and Benjamin Francis are ruled out of the game. We would have to rely on other players to do the job,” confirmed Keshi.

“I just want to take one game at a time. We have seen in the past that teams lose their first game and still go ahead and win the tournament.

“In 2010 here Spain lost to Switzerland in the first game and still went ahead to win, so anything can still happen,” MTNFootball.com quoted Keshi as saying ahead of the match.

3SC striker Gbolahan Salami is expected to lead the Eagles attack with support from Ejike Uzoenyi and Ifeanyi Ede.

Enyimba’s Bright Esieme will be in line to make his debut for the Super Eagles following the injury to Benjamin Francis, while Kano Pillars Shehu Abdullahi comes in for Paul in midfield. Another player who could start will be Joshua Obaje.

The players on Tuesday practiced shooting from range and attacking moves to sharpen their finishing in front of goal.

Meanwhile, coach of Mozambique team to CHAN, Joao Chissano, has declared that his team will shock Nigeria.

Chissano told MTNFootball.com:”The Nigeria team is not a strong side. We are both under pressure, but I have told my boys to just enjoy themselves because they are playing against a big side and when they play freely, it is possible to beat Nigeria.”

    Chibuzor Madu completes Enyimba move

Enugu Rangers’ captain, Chibuzor Madu has teamed up with the Aba Millionaires with the ambition of playing in the Caf Champions League.

The former Flying Antelopes skipper signed a one-year contract with the People’s Elephant – a move that will see him feature in the 2014 Caf Champions League.

Disclosing this to Goal, the midfielder who was dropped from Nigeria’s CHAN team said the reason behind this move is to actualize his dream of featuring in the Caf Champions League and also to win more trophies.

“I join them (Enyimba) because of the need to play in the Caf Champions League which is the most important thing in my career right now,” Madu told Goal.

“Though I considered my position as Rangers captain and the love of the management and fans while taking this decision, I felt I have to move ahead and face bigger challenges.”

He however revealed that he hopes to win laurels for the Aba Elephants and get the chance to play for the Super Eagles.

“My dream is to win the Caf Champions League and the Nigeria Premier League with them and get the chance to be called up by the national team coaches which is the ultimate for any player,” he concluded.

Madu Chibuzor will wear his favorite jersey number 12 when the league season kicks off.

  • CHAN defeat expected – Keshi

    CHAN defeat expected – Keshi

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, has said he was not surprised his team of inexperienced players fell 2-1 to Mali in Saturday’s opening CHAN game.
The Malians recorded their first-ever win against Nigeria at full international level, defeating their West African rivals 2-1 in Cape Town on Saturday.
“I was expecting this kind of result because of the anxiety that comes with this kind of championship for players that have not been exposed to tournaments like this,”MTNFootball.com quoted Keshi as saying after the game.
“Well what happened was that we did not play our game. We only started playing in the last 5 to 10 minutes and that was too late.
“In the half time break, I asked them to feel free and express themselves and I don’t know if that worked because we still lost the game.”
Keshi lamented that the Nigerian league has ended four months ago.
“I think this is a perfect opportunity for home-based players to move forward and get exposure. If it’s about the league of each country, we have been out of action for like four months and we have had these players for only three weeks, but I don’t know if that was responsible for today,” he said.
Mali coach Djibril Drame said he was delighted to edge past the African champions.
“It’s a joy and pride we feel today because we have just beaten the Africa champions,” he said.
“It was not an easy game. First matches are very important. Tactically, we were very well placed after watching tapes of how the Nigerians play, we ensured that our tactics changed and it worked for us.”
He said his team will now focus on next game against group leaders South Africa, who beat Mozambique 3-1 also on Saturday.

  • Eagles remain focus for CHAN

    Eagles remain focus for CHAN

    • Get trophy mandate

The Super Eagles said they will not be carried away but will approach each game with utmost seriousness and focus, as fans in South Africa and beyond continue to tip the team for honours at the 2014 CHAN tournament which starts this Saturday in Nelson Mandela’s country.

Assistant Coach Dan ‘The Bull’ Amokachi, said fans and pundits are entitled to their prediction for the tourney but he knows that there are no small teams here.

“The boss, Stephen Keshi does not believe in quick fix and we don’t either. We must work very hard if we are to take something out of this place and most importantly remain disciplined”

The players and officials agreed with him and wished their Head Coach will come to South Africa with the Coach of the Year Award and John Mikel Obi, the coveted African Footballer of the Year Award.

“That will further boost the confidence of the team we have here” declared Team Administrator, Dayo Enebi Achor.

Nigeria’s ambassador to South Africa, Sunday Yusuf, has charged the Super Eagles to ensure that they lift the African Nations Championship (Chan) trophy.

The diplomat who welcomed the Super Eagles at the OR Thambo International Airport told the team that nothing short of the trophy will be good enough as Nigerian fans have already gotten used to winning.

“Nigerians are now used to winning, especially here in South Africa and I’m sure you will not let the nation down,” Yusuf said.

Assistant coach Daniel Amokachi while responding in behalf of the team assured the ambassador that the team will do its best in the competition, even as head coach Stephen Keshi is expected to arrive on time before the Eagles’ opening game against Mali.

  • NFF seeks good show for CHAN Eagles

NFF seeks good show for CHAN Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has revealed that Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi has not been charged with winning the title at the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa.

The NFF through an executive committee member, Chris Green, explained that “presenting a good team and playing good football” is more important than winning the title.

“Let’s not forget that Nigeria has never qualified for the CHAN in two previous attempts. The most important thing is to present a good team and to play good football. If we win the trophy, then it’s a plus,” he told supersport.com.

The tournament is exclusively for footballers who ply their trade in their domestic leagues and Green is confident a solid outing by the Super Eagles will attract traffic to the Glo Nigeria Premier League (NPFL).

“A good outing by our team will attract attention to our domestic league and even attract players from different countries to the NPFL.

“We hope for a good outing at the CHAN but we are not putting any pressure on the players and coaches because we are looking at the bigger picture,” he said.

The Super Eagles will begin their preliminary campaign at the 2014 CHAN on January 11 against Mali in Cape Town.
