    CHAN: Egwuekwe may dump Eagles

The most consistent domestic league player in the Super Eagles, Azubuike Egwuekwe, has hinted he may not be available for the CHAN in January.

This will be a second major blow to the Nigeria ‘B’ team after the departure of star forward Sunday Mba for French second division side CA Bastia.

Towering central defender Egwuekwe told MTNFootball.com he is studying offers from France and Italy that could well rule him out of the tournament in South Africa.

“I cannot say categorically that I will play in CHAN come January or not. There are offers for me already and I may join a club in France or Italy, but I don’t want to reveal the club’s identity for now,” Egwuekwe told MTNFootball.com

The Warri Wolves skipper has deputised for injured Kenneth Omeruo in the heart of the main Super Eagles since the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

At a time, he was an ever-present in the Super Eagles as coach Stephen Keshi began rebuilding the team following the country’s failure to qualify for the 2012 AFCON in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

The home-based Eagles had also lost Godfrey Oboabona, Izu Azuka and Gomo Onduku to European clubs.

QUEST for greener pastures: Egwuekwe set to dump CHAN squad

AFCON 2013 and Super Eagles star, Azubuike Egwuekwe has sensationally told brilafm.net that he may not be a part of the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) team given the offers he has abroad with the winter transfer window set to open with less than a week to go.

Egwuekwe, who is currently training with the Super Eagles for the forthcoming Championship for African nations in January, says that he hopes to move abroad in the winter transfer.

“I have a lot of offers from Europe but I am just keeping it hidden, maybe January by the special grace of God.”

The 24-year-old Warri Wolves defender who started his professional career with Nasarawa United in 2006 further revealed that his imminent move may still come after the CHAN tournament in South Africa.

“You never can tell, anything can still happen, it may be before or after the CHAN in South Africa,” he said.

  • CHAN: No second chance for Iheanacho – Keshi

CHAN: No second chance for Iheanacho – Keshi

There will be no second chance for Nigerian under-17 star, Kelechi Iheanacho in the Super Eagles build-up for the 2014 African Nations Championship (Chan) scheduled for South Africa.

According to Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi, the youngster has missed one week training with the team since he opted to leave camp to sign for English club, Manchester City.

It is believed that the City deal may have fell through, giving the youngster and his representatives the chance to consider other options.

But Keshi explained to supersport.com that Iheanacho had a bright chance of making the Super Eagles squad for the CHAN which kicks off on January 11 after impressing while in camp.

“Kelechi did really impress us and at the time he was in camp with us he had started getting used to our style of play, the players and officials. In fact he had starting bonding well on and off the pitch with other players. Unfortunately when the call came that he was going abroad to sign a deal for Manchester City I couldn’t have stopped him since he had the backing of his family.

“Right now he’s not part of our plans for the CHAN because we’ve gone ahead with our preparation and team-building without him. And mind you he has lost one week of training and that’s a big gap to catch up with,” said Keshi to supersport.com on Friday.

Keshi is now ready to move on with the players available in the build-up to the tournament next month.

“There are other players in camp who are committed and we will have to work with them and get the best out of them for the tournament,” said the Nigerian manager.

Okwuosa backs Eagles to shine at CHAN

South Africa-based James Okwuosa has tipped Nigeria to shine at the CHAN because the team will play on good football pitches at the tournament.

Former Enugu Rangers skipper Okwuosa said Nigeria is blessed with abundant talents but lack good pitches in the country, a development that had prevented them from playing to their full capacity.

“Nigeria is blessed with good players and I see them doing well in CHAN in January. The good pitches in South Africa will make the team to do well, we lack those in Nigeria,” MTNFootball.com quoted the Chippa United defender as saying on Friday.

“If I am still in South Africa by then, I will be there to support them from the stands,” he added.

  • Keshi’s CHAN challenge

    Keshi’s CHAN challenge

South Africa has always been a fertile hunting ground for Nigeria, and come January, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will attempt to add to Nigeria’s laurels when they storm Mzansi to participate in the biennial CHAN tournament.

Nigeria will be making her debut in the tournament and is grouped alongside Mozambique, Mali and hosts South Africa in Group D.

Stephen Keshi became a national hero when he led the Super Eagles to claim Nigeria’s third continental crown with a hard fought 1-0 win over Burkina Faso at the FNB Stadium on February 10, this time he is taking a relatively unknown crop of players who he hopes can add more positive vibes to his growing reputation.

Nigeria qualified for the 2014 CHAN tournament by edging out Ivory Coast 4-3 on aggregate to book a place in the tournament for the first time but before even the tournament gets underway, the ‘big boss’ has already warned Nigerians to manage their expectations.

This can’t be further than the truth because during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying game against Malawi, I put the question to him as regards if he has a team because the core of the home based squad had already disintegrated.

Keshi, in his usual soft demeanor, fired back at me and insisted he didn’t have a team, which translated to him, alongside the team are starting from the scratch. This isn’t far from the truth because players like reliable defender Godfrey Oboabona had left Sunshine Stars to join Caykur Rizespor in Turkey, while Juwon Oshinawa, Dele Olorundare, Henry Uche, Gomo Onduku, Chibuzor Okonkwo , Kalu Uche and a host of others aslo jumped ship.

Again, there are no guarantees that the likes of Sunday Mba, who I might regard as the poster boy of the current home based side, Azubuike Egwuekwe and Solomon Kwambe might be around by January as foreign clubs are already snooping around to take them on as soon as the winter transfer window opens.

This leaves Stephen Keshi in a quagmire, as he continues to build a team capable of holding their own in South Africa come January. The task is an enormous one and one will hope he gets it right and enhance his reputation with a commendable outing.

Thirty players were called into camp when camping resumed in the first week of December, and already Keshi has started to chop and change his squad as Mohammed Jiya, Reuben Ogbonnaya, Ezekiel Mba, Danladi Isah and Chibuzor Madu have been shown the exit door.

Relatively unknown Plateau United starlet Eric Kwame has been handed a shock call up after impressing the gaffer during the Eagles friendly with Plateau United as well as new Taraba United safe hands Ibrahim Pius as Keshi continues to experiment.

    CHOP AND MIX

As an ardent follower of the league, there are certain players that this writer feels would have been given at least a chance during resident camping to prove their mettle subject to being picked for the final squad.

Enyimba’s Femi Thomas and Theophilus Afelokhai of Kano Pillars are two goalkeepers who have been consistent on the domestic scene for some time now and surely deserve a call up.

Thomas, who was part of the Flying Eagles silver medal wining team to the 2005 Africa Youth Championship in Congo was colossal as Enyimba won the Federations Cup and narrowly missed the league title, while Afelokhai, a former U-23 international was the man in the middle as Kano Pillars won back to back league titles.

Surely, one would be tempted to think they would at least made training camp, and are already experienced on the continental stage too. Daniel Akpeyi, Chigozie Agbim and the youngster Dele Alampasu are all good goalkeepers in their rights, but having the duo would have spiced up competition in camp and given the fact that first choice goalkeeper Agbim hasn’t played competitive league football this past season, this would have been a wake up call for the Warri Wolves man.

It will also be worth mentioning that Chinedu Udoji, Markson Ojobo, Ike ThankGod and Stephen Eze who are arguably the best centre backs in the country, didn’t make the cut as well as marauding left back Uwa Uwadiegwu and the experienced Mutiu Adegoke , who comes with bags of experience.

The midfield looks promising with the effervescent Kano Pillars lynch pin Rabiu Ali, hardworking Ugonna Uzochukwu of Rangers International and Christian Pyagbara of Sharks of Port-Harcourt whom I tip to be one of the stars of the tournament.

Ejike Uzoenyi, who spent time at Rennes in Ligue 1 will bring his experience to bear to help the young lads in the midfield, but the likes of Lordson Ichull, Sunday Chinedu and youngster Kingsley Sokari would have given Keshi more ammunition to experiment with given their superlative displays in the recently concluded season.

The attack is replete with options for the ‘Big Boss’ as he has big striker Gambo Mohammed, Rangers International’s Christian Obiozor who impressed me a lot during the recent Jordan friendly in Amman. His hold up play and first touch is really impressive for someone his size.

Oghenekaro Etebo, who was a revelation last season has a chance to show what he can do. The Warri Wolves man was the only striker to hit two hat-tricks last season which was also his debut in the top flight. He comes with pace and tenacity and should prove a handful for defenders if he makes the final cut.

Mfon Udoh, who wasn’t in the initial list called up to camp has been handed a call up and a chance to show his 14 goals in the league was no fluke as Keshi has decided against retaining league leading scorer from last season Victor Namo.

Ifeanyi Edeh of Rangers International, Taiwo Awoniyi of the Imperial Academy in Ilorin, Gbolaham Salami of Shooting Stars are some of the strikers that Keshi wants to test to see if they can fit into what he is planning to present in South Africa.

Hopefully Stephen Keshi’s experimentation will yield dividends and also produce players that can graduate into the main squad and provide options for the gaffer as he heads towards Brazil 2014.

    WHO PLAYS WHERE

Stephen Keshi has been a proponent of the 4-3-3 system and I assume he will stick to this system as he prepares his team for CHAN Championship as he played same against the Ivorians in Kaduna and in the reverse leg.

Given any unforeseen circumstances, Chigozie Agbim will play in goal and I suspect the defence is already settled. With Godfrey Oboabona’s exit, Azubuike Egwuekwe will be the main man in the heart of the defence.

The Warri Wolves defender has been an integral part of Keshi’s team from the onset and his experience from the Africa Nations Cup and the Confederations Cup should be of good bearing. Umar Zango should partner Egwuekwe in defence, while usual suspects Benjamin Francis and Solomon Kwambe should expectedly man the full back positions.

The midfield will be a very interesting area as I presume Sunday Mba will be the pivot and probably Ugonna Uzochukwu as the anchor. Rabiu Ali also looks likely to start because he has started the last two matches for the CHAN team. Ejike Uzoenyi should provide width while Oghenekaro Etebor might play just behind Gambo Mohammed ( if he is fit for the tournament.)

Christian Obiozor started the recent Jordan friendly and showed flashes of brilliance, so he just might get the nod if Gambo’s injury worries persist.Ugonna Uzochukwu, who was like a terrier in the middle of the pack in the friendly, has also come good in due time and for my money, is a sure bet to get on the plane to South Africa.

All of these postulations are based on recent games, but again Keshi is known for his dexterity and can switch when he deems fit, but what is certain though, is that he has a huge task ahead of him as he continues to tinker his team for the biennial tournament.

  • Gambo bullish about Eagles CHAN chances

Gambo bullish about Eagles CHAN chances

Nigeria striker, Gambo Muhammad, is fancying his country’s chances of going the whole stretch at the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa.

The Kano Pillars forward is confident that the Super Eagles can ape their counterparts who won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa against all odds.

“It is going to be a very tough competition in South Africa but we are ready to work hard and make sure Nigeria does well there and even goes very far in the competition. This year the Super Eagles won the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa even when no one gave them the chance to do so.

“Now it’s our turn to do same. It is our first time in the (CHAN) competition and being first-timers we are not the favourites (on paper) but that does not mean our opponents won’t show us respect. All the teams taking part in the competition are all capable of winning and that’s why we have to show respect to our opponents,” Gambo told supersport.com on Christmas eve.

Gambo also spoke on Nigeria’s group stage opponents, South Africa, Mali and Mozambique.

He believes the hosts, South Africa will be stronger at the tournament scheduled to kick off next month.

The striker is also of the view that Mali and Mozambique will not be easy foes.

Apparently Gambo’s submission on Mali and Mozambique is based on the fact that they edged out Guinea and Angola respectively in the qualifying stage to reach the tournament.

“It’s a tough group. But we are confident of qualifying from it. South Africa have a very good team because most of them are in their main squad and they’ve had big game exposure. Mali and Mozambique will be equally tough because you can’t write off teams that also qualified for the competition,” he said.

The CHAN will hold in three cities – Polokwane, Bloemfontein and Cape Town in South Africa from January 11 to February 1, 2014.

  • Alampasu, Awoniyi look good for CHAN

Alampasu, Awoniyi look good for CHAN

Super Eagles Chief Coach Stephen Keshi is ready to shock Nigerians with the inclusion of two of the victorious Golden Eaglets’ players in his final team list for the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) as he continued to cherish the performances of both goalkeeper Alampasu and forward Taiwo Awoniyi in the Eagles training sessions and matches in the Abuja camp of the team.

Keshi at a media parley last Wednesday had confessed that he did not miss the services of midfielder Kelechi Iheanacho who was excused from the camp to go and conclude the contract process of joining Manchester City of England but he would have loved that Iheanacho stays with the team because of his immense talent and contributions to the team in camp.

But a source in the team disclosed to SportingLife yesterday that baring injuries and other unforeseen situations Alampasu and Awoniyi should make the final squad of 23 that will represent Nigeria in the Africa Nations Championship in South Africa in January 2014.

“I must confess to you Alampasu and Awoniyi look good to be in South Africa in January barring unexpected situations. You know the type of person Keshi is when it comes to the coaching and football business. He is a very blunt person and always wants to win games and championship even if he is not making it public.

“To be very honest with you the Eaglets have really impressed everybody here with their performances in training and the practice matches they have played so far. What I can say is if they can or continue to keep their heads low as it is now they will surely be in the final list of players that will represent Nigeria in CHAN in South Africa.

“You know that on Friday the chief coach sent five players packing without touching these players we are talking about. That shows they are doing what the coach and his assistants expect from them”, the source told SportingLife .

  • Gbolahan Salami: I’m not a bad boy

Gbolahan Salami: I’m not a bad boy

    • Targets CHAN to bounce back

Home-based Eagles and Shooting Stars Football Club (3SC) striker, Gbolahan has told SportingLife that he is not the bad boy that is being portrayed in the media.

A disappointed Salami said his actions on and off the field have often been misinterpreted, thus he will use the opportunity of the Eagles call-up to prove that he is a good person.

“There are a lot of things that happen to a football player that makes him to react negatively at times. We are all human beings and we can react at times to injustices and bad treatments from club and match officials, but when that happens they will then call the player a bad guy.

“For instance, when you sign a contract with a club and the club fails to pay you or fulfil its side of the contract but still puts immense pressure on you to perform well and score goals.

“While you are playing your mind would be on the necessary bills like house rent and other essential things you are supposed to buy as the needs and bills you need to settle.

“People outside won’t understand the pressure you are going through.

“The same thing happens in match situations when you are hacked down badly on the pitch and the referee fails to protect you and when you complain you sometimes incur his wrath.

“These are the problems that I often face and people now call me names”, Salami lamented.

He thanked Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi for the opportunity and platform to prove himself as footballer. He vowed to make maximum use of this opportunity to make Eagles’ squad for the African Nations Championship holding in South Africa next year.

“I have since put my bad times behind me and I am working hard to make the final squad for CHAN and put up a good performance, as well as help the team to win the Championship like we did when we won the AFCON 2013,” Salami vowed.

  • CHAN Eagles can make World Cup, says Keshi

CHAN Eagles can make World Cup, says Keshi

There is a lot of hope rising for the home based players that are currently in camp in preparation for the 3rd edition of the CHAN championship holding in South Africa early next year.

According to the Head Coach of the team, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi all players in camp have equal opportunities to make to the 2014 World Cup holding in Brazil. The Big Boss said it is his team that the home based players in camp should excel to make the team to the World Cup “That is my prayer.

It is my prayer that the players make maximum impact at the CHAN championship.

We are not camping them for the CHAN alone, we are training them to be able to break into the main team. If we have five or six of them, that excel at the championship, there is nothing stopping them from making it to the World Cup.

I think that is the main reason why the CHAN championship was established. I hope and pray that the players do well to merit a shirt in the World Cup team”.

  • Eagles trounce Tornadoes

    Eagles trounce Tornadoes

    • Tackle Plateau United Saturday

The Super Eagles continued their buildup to next month’s Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tourney in South Africa with a 2-0 trouncing of hard-fighting Niger Tornadoes of Minna on Wednesday evening.

The match was played at the mainbowl of the Abuja National Stadium and the team will next tackle Plateau United at the same venue on Saturday morning.

The cagey encounter was watched by a sparse crowd that included NFF’s Director of Technical, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme as the Minna side gave the Eagles a run for their money. The side, now managed by former Flying Eagles and Dream Team Coach, Godwin Koko Uwa, was up to the task forcing the Eagles to their end of the pitch in the first ten minutes of the encounter.

Head Coach Stephen Okechukwu Keshi started with a very strong squad with captain, Chigozie Agbim in goal, Azubuike Egwueke, Yinka Adedeji, Solomon Kwambe and Ogonna Osuchukwu holding sway in the defence. Christian Pyagbara and Rabiu Ali held sway in midfield while Gbolahan Salami, Barnabas Imenger and hard-working Abubakar Aliyu were the preferred strikers. Imenger got the Eagles on the score sheet 14 minutes into the encounter after Abubakar was brought down for a free kick. Ali flicked it in, and after Abubakar and Pyagbara’s shots were blocked, Imenger coolly slotted in for the opener.

Thereafter, it was Eagles all the way with Imenger, Ali, Abubakar and Egwuekwe all coming close but the half ended 1-0. But not without incidence as Agbim, was made to pull off a fantastic save with a tip of his fingers in the 44th minute in the highly robust encounter.

In the second half, the Eagles introduced Sunday Mba, Taiwo Awoniyi, Ejike Uzoenyi, newcomers Obannor Erhune and Ikeleji Bello, who acquitted themselves well, and Eaglets goalie, Sunday Alampasu who was a commanding presence in goal with his control of the defence line.

But the crunchy play of Tornadoes and misses from Mba, Ejike and Rangers’ Christian Obiozor kept the scoreline where it was until the 82nd minute when Ejike was brought down in the vital area and dimunitive Ikechukwu ‘Small’ Azubuike stepped forward to dispatch the penalty.

Tornadoes Coach, Uwa, said he was impressed with the Eagles’ display against his side despite the many changes made by the technical crew.

”They showed why they are the reigning African champions”, he said, while Keshi simply said he was impressed by the physical play of the opposition, as that will be the focal point of most teams that will take part at the CHAN tourney.
