Awode, who clocked 60 on September 7, said the gift was to assist and boost their businesses, in line with his yearly programme and commitment to reduce poverty among members.

To ensure good use of the money, the foundation, he noted, would not give all cash to the beneficiaries, as part of it would go for materials and items depending on their business or trade.

“The Foundation made the decision based on previous years’ experience in which such money or grants received under RAF to empower the recipients were not usually used for the purpose the empowerment grant is meant for as the money is diverted to other things, thereby not achieving the purpose the Foundation was set up,” he noted.

Also, to celebrate the birthday, Awode had in May sponsored 75 people, consisting members of C&S Movement Church, associates, family members and friends on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, with all expenses paid.

Church to partner Oyo council in community development

Senior Pastor of Light of the World Mission Church, Femi Kajogbola, in Ibadan, Oyo State, has said the church will partner Ona Ara Local Government to provide succour to residents.

His message was delivered by associate pastors, Tejuoso Stephen and Oguntirin Taiwo during a visit to the council leadership, led by Chairman, Sanusi Adesina.

The church, which just  opened a branch in the council, sought to inform the leadership of its plan to partner it in development of communities in the council.

Kajogbola noted ‘’our mission is also to spread the  gospel of Christ and inform the leadership of our new branch, being the light of the world and salt of the earth is integral to our core responsibilities”

“We informed him the feat cannot be achieved alone and that we wish to partner the government to provide needs in the community,” he said.

Adesina praised the church’s  role in the society, and appreciated them for coming.

He said their move was a good step in the right direction, noting the council, under his leadership, built a pedestrian bridge for the people to ease movement in and out of the community.

He advised that any NGO or foundation seeking to help the communities should go through him, as this would enable them document the process, and grant facilitators publicity through its media team.

“This will not only bring them to light as a supporter of their administration through their initiatives but also educate the people on the importance of the project being done in the community.”

Leadership of the church promised that as they spread the light, they will ensure people are taken care of in the community

  • Return our school to church, old students tell govt

    By Ambrose Nnaji

The United Christian Secondary School Old Students’ Association (UCOSA), Apapa, Lagos State, has intensified efforts to get their alma mater back to its original owners – the Anglican, Baptist and Methodist churches, saying the government’s take-over of the school had put it in an unacceptable state.

Its President, Tony Iyare ,expressed confidence that after 16 years, their plea was getting the desired attention.

He told reporters in Lagos at a briefing to mark the 60th anniversary of the school, that the application for the demand of the school would be delivered to the Lagos State Ministry of Education.

Iyare said the school, then known as United Christian Secondary Commercial College, was founded in January 1959 by three missions – Anglican, Baptist and Methodist – to suit the needs of the Industrial Apapa Community. Hence the curriculum emphasised commercial subjects and secretarial studies at its inception.

However, the president said the school’s fortunes changed for the worse when government took over in 1975.

“Its lot has been on the downward slide since the change of ownership in 1975. The school, which was a high flier in both academics and sports further began to wane when it was relocated from its prime old site on Bombay Crescent to this less fancied site on Liverpool road,” he said.

Nevertheless, while waiting for the ownership change, the association urged the government to immediately clear the brothels and alcoholic shops constituting a menace around the school environment.

Iyare said they were constructed on drains, a violation of the environmental laws of the state.

“Against the backdrop of some recent ugly developments in the state and around the country, it has become imperative to ensure that students learn in very secured and safe condition”, he said.

The old students also urged government to extend the road leading to the School from Liverpool beyond the gate so the dumping of wrecked cars around the school’s entrance would stop.

“We want to implore the government to construct its new prototype 18- classroom block to replace the entire decrepit prefab, otherwise called Jakande buildings, dotting the School which are posing imminent danger to our students. This call has become urgent against the increasing rate of collapsed buildings in the state.

“We also want government support in our struggle to ensure that the School’s properties that have been lost to trespassers are urgently retrieved.”

  • ‘Why government, church must empower women’

Senior Pastor Fountain of Life Church, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, spoke with Omolara Akintoye on the Discovery for women outreach he founded over 20 years ago, which has become a rallying point for the empowerment of women. Excerpts:

What do you have to say about politics in the nation?

Politics today is fine at least we see more people getting interested, including the youth and the women. They may not make marks now but the interest is building. I believe we are in a positive direction of course.

Then another thing is that we need to pray for our politicians and that there will be unity in Nigeria. That it does not matter who gets there but the fear of God and love of brethren should be uppermost in their minds. If we don’t see these two qualities in a man or woman, then they are not qualified to govern us.

What should be the role of women in nation building?

When your home is stable then the nation is stable. But when homes are not stable, there will be problems. There is no future because they will raise vagabonds so the women must be equipped. Yes I’m interested in my children. I stay with them and I oversee what they do.

But much more, my wife and I could remember when our children were growing up. Some were trained here and some abroad. I’ll call them once a week but my wife (of blessed memory) will call them every day. So most of the things I didn’t know about them she knew everything.

We must educate the women. Mind you a woman that is not educated can only take the child as far as she has.

What inspired the discovery for women outreach?

First, it was an inspiration. Then second, while I was growing up I saw the way my father handled my mother. They didn’t have much and they were not also highly educated but they were able to complement each other.

My mother was such a strong woman. She put her hands into everything that could sustain the home while my father went to work. Then I asked myself what if the two were better educated?

So I made up my mind to put in my very best to sustain my marriage. That is why if you could recall my late wife, not only was she empowered, she also empowered others.

Even my current wife is doing similar things and my daughter as well. So we have quite a number of women in the church who are very strong. I love to see strong women.

What is Discovery for Women all about?

It has been ongoing: It is aimed at encouraging women, reminding them of the reasons for their existence. A woman is created to be a helpmate for man. So the woman was created adequately to provide the support that the man needs and to have dominion here on earth.

Even the United Nations has realised that women are not being given the needed attention. You want to change the society, you want to stabilise the economy, then educate the woman because that will in turn educate their children as well as nurturing their children.

So that is why we give a lot of attention to the women. What we do is to help them be the best they can be, supporting humanity and making humanity to do what God has called us to do here on earth.

What will be different with this year’s edition?

This rally is tagged New Possibilities: Never believe that because your life is defined by ebbs and flows and usually when you get to the ebbs there is tendency for you to get stuck. But the good news is that you don’t have to get stuck, you can have a continuous flow in Christ.

So we want to encourage people that if you experience setbacks, disappointment or things are not measuring up as planned, this usually truncates a lot of people’s dreams and drive for the future. We don’t want that for our women, even though they suffer setbacks. Ours is to encourage and equip them adequately with all that they need to know.

At the end of the programme what kind of women do you expect to see?

We expect to see women who will rise above challenges of the moment, not just rising above the challenges but also carrying the children along and community as well. Take for instance Rwanda, in the beginning of the genocide it is amazing to discover that it was the women who decided that they with revive their country.

For the first time they have a National Assembly dominated by women and today talk of development and progress in Africa, you want to point to Rwanda. That is what women are created for: fill in where there are gaps, help the man to realise his stands again to forge ahead. So the man goes fighting, the woman stays back to stabilise things. So the woman is a true help meet.

What Nigeria has to do is go give her people proper education. In the North, especially the women otherwise the problem that is perennial in North will persist. Our women need proper education.

Take for instance where villages were attacked by terrorists in the North. The men go to fight once they are gone but the women are left behind with the children. You want to preserve posterity, want to project into the future, develop and advance, empower the woman.

Every woman should be empowered. She should be able to stand for herself and by herself before she even gets married. So when she is married, she is empowered in all areas, submitting to her husband. The two are one and they have a formidable front.

Then you can imagine the future of their products and their children. Unlike now that with the exception of very few of them, most Nigerian women are just subservient, which is very bad. They are being used as baby factories but when a woman is educated they will know that they are not baby- making machines.

She has her life and she has her future. These are the kinds of teachings that we give them in the course of the programme. Take hold of yours from a biblical point of view. Deborah, for instance, when the nation had completely lost direction, Deborah stood up and began to lead her people. So you begin to understand why God says a man needs a true helpmeet.

Yes the man needs a helper but any plan for the men as well?

Oh yes we have ‘Discovery for Men’ and our first rally for this year is being held this March. We have been running this programme for over 20 years. Yes it is important that while you are talking to the women, we also need to talk to our men as well.

As a matter of fact  we have two rallies which will be organised in the church, then we are taking it to the communities to encourage men who are already trained, to rise up and nurture other men. Men needs to be encouraged because they get easily discouraged much more than women.

What is the church doing to ensure that government empowers women as well?

Well, we do our best in the sense that we advertise our programmes and also collaborate with government as much as possible. For instance, we have a foundation where we reach out to young girls that are battered and abused.

In fact, most of them were sent to us from Alausa, here in Lagos. Also we have the Fountain Initiative, where we empower women in Business. We also take off men, women and children under the bridge to empower them and reunite them with their family members.

Today we have success stories of many of them that have graduated from the universities through the church scholarship programme and some are still in school.

We also partner with UNESCO and through the Lagos State government we go to prisons, providing men and women with advocacy programme for them not to lose hope while in prison and when they come out of prison, some of them come back to us and we do all we could to re-integrate them properly into the society by empowering them all round.

  • Disquiet in Abuja church over pastor’s extramarital affair

THE survival of a popular Abuja church is under threat after a confession made by the presiding pastor that he had a child outside wedlock and had divorced his wife because she was determined to make the incident public.

The popular pastor had tried to justify his action by saying that his wife was the first to engage in an extramarital affair from which she bore a child. He argued that while he protected his wife from public embarrassment by keeping the matter secret, his wife was not willing to reciprocate the gesture when his turn came.

He told the congregation that he had to tell them about it as a sign of remorse expected of a man of God who had erred, adding that he should not be condemned but commended for his forthrightness in bringing the matter to their knowledge.

But many of the church members are said not to be impressed with both the pastor’s confession and the erotic mess in which his family is enmeshed. Many of them are said to be threatening to quit the church, having lost confidence in the man of God.

  • Why churches must condemn corruption, by Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday urged the church to step up its condemnation of corruption and illegally acquired wealth.

Osinbajo lamented that corruption has been the country’s biggest problem and causes a multitude of child deaths yearly.

He warned that Christians would fail to positively influence the country unless they unless they committed themselves to living like the biblical salt of the earth.

Osinbajo was the guest minister at a special service of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)’s The Open Door Parish, Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos.

The Vice President’s longtime friend Aina Ololade Salami is the Pastor-in-charge of the parish.

Speaking on the topic The church and the destiny of the nation, Osinbajo berated Church leaders who, through their teachings, “sometimes give the impression that there is no need for hard work.”

He urged Christendom to remember the Biblical command for people to pray for their leaders like the Israelites prayed for Esther before she met the Persian King Ahasuerus and saved her people from genocide.

Osinbajo said: “…I do not hear very often that the church criticises corruption and corrupt people. I don’t hear very often that there is condemnation, because, when you look at it, the greatest problem that our country has is corruption.

“People stealing directly from the treasury is what exposed in so many cases that there is so much poverty in the land, the leadership stealing directly from the treasury.

“The greatest cause of death is corruption because when you look at the number of children who die between the ages of zero and five, who should have been provided with medical care and the money has been stolen, some people say oh there are many kidnappings, many this and that, but the greatest cause of death in our country is corruption.

“If you look at poverty, from 2012, almost 110,000 children die of diarrhea-related illness yearly. Why? The resources that should be used for medical care is stolen.

“So, if the church does not stand up and condemn corruption, if the church doesn’t say, ‘if we suspect that you this man, you are a public officer but you have money that you shouldn’t have we’ll ostracise you’, then it’ll be difficult for us to play our role.”

He advised Christians worried by the idea of an Islamist agenda not to be afraid but to dutifully obey the Great Commission in Matthew 28:16-20.

Osinbajo said: “I was saying to a group of Christian leaders the other day that I as a pastor, long before I was appointed Vice President, I attended the (RCCG) Holy Ghost Service regularly, as a matter of fact before I became Vice President I never missed the Holy Ghost Service once in 15 years, not once. I’ve missed the Holy Ghost Service now maybe once or twice.

“As Vice President I attend, even in Abuja, all of the (Christian) gatherings and these are big gatherings at the Abuja National Stadium.

“Even look at the Holy Ghost Night, it’s televised all over the world, I as Vice President am standing there everybody sees me all over the world.

“I said to the leaders, can you imagine a situation where President Muhammadu Buhari every month, gathers in Sokoto, with hundreds of thousands of Mullahs, what would we say? What would the leaders say? There would be panicking.”

The Vice President explained he has been able to survive in politics without compromising his religious beliefs by trying to live as salt of the earth.

He narrated an incident while he was Lagos State Attorney-General when he held a meeting in a room filled with cigarette smoke and how God helped him to understand his role as the biblical salt.

Osinbajo said: “But, I was so upset by the fact that there was so much smoke and when I was leaving the place my entire body smelled of cigarettes; my hair, my clothes, my entire body.

“As I was leaving, the first thought I had was that why should I be in the company of these people who are smoking cigarettes and pipes? Why? Is it not wrong? Should I be in their company?

“After all I’m a Christian, a born again Christian. A pastor. And then the Lord spoke to me: ‘You’re the salt. If you don’t get into the soup, what will happen if you don’t get into the soup?

“It struck me immediately that my role was not to look condescendingly at what may be the problem.

“My role was to get involved in it, fight as much as I could with the power and the grace of the almighty God and God enabled us at the time and we were able to do something.”

Several dignitaries at the service included the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi; Olubeshe of Ibeshe Oba Richard Abayomi Ogunsanya; member representing Ikorodu federal constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Jimi Benson and Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Sanai Bolanle Agunbiade, among others.
