    • 1 Million Free Conversion Kits Ordered for Commercial Vehicles Over the Next 18 Months

    • Immediate Distribution of 10,000 Free Kits Begins This Week to Transport Associations

In a strategic move to reduce fuel costs and provide Nigerians with an affordable alternative to petrol and diesel, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has enabled Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to be available for vehicles at N230 per litre. This initiative provides a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol, which currently sells for over N900 per litre, reflecting the President’s commitment to lowering the cost of living and alleviating the pressures from fuel subsidy removal.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), which was launched under President Tinubu’s directive, is set to deliver wide-reaching benefits to Nigerians by significantly cutting fuel costs. The introduction of CNG as a fuel source aligns with the government’s drive towards energy diversification, and is designed to bring immediate relief to Nigerians, especially those who depend on transport for their livelihood.

As part of this initiative, President Tinubu has ordered 1 million free CNG conversion kits to be distributed to commercial vehicles involved in transporting people, food, and goods. These kits, along with free installation, will be rolled out over the next 18 months, helping the transport sector quickly transition to CNG and take advantage of the significantly lower fuel prices. The distribution of these kits will be carried out in collaboration with key partners, ensuring nationwide accessibility.

Immediate Action: 10,000 Free Kits This Week

In the first phase of the initiative, PCNGi will begin the immediate distribution of 10,000 free conversion kits this week. These kits will be provided at no cost to transport operators through key national transport associations, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Moove, UBER, and the Kaduna State Transport Authority (KSTA). This will enable commercial drivers to switch their vehicles to run on CNG, thus easing the cost burdens for both transporters and the public.

The distribution process is supported by PCNGi in partnership with NIPCO Gas, which will manage the conversion process through a network of authorized conversion centers across Nigeria. These centers will provide the necessary infrastructure and services to ensure a smooth transition for vehicles switching to CNG.

Commitment to Cheaper, Cleaner, and Sustainable Energy

By switching to CNG, Nigeria is embracing a cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable fuel alternative that benefits both the economy and the environment. The government’s goal is to distribute the full 1 million conversion kits by the end of 2025, ensuring that Nigeria’s commercial transport sector is fully equipped to adopt CNG and reduce dependence on costly petrol and diesel.

For more details on the conversion centers and to access the full list of active centers, please visit: https://pci.gov.ng.

This initiative reflects President Tinubu’s broader vision for a more resilient and economically sound Nigeria, providing citizens with a practical solution to rising fuel costs while promoting sustainable energy practices.

  • How to deepen CNG penetration, by operators

How to deepen CNG penetration, by operators

The development of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has been slow in Nigeria because it is a capital intensive project.

Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), President, Dr. Billy Harry, who made this known to The Nation on phone weekend, said it costs between $500,000 to $1.500 million to build a CNG point in a station.

“It is expensive to start. You need $500,000 to $1.5million to invest in one infrastructure,” said Harry.

He said despite the huge capital the business requires to take off, banks are reluctant to lend to investors in the field.

The PETROAN President said that upon the introduction of the CNG in 2021, the Muhammadu Buhari’s administration introduced a funding programme.

Recalled that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced the National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP) in 2020 to promote the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Nigeria

As part of this programme, the CBN launched two credit intervention funds in 2021 to support the development of CNG and LPG infrastructure and distribution: N50 billion Intervention Fund for Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Retail Distributors of CNG and LPG.

But according to Harry, not up to three companies could access the funds owing to the conditions the apex bank put in place for it.

Besides, he said  the President Bola Tinubu-led government has also established the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) which is domiciled in the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The Federal Government is expected to fund with funds generated from  a pool of contributions and fines, including: 0.5 per cent paid by each oil marketing company on every litre of petroleum products imported into the country.

The government is also to raise the funds from fines paid by oil and gas producing companies as penalties for flaring gas.

Harry said “There is a fund in place right now: Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF). Again, it is just the requirement.”

He urged the government to lower the requirements for accessing it because the commercial banks are not responding to their requests for funding CNG.

“Honestly, the government needs to put funding in place for it,” Harry stressed.

He said the CNG should be the immediate alternative to the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) that its price is becoming unaffordable.

Harry revealed that over 700 retail outlets belonging to members of his association have been profiled for the CNG.

The President urged the government to mobilise the companies to take advantage of the present energy market situation in the country to develop the CNG.

He said the most certain way to fund the investment in CNG development is through government funding because the officer-takers cannot meet up with the funding.

Harry lamented that “Banks are not forthcoming so we are unable to add meaningful value to the CNG.”

Similarly, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) National President, Alhaji Abubakar Maigandi also shared the same opinion that the CNG is a capital intensive project for people to venture into easily.

He said the commercial outfit of the association NipCo is doing great in the business while the individual companies are lagging behind.

He revealed that being a new business the marketers are reluctant to key into it until there is a huge number of converted vehicles to attract them into the business.

Maigandi also urged the government to intensify its advocacy for the CNG development in the country through the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGI).

Subsidy removal: Fed Govt donates 20 CNG buses to Oyo govt

Federal Government yesterday handed over 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to Oyo State Government.

The initiative, according to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal and promote a safer, cleaner and reliable country.

Speaking at the event held at Pacesetter Transport Services (PTS) office in Ibadan, the President, represented by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Programme Director, Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi), Mr Michael Oluwagbemi, said the initiative was one of the testimonies of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said the President was concerned about making life easy for Nigerians, having discovered the importance of transportation towards the development of the nation’s economy.

He noted that the deployment of CNG buses was to address issues affecting Nigerians, particularly on petrol importation, among others.

According to him, the deployment of the buses was to end the era of enriching the rich alone, whom he described as ‘cabitocrat’ for the benefit of everyone.

He said the compressed natural gas was a source of fuel abundance in Nigeria, to ameliorate hardship.

“President Tinubu is asking us to use our gas to thrive in transportation, industries, produce more foods and fertilisers as well as other things that will make life easier for the people.

“We are beginning to do the right thing, but this requires us to taste some pains. We can’t go back to subsidise our own impoverishment. As a team, we are determined to show our commitment.

“We are here to present 20 buses as a sustainable partnership with Pacesetter Transport Service (PTS) to generate income because they are assets. We can ensure that the future of Oyo State is brighter as well as Nigeria.”

The Chairman and Sole Administrator of PTS, Ibrahim Salami, said CNG bus was the best approach by the Federal Government to solve hardship being experienced by Nigerians as a result of removal of fuel subsidy.

He, however, described bringing the buses to the state as remarkable, which, according to him, would help to ease people’s burden.

Special Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde on Environment Ademola Aderinto said CNG was a cheaper form of energy, noting that the initiative would give a longer and healthier life, as it would also prevent emission of carbon monoxide caused by combustion engines.

Tinubu launches conversion incentive for CNG in Ibadan

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday launched Conversion Incentive Programme (CIP) for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The initiative, according to the President, was to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal and promote safer, cleaner and a reliable country.

The President, represented by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Programme Director, Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi), Michael Oluwagbemi, said the initiative was one of the testimonies to Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He urged Nigerians to take advantage from opportunities in CNG sector, saying Nigeria was at the course of revolution by using CNG.

Tinubu said Nigerians should not doubt the initiative, adding that they should rather give the nation the opportunity to leverage on its own resources.

He lamented that the nation had been depending on imported and subsidised petroleum products, putting the destiny, growth and economy of the nation in the hands of third party nations.

The President said: “Nigeria as a country has continued to pay for expensive PMS and diesel that are affecting our health and finances. The better way is for us to use what we have that is cleaner, cheaper, safer and more reliable.

“This natural gas is everywhere across the nation. Thirty of 36 states have natural gas reserves. We have enough gas reserves to last us for more than 100 years.

“To translate these gases either for transportation, fuelling generators or our industries is simpler than building a refinery.

“Dangote Refinery has about 650,000 barrels processing capacity per day, which translates to about 100 million litres of petrol per day. This is equivalent to about 36 million vehicles. If you are to power 36 million CNG vehicles, you won’t need the footprint of Dangote Refinery. So, to get PMS is not only expensive, but also time and space consuming. This is what makes PMS expensive.

“With these natural blessings, why would Nigerians live beside the ocean and be washing their hands with slit? Why would we have these bountiful gas resources, which are easier to produce, cheaper on our pocket, cleaner for our environment and safer and not make good use of them?’’

  • FG says CNG vehicles ‘ll reduce cost of transportation

FG says CNG vehicles ‘ll reduce cost of transportation

The Federal Government has said that a switch over from petrol-driven vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles would reduce the cost of transportation in the country.

The Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, said this during a working visit to an International Liquified Natural Gas Energy Conversion, Transportation and Safety Company in Abuja on Tuesday.

Alkali said that CNG-powered vehicles would change the Nigerian economy since transportation was the gateway to the nation’s economy.

He said that with the switch over to CNG, a lot of resources would be saved and the  challenges with public transportation would be solved.

“By the time this CNG is put in place all over the country, we are going to have a drastic reduction in the cost of transportation.

“Already, we have a lot of CNG outlets in Abuja. It is the desire of President Bola Tinubu to provide this CNG outlets in the entire country,”he said.

The minister said that with CNG, government was redoubling efforts at providing safer and cheaper energy in the transportation sector, which should bring down the cost of goods and services.

Also speaking, former Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Sen. Ita Enang, said that CNG-driven vehicles would reduce the cost of transportation by 90 per cent.

“It is a massive effort, and it is for projects and programmes like this that President Bola Tinubu created a specialised ministry of transportation and ministry of gas.

“This is so that each of them will contribute in different ways to easing the cost of living and transportation for Nigerians.

“This is a justification that it was necessary for the President and the government to remove subsidy on petroleum products because there is this alternative.

  • CNG: NNPCL leads Nigeria’s quest for a new world

CNG: NNPCL leads Nigeria’s quest for a new world

    By Uche T Uchenna

With the pronouncement on May 29, 2023, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, effectively bringing to an end the regime of subsidy payment in Nigeria, it became imperative that a new way of doing things has to be found, particularly, how to ameliorate the expected side effects of the removal of subsidy.

While the Presidency busied itself with the most plausible ways to address the after effects of the subsidy withdrawal, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) quickly articulated what to do in the circumstance.

It saw the possibility of exploring further Nigeria’s vast natural gas deposit with particular attention to transportation. Meanwhile, the Federal Government has decided that it would have to focus on developing Compress Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles in a bid to cut the consumption of premium motor spirit (PMS) popularly called petrol.

It was, therefore, a thing of joy to see that both the Federal Government and the NNPCL were thinking alike and in the same direction in their bid to find a lasting solution in this regard.

Read Also; Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea to sign youth development agreement

While the Federal Government went into an agreement with Innoson Motors for the production of CNG vehicles, the NNPCL on its part voted to construct CNG stations across the country.

This seemingly joint but actually separate efforts can best be described as a welcomed synergy for the good of Nigeria and Nigerians.

On Thursday, July 4, 2024, the NNPCL simultaneously commissioned 12 CNG stations in Lagos and Abuja.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Mallam Mele Kyari, during the event declared that the drive to bring CNG closer to Nigerians has commenced and was irreversible.

What this simply means is that with the commissioning of the 12 CNG stations in Abuja and Lagos, the NNPCL would soon ensure a nationwide spread of the CNG stations.

In his words: “There is simply no way to turn back on delivering CNG for all Nigerians. It is the right thing to do. Is it late? Yes, but we will make progress, we will cover the gap in order to ensure that the volatility we see with Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) does not apply to gas,” Kyari stated.

Kyari had words of commendation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing the needed support to drive domestic gas utilisation aimed at delivering cleaner and cheaper source of energy to Nigerians.

While assuring that the NNPC Ltd will continue to deliver more strategic gas projects for the benefit of Nigerians in line with the Presidential CNG Initiative of bringing prosperity to all Nigerians, Kyari reaffirmed the determination of the NNPC to guarantee the nation’s energy security.

At the same occasion, the Managing Director, NNPC Retail Limited, NNPCL Mr. Huub Stokman painted a very encouraging and heart warming picture when he revealed that in the next one year, NNPC Retail would have launched over 100 CNG sites, including 16 NNPC Gas Marketing and NIPCO Gas JV sites. “CNG provides Nigeria with affordable alternatives to existing available fuel products. It will be about 40% cheaper than petrol in Nigeria and with continued investments, it will become a significant part of our energy mix,” Stokman added. Of course, the event attracted the who is who in the oil and gas industry, with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, representing the President who is the Minister of Petroleum Resources. The Minister, while commissioning the stations, highlighted their advantages to the country, saying that they will not only provide economic benefits by creating jobs and stimulating local economies, they will also contribute significantly to Nigeria’s national goals of reducing emissions and combating climate change.

It is on the light of the above that Monday, August 12, has been a remarkable leap forward for both manufacturers of CNG and the officials that are buying them for the people’s use. On that day and in its continued efforts to support the FG’s drive to deepen nationwide utilisation of CNG the NNPC Ltd, through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm, NNPC Foundation, donated 10 CNG buses to cushion the effect of transportation on Nigerians. Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, made the donation on behalf of the company.

She declared that the gesture, under the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) initiative on CNG, was aimed at providing cheaper transportation for Nigerians, promoting a cleaner alternative source of energy and boosting the nation’s economy. Coincidentally, the announcement of the gesture was on the same day President Bola Tinubu inaugurated 30 CNG buses in a bid to ease the plight of commuters across the country.

The major aim was to ease the burden of transportation on the citizens which was brought about by the removal of fuel subsidy.

Winifred Akpani, described the formal unveiling of the buses as a game changer for the transport sector. Tinubu had assured that the CNG buses to be provided will help to ease transportation challenges faced by Nigerians, especially in the Federal Capital Territory.

In the first phase of procurement, 30 buses were acquired from Innoson Motors, an indigenous vehicle manufacturing firm.

At the symbolic ceremony performed at the forecourt of the State House, Abuja, President Tinubu declared that commercial vehicles in Nigeria make up about 80 percent of nation’s petrol consumption, costing the country trillions of naira monthly. Speaking during the brief ceremony, Tinubu said, “I am very honoured to be here, it is a great expression for me to receive these buses on behalf of the government and making a significant innovation to the transportation system. “Utilizing natural gas to power our transportation industry is the next way to go.

For many countries especially Nigeria, with our own gas, if we work harder, be productive and innovative, it is an economic necessity that we should embrace.

“I noted the recent yearnings of many ordinary Nigerians on transportation. I thank INNOSON Motors and others we have been committed to change this narrative in this country.

“If we can enhance our energy competitiveness and bring about transformative changes like this, we would definitely be able to achieve the prosperity that we are working hard to accomplish for our people.

“The solution is here. We have it, we will work on it. We promise you, things will definitely get better, prosperity will be achieved,” Tinubu said. From whichever way one looks at it, the NNPCL has taken the lead in the quest by Nigeria for a new world, and like Kyari said, yes, there’s no going back.

Presidential initiative unveils Rideshare CNG conversion, app

Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PCNGI) has launched Rideshare CNG conversion incentive and MYCNG app at Portland/NASENI Centre in Abuja.

Present were Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, Director General of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Dr. Mohammed Bulama, representing minister for Information and National Orientation, stakeholders in transportation, and ridesharing representatives.

The launch is part of PCNGI move to lower fare by e-hailing taxis with a 50 per cent conversion discount to Compressed Natural Gas.

Programme Director/Chief Executive Officer, Michael Oluwagbemi, noted significance of the e-hailing taxi service, saying in 2020, the sector generated $290 million, with seven million people using the service.

He said: “Transportation is responsible for 14 to 15 per cent of average family spending. It contributes 1.5 per cent to the economy, with average 5.1 per cent growth on year-to-year basis.”

The director noted in Nigeria, vehicle-to-population ratio is about 60 vehicles to 1,000, with 41.1 per cent of the about 12 million vehicles privately owned, and concentrated in urban areas.

“This means the real opportunity for moving people around in an environment where there is no vehicle ownership is ride-share. Global ride-hailing market is about $130 billion as of 2020, and could reach $230 billion by 2026, about 8.75 per cent growth.

“In 2020, revenue in Africa from ride-share was about $2.5 billion, with Nigeria accounting for $292 billion, and accounting for 15 per cent of the 48.6 million that used ride-share…’’

Oluwagbemi said use of CNG would reduce cost of fuelling for cab drivers by about 70 percent, lower cost of operation and fare price for passengers. He added MYCNG app is a one-stop solution for convenient and eco-friendly fuelling.

Bulama said: “I commend PCNGI  for championing CNG, in line with the President’s vision for industrial transformation.”

Ekpo described the rideshare sector as a vital part of urban transportation system, adding CNG will afford the country to make use of its abundant natural gas reserves.

“The incentive, in conjunction with the app, are a bold steps. By offering a 50 per cent discount for rideshare drivers upon sign-up and scheduling through the MYCNG app, we are making CNG a more viable option and easing the financial burden on drivers…” Ekpo said.

  • How Tinubu reduced costs with CNG, by minister

How Tinubu reduced costs with CNG, by minister

….launches Rideshare conversion incentive program & the My CNG app

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, announced on Friday, August 9, that the federal government has reduced the cost of fuel for drivers by deploying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), which is a cheaper fuel.

Speaking in Abuja during the “Launch of Rideshare Conversion Incentive Program & the My CNG App”, the minister said that drivers are expected to lower the transport fare for their passengers.

Idris, who was represented by the Director General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Dr. Mohammed Bulama, emphasised that while the country is seeking to reduce the cost of petrol, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGI) has proposed CNG as the alternative that the government has adopted for this purpose.

He described it as a cleaner and cheaper fuel designed to reduce the cost of fueling vehicles and machinery for respite for lives and livelihoods.

His words: “At a time when Nigerians are eagerly looking forward to lowering costs, CNG is one of the interventions guaranteed to bring reprieve to lives and livelihoods by reducing the costs of fueling vehicles and machinery as a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol and diesel.

“It embodies our aspirations for a country that is committed to the energy transition and the economic well-being of the state.

“Today, by virtue of the new converted initiative program, a segment of our working population that is made up of Ride Share Drivers stands poised to benefit from CNG conversion.

“And when the drivers benefit, their paid passengers will benefit by extension as well and some of the reduced cost will be passed on.”

He said since Tinubu established the P-CNGI, it has attracted the business community more than $50m in private investment towards the establishment of CNG conversion and refuelling facilities across the country.

He noted that it has also created thousands of jobs and opportunities for the technical skills of Nigerians.

Idris recalled that earlier this year, he was privileged to be a guest at a new CNG plant in Abuja and also witnessed the establishment of 40 CNG conversion centres.

He added: “So I can boldly say I have seen things first hand. And I know that in every corner of the country investments like this are ongoing.”

Gas, he said, has become very central to the economic development and prosperity of Nigeria.

The minister said in May, Tinubu commissioned three very critical gas projects in the Niger Delta, which the administration inherited and fast-tracked to completion.

He added that in June, he joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NPCL) and other stakeholders on a visit to Kaduna to observe the River Kaduna segment of the Ajaokuta Kaduna Kano Gas pipeline project (AKK), Nigeria’s gas project pipeline system.

Idris said across Nigeria, the Tinubu administration is driving the country into a giant construction site, putting in place a higher network of gas-critical infrastructure that will translate hope from vision to reality.

In his keynote address, the P-CNGI, Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi recalled that the country witnessed some unrest in the last two weeks due to the soaring cost of living.

He noted that transportation gulps a significant percentage of about 15% of average family spending and contributes 1.55% to the overall economy.

Oluwagbemi said in Nigeria 40% of the 12 million vehicles in the country are privately owned.

The P-CNGI CEO said: “We have all been witnesses to the incidents in our political scene in the last couple of weeks.

“And undermining these incidents are the rising cost of living. The rising cost of living means that more Naira is needed to live for daily life.

“And transportation forms a significant proportion of what we spend on a daily basis. Indeed, we know that transportation is responsible for 14% to 15% of an average family spending.

“It contributes about 1.55% to the overall economy with an average of 5.41% growth on a year-to-year basis.”

On Ride Share Drivers, he said since

41% of the about 12 million vehicles in Nigeria are privately owned with vehicle ownership concentrated in about one area, it means that the real opportunity for moving people around in an environment where there is low vehicle ownership is this Rideshare Technology that has become available across the land in the last 10 years.

The global ride-hailing market, he said, is valued at about $113billion as of 2020. It is anticipated to reach a value of $230 billion by 2026.

He added that it registered about 8.75% growth between 2021 and 2026.

Meanwhile, in his opening remarks, the Portland Gas Limited, Managing Director, Engr. Folajimi Mohammed said the P-CNGI has been instrumental in paving the way for innovation that will reshape the way people think about transportation and energy consumption in the country.

Mohammed added: “This initiative as a beacon of progress guiding us towards a future where cleaner energy is not just an option.”

On Ride Share, Mohammed said, “Today, one of the key components of this initiative is the Ride Share CNG conversion incentive program.

” It is a groundbreaking effort to encourage the adoption of CNG among shareride drivers.

“This program is a game changer offering substantial incentives for drivers to convert their vehicles to CNG thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and lowering fuel cost as well. “It is a win-win for both the environment and the economy and we at Portland Gas are fully committed to supporting this initiative in every way possible.”

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo said the rideshare sector is a vital part of the urban transportation system, providing flexible and cost-effective mobility solutions to millions of Nigerians, particularly the youth.

He said however, the rising costs of traditional fuels have posed a significant challenge to both drivers and passengers, often leading to higher fares and reduced access to affordable transportation.

Ekpo noted that the CNG Conversion Incentive Program, in conjunction with the My CNG App, is a bold response to these challenges.

He said “By offering a 50% discount for rideshare drivers upon sign-up and scheduling through the My CNG App, we are not only making CNG a more viable option but also easing the financial burden on drivers. This will translate to more affordable transportation options for the users.”
