NFF dismisses calls for foreign coach

Mike Umeh has described calls for a foreign assistant to be hired for Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi as an unnecessary distraction.

The NFF Vice-President told journalists on Thursday that the demands are unwarranted as Keshi is capable of leading the Super Eagles to the World Cup, citing the results since his appointment as evidence of his capability.

“We have not lost any match since Stephen Keshi started work as Super Eagles’ chief coach, so, what are we talking about? Your measurement is according to the results you posted in your matches, since he has not lost any match, I do not think that there would be any need for a foreign technical adviser,” Umeh queried.”

He therefore called on stakeholders to avoid causing distractions to both the NFF and the coaching crew of the senior national team.

“There must be no distraction to the smooth revolution by the NFF and the Super Eagles coaching crew with the call for a foreign technical adviser, we are indigenous people and the team is doing very well with the indigenous coaches.”

    …Unveil Aigbogun as coach today

Warri Wolves will today make public the appointment of Enyimba Assistant Coach, Paul Aigbogun as new Technical Adviser, a top source has revealed to SportingLife.

Aigbogun worked with the same club two seasons ago before the England-trained coach resigned his appointment for personal reasons. He was replaced by nomadic Belgian, Maurice Cooreman who also left after barely a season in the saddle.

SportingLife’s checks in Warri revealed that many top coaches including Lawrence Akpokona applied for the plum job but that the lot might have fallen on coach Aigbogun based on his experience and exploits with Enyimba during the outgone season. He helped the People’s Elephant to victory in the Federation Cup but they narrowly lost the league shield to Kano Pillars.

Aigbogun and his assistants would also be made public today, according to SportingLife’s source.

“We hope to unveil our new coach on Friday. We will appoint a credible coach who will win us trophies,” Rangers general manager Paul Chibuzor said.

Speculation is rife that former Nigeria Under-20 coach John Obuh will be saddled with the onerous task of reclaiming lost glory for the Enugu club. Officials have disclosed that the eight-man backroom staff Emordi left behind will stay put for the new season.

‘The Flying Antelopes’, as Rangers are known by their fans, have not won a major trophy in about three decades.

Emordi said he quit because he did not enjoy an enabling environment to discharge his duties effectively.

Under the former Enyimba handler, Rangers placed fifth this past season after they were runners-up the previous season.
