Chinese scientists develop new flu vaccine

A research group from Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on Saturday announced they have developed a new type of flu vaccine using nano-technology.

Cui Zongqiang, leader of the research group said the intranasal nano-vaccine can target broad-spectrum flu viruses and induces robust immune responses.

“In our study, an intranasal nano-vaccine worked well against infections of H1N1 and H9N2 virus in mice.

“The results suggest that the 3M2e-rHF nanoparticle is a promising, needle-free, intranasally administered, cross-protective influenza vaccine,’’ Cui said.

Across China, measures have been taken contain the winter flu outbreak.

Experts said flu infections this winter are 71 per cent above the average for the same period in the previous three years, with child cases rising sharply.

  • China expects heavy air pollution during Lunar New Year

China expects heavy air pollution during Lunar New Year

Some regions of China could suffer heavy pollution because of fireworks and unfavourable weather conditions during Lunar New Year celebrations.

This condition will be so in spite of a ban on firecrackers in more than 400 cities, the Ministry of Environmental Protection warned on Wednesday.

“Some regions are likely to see heavy or even severe air pollution because of intense fireworks and firecrackers,” said the ministry in a statement late on Tuesday.

Lunar, or Chinese New Year, which starts on Feb. 15 this year, is China’s most important holiday.

Families and revellers traditionally celebrate with several nights of fireworks and firecrackers. The cacophony is believed to drive away bad spirits and usher in an auspicious start to the year.

More than 400 cities across China, though, have banned fireworks since last year to curb air pollution during the 15-day holiday and reducing deadly accidents, which are common.

Smog-prone northern China, including the capital city of Beijing, is expected to see heavy pollution from Thursday through Saturday, said the environment ministry.

Severe air pollution is also likely in Heilongjiang and Liaoning province in the northeastern China, Anhui and Zhejiang provinces in the east, Sichuan and Xinjiang region in the west, and also some regions in southern China, it said.

Industrial plants would typically be ordered to cut production during days of heavy smog, though most factories would have already closed for the holidays.

Some businesses will extend the holiday until March 3, although the official holiday period lasts through Feb. 21.

  • Animation: Minister seeks partnership with China

Animation: Minister seeks partnership with China

THE Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has called for a meaningful partnership with China to develop Nigeria’s Animation Industry.

The Minister stated this in Abuja on Thursday when he received, in his office, a delegation of Television Production and Animation Companies from China.

He described animation as the fastest growing genre of the film industry, saying animation will thrive in Nigeria, especially if it is rooted in the culture and tradition of the people.

“Animation today has grown into a multi-billion-dollar business and notably in China, France and some other countries and we have in abundance in Nigeria abundant talent and also content.

“What we need is a meaningful partnership between these companies and Nigeria to develop our animation technology and our animation culture to a level that it will not only be impactful and meaningful, but will also be another vehicle through which we can promote the culture of Nigeria and its diversity,” Alhaji Mohammed said.

He expressed the optimism that animation will open another vista of opportunity for the talented youths in Nigeria because of the abundance of interesting stories in the country, and stressed the need for technology transfer from China in order to make the desired impact.

“We have the content, we have the stories, what we need is the technology. So we want to partner with you in a manner that we can encourage our very young and talented artists, film-makers and producers. But the content of the animation, for it to be meaningful to us and to the younger ones, must be rooted in the culture and history of our people,” the Minister said.

He said with Nigeria’s remarkable progress in the ease of doing business and the various positive economic indices being recorded, the country is now the preferred destination for investors, with a guaranteed on investment.

Alhaji Mohammed advised the companies to take advantage of the various policies put in place by the government, such as a three-year tax holiday for companies that have been classified to enjoy pioneer status, and invest in Nigeria in view of the country’s huge population, talent and availability of content.

Earlier, Mr. Chen Huanan, the leader of the delegation and the Director of Culture and Tradition in the Chinese Ministry of Culture, said the delegation is in Nigeria to seek areas of cooperation with their counterparts in the country.

  • UK, EU set for clash over citizens’ rights during transition

UK, EU set for clash over citizens’ rights during transition

Prime Minister Theresa May has warned that European citizens arriving in Britain after Brexit in 2019 may lose some rights, setting up a clash with the EU over their treatment during any transition period.

Curbing immigration was a key reason why Britons voted to leave the EU in 2016, following a large influx of EU citizens, especially from poorer countries in eastern Europe.

The European Union has offered Britain a status quo transition until the end of 2020 after Brexit. The bloc wants its three million citizens to remain eligible for all the same rights until the end of that period.

May has suggested EU citizens coming to Britain after March next year will be treated differently.

“People who had come to the UK when we were a member of the EU had set up certain expectations – they made a life choice and set up certain expectation,” May told reporters on her way to China.

“I‘m clear there’s a difference between those people who came prior to us leaving and those who will come when they know the UK is no longer a member of the EU.”

This is one obstacle Britain and the EU will need to resolve to reach a transitional deal, which will give the two sides time to prepare for the far-reaching impact of the end of 46 years of union.

Philippe Lamberts, a European lawmaker who deals with Brexit, told our reporter on Thursday of the looming clash: “Citizens’ rights will be a negotiation point and we want to stand firm on this that new provisions only enter into force after the end of the transition period.”

Many Brexit backers are voicing concern that the referendum result may be betrayed with the plan to change little of the current relationship immediately after Britain formally leaves on March 29, 2019.

May dismissed some of those concerns.

“They did not vote for nothing to change when we come out of the EU.

“What we’re doing now is doing the job that the British people asked the government to do which is to deliver on Brexit.”
