  • Breaking News: Cholera hits Lagos, three dead

    The Lagos State Government has confirmed the outbreak of Cholera in the state.

    The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris who confirmed the development in Lagos on Wednesday that out of the 13 cases reported, three persons have died.

    Worst affected places are, Ajeromi, Apapa, Lagos Island, Oshodi and Surulere.

    The commissioner attributed the epidemic to contaminated wells, local food and non-washing of hands.

    He urged residents of the state to report any known case to the nearest health centre.


  • Cholera kills seven in Rivers community

    Govt denies outbreak

    Seven people have reportedly died of cholera in Kula, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

    The indigenes yesterday blamed the scourge on the water in the community.

    They called on the Rotimi Amaechi-led administration to come to their rescue.

    Sources said the victims, mostly children, died as a result of drinking contaminated water and poor sanitary conditions.

    An indigene, Anabs Sara-Igbe, said indigenes depended on borehole for drinking water, which he said was mostly non-functional.

    Sara-Igbe said: “This is a major source of worry for Kula people.

    “The government should work out modalities for a good source of water for the community.”

    The Commissioner for Health, Sampson Parker, could not be reached for comments.

    But when contacted, the Director of Public Health in the Ministry of Health, Akuro Okujagu, said the ministry is investigating the incident

    Okujagu said: “We are still investigating it, but right now, there is no such incident.”

     

  • Cholera kills three in Osun

    Three people have died of cholera in Ede North and South Local government Areas of Osun State.

    About 40 people have been hospitalised, following an outbreak of the disease.

    Commissioner for Health Mrs. Temitope Ilori said health personnel had been deployed in the area.

    She said at least three people have died.

    Mrs. Ilori said the government was on top of the situation. She said: “There was an outbreak of cholera in the two local government areas in Ede, but we are in control of the situation. Officials of the Rural Water Environment and Sanitation Agency (RUWESA) and the ministries of Environment and Health are working round the clock to bring the situation under control.”

    A resident, Alhaji Adefemi Sarafadeen, who is a member of the Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation in Ede, said some of the patients are at the Prime Hospital and Rombay Hospital in Ede.

  • Cholera, measles imminent in flood-ravaged areas – NEMA

    The National Emergency Management Agency has raised the alarm over a possible outbreak of epidemics in flood-ravaged states in the country.

    NEMA Coordinator, Abuja Operations Office, Ishaya Chonoko, listed the water borne diseases that could infect the people as cholera, Lassa fever, measles and other skin diseases.

    He spoke on Tuesday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, at a-two day sensitization and awareness raising programme on cerebro-spinal meningitis and other flood related diseases organized by NEMA for the people of the state.

    He said the agency’s fear was borne out of, “the fact that the flood waters had contaminated other natural sources of water in the various communities.”

    “The usage of this contaminated water by the people for drinking, bathing, washing due to shortage of potable water can lead to outbreaks,” he said.
