    Chelsea beats Arsenal 2-1

Chelsea handed Arsenal its first loss of the season, winning 2-1 on Saturday to consolidate top spot in the Premier League.

A free kick that glanced off Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny into the net proved to be the winner in the 53rd minute, earning the European champions a fifth win in six league games and dealing a blow to one of their potential rivals for the title.

So solid at the back this season, Arsenal’s defensive vulnerability returned at Emirates Stadium, looking unsure at set pieces with Fernando Torres beating Koscielny to another free kick by Mata to give Chelsea the lead in the 20th.

“Defensively, we were not at the level we have to be in a game like this,” said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who may regret the decision to play Koscielny ahead of the in-form Per Mertesacker.

The spotlight was also on a center back for Chelsea, with John Terry playing just two days after being banned for four games for racially abusing an opponent in a league game last year.

With the defender contemplating whether to appeal the suspension, he remained available for Chelsea and shrugged off constant jeers from the home fans to deliver a largely composed display.

Terry was fooled by the good movement of Gervinho for Arsenal’s equalizer in the 42nd, however. The Ivory Coast international peeled off the former England captain before controlling a cross by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and slamming an unforgiving close-range finish high into the net, maintaining his improvement this season after being handed the center-forward berth by Wenger.

That was the first goal that Chelsea had conceded in four games but Roberto di Matteo’s side held on to secure victory in its toughest test yet this season, proving it has the mettle in defense and creativity up front to challenge the two Manchester clubs for the title.

“I’m very pleased today with our performance,” Di Matteo said. “We played against a very good team and we didn’t allow Arsenal to get in a rhythm.”

Moses: I’m enjoying life at Chelsea

Victor Moses is enjoying life at Chelsea and believes that playing alongside some of the world’s best players at the club will help him improve his own game.

Moses moved to Stamford Bridge from Wigan for a fee in the region of 11 million Euros over the summer and is excited to be back in London after his spell at Crystal Palace.

Speaking to the club’s official wesbite, Moses revealed: “Everything is going well at the moment. I’m enjoying life at the club.

“It’s exciting for me to be back in London and playing for a massive club such as Chelsea, particularly as I’m a London boy, I’m just delighted to be here.

“It’s a quality feeling to be playing alongside some of the most talented players in world football at the moment, and that’s what you need around you. The more you play with these type of players, the more you improve and the more experience you gain.”

Moses made his first start for the club when the Blues hosted Wolves in the League Cup last night and the Nigeria international has fond memories of facing them.

He added: “I remember the game, we won 3-2 at the DW Stadium. We went into a 3-0 lead but then Wolves came back and scored twice, but luckily we managed to hold on for an important win.

“They are a good side, it’s not going to be an easy game, but we’ve started the season well. It’s important we keep doing what we’ve been doing, approach the game in the right way and get the win.”

The 21-year-old is hoping to use the competition to show of his ability to Roberto Di Matteo and help the club to win more silverware.

He continued: “When I was at Crystal Palace and Wigan I played in most of the League Cup games, it’s a good experience for younger players to play in competitive matches.

“It’s a big opportunity as a young player to show the manager that you’re good enough to hold down a regular place in the side.

“It’s an important trophy to win. Winning trophies can help give you the mentality to push on and do well in other competitions such as the Premier League and Champions League, so we just need to keep on winning games.

“It’s a few years since Chelsea have won the competition, so it would be great for the club and the players if we could win it and get it in the trophy cabinet.”

  • Mikel to Chelsea fans

    Mikel to Chelsea fans

John Obi Mikel apologised for the mistake that cost Chelsea the chance to open their Champions League defence with a win after their 2-2 draw with Juventus.

The holders blew a two-goal lead at Stamford Bridge Wednesday night, with a pair of defensive blunders costing them dearly against the Italian champions.

Having allowed Juve to get back into the Group E clash before half-time, Chelsea looked set to eke out a 2-1 win before Mikel needlessly gave the ball away 10 minutes from time.

He then failed to prevent Claudio Marchisio playing Fabio Quagliarella into space for the equaliser, with David Luiz also all at sea.

“If I want to make up an excuse, I can,” Mikel said. But, for me, I gave the ball away. I put my hands up, we move on.

“I’m sorry about the mistake, but there are no excuses.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea have condemned racist abuse on Mikel on Twitter, after the midfielder deleted his account on Thursday.

Mikel, 25, removed his profile from the social networking site less than 24 hours after his misplaced pass allowed Juventus to level in their 2-2 Champions League draw at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea originally insisted it was entirely coincidental that Mikel, who said he was entirely unaware of any abuse, had decided to delete the ‘Mikel12Official’ account he set up this summer.

However, the club have since informed the police after being made aware of the developments. A statement read: “We’ve been made aware of racist tweets targeted at Mikel which are totally unacceptable, disgusting and abhorrent. We’ve informed the police and support taking the strongest possible action.”

  • Terry cleared for Juve clash

    Terry cleared for Juve clash

JOHN TERRY has been passed fit for the start of Chelsea’s defence of the Champions League.

The Blues skipper jarred his knee in Saturday’s heated goalless draw at QPR days after recovering from an ankle injury.

But tough-nut Terry has given boss Roberto di Matteo a boost by coming through a light training session Monday as preparations get underway for the visit of Italian champs Juventus today.

And UEFA bigwigs admit they will be watching the visitors’ bench at Stamford Bridge like hawks to make sure banned Juve coach Antonio Conte does not try to beat his rap and phone his pals in the dugout.

Conte is serving a 10-month ban for keeping quiet over match-fixing when boss of Siena and is banished to the stands.

A UEFA spokesman said: “The ban does extend to UEFA competitions.

“Conte isn’t allowed to have any contact with the players during the game or at half time.”

  • ‘Lucky’ Chelsea ready to make history —Mikel

‘Lucky’ Chelsea ready to make history —Mikel

John Obi Mikel admitted Chelsea were ‘kind of lucky’ to win the Champions League but insisted they now had a team capable of historic back-to-back triumphs.

The Blues kick off the defence of their European crown tonight, with many still pinching themselves at the manner in which they finally ended their agonising wait for club football’s biggest prize.

Chelsea’s astonishing run has led some to dismiss their triumph as being down to nothing more than blind luck, with Liverpool legend Graeme Souness declaring: ‘Nobody in the history of football has ever had that much luck.’

Mikel, who was crucial to their success after playing every minute from the quarter-finals onwards, said: ‘When people say that, sometimes it’s actually not true.

‘I think we worked very hard for what we achieved last season. But, at the same time, you need luck in everything you do. So, yeah, we were kind of lucky but, this season, it’s a different story altogether.

‘We brought in new players that are going to help us in this campaign.

‘So, hopefully this season, we can play good football and win games. And hopefully, we can go very, very far in this tournament – hopefully get to the final again.’ Manager Roberto Di Matteo, whose appointment as caretaker was the catalyst for a sensational turnaround in Chelsea’s fortunes back in March, shrugged off being branded ‘lucky’.

‘They said the same about many other managers when they won,’ he said.

‘You need to deserve everything you get, and I think we worked very hard for it. We prepared ourselves very well against our opposition. It can’t just be that [luck]. You might need, and you will need, a portion of luck during a competition like this. But every team has it to be able to achieve the final target to win it. That’s a minor part of it.’

However, Roman Abramovich’s £80million summer spending spree, and the delay in confirming Di Matteo as permanent boss, suggests it played a bigger part than that in Chelsea securing the owner’s ‘Holy Grail’.

The Russian will expect to see signs of the ‘good football’ promised by Mikel in today’s opening group game against Juventus.

He will also expect to see the team show the same hunger and desire that was as important as any amount of luck in last season’s success.

The UEFA Super Cup two and a half weeks ago provided a wake-up call about what awaits them if they rest on their laurels, with defender Ashley Cole tweeting: ‘No fight, desire, passion.’

Mikel said: ‘We’re still hungry, there are still players in that dressing room that still want to retain this trophy. We want to build on it, we don’t want to stop, and hopefully we can build on it this season, and tomorrow is the start of it. ‘So we have to make sure that we go out there tomorrow and prove ourselves and make sure we want to go far in this tournament.’

He added: ‘You’re going to look at people and hear that Real Madrid and Barcelona are going to be favourites.

‘But I think that’s what happened last season when we played Barcelona.

‘I think everyone wrote us off even before the game, but we showed how much the Champions League meant to us and how much we wanted to win it. I think, still, nothing changes.’

Chelsea now get to call themselves European champions and also make themselves a bigger scalp for their opponents, not least one unbeaten in 42 Serie A matches.

Mikel said: ‘It does add to pressure on us but, at the same time, we’re kind of more relaxed, because we’ve done it, this club has won it now.

‘We’re all big players and this is what we live with. So we have to go out there tomorrow and make sure that we play well.

‘Obviously, it’s not going to be easy because Juve haven’t lost since last season.’ That is largely thanks to Andrea Pirlo, who was also one of stars of this summer’s European Championship.

The Italy star plays in the same position as Mikel, who said: ‘Playing against a legend like Pirlo is going to be great.

‘But I also want to go in there and win tomorrow. So it’s going to be a battle.

‘He’s a great player but, once we step on to the pitch, it’s a different story. He wants to win, I want to win. I respect him as a player and hopefully I can learn something from him tomorrow.’

  • Chelsea,QPR hit by injury problems

    Chelsea,QPR hit by injury problems

Chelsea and QPR moved from counting handshakes to counting the cost of a predictably fiery west London derby.

Anton Ferdinand’s pre-match snub of John Terry and Ashley Cole set the tone for Saturday’s goalless Barclays Premier League draw at Loftus Road, which saw rival players snap into each other from the first whistle.

Ironically, Terry and Ferdinand were among the walking wounded at the final whistle, with both having required treatment in the closing stages.

Chelsea captain Terry typically elected to play on after pulling up with a knee injury, something manager Roberto Di Matteo was keen to play down ahead of his side’s Champions League opener against Juventus on Wednesday.

‘It doesn’t look like we have any major problems,’ Di Matteo said.

‘It was a tough battle for everybody, there were plenty of knocks.

‘We’ll assess it tomorrow morning and then shift our attention to Wednesday.’

Ferdinand hobbled off in the dying seconds with what looked like a hamstring injury but QPR boss Mark Hughes was more concerned about problems picked up by Andrew Johnson and Fabio.

Both had to be substituted in the first half with respective knee and hamstring complaints and face scans to determine the extent of the damage.

Terry – who shook off an ankle problem to start on Saturday – was not Chelsea’s only injury concern, with John Obi Mikel having also taken a knock in the back.

The Blues can ill-afford either to be missing as they open the defence of their European crown this week.

  • Moses: I’ll take my chances

    Moses: I’ll take my chances

Victor Moses is ready to grab his chance as he prepares to make his Chelsea debut against QPR on today.
Moses switched to Roberto Di Matteo’s Blues in a £9million summer transfer from Wigan.
The 21-year-old, who was born in Nigeria but moved to London at the age of 11, joined Wigan from Crystal Palace in January 2010 and feels he is ready to make an impact back in the capital after learning under Latics boss Roberto Martinez.
He told the Daily Mirror: “I feel like I am back home – I feel excited to be here again – but it has been good being away.
“Playing at Wigan developed my character. Roberto Martinez is a great manager and he loves to play football. Having a manager like him encourages you to play the football in the right way and carry yourself in a more professional way. It was great working with him.
“Even last month, Roberto (Martinez) was always talking to me to get the transfer speculation out of my head. He just wanted me to concentrate on the football.
“Now Di Matteo likes to play football the same way. They are similar. I think that will make it easier for me to adapt at Chelsea.”
Another summer signing, Eden Hazard, has already made a big impact at Stamford Bridge and Moses wants to emulate the Belgium international when he gets his chance on the pitch.
“He is pretty impressive,” said Moses. “He has still got loads to prove but you can see what he has done in the three games he has played in the Premier League. He is a great player and he can make it even bigger than he has so far.
“I have played in the Premier League before – it is not my first time. When I do get my chance, I have just got to go out there and grab it.
“It depends on where the manager is going to play me. I am comfortable playing anywhere up front. I just want to enjoy myself and play football.”
