The Ogun Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ), Mr Clement Oladele, has warned drivers to desist from using worn-out tyres when driving to save lives and property.

Oladele gave the warning in Ota on Thursday at the 2017 Ember Months Safety Campaign organised by the Sango-Ota Command in collaboration with Shell Nigeria Gas.

The campaign had as its theme: Right to Life on the highway: Not Negotiable.

Represented by Mrs Bridget Asekhuno, Ogun Head of Administration and Human Resources of FRSC, he said the use of exhausted tyres had been a major contributor to road crashes in the country.

The sector commander noted that safety on our highways during the ember months was a collective responsibility of all road users.

‘‘Safety on our roads required our collective responsibilities and we all have one role and the other to play in reducing crashes,’’ he said.

The sector commander implored all road users to be cautious as there would be increase of vehicular movements during the ember months.

Oladele, however, warned drivers to desist from overloading and speeding to ensure safety of passengers to their various destinations.

He advised road users to watch carefully before entering main and minor roads to minimise accidents.

Mr Kunle Oguntoyinbo, Sango-Ota Unit Commander of FRSC, urged drivers to ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles before embarking on any journey.

Oguntoyinbo also warned vehicle owners to desist from driving under the influence of alcohol and avoid speeding to stay alive.

‘’The higher the speed the higher will be the crash which will also increase the number of causalities,’’ he said.

The unit commander, however, advised drivers to install speed limiting devices in their vehicles to reduce speeding and crashes.

FRSC commences Sallah special patrol in Ogun

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun is to commence a special patrol between Aug. 30 to Sept. 6 to enhance free flow of traffic during the Sallah festivities.

The Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Mr Clement Oladele, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that the exercise would ensure safety of lives and reduce gridlocks across the state.

NAN reports that the Muslim faithful would be celebrating the Eid-kabir on Sept. 1 and Sept. 2 across the country.

According to Oladele, the FRSC would mobilise its personnel in ensuring that people travelling to different destinations across the state do not encounter hindrances.

“We are going to join hands together to ensure that minimum obstructions were experienced across all principal corridors of the state.

“The personnel would be deployed to areas like Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Odegbolu, Ogunmakin, Itori and Ota to curb excesses of drivers and reduce crashes to its barest level,” he said.

FRSC wants FG to provide loan facilities for truck owners to boost operations

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, has appealed to the Federal Government to provide loan facilities for truck owners through Bank of Industry to boost their operations.

Mr Clement Oladele, the Sector Commander of FRSC, made the plea on Thursday at the FRSC 2017 Annual Public Enlightenment Rally in Ota.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the rally was organised by the Sango-Ota Unit Command, in conjunction with the Shell Nigeria Gas with the theme: “Speed Down: Save Lives”.

According to Oladele, provision of the loan facilities for fleet operators will reduce the frequent breakdown of their old vehicles on the roads.

“This gesture will ensure the use of new and road worthy vehicles and also promote safety on our highways,” he said.

Oladele said that the frequent breakdown of their rickety vehicles was majorly responsible for gridlocks on the highways and causing fatigue for FRSC officials.

The FRSC official described the rally as apt and timely as it coincides with the Eid-Kabir festival, and moreso that the Ember Months were approaching.

He said that this was part of the FRSC strategies to enlighten the public on safety issues to reduce auto crashes in the country.

Oladele, however, warned undisciplined drivers to desist from driving against traffic to save lives and property on the highways.

“Any driver caught driving against traffic will not only be booked, but prosecuted,” he said.

The sector commander said that FRSC had commenced special operation along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway to check excesses of some drivers driving against traffic.

Also, Mr Adekunle Oguntoyinbo, the Sango-Ota Unit Commander of FRSC, advised motorists to desist from reckless driving that could put the lives of other road users in danger.

“Motorists should desist from buying used tyres, it is one of the major causes of road crashes in the country,” Oguntoyinbo said.

He also advised drivers to stop using cell phones while driving now that the ember months are approaching.

FRSC inaugurates 85 pupils into safety club

THE Ogun Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Clement Oladele, has inaugurated over 85 pupils from various schools into road safety club.

The event with the theme: “My child, my tomorrow” was organised by Agbado/Ifo Unit Command of the Corps, held at Ebenezer Comprehensive High School, Agbado, a suburb of the state.

He said it was high time teachers and parents engaged in proclaiming safety among the children at the tender age, saying it would not depart from them when they start driving on the road.

Commander Oladele said road traffic breakers do not only cause problems for themselves but also to other road users. He noted that crashes, most especially involving children, would have reduced to the barest level, if drivers consider their safety in all aspects.

He, however, implored children to join in proclaiming the road safety among their parents and correct them whenever they are going contrary to traffic rules and regulation.

The sector commander said the road safety club would offer the children the opportunity to make better use of the highways in the future, saying “It is important we teach the children safety rules so that they would respect rules guarding the highways in the future. This could only guarantee the safety of live and property on the road.  Highways do respect anybody irrespective of status, it only respects the rules and regulation guided the using of it.”, he added.

The Unit Commander, Asst. Corps Commander (ACC), Chinwendu Iwuoha, said the inauguration was organised to enable children fully involved in road safety activities, educate and teach them safety issues, for them to remain in it when they start driving on the highways.

She said the initiative was part of the FRSC’s 2017 corporate strategic goals to catch the children young, to reduce road crashes.

She said the Corps would continue to organise safety rallies for the children to inculcate safety tips into their heart, adding that it would enable them to become road safety ambassadors in the future.

Commander Chinwendu said children would be able to tutor others on safety tips, as well as educate their parents on the use of highways.
