    THE environment is cool and calm. The birds are equally resting in the nests and they must be in dreamland. Somehow, that peaceful ambience changes suddenly, a strong wind blows and the sweet sleep of two birds is disturbed, they were flung out in the open screaming for help.

  • Engineer accused of cheating

    The police yesterday arraigned Charles Ekhator, an engineer, at a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly receiving a transfer of N220,000 in his account, which belonged to another person.

    The defendant, of Gwagwalada, Abuja, was arraigned charged with cheating and misappropriation.

    The prosecutor, John Okpa, told the court the defendant claimed his bank card was stuck in an ATM machine and fraudulently received a transfer of N220,000 from Okafor Ngozi, on May 20.

    He said the defendant knew the transfer of N220,000 from Ngozi was not his, but he refused to disclose to the bank and converted the money to his use. Okpa said the offence contravened sections 321 and 308 of the Penal Code.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

    The defence counsel, Abdulrazak Aiyedun, prayed the court to admit his client to bail, assuring the court that a surety will be provided. The judge, Abdulwahab Mohammed, admitted the defendant to bail at N200,000 with one surety, who must be resident in the court’s jurisdiction.

    He adjourned the matter till August 14 for hearing.

  • Businessman in trouble for alleged breach of trust, cheating

    The police yesterday arraigned a 43-year-old businessman,  Ibrahim Shehu, at a Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court, for alleged breach of trust and cheating.

    Shehu, of Annuri Motors, Sokoto, is standing trial on a two-count charge on breach of trust and cheating, offences he denied committing.

    Prosecutor Umar Rabi’u told the court the offences were committed on March 27.

    He said the defendant sold a Honda Civic car to Shagari Harande, of College of Education, Sokoto, for N500,000.

    The prosecutor said after using the vehicle for a month, Harande returned the car to the defendant to resell it.

    He alleged that after the defendant sold the car, he converted the money to his use.

    Rabi’u said the offences contravened sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    Chief Magistrate  Abubakar Adamu admitted the defendant to bail at N300,000 and one surety.

    He adjourned the case till April 16 for mention.

    Father, daughter arraigned for ‘cheating’

    A 60-year-old man, Inusa Aliyu, and his daughter, Jamilia, were yesterday arraigned at a Masaka Upper Area Court, Nasarawa State, for alleged cheating.

    The defendants, who live at Luvu Masaka, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of trust and cheating.

    The prosecutor, Frank Swem, told the court that Yusuf Mamuda, a resident of Kurudu, Abuja, reported the matter at the Divisional Police Station, Masaka, on January 4

    Swem alleged that in September, a man simply identified as Haruna, now at large, conspired with Aliyu to persuade Mamuda to marry Jamilia.

    He told the court Haruna and Aliyu capitalised on the fact that Mamuda was searching for a wife. They asked him to pay N650,000 for the marriage rite.

    Quoting the complainant, Swem said: “When it occurred to me to investigate, to avoid taking an already married  woman, I requested her divorce certificate, since they claimed Jamilia is a divorcee.

    “They were unable to produce the certificate as claimed; they asked me to give them N60,000 to enable them travel to Zamfara to bring the certificate,” Swem said.

    The prosecutor said the complainant gave them the N60,000, but they failed to produce the certificate.

    However, he said Jamilia later told Mamuda that she won’t marry him, as everything was a conspiracy between her father and Haruna, to defraud him.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    According to him, the offences contravened sections 97, 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    The judge, Yakubu Ishaku, granted the defendants N500,000 bail each, with a reliable surety each.

    He adjourned till January 19.

    An Upper Area Court in Masaka, Nasarawa State, has ordered the remand of three men, David Boyi, Bulus Dio and Ibrahim Sure, for alleged cheating.

    The defendants are facing a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust and cheating.

    The prosecutor, Frank Swem, told the court that on November 15, Ehis Erabhahilemen, of Jeun Masaka, reported the case at Masaka Divisional Police Station.

    He said on October 26, the first defendant (Boyi), conspired with the other two and Emmanuel Sure, now at large, to commit the crime.

    Swem alleged that the defendants sold a piece of land, measuring 50 by 100 ft, on the same address, to the complainant, for N1 million

    He added that it was discovered that the land did not belong to any of them.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 97, 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    The Judge, Yakubu Ishaku, did not take the defendants’ plea.

    He ordered that they be remanded in prison to act as a deterrent to others, and adjourned the case till December 17 for hearing.
