EPL: Chelsea fight back from two goals down to beat West Ham 3-2

Champions League‑chasing Chelsea fought back from two goals down to win in stoppage time against West Ham in a dramatic London derby at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Fernandez’s 92nd-minute winner sparked wild scenes at Stamford Bridge to snatch victory having been 2-0 down through goals from Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville.

New manager Liam Rosenior’s substitutes had hauled Chelsea back into the game as half-time introductions Joao Pedro and Marc Cucurella both scored to level the match.

It was a blow for West Ham who dominated the first half. Bowen’s in‑swinging cross beat Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who was unable to claim the ball as Pablo threatened to get a touch on its way through to open the scoring.

That seventh‑minute strike came either side of two shots on target from new striker Taty Castellanos, while Summerville curled home a second goal from inside the box after a move down the right involving Bowen and Aaron Wan‑Bissaka.

Cole Palmer’s 30-yard free-kick was Chelsea’s only shot on target in a dismal first half.

The hosts were booed off at half-time and Rosenior made three changes. He removed the struggling left‑side trio of Jorrel Hato, Benoit Badiashile and Alejandro Garnacho – at fault for both first-half goals – bringing on Joao Pedro, Cucurella and Wesley Fofana.

After West Ham efforts from Matheus Fernandes and Bowen were saved early in the second half, Chelsea began to dominate.

Pressure built as Liam Delap went close and a long‑range Moises Caicedo long-range strike was pushed away, before Fofana’s deep cross was headed in by Joao Pedro to pull a goal back in the 57th minute.

Thirteen minutes later, Cucurella – one of Rosenior’s changes – produced a diving header to equalise after Malo Gusto’s header across goal caused a goalmouth scramble.

With the crowd now behind them Chelsea pushed for a third, and while West Ham’s Jean-Clair Todibo hit the post in the 86th minute, Fernandez pounced to finish Joao Pedro’s cross from close range for the winner.

Konstantinos Mavropanos was sent off for his part in a melee at the end of the match after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check, as emotional scenes boiled over.

The result lifts Chelsea above Manchester United into fourth place in the Premier League, while West Ham remain five points below Nottingham Forest. United and Forest play tomorrow and both have a game in hand.

  • Sterling leaves Chelsea by mutual consent

Sterling leaves Chelsea by mutual consent

Raheem Sterling has left Chelsea by mutual consent after reaching an agreement to end his contract early.

The 31-year-old had 18 months remaining on his £325,000‑a‑week deal.

Sterling leaves after three-and-a-half seasons at Stamford Bridge following his move from Manchester City for £47.5m in 2022.

“We thank Raheem for the contribution he made while a Chelsea player and wish him well for the next stage in his career,” Chelsea said.

The England international made 81 appearances for the Blues but had not played a competitive match for Chelsea since May 2024.

He had been training separately with the so‑called “bomb squad” at the club’s Cobham base after failing to secure a move in the summer.

Several clubs, including Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen, explored a deal for the England winger, while a potential switch to Fulham did not materialise.

It is understood that Sterling, who started his career at Liverpool and has won 13 trophies in total, is keen to remain in London but is open to playing anywhere, either at home or abroad.

Sterling signed a five-year £325,000-per-week contract in 2022, relocating his young family in the process.

The £47.5m transfer was a statement of intent by Todd Boehly, who at the time was acting as sporting director, and Clearlake Capital.

However, the people behind the deal are no longer in charge at the club.

In addition to Boehly’s diminishing influence, Thomas Tuchel was the head coach who oversaw Sterling’s arrival.

Then came Graham Potter, then Frank Lampard, and then Mauricio Pochettino, all within Sterling’s first two seasons at the club, in which he played 81 times and scored 19 times as Chelsea finished 12th  and then sixth.

But two years into his contract Chelsea effectively ended his role as a first-team player when new manager Enzo Maresca decided Sterling was not in his plans.

He did not play for the club again and spent last season on an underwhelming loan at Arsenal.

EPL: Chelsea defeat Palace 3-1 to maintain top-four charge

Chelsea strengthened their hold over Crystal Palace with a 3-1 Premier League triumph at Selhurst Park on Sunday, marking their 18th consecutive unbeaten encounter against the Eagles.

The Blues broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Estêvão capitalised on a loose pass from Jaydee Canvot, sprinted past Tyrick Mitchell, and slotted the ball past Dean Henderson.

Palace pressed for a response, but Fernández’s wayward header in his own box almost handed Estêvão a second chance, which the forward failed to convert.

Chelsea doubled their advantage early in the second half. Within five minutes of the restart, Estêvão set up João Pedro, who cut inside Adam Wharton and neatly threaded the ball through Henderson’s legs.

The visitors made it 3-0 when Fernández converted a penalty after Canvot handled Pedro’s shot inside the box.

Crystal Palace’s woes deepened as Adam Wharton picked up two yellow cards in five minutes for fouls on Moisés Caicedo, ruling him out of their next match against Nottingham Forest.

A late Jefferson Lerma header was denied by goalkeeper Sánchez in the 88th minute, but Chris Richards netted a consolation goal, giving the home fans a brief reason to cheer.

Chelsea held on through nine minutes of stoppage time to seal the victory, moving up to fourth place in the Premier League under Liam Rosenior. The win makes Rosenior the first English manager since Steven Gerrard in 2021 to win his first two top-flight matches in charge.

The result extends Crystal Palace’s winless streak to 11 consecutive competitive games.

Pedro, Palmer secure first Premier League win for Rosenior

Liam Rosenior tasted victory in his first Premier League game in charge of Chelsea as goals from Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer earned a hard-fought 2-0 win over Brentford at Stamford Bridge.

A run of one league win in nine had placed the home side at serious risk of falling away in the race to qualify for the Champions League, and the situation could have deteriorated further had Keith Andrews’ side made better use of near-total dominance in the second half. The visitors could count themselves mightily unlucky to be making the short trip back across west London with nothing.

They had begun the afternoon in fifth place and should have ended it with their European credentials strengthened, but poor finishing particularly from Kevin Schade undermined a brave display, a demonstration perhaps of what is missing if they wish to be a regular presence in the top six. Chelsea were far from at their best but there was much room for optimism in Rosenior’s third game at the helm. His team dug in, showed bags of spirit and made the most of what Brentford offered them.

Pedro showed lightening-quick thinking to score when a ricochet fell his way in the first half, then substitute Liam Delap won a late penalty from a goalkeeping error to present Palmer with a goal from the spot.

Brentford though had the first clear chance to go ahead. Schade cut brilliantly inside Trevoh Chalobah but made the strange decision to square a pass rather than go for goal.

Joao Pedro’s powerful first-half strike and Cole Palmer’s penalty after the break gave Rosenior a second win in three matches as Blues boss.

But they did not have it all their own way, with Brentford having more possession, shots, and shots on target than their hosts.

The Bees started brightly and Kevin Schade had their first two attempts on goal, before passing to Mikkel Damsgaard when he should have taken the chance to shoot.

When Chelsea responded, Palmer curled a shot over and Joao Pedro had a penalty appeal waved away before the Brazilian broke the deadlock on 26 minutes.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez forced Michael Kayode into a mistake on the edge of his own box and as the ball broke, Joao Pedro smashed the ball past Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Brentford rallied and Damsgaard, Schade and Mathias Jensen, who struck the post, all had chances to equalise, and Alejandro Garnacho missed an open goal from six yards at the other end.

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was then forced into a superb save to deny Schade in a one-on-one early in the second half.

With Brentford continuing to press, Rosenior sought to protect his lead, withdrawing Garnacho for Andrey Santos in a defensive change.

That merely invited more pressure, though, and Bees striker Igor Thiago uncharacteristically headed wide.

Chelsea were able to punish that mistake as a misplaced pass from Nathan Collins and slow reactions from Kelleher allowed substitute Liam Delap to intercept and draw a foul in the area from the goalkeeper.

Palmer sent Kelleher the wrong way to seal a victory that meant they leapfrogged their visitors into sixth in the Premier League.

  • EPL: Wilson stuns Chelsea as Fulham claim 2-1 win under Rosenior

EPL: Wilson stuns Chelsea as Fulham claim 2-1 win under Rosenior

New Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior watched from the stands as Harry Wilson’s strike condemned his team to defeat against west London rivals Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Rosenior was not appointed in time to take charge but took a watching brief and may have feared the worst when Marc Cucurella was sent off early on.

Chelsea fell behind to Raul Jimenez’s header after 55 minutes, but Rory Delap levelled after the ball rebounded off the post from a corner routine.

With nine minutes remaining, Wilson beat Jorrel Hato with a smart touch just inside the penalty area before half-volleying the ball into the left corner beyond Robert Sanchez.

However, under caretaker manager Calum McFarlane, Chelsea had been left with a mountain to climb from the 22nd minute when Cucurella pulled down Wilson and was shown the red card for a professional foul.

It was Chelsea’s eighth dismissal of the season, including one for former boss Enzo Maresca who was deemed to be over-celebrating in October after a last-minute winner against Liverpool.

There was anger in the away end, with a ‘BlueCo out’ banner displayed and chants against the ownership as they watched on alongside their new appointment Rosenior.

Defeat means Chelsea fall to seventh place in the Premier League, below Brentford, while Fulham join them on 31 points from 21 games.

JUST IN: Rosenior agrees to become Chelsea manager

Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior says he has “agreed verbally” to take over at Chelsea.

The 41-year-old Englishman is set to replace Enzo Maresca, who left on New Year’s Day.

“I cannot turn down this opportunity to join an incredible club, incredible squad who are Club World Cup champions,” Rosenior said.

Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo multi-club ownership group that also controls Chelsea.

“I haven’t signed yet. Everything is agreed and it will probably go through in the next few hours,” Rosenior added.

“I’m here because I care about this club [Strasbourg] and I felt it was right to answer your questions physically here today before I move on.”

Rosenior said Strasbourg first-team coach Kalifa Cisse, assistant head coach Justin Walker and head of analysis Ben Warner will join him at Chelsea.

Ronseior joined Strasbourg in July 2024 and guided the French club to seventh in Ligue 1 last season, securing European football for the first time in eight years.

His final match was a 1-1 draw at Nice on Saturday, their fifth league game without a win.

They are seventh in Ligue 1 and top of the Conference League.

“The last 18 months have been a joy and the best of my professional career,” Ronseior said.

“I will love this club for the rest of my life but I cannot turn down Chelsea.”

The former Fulham and Hull full-back has never managed in the Premier League but previously coached in the Championship with Derby County and the Tigers.

“I would not have accepted the Chelsea job if I was not ready,” Rosenior said.

“There are clubs you just cannot turn down. I hope the Strasbourg fans can see that and be proud of that.”

He added: “I have had interest from many clubs, including Champions League clubs, which I have always been open with to [our president] Marc [Keller] and our ownership.”

Chelsea sit fifth in the Premier League before their game against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday (19:30 GMT).

Caretaker manager Calum McFarlane was in place for Chelsea‘s 1-1 draw at Manchester City.

  • JUST IN: Maresca leaves Chelsea after poor run of form in December

JUST IN: Maresca leaves Chelsea after poor run of form in December

Enzo Maresca has left his role as Chelsea manager with the club sitting fifth in the Premier League.

The Italian, 45, departs less than six months after winning the Club World Cup at the end of his first season at Stamford Bridge.

“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track,” Chelsea said.

The Blues have won just one of their past seven league matches and took only six points from six games in December to fall 15 points behind leaders Arsenal.

But results are only a small part of the story.

Maresca, who had a contract due to run to 2029, delighted key figures at Stamford Bridge – including sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, and influential co-owner Behdad Eghbali – by steering Chelsea to a top-four finish and winning the Uefa Conference League and Club World Cup last year.

Yet success soon turned to sourness in his relationship with the hierarchy.

Maresca stunned even members of his own staff when – after beating Everton 2-0 for Chelsea‘s solitary Premier League win in December – he said “many people” had made it his “worst 48 hours” since joining the club.

The former Leicester manager has also switched agents – from the Wasserman agency to Jorge Mendes – and has been talked of as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, which Maresca has dismissed.

  • EPL: Joao Pedro equalises as Chelsea rally to stun Newcastle

EPL: Joao Pedro equalises as Chelsea rally to stun Newcastle

Chelsea forward Joao Pedro haunted former suitors Newcastle United as his side showed their powers of recovery to come back from 2-0 down and claim a point.

It looked a long way back for Chelsea at a raucous St James’ Park after a well-taken double from Nick Woltemade put Newcastle in control at half-time.

But no side have dropped more points – 13 – from winning positions in the Premier League than Newcastle.

So the stadium suddenly felt a little nervy when Chelsea captain Reece James pulled one back with a pinpoint 25-yard free-kick just a few minutes into the second half.

It then turned a little hostile when Newcastle were denied a penalty after Trevoh Chalobah bodychecked Anthony Gordon inside the box before Chelsea equalised.

Joao Pedro, who opted to move to Chelsea ahead of Newcastle last summer, drew his side level. The Brazilian raced through on goal and slotted the ball past Aaron Ramsdale after capitalising on a slip from defender Malick Thiaw.

It set up a grandstand finish as the game became increasingly stretched and Harvey Barnes had a glorious opportunity to win it for Newcastle late on, but the substitute fired wide on the volley to leave head coach Eddie Howe covering his face with his hands on the touchline.

Chelsea remain six points clear of Newcastle in fourth while Howe’s side are in 11th for the time being.

  • UCL: Chelsea suffer setback as Atalanta take all three points

UCL: Chelsea suffer setback as Atalanta take all three points

Chelsea’s hopes of qualifying automatically for the Champions League knockouts were dealt a blow as Atalanta came from behind to win in Bergamo.

Both sides went into this game with identical records in the league phase of this year’s tournament, having won three, drawn one and lost one to sit on 10 points.

For large parts there was little to separate them in this game, too, although Chelsea got their noses in front in the first half when Joao Pedro turned in Reece James’ cross.

But Atalanta always looked a threat going forwards, with former Charlton and Everton attacker Ademola Lookman causing problems.

James shot wide in the second half but Atalanta upped the pressure and deservedly levelled when ex-West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca headed in a cross.

Alejandro Garnacho drove a strong effort straight at the goalkeeper but Atalanta got the winner late on when the Blues defence backed off Charles de Ketelaere, who took full advantage with a driven strike.

Chelsea tried to rescue a point late on but a superb save by Marco Carnesecchi denied Pedro.

The result means Chelsea drop out of the top eight – the places that qualify automatically for the knockouts – to 11th with two league phase games remaining.

Atalanta, meanwhile, leap up to third, three points ahead of the Blues.

This was a hugely disappointing result for Chelsea as even a draw was keeping them well placed to secure the top-eight finish they need to avoid the lottery of the play-offs.

But they let their concentration slip in defence with seven minutes remaining and Atalanta took full advantage.

The Italians are in good form at the moment so this was always going to be a difficult test for the Blues, but they will be frustrated to be leaving with nothing after taking the lead.

But the bigger picture is that this continues Chelsea’s concerning run of form in all competitions.

Since beating Barcelona 3-0 at the end of November they are now without a win in their last four games.
