CNG: FG rolls out 10,000 kits across Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna, more

As part of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative, the Federal Government has created the Conversion Incentive Programme geared towards ensuring that the CNG conversion was pushed out, especially through the mass transit and commercial vehicle routes.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative was set up by President Bola Tinubu to create not only the platform for CNG conversion but also to ensure that it was adopted, accepted and implemented.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas campaign initiative kicked off in Lagos which attracted representatives from the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Tricyclists popularly known as ‘Keke Napepe’ among others from across the Southwest including Ogun, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo States, gathered in their numbers to take advantage of the initiative

The Commercial Operations Manager, PICNG, Omoh Omoukhuede, said to kickstart the initiative, the federal government had started off deploying 10,000 kits over the next couple of weeks.

“We have started that today with 10,000 kits going out to different locations including Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna, and Abuja as well as the Lagos state. We are here at the Portland Ojota Conversion Center as part of the First Come, First Served Conversion Incentive Program with regards to PiCNG”. This means that the CNG is here to stay, Omoukhuede added.

The federal government under the watch of President Tinubu had given the directive that a million cars be converted between now and 2027. The Commercial Operations Manager said the directive was on the right track. “We believe that if we keep pushing through this incentive program, especially touching the hearts and minds of the pockets of people, especially Nigerians in the transportation system, we’ll be able to achieve this, he added.

The Commercial Operations Manager said it was an opportunity to push through the CNG initiative starting with the mass transit operators. He said it was very key to ensure that the mass transit system in Lagos, in these other states and also nationwide were keyed into the project, especially from a transportation point of view citing the implications of the present fuel crisis in the country.

“We all know the impact of the fuel price, we understand fully that we have alternatives, gas is one of them”, he voiced.

Omoukhuede narrated that for you to fill up your car right now; it’s going to cost you an arm and a leg. But if you convert to CNG, you’re looking at savings of almost 80 per cent in comparison to how much you actually spend on petrol.

“Just to give you an instance, for you to fill up your normal Toyota four-cylinder car, you’re talking roughly between, well then it was 20, 35, now it’s going up to about 40, 45, 50”, he explained.

But for CNG, you will not spend anything more than 5,000 naira. And you will cover pretty much the same amount of distance as you would if you fill up your car, he stated.

“This is quite spectacle for a lot of people to actually tap into. We urge the private sector as well to come in, to also support this initiative”, he appealed adding that the federal government cannot do it alone.

The Chief Operating Officer, Portland Gas Limited, CNG, Michelle Ejiofor said introducing the CNG into the vehicle, and retrofitting it, actually gives a better emissions as well as it reducing the cost of transportation adding that’s a cleaner energy, and cleaner source of oil.

According to Ejiofor, if we have a lot of the mass transit vehicles being retrofitted with the CNG, it will lower the cost of food, cost of transportation, and then Nigerians get to smile actually.

While calling on all Nigerians to embrace the federal government initiative, Michelle commended the government for also now collaborating with different conversion centers who had been given the mandate to convert these various vehicles into CNG.

She disclosed that the center had received 50 kits where it’s going to convert 50 commercial vehicles into CNG.

At the moment we have over 30 vehicles, so we have a mark of 50. Once we hit the mark of 50, then we have to close adding it’s a free initiative given to the mass transit by the federal government.

Aside that CNG is a safe gas, Michelle added that it’s safer than the petrol combustion; it reduces emissions, as well as promoting cleaner energy adding it’s going to be on the first-come, first-served basis.

“So for the first-come, first-served program, we have called on various vehicles to come, now, these vehicles will be inspected, will be diagnosed.

Now, the vehicles that actually pass the test will be keyed into the system for the actual conversion. So if your vehicle doesn’t pass the test, then it means you would need to step aside, and maybe if you have minor repairs to do, then you can go ahead and do that and wait for the next program”, Michelle explained.

Basically, we have a diagnostic machine, and then we have the engineers on ground that would inspect your vehicles physically and also using the machine, so once you’re good to go, then we key in you for the conversion, she further added.

FG begins free CNG conversion for 150 commercial vehicles in Kaduna

…as three conversion centres receive kits

To mitigate the economic impact of the fuel subsidy removal, the federal government has initiated the conversion of 150 commercial vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Kaduna State.

The process began over the weekend at three accredited conversion centres in the state, with the vehicles receiving free kits, including cylinders and other accessories, from the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi).

Mr. Thomas Ayu, P-CNGi’s Coordinator of Logistics and Supply Chain, delivered the conversion kits to Rolling Energy, one of the centres located in Kakau along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway.

He explained that the program is designed to support transporters and unions by converting their vehicles to a more efficient, economical, and safe energy source.

Ayu highlighted that the initiative is a collaboration between the Federal Government and private companies like Rolling Energy, which is handling the vehicle conversions.

He assured the public of the safety and efficiency of CNG, noting that it is cheaper, cleaner, and more efficient than traditional fuel.

The goal is to encourage widespread adoption of CNG and its benefits.

He said: “What we are doing today is the handing over of kits and cylinders for the conversion initiative of Mr. President to our transport sector. Rolling Energy is one of our partners that is converting vehicles in the transport sector on behalf of our programme.

“We have various kits here. We have kits for six cylinders and for four cylinders in line with what Mr President wants Nigerians and the transport sector to enjoy as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy. P-CNGi is converting cars for transport companies for free. Both cylinders, kits and cost of conversion are free.

“So we are calling on transporters, and unions to take advantage of this programme to come forth and convert their vehicles. For Kaduna state in this programme, we have 150 kits and 150 cylinders. We are going to provide more kits and more cylinders in the coming months. We are targeting to give more than 10,000 kits this month across the country.

“Our mandates are not for personal cars at the moment but strictly for people in the transport sector. We have not started converting private individual vehicles or organizations but people only in the transport sector so that the impact of fuel subsidy removal will not give them that effect.

“CNG is a clean energy. It’s clean, cheaper effective in consumption compared to fuel. So, for people who are having fear of gas explosions as a result of carrying gas in their vehicles around, I can assure them that there is nothing to worry about. People should come out en masse to convert their cars,” he said.

Receiving the kits, Rolling Energy’s Lead Station and Technical Services, Mohammed Abubakar Sadiq said, centre had already screened the 50 vehicles to be converted at centre and that, and the centre was ready for the exercise.

FG begins installation of 110 free CNG kits in Ogun commercial vehicles

Federal Government (FG) on Saturday began the installation of 110 free Compressed Natural Gas kits in commercial vehicles in Ogun State under the auspices of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P -CNGI).

It also trained 13 technicians to handle the conversion for commercial vehicle owners in the state.

Installation of the free kits was in furtherance of the government’s commitment to achieving the conversion of one million PMS or diesel-powered vehicles to CNG-enabled engines by 2027 under the Conversion Incentive Programme  (CIP) initiative.

The kits comprising 20 pieces of 75 litres and 90 pieces of 65 litres capacity cylinders were distributed to two entities that had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the P-CNGi.

Addressing newsmen at the conversion Centre at Quarry Road, Abeokuta, the Director of Vehicle Inspection Service, Ministry of Transportation, Ogun State, Engr. Ademehin Olugboyega described the cylinder as safe, bullet and accident proof as well as being certified by the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON).

Ademehin said there are three conversion centres in the state – two in Abeokuta and one in Mowe – Ibafo corridor, stressing that more will be created soon to cover other parts of the state.

He said any benefiting commercial vehicle has to undergo inspection to ascertain whether it is fit to be converted for the use of the CNG or not.

Adetimehin explained that a 75 -liters CNG filled cylinder will cover a range of 150 kilometres journey, thereby contributing to the reduction of transportation fare as envisaged by the federal government following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

“The cylinder is molded not welded and is as thick as 60 mm, bulletproof, accident proof, and cannot cause any explosive. In Abeokuta here we have two refilling stations presently and one at Ibafo. To install a kit for a petrol engine it takes 4-5 hours but for a diesel engine, it would take 3 days”.

Commenting on the viability and economic advantages of the CNG transportation system, the Operation Manager of Nigerian Gas and Transport Solution Limited (NGTSL), the P-CNGI’s technical partner, Ali Manager expressed confidence that CNG enabled transportation system remains the best thing that should happen to the Nigerian economy as at present.

“Out of my 17 years’ experience in the gas industry, I can tell you that if a taxi driver runs on gas in approximately two years he can buy a new car for himself.

“The first thing is that you (Nigeria) have your own gas company, you will be an independent company in terms of energy unlike other countries that import and rely on others and this will bring a bigger change to this country.

A representative of one of the conversion partners; Nexgen Automobile, Toyosi Oluwasesan, an Automotive technician, confirmed receipt of 50 CNG conversion kits, stressing that three (3) automobile technicians were also trained from his workshop.

Also speaking on the project, the state chairman of one of the transportation unions; the National Union of Road Transport Workers Union (NURTW), Adewale Yàtò, represented by Ahmed Bankole hailed the FG on the P-CNG initiative.

Adewale said the initiative will drive the transport fares down in the state and improve profitability in their business, saying the use of the CNG compliance engine is economical and leaving the union with no option than reducing the transportation fare across the state.

He explained the P-CNGI has liberalised the conversion process by dealing directly with commercial drivers instead of going through their unions.

According to him: “We expect that next that the next round of this project we will be having first come, first serve window at least once in a month and ensure this is an opportunity for commercial drivers who are not necessarily to sitting down with their union, vehicles, union bus that can just drive up without knowing anybody get converted.”

He recalled that in August as a response to the different protests across the country,  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed there should be one million  conversion kits available for free for the commercial sector or at deep discounts for the ride  share industries to enable transportation fare to be moderated across the country over the next couple of years.

He said it is a technical and logistic task to get it across to Nigerians because the conversion kits must be installed in the vehicles in a safe and reliable manner.

He said the P-CNGI so far has signed with over 75 conversion partners in eight state of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Edo, Delta, Kogi, Nassarawa, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Kaduna.

He added that the initiative will be adding nine states in the next eight weeks.

He said the reason the CNG cannot be activated overnight in every state is because of the limitation in terms of where CNG can be dispensed to vehicles.

  • Let’s have more CNG stations

    Let’s have more CNG stations

    • By Nelson Ekujumi

Sir: For decades, Nigeria and Nigerians have grappled with the crisis in our oil sector, ranging from dysfunctional refineries, importation, pipeline vandalism, oil theft, fluctuating and recurring hike in price as a result of global price of crude oil which keeps fluctuating due to international market dynamics.

This crisis has impacted negatively on our lives as the prices of goods and services which keeps rising are fundamentally determined by logistics cost and it has also engendered acrimony between successive governments and the citizenry for decades.

Therefore, it is imperative for a government and people who want to permanently resolve this perennial crisis, to seek an alternative means which is cleaner, safer, cheaper and affordable to not only bring down the prices of goods and services, but have zero effect in depleting the ozone layer and destroying our environment.

Enter Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), a natural and environmentally friendly source of energy to fuel our cars, buses, and other automobiles at a cheaper, safer, affordable and pocket friendly price for consumers.

On a recent visit to a CNG dispensing station located in Agidingbi, Alausa area of Lagos State, one saw first-hand vehicles that have been converted to CNG drive into the station for fuelling with ease, while vehicles using fossil fuel were subjected to the inconveniences that come with it.

The CNG attendant informed that the station has been servicing vehicles for over two months now.

The price of the CNG per litre is N230, so if we compare the price of fossil fuel today at the rate of between N868 – N1100 per litre, we can see that the savings that will accrue to a vehicle owner and the impact on the prices of goods and services will be in the positive.

One is aware of the commitment and relentless efforts of the Presidential Committee on Compressed Natural Gas PiCNG to create awareness around the transition to this cleaner source of energy and also its tour and public engagements with states governments as well as the Nigerian public across the federation. One is also aware that PiCNG) has also been meeting with stakeholders in the automobile, transportation, and petroleum business on the feasibility of establishing CNG pump stations across the country and that project, from all available evidence, is going on steadily.

The priority being given to public transportation stakeholders by the Bola Tinubu administration to convert to CNG at a zero cost gladdens the heart as it will contribute substantially to bringing down the prices of goods and services that have been impacted negatively by high transportation costs.

One calls for more CNG stations to be set up even in the remotest parts of our country so that we all can be beneficiaries of it.
