  • PDP faction to IGP: take over our chieftain’s murder

The Ali Modu Sheriff faction of Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Idris Ibrahim, to personally take over investigation into the killing of a former Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government, Niyi Pirisola.

He was killed by unknown gunmen last Friday.

The assailants reportedly stormed his home in Okitipupa town at about 3.00a.m. on the fateful day.

A statement issued in Akure by the faction’s Director of Media & Publicity, Yemi Akintomide, frowned at the cruel act of killing the politician, whom many described as humane, gentle and down to earth.

It said: “We urge the IGP to personally swing into action by commencing full investigation into this killing and ensuring the perpetrators are brought to book within the shortest possible time and the law takes a full course on the sad incident.

“We as a political party, decry and condemn in it totality, this kind of politics with bitterness where our brilliant and versatile hands will be cut down in their prime, when the state and Nigeria need them mostly.

“We pray for the family left behind by the departed soul to seek solace in God, for continue guidance, protection and better living conditions in the absence of their breadwinner.”

  • Buhari’ll restore public education glory, says APC chieftain

All Progressive Congress (APC) Chairman in Benue State, Comrade Abba Yaro, has assured pupils that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari will restore the glory of primary education in the county.

Addressing pupils of St Theresa’s Primary School, Makurdi, when they visited him, he said the APC manifesto placed priority on laying a solid foundation for educational development of the youth.

He said during the 16 years of Peoples democratic Party (PDP) rule primary school education was neglected, thereby giving advantage to private school owners to exploit parents by increasing schools fees yearly.

An APC chieftain, Chief John Akperashi, called on the government to free parents from the stranglehold of private school owners by upgrading public schools.

The former House of Representative candidate for Kwande/Ushongo federal constituency praised the steps taken by APC administration to reposition education in the country and called for support from stakeholders.

  • Ogun PDP chieftain quits partisan politics

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Chief Niyi Adegbenro, has quit partisan politics and urged Nigerians to support President Muhammadu Buhari to “reshape Nigeria”.

Adegbenro said Nigeria requires discipline to achieve anything meaningful today, adding that any government trying to bring about the necessary discipline and change, should be supported to succeed. He also doubted the chances of the highly factionalised PDP returning to power in Ogun State soon, saying the performance of the  All Progressives Congress(APC) and Governor Ibikunle Amosun represents a huge challenge.

The former political adviser to Governor Gbenga Daniel during his second term, who adopted a “siddon look attitude” since his party lost out in 2011, made this known to reporters at the weekend in Abeokuta, the state capital.

He said like former President Olusegun Obasanjo whose second coming has divine purpose and eventually saw Nigeria clear its crippling debt burden, Buhari’s second coming would redeem the country from the shackles of indiscipline and corruption.

Adegbenro said he has left partisan politics to the younger ones, expressing confidence that  the President’s frequent trips abroad, his economic policies among others, would surely yield quality dividends to Nigerians,

The Septuagenarian urged Nigerians, particularly the impatient ones, to give the President time to put things right and not stampede him into running government of “business as usual” that brought about the nation’s ills and stunted growth.

  • Fayemi mourns APC chieftain Olofin

    Fayemi mourns APC chieftain Olofin

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has condoled with the family of the late Gbenga Olofin, the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Ekiti Central.

Fayemi, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Yinka Oyebode, described Olofin’s death as “deeply shocking and saddening”.

He described the late Olofin as a highly refined politician, loyal party man and a lover of peace, who loved and served his people passionately.

Recalling his working relationship with the late senatorial candidate, Fayemi said Olofin was a politician of distinction, who had a clear vision and a huge sense of mission.

“He was a man of conscience, character and courage, who played politics without bitterness,” Fayemi said.

The minister added that Olofin’s death has robbed the party and indeed Ekiti State of a distinguished citizen, a patriot, whose only motivation in politics was service.

“Ekiti State and the APC family would miss the contributions of this man of honour to the development of the state.

“Olofin will be sorely missed. Our prayer is that God grants his family the fortitude to bear the loss,” he added.

  • Enugu APGA chieftain joins APC

    Enugu APGA chieftain joins APC

A chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Enugu State, Anthony Nwafor, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Also, party executives in Nkanu East and West councils and their supporters, joined the fray.

Nwafor said: “I am happy today that I am joining the APC. I chose to join the APC for several reasons; the least being that our people decided to join APC. This is a game of people; if your people say they want you to go here, it is best to go with your people.

“But aside that, the most important reason for joining the APC is because of the wind of change blowing. I seem to have fallen for most of their tenets and aspirations, as well as their aims and objectives; I love it.

“I love the fight against corruption; that alone drew me to admire the party because it is in tandem with my stance, having been a member of the anti-corruption fight in Nigeria.”

On hand to receive Nwafor and his supporters were the state Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, and the Southeast Chairman, Chief Anike Nwoga.

Nwoye assured them that there was no discrimination between old and new members, noting that every member has equal rights and privileges.

He advised them to feel at ease with the leadership and feel free to seek advise whenever necessary.

Nwoga admonished the new members to believe that the APC would take over Enugu State in 2019.

He told them to spread the message that the APC has arrived.

“We want you to win votes for the party and not just become a member. We look unto you to deliver your constituencies in the coming local government elections,” Nwoga said.

  • How APC can win future elections, by chieftain

How APC can win future elections, by chieftain

Lagos State All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain Hon. Deji Awobotu has urged party members to brace for the next local government elections, stressing that the party must maintain its hold on the grassroots.

He advised the party to field credible candidates for the chairmanship and councillorship polls to win the contest.

Awobotu also charged members to vote for credible flag bearers who can work for the party and lift up the standard of grassroots governance in the Centre of Excellence.

The politician spoke with reporters in Surulere, Lagos Mainland, shortly after donating cash and food items to party faithful in Coker/Aguda Local Council Development Area (LCDA).The empowerment programme was jointly organised by the Deji Awobotu Foundation and other local party leaders. The ceremony was witnessed by Comrade Wasiu Sulaimon, Musiliu Balogun, Prince Kunle Oshodi, Alhaji Olaide Eshinlokun and other party leaders.

Urging party supporters to gird their loins, Awobotu said: “The time for local government elections is approaching. If you want to vote, it is better to vote for competent and credible candidates from your community. These are the people who understand your challenges. I urge you to vote for honest people as chairmen and councilors. “

Awobotu thanked the people for their abiding faith and interest in the APC, urging them to double their support for the party in future elections.

He advised elected officials to remember party supporters who worked for their victory during the elections.

Awobodu said: “The welfare of our party members is paramount. Those in public officers should look back and remember those who worked for the success of the party during the elections. Not every party member can be in government at the same time. Those in power owe it a duty to assist those outside to build the party.  The party must move forward and those elected on its platform must render invaluable services to the people.”

Thanking Awobotu for his kind gesture, Sulaimon described him as a loyal and hardworking member of the party.

He said Awobotu has always extended a duty of care to party members during the Christian and Muslim festivals, urging him not to relent in his efforts.

A chieftain, Hon Tunde Adegoke, who commended the foundation, noted that it has organised sports competition for youths in the area.

  • APC chieftain seeks more funds for councils

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Prince Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, has called for a reversal of allocation sharing formula in favour of local governments in Nigeria.

Abass-Aleshinloye made the call while featuring on a radio and television programme in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The APC chieftain, who is a former chairman, Oluyole Local Government of Oyo State, faulted the current allocation sharing formula which gives the lowest percentage to the 774 local governments in Nigeria, stressing that it renders the councils incapable of pursuing policies and projects that stimulate growth at the grassroots.

According to him, local governments are the closest to the people, meaning that they require more funds to address issues in communities that make the entire nation.

Explaining the socio-economic reasons for mass hunger, unemployment and impoverishment of Nigerians, especially at the grassroots level, the former council chief identified lack of adequate fund and autonomy for inability of local councils to measure up to the expectations of the people for optimal service delivery.

“A situation as it is now in the country that gives local council as the tier of government closest to the people the least and meager revenue allocation does not augur well for democracy and development except the allocation formula is reversed to give local governments the highest allocation,” Abass-Aleshinloye said.

Prince Aleshinloye also posited that agriculture as the basic industry at the grassroots level should be encouraged, supported and subsidised to make it attractive and as a solution for youth employment, food security and poverty eradication in the country.

He said: “With the collapse of oil price in global market and the attendant dwindling national earnings from oil and gas, Nigeria has no choice than to embrace agriculture as a solution to poverty, hunger, unemployment and dwindling national income as the most realistic bailout. With this, local governments should be the central focus of revivi-ng agriculture and rural economy.”

He, therefore, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his emphasis on agriculture as the cardinal focus of his administration. He also appealed to Nigerians to support the present administration.

  • Chieftain advises Lagos APC on unity

Chieftain advises Lagos APC on unity

A CHIEFTAIN of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Alhaji Taoreed Faronbi, has advised the party to work towards institutionalising internal democracy to reposition itself ahead of the local government elections.

Faronbi disclosed this at a stakeholders meeting organised by Hon. Bolaji Ayinla, who represents Mushin II Constituency at the House of Representatives. At the event, which took place at Aggrey Memorial School, Mushin, Lagos, he urged the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and other chieftains to ensure that the choice of the people prevail, “because the third tier of government being the closest to the people is very crucial”.

He said Mushin indigenes have planned to vehemently resist any attempt by any leader to impose candidates on the people during the election.

Faronbi, who is popularly known as Alado, said the people are determined to reject imposition, which he described as “bringing somebody from outside the large community to become their local government leader”. He added: “This has been the practice in Mushin and it always causes of political violence and bloodshed within the community.”

Faronbi said the widespread belief in Mushin is that most of the politicians claiming Mushin when seeking for elective positions are not indigenes of Mushin. He said: “They are not the true sons and daughters of the community; they are imposed. As a result, they often abandon the electorate after securing their elections into various positions.”

He said none of them has ever provided job opportunities or any other useful thing to Mushin residents, particularly the youths. This development, he said, deprives the people of their rights. “It is also the major cause of political violence within the community,” he added.

He said Mushin is one of the largest communities in Lagos that delivers large votes. He lamented that the community has never produced governorship candidate nor occupied the post of a local government chairman.

To end this trend, Faronbi appealed to Tinubu and others party chieftains to intervene to checkmate those in the habit of imposing non-indigenes on the community, adding that they are the sponsors of political violence in the area.

He said Mushin has educated young men and women in abundance and that they can perform excellently, if given a chance.

Alado also urged voters in the area to stop demanding money from politicians before or after the election, saying it is like selling their birthright because it will hinder them from enjoying the dividends of democracy.

He promised to organise a meeting with other Mushin political office holders to enable them to address the challenges facing residents of the community. The promise came in response to demands for the provision of social amenities in the community by the residents.

  • APC chieftain urges support for Buhari

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Chief Livinus Okwara has said that for the much-needed change in the way Nigerians do things and improvement in the nation’s economy to be realised, Nigerians must give unflinching support to President Muhammadu Buhari in his efforts to reposition the country and give it a new direction.

He also condemned some Igbo youths who are agitating for the state of Biafra, describing the action as an exercise in futility. He said the youth were misinformed and misguided about the Biafra project.

Chief Okwara urged the youth to support the present government which is progressive in outlook and principle.

In an exclusive interview with Southwest Report, he said: “The present agitation by some youths in the Southeast and South-south geo-political zones of the country is the handiwork of those who have not worked for the interest and progress of the Igbo nation. I do not support the move because they cannot survive on their own as no other tribe can.

“Their survival depends on their association with other tribes in Nigeria because the country has become a unit already. In fact, there are more Igbo outside the Igbo land than those who reside within the zone. We should avoid the mistake of the past where Igbo citizens suffered monumental human and material losses. Igbo lost most of their educated youths as they went to war unarmed and many women because widows prematurely.”

He advised the Federal Government to invite the agitators for dialogue as he advised the youth to be focused and not be misled by propagators of old Biafra, an idea, he said, was illogical.

On the emergence of a progressive as the President of the country, Chief Okwara said: “I am happy to be alive to witness the emergence of a progressive government at the centre. It has the capacity for development which the conservatives are not aware of. It is a significant change in the political history of Nigeria. We are happy we have it now.

“Buhari is a progressive because he has the interest of the poor at heart. Right from his time in the military, he never wanted the poor to suffer. It has been a dialectic struggle between the rich and the poor. A lot of time has been lost and much funds gone down the drain; but it has been a worthwhile effort. It is now a task for government to lift the poor.”

He believes that the coming of the ministers of diverse intellectual background and working experiences is a welcome development, saying many have been governors who understand the problems of the people.

Besides, they are major campaigners for change and I have no doubt that their tenures will be successful, especially in the area of employment generation.

According to him, the N5, 000 stipend promised by the APC government for the unemployed will create invisible economic power that will improve people’s purchasing power with its economic multiplier effects. He urged the Federal Government to discountenance the call for devaluation of the Naira, saying devaluation is only beneficial to the industrialised world.

“You devalue when you are an industrial power because your products will be cheaper and accessible to other economies. Examples of such industrial powers are India and China.

Chief Okwara, who established the first indigenous computer training in Nigeria, Rimax Institute of Science Technology, urged the Federal Government to invest heavily in science and technology as the quickest way to attain scientific and economic advancement.

He said when he returned from the United Kingdom in the 70s, computer education was almost non-existent but for the love of the country, he said, he had to establish Rimax Institute to expose people, particularly the young minds, to computer education. The effort became an instant success as, between 1970 and 1977; we were able to establish the institution in 19 states of the federation .The number of states increased in subsequent years.

“We were able to train an initial figure of 5,000 experts in computer science. This figure grew astronomically in years following. At a point, we were involved in training members of staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and NITDL. The initiative resulted in our offering scholarships to people as the programme became attractive to them.

“We had to expand the curriculum to include civil, electrical, electronic engineering and secretarial studies, among others. Our aim was to create a middle level manpower as we discovered a yawning gap between those at the top and those below. It is on record that we gave scholarship facilities to the Awori people in Lagos to reduce inequality in education.

He spoke glowingly of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his wife Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, who was buried penultimate week. He said he was close to the family very early in life, describing Chief Awolowo as an exceptionally gifted personality.

“For a man to achieve his feat, such must be of high discipline and hard work. I was close to Mama; she was a woman of impeccable character and high intelligence. She was an epitome of humility.
