Nigeria, Chinese firms sign $21m equipment deal

In order to reduce the cost of healthcare services in the country, a Nigerian firm has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese company to supply critical medical equipment worth over $21 million to enhance healthcare delivery in the country.

The equipment including; Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) which are necessary for medical checkup among others.

Addressing newsmen yesterday in Abuja, shortly after signing the MoU, a deputy director of Sky Medical Limited, Hamza Nma Ndawuya, said the availability of the medical equipment in the country will also discourage medical tourism outside the country.

Ndawuya said: “We have few hospitals with these equipment in the country and now with our partners, we are not only bringing these equipment, our efforts will help to reduce problems Nigerians are facing in terms of healthcare services. Like the MRI, when you check, the entire country has about five or six of the machine.

“We here to sign an agreement, MoU with a Chinese company. We want to supply equipment to Nigerian hospitals; Government hospitals and private hospitals. We already have hospitals that have shown interest in acquiring the MRI.

“We are expecting the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), CT (Computed Tomography) and other critical equipment that are not in our hospitals. We have requested, we have given them a request list and they have worked on it and by next two months, the equipment are going to be in Nigeria.

“So, now we are coming with five more of the MRI machines. This equipment is crucial for checking the human system and it is very important for Cancer and other ailments. For the CT machines, we are bringing not less than five and other equipment will be made available to boost the country’s healthcare delivery.”

Also speaking, the representative of the Chinese firm, a director, Mr. Wang Yang, confirmed the partnership, adding that his company was happy about the development.

Yang said: “I’m glad to be here and complete the transaction. We will continue to try our best to support the professional and technical medical services in Nigeria through partnership with this company.”

Chinese envoy urges West Africa to resist external interference

The Chinese envoy to Nigeria, Ambassador Yu Dunhai, Friday urged the sub-region to resist any form of external interference.

Dunhai spoke at an exchange programme between students from Tsinghua University of China and University of Abuja, with the theme “Civilizational Exchange and Mutual Learning between China and Nigeria,” held in Abuja.

He said: “I looked at the security situation now in West Africa. I know that many people are very much concerned. But one principle I believe that is very important is that we should object to any foreign interference in the region. But particularly by any major powers. I think, you know, for civilisation, exchange, and mutual learning, there are two principles that we need to follow. Because it’s very important.

“I think we should respect equality, equity, and peace. All civilisation is equal. We don’t believe that there is any civilisation that is secure and empowered. Because each civilisation grows from its own national condition. For instance, the civilisation of the United States. It grows from the real condition of this country.”

Dunhai also called for improved communication and exchange between his country and Nigeria.

He said: “The first partnership action is the people-to-people exchange and mutual learning. That’s why I believe that today we have to build and improve our communication and exchange in combination to this very important topic. Why is the people-to-people exchange so important? Because countries’ relations eventually boil down to people-to-people exchanges.

“Nigeria is very much blessed with rich resources, huge development potential. So, I see there is great potential for the development of Nigeria.

“I believe that people-to-people exchange creates the foundation for our bilateral relations. Because while China and Europe are bilateral relations, it’s not only about government-to-government relations. It’s not only about business.

But eventually, it’s people-to-people relations. Over the years, China and Nigeria have carried out a lot of cultural exchanges. For instance, we co-hosted the Cultural Week of China and Nigeria.

“We hosted the Chinese Festival event. And we invited Chinese artists to come to Nigeria to work together with Nigerian artists. And we established a cultural centre in our respective countries.”

He also said China and Nigeria share a lot of similarities: “We have a lot of common values. The first one is that I find that in Nigeria and China, we are both disarming countries. We do not believe in war. For instance, I have studied the history of Nigeria. Since the founding of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Nigeria has never been involved in a war. And if you look at China, it’s the same. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, we have never initiated a war with the other countries.”

He noted that sustained training, equipping and dynamic operational strategies had enhanced NA’s operational effectiveness in the ongoing fight against terrorists and insurgents in the country.

He added that this had enabled the troops to decimate the terrorists and curb terrorism threats.

Speaking further on the provision of water, the Minister said: “And then again, we have gone further, you know the Greater Abuja Water Works which is being handled by CGCOC, that has been awarded for years … has reached 75 per cent completion. We believe that by the grace of God by this December, or thereabout they would have completed it.

“The President said look, you can’t only provide for the city, you have to talk about the rural areas and so we are keeping up with this idea that there is a need to have satellite town water supply in Gwagwalada, Kwali and Kuje. We have now signed the MOU with CGC for them to carry out this assignment.”

The Minister stressed that the projects, which would further ensure the FCT’s development, were pushed by Mr. President at the FOCAC summit as part of his agenda to bring hope back to residents of the FCT.

Speaking on lighting up the city, Wike said: “One key project which is very dear to us and one of the reasons why we are here today is to light up Abuja because Abuja will be fifty years by next year so it should be a jubilee year for us. And we want Abuja to be like other cities, like what we see in Beijing …we have gone round and we have seen light everywhere and that is how we want Abuja to be.”

While appreciating the quality of work done by CCECC in the execution of projects, the Minister thanked the company on behalf of the President for the development of the FCT and Nigeria in general.

He also appreciated the company’s efforts in making sure the commercial operation of the Abuja Metro line became possible during the first-anniversary celebration of President Tinubu.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Press, Officer of the Minister Anthony Ogunleye, Wike said the completion of the project was a testament to the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that the rail is operational due to the efforts of CCEC.

In their separate responses, the President of CCECC, Mr Chen Sichang, and the Chairman of CGCOC, Mr. Lan Meizhong both expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed on them to execute the projects, while assuring the Minister of quality and timely delivery of the projects.

The signing of the MOUs is one of the fallouts of the just concluded summit on the Forum for China and Africa Cooperation held in Beijing, China.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had during the summit visited CCECC, and explored areas of cooperation with Nigeria.

On the minister’s entourage was the Permanent Secretary of the Treasury, Alhaji Adamu Wanki, Executive Director, of Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), Dr. Mohammed Dan Hassan, Director of Procurement, Alhaji Musa Idris, and other senior officials of the FCTA.

  • Global Challenges: Chinese Government Rolling out Blueprints

Global Challenges: Chinese Government Rolling out Blueprints

    By Raphael Oni

In today’s interconnected world, it is crucial for us to come together and address the global challenges that affect all of us. From climate change to poverty, from disease outbreaks to political conflicts, these issues require collective efforts and collaboration from all nations. By working together, sharing resources and knowledge, and implementing sustainable solutions, we can make a positive impact on these challenges. It is important for us to prioritize cooperation, empathy, and innovation in order to create a better future for our planet and all its inhabitants.

Ten years ago President Xi Jinping propounded the idea of building a global community of shared future, answering a question raised by the world, by history, and by the times: “Where is humanity headed?” His proposal lights the path forward as the world fumbles for solutions, and represents China’s contribution to global efforts to protect our shared home and create a better future of prosperity for all.

Let us commit to addressing global challenges with determination and dedication, knowing that our actions today will shape the world for generations to come. We must also recognize that addressing global challenges requires a long-term perspective and sustained effort. It is not enough to simply respond to crises as they arise; we must also invest in preventative measures and build resilience to future challenges. This means supporting education, research, and development in fields such as renewable energy, public health, and conflict resolution. It also means promoting policies that prioritize the well-being of people and the planet over short-term economic gains. By taking a holistic approach to global challenges, we can create a more just and sustainable world for all.

China has put forward a proposal for a shared future, emphasizing cooperation and collaboration among nations. This vision seeks to foster mutual understanding, respect, and peaceful coexistence to address global challenges.Through this proposal, China aims to promote sustainable development, economic prosperity, and cultural exchange on a global scale. By working together, countries can build a more harmonious and prosperous world for future generations. This proposal reflects China’s commitment to multilateralism and the belief that shared prosperity benefits all nations. It is a call for unity, solidarity, and collective action to create a better future for humanity.

Globalization has improved the allocation of production factors worldwide, including capital, information, technology, labor and management. As if connecting scattered lakes and creeks into an uninterrupted expanse of water, it draws nations out of isolation and away from the obsolete model of self-reliance, merging their individual markets into a global one and combining their respective experiences into world history.

As information technology advances with every passing day, most prominently in the fields of Internet, big data, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence, human exchanges have become deeper, broader, and more extensive than ever before, and countries are more interconnected and interdependent than at any point in the past. Globalization is not an option; it is the reality and the way of life. The global village is getting smaller – the longest distance between two places on earth has been reduced to a flight of no greater than 24 hours, and our planet is becoming flat – one tap on a mobile phone connects us to the other side of the world in a split second. This is an integrated world. Those who turn their back on it will have no place in it.

China’s proposal for a shared future has gained significant attention and support from various nations worldwide. The vision of cooperation and collaboration among countries has been seen as an effective means to address global challenges. This proposal emphasizes the importance of mutual understanding, respect, and peaceful coexistence, which are crucial elements in building a harmonious and prosperous world. Moreover, China’s initiative aims to promote sustainable development, economic prosperity, and cultural exchange on a global scale. By working together towards these goals, countries can create a better future for generations to come.

China’s commitment to multilateralism is reflected in this proposal, which highlights the belief that shared prosperity benefits all nations. It is indeed a call for unity, solidarity, and collective action towards achieving a better future for humanity.

The success of China’s proposal for a shared future will depend on the willingness of nations to work together towards common goals. This vision requires a shift in mindset from competition to cooperation, and from isolationism to openness. It is important for countries to recognize that their individual interests are intertwined with the interests of the global community. By working towards shared objectives, nations can create win-win situations that benefit all parties involved.

China’s proposal also highlights the need for dialogue and communication among nations, as well as respect for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. These principles are essential in building trust and promoting peaceful coexistence among countries. In addition, China’s emphasis on sustainable development is crucial in addressing pressing environmental issues such as climate change and pollution. Cooperation among nations is necessary to tackle these challenges and ensure a livable planet for future generations.

Overall, China’s proposal for a shared future provides a hopeful vision for the world, one that prioritizes collaboration over conflict and mutual benefit over individual gain. It is up to all nations to embrace this vision and work together towards a better future for humanity. To achieve the vision of a shared future proposed by China, it is essential for nations to work together towards common goals. This requires a change in mindset from competition to cooperation and from isolationism to openness. It is crucial for countries to recognize that their individual interests are interlinked with the interests of the global community. By working towards shared objectives, nations can create win-win situations that benefit all parties involved.

Furthermore, we must acknowledge that addressing global challenges is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Different regions and communities face unique challenges that require tailored approaches. It is essential to involve local stakeholders and empower them to take ownership of solutions that work for their specific context. This means investing in capacity-building and providing resources for local innovation and entrepreneurship. By promoting diversity and inclusivity in our approach to global challenges, we can ensure that everyone has a voice and a stake in creating a better future for all. Let us continue to work towards a more equitable, sustainable, and peaceful world for generations to come.

There is no iron law that dictates that a rising power will inevitably seek hegemony. This assumption represents typical hegemonic thinking and is grounded in memories of catastrophic wars between hegemonic powers in the past. China has never accepted that once a country becomes strong enough, it will invariably seek hegemony. China understands the lesson of history – that hegemony preludes decline. We pursue development and revitalization through our own efforts, rather than invasion or expansion. And everything we do is for the purpose of providing a better life for our people, all the while creating more development opportunities for the entire world, not in order to supersede or subjugate others.

The strong preying on the weak is not a way for humans to coexist. If the law of the jungle is imposed on human society, and the idea that “might makes right” prevails, the principle of sovereign equality will be fundamentally undermined, and world peace and stability will be severely endangered. In the age of globalization, all countries are interdependent and interconnected. Therefore the law of the jungle and the winner-takes-all mindset will lead nowhere – inclusive development for the benefit of all is the right path forward. China has consistently championed equity and justice, and remains committed to friendly cooperation with other countries, on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, in order to advance democracy in international relations.

Discrimination: Buratai calls for expulsion of Chinese supermarket

The TY Buratai Humanity Care Foundation has called for the expulsion of the Chinese family owners of the Abuja supermarket, which allegedly denied access to Nigerians.

The foundation, led by its chairman, Ambassador Ibrahim Dahiru Danfulani Sadaukin Garkuwan Keffi and Betara of Biu, expressed deep concern over the discriminatory practices of the supermarket, which only allows Chinese citizens to enter and purchase goods while barring Nigerians from doing the same.

The Grand Patron of the Foundation, His Excellency Ambassador Lt Gen Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Rtd) CFR, former Chief of Army Staff, condemned the discriminatory actions of the supermarket owners, likening it to racism. He emphasised that no foreign citizen should be denied his rights in Nigeria as long as he or she abides by the country’s laws.

Gen Buratai also questioned the audacity of foreigners dictating terms to bona-fide citizens on how to live or stay in their own country.

He further criticised the discriminatory policies of the supermarket owners, stating that there is no valid reason for a company in Nigeria to refuse to sell to Nigerians. He labelled the actions of the Chinese family-owned establishment as a clear case of racism and called for decisive action by the federal government against any individuals, foreign or Nigerian, who flout the rules and regulations of the nation.

  • A global community of shared future: The Chinese examples

A global community of shared future: The Chinese examples

    By Hammeed M. Bello, PhD

Institutional search for global peace and development has been on for decades, and is still ongoing. At different times, the world has seen the emergence of bodies like the United Nations, the European Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the BRICS group, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the African Union, the ECOWAS, the Belt and Road Initiative and Forum for China-Africa Cooperation, FOCAC among others.

The common denominator of all those bodies is the concern of how to make member countries, and by extension the world and its component parts, a much better place for increased stability, peace and prosperity. The goal of promoting unity, development, trade and cultural exchanges are integral to most of the bodies. The cumulative objective, as it were, is to make the global future safer, more secure and enterprising.

Recall that after the 2nd world war in 1945, the global community decided to float the United Nations to entrench more peace, security and development in the ravaged and emotionally stricken world. On the heels of World War II in 1945, nations were in ruins, and the world wanted peace. Representatives of 50 countries gathered at the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco, California in the United States of America between 25 April and 26 June 1945, and two months after, the UN Charter was drafted and signed, and the United Nations was created to help prevent another world war.

The UN officially began, on 24 October 1945 after its Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories.

Now, more than 75 years later, the United Nations is still working to maintain international peace and security, give humanitarian assistance to those in need, protect human rights, and uphold international law. The UN has also set sustainable development goals for 2030, in order to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all, including efforts to address climate action to limit global warming.

In recent times however, the authority of the UN in delivering its lofty mandates to the world has been challenged by recalcitrant states. We see in Israel’s war on Gaza for instance, the refusal by Israel to obey international humanitarian laws of which the UN is a key custodian. Major countries have at different times been accused of violating international laws, relying on their customary characteristics that make them less enforceable.

Much like the UN, but with local characteristics, the Communist Party of China has taken steps that hope to harness the world much closer for a shared future where peace and development can be accessed by many, if not all societies, and where tangible and concrete outcomes can be delivered to all. This is good news if, as China has promised, the goal of the global development initiatives will not be skewed to give it undue advantage over other countries whether in the short term or in the long run.

President Xi Jinping, at different times, has placed emphasis on a “win-win” ideology that will deliver a “shared future” to mankind. This does not sound like manipulative rhetoric because the Chinese President has demonstrated palpable commitments in providing alternative platforms to draw the world much closer with a promise not to interfere in the internal local affairs of participating countries.

In pursuit of this objective, the State Council Information Office of the People’s Republic of China, in September 2023 came up with a template that will help drive increased empowerment and prosperity for the world. The template identifies that humanity is at a Crossroads, and requires Interdependence which has been a prevailing trend throughout history.

According to the template, Global challenges call for global response, while the new era calls for new ideas that will speedily transform global society on a path of wealth and prosperity by profeering an answer to the call of the times and a blueprint to secure the future.

The template cites China’s efforts in introducing a new approach to international relations on the basis of equality of nations. Other key aspects highlighted in the template include the new features of global governance, opening up new prospects for international exchanges, and an outline of a new vision for building a better world.

Read Also: Americans pushing Chinese out of CAR for control of natural resources, locals allege

China’s ideas about a global community of shared future for mankind as captured in the template also highlights the importance of History and Cultural Traditions in human relations, and promoting the fine diplomatic traditions of New China, showcasing the best of traditional Chinese culture under the broad global vision of the Communist Party of China.

Incorporating the outstanding achievements of other civilizations is necessary for global inclusivity, according to the template.

The template also prescribes pressing ahead with a new type of economic globalization that will follow a peaceful development path, and foster a new type of international relations that will embrace more of true multilateralism that will promote the common values of humanity. In this respect, China’s action and contribution will involve promoting high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and implementing the three global initiatives which include the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative proposed by China to guide the advancement of human society across the three dimensions. Resonating and complementing each other, the initiatives have evolved into a crucial cornerstone for building a global community of shared future, offering China’s solutions to major challenges pertaining to peace and development for humanity.

The fundamental aim of the initiative is to accelerate the implementation of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Its core requirement is a people-centered approach, its foremost philosophy is united, equal, balanced, and inclusive global development partnerships, and its pivotal measure entails results-oriented actions to bolster stronger, greener, and healthier global development and jointly build a global community of development by working more with countries and regions of the world.

As observed recently by Cui Jianchun, the Ambassador of China to Nigeria in an article, in building a community with a shared future for mankind, the goal is to build an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world of lasting peace, universal security and shared prosperity, and that the pathway is promoting global governance that features extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefit. The guiding principle is to apply the common values of humanity, the basic underpinning lying in building a new type of international relations, with the strategic guidance coming from the implementation of the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and the platform for action is high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

In this respect, China seeks to bring countries together to meet challenges and achieve prosperity for all, and usher in a bright future of peace, security, prosperity and progress for our world. President Xi Jinping’s vision of a community with a shared future for mankind offers China’s solutions to meet global common challenges and jointly deliver a brighter future for the world, which has received the extensive support of African countries, including Nigeria.

Over the past decade, as noted by Ambassador Jianchun, building a community with a shared future for mankind has developed from a conceptual proposition to a scientific system; from a Chinese initiative to an international consensus, and from a promising vision to substantive actions. It has been included in resolutions of the UN General Assembly for seven consecutive years, extending to various regions and covering various areas, it has served as a glorious banner leading the progress of the times.

Regarding the Belt and Road Initiative as a road connecting civilizations for the New Era, concrete tangible outcomes can be found from Xi’an, China’s ancient capital at the foot of the Qinling Mountains to Lisbon, the European city on the continent’s western edge; from the coastal city Xiamen in southeastern China to the Port of San Antonio across the Pacific: the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is connecting countries across the globe, where people with different skin colors and speaking different languages proudly nurture their cultures. Living in a world of different civilizations, beliefs and customs, should we progress alone or together? And should we stay behind close doors or embrace one another? China’s answer is clear: Build a bridge of interaction and mutual learning, and make the BRI a road connecting different civilizations.

Over the past decade, Belt and Road partner countries have carried out diverse people-to-people exchanges and cooperation, which have become bridges for mutual cultural appreciation. Initiatives such as the Silk Road International League of Theaters, the International Alliance of Museums of the Silk Road, the Silk Road International Arts Festival, the Silk Road International Library Alliance and the Silk Road International Gallery Alliance had attracted close to 100 countries and international organizations by the end of 2022. Luban Workshop, a vocational training program, is today being conducted in more than 20 Asian, African and European countries to help cultivate a pool of high-caliber technical personnel for the local community. Chinese and foreign archaeologists are working together to explore the cultural relics of the ancient Silk Road and renew the exchanges along the Silk Road with modern-day cultural interactions. The BRI has built a platform for dialogue among civilizations, where the flowers of different civilizations bloom and shine together.

Part of China’s global development initiatives in Africa include the China-Africa Think Tank Forum, and the Forum for China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Recall that the 13th meeting of the China-Africa Think Tank Forum was concluded in Dar es Salaam with a message that the world is like a village with a shared future and understanding.

In what observers see as a springboard for the continent’s economic and industrialisation agenda, the forum was further focused on exploring China-Africa cooperation mechanisms, strategic initiatives and practical actions in the fields of industrialisation, agricultural modernisation, and human resources training among others.

Hosted by the Secretariat of the Chinese Follow-up Committee of the Forum in China-Africa Cooperation, it was a platform for an initiative on building China-Africa think tank cooperation network, which is in Chinese, English, and French, calling for the strengthening of China-Africa think tanks’ cooperation and a network promoting mutual understanding and common development between the two sides.
