    Benue to partner old boys to restore college

    Governor Samuel Ortom has promised to help the famous Government College Katsina-Ala to recover land it lost to encroachment.

    Ortom also promised to release funds to the school that has produced many prominent personalities from the north as part of plans to restore the institution in partnership with the Katsina-Ala Old Boys Association (KAOBA).

    The governor spoke in response to an appeal by the KAOBA President, Dr Haroun Adamu, to help the college to recover its landed property and construct a parameter fence at Centenary Convention of the College organised by KAOBA last Saturday.

    Speaking at the event held in the school, Ortom described the school as the foundation of knowledge in the Northern Nigeria and praised KAOBA members for their unwavering contribution to its growth.

    He said his administration was committed to developing the education sector, informing why he has trained 10,000 teachers and has plans to renovate all secondary schools and equip them with modern facilities.

    Governors of Taraba and Nassarawa states, Dickson Isiaku and Alhaji Tanko Almakura also pledged to continue to support the school whenever they were called upon.

    Chairman of the occasion, General Theophilus Danjuma (retd), an old boy, called on affluent KAOBA members to sustain their contribution to the growth of their alma mater despite hard times.

    On his part, Principal of the college, Mr Stephen Gber, reeled out some development efforts since he came on board one of which was the restoration of accreditation by NECO.

    He however decried the reduction in the population of pupils and inadequate facilities, calling for government’s intervention.

    The convention drew participants from various parts of the country.

     

  • Kogi College gets accreditation

    The Kogi State College of Education (Technical), Kabba has been given 100 percent accreditation for its National Certificate in Education (NCE) programme.

    This was contained in a press statement that quoted a letter from the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) Abuja conveying the result of the accreditation exercise conducted last November, a copy of which was obtained by The Nation in Lokoja.

    The statement which was signed by the school’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr. O. Yunusa, stated that the 11 programmes presented for accreditation were all approved.

    They include: Biology Education, Mathematics Education, Integrated Science And Computer Education.

    Other programmes that got the nod are Physics, Chemistry, Fine and Applied Arts, Technical Education, Agricultural Education and Physical and Health Education.

    The provost of the institution, Dr Awo Olajide Komolafe, said the feat was a testimony of hard work and dedication by the workers, and government’s support for the college.

    He added: “It is the first of its kind for a new college to achieve the feat of clinching 100 percent success in accreditation outing among colleges of education in the country”.

    The institution hosted the team from the NCCE between November 22 and 28, 2015 for the exercise.

  • College floats entrepreneurship centre

    Henry Alex-Duduyemi Memorial College (HAMEC) in Ile Ife, Osun State, has established a Leadership and Entrepreneurship Centre to train secondary school pupils on how to start and run business successfully.

    According to the Principal of the college, Mrs Deborah Akinpelu, the centre will have five major departments.

    She said: “The entrepreneurship centre has training department, the incubation point, the enterprise farm, the brand development department and the operation (equipment) division. The curriculum to be used to train the pupils has been approved by the Federal Ministry of Education. We have installed more than 10 GoVenture game boards and simulations fully installed on 30 computers for direct gaming programmes. it would afford pupils to compete among themselves.”

    Mrs Akinpelu added that pupils will get entrepreneurship books and N30, 000 to N50, 000 loan to invest in vocation they learn.

    She added: “Since we run a full boarding programme, students will have periods to participate in the programme. The programme will improve their mathematics and other key subjects. We will also bring mentors to engage and inspire them on how to excel and nurture businesses. What we hope to achieve is train our pupils on good ideas to make them successful.”

    The college was established in 1997 by the renowned businessman, Chief Oyekunle Alex-Duduyemi, in memory of his late father Henry Alex-Duduyemi.

  • Provosts seek revival of Teachers’ College

    The Committee of Provosts (COP) of Colleges of Education is seeking the revival of the old Teachers Training College to serve as a feeder for colleges of education.

    COP is also seeking an upgrade of the law establishing the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) to National Commission for Tertiary Education (NCTE), which would empower colleges of education to issue a degree after two years of study.

    This call was contained in a communiqué issued after COP’s 76th regular meeting held at the NCCE headquarters in Abuja.

    The communiqué, signed by the chairman, communiqué drafting committee, Prof. Emmanuel Ojeme, stated: “There is need for the review of JAMB-UTME to detach colleges of education from the process, because it is disadvantageous students wanting to study education courses in the country. We recommend for the return of the old teachers training colleges to form a feeder to colleges of education while NCE programme should be structured to a full two years leading to the award of B.Ed.  degree in education.”

    The committee also called for a review of the curriculum of National Certificate of Education (NCE) in order to enhance productivity and increase its relevance to Nigerians.

    The committee warned the National Teachers Institute (NTI) and few others to desist from running an open distance learning (ODL) programmes for NCE and degree, which, they said, it is not equipped to run. The provosts urge NTI to limit its role to organising workshops, seminars conferences and training.

    To boost teaching profession, the body also called on governments at all levels to introduce special incentives for teacher education to attract highflying students who would be trained as professionals.

  • Oshiomhole names VC for upgraded college

    Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has appointed Prof Edomwonyi Aduwa-Ogiegbaen as the Vice Chancellor of the Tayo Akpata University of Education, Ekiadolor.

    This is coming after the government approved the upgrade of the institution, formerly a college of education, into a university.

    Until his appointment, Aduwa-Ogiegbaen was the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Ekenwan Campus, Benin City.

    In a letter dated April 14, this year, the Governor said: “I wish to inform you that Edo State Government has approved the up-grading of the Edo State College of Education, Ekiadolor to a University of Education to be called Tayo Akpata University of Education, Ekiadolor.

    “I feel privileged to have the honour by virtue of the powers conferred on me as the Visitor by the enabling laws establishing the University to appoint you as the Vice Chancellor of the University with effect from April 18, 2016.

    “Given your resourcefulness, expertise, experience, global network and reach, I believe that the University would benefit enormously from your uncommon visionary leadership.”

    Aduwa-Ogiegbaen, a descendant of the Benin Royal Family is the Enogie (Duke) of Egaben/Ogbeson in Benin Kingdom. He has combined academics with the traditional administration of his Dukedom.

    He has over 40 publications in reputable national and international journals and is a member of the Nigerian Association of Educational Media & Technology (NAEMT); Curriculum Organisation of Nigeria (CON) and Association for Promoting Quality Education in Nigeria (APQEN).

    It was to a filled audience at Nelo’s Place, Ikeja, Lagos, penultimate week ,that students, parents and staff  of Westerfield College Lagos were treated to a praise and worship concert last week.

    The visioner of the concert, Mr MichaelDosunmu, who is also the Managing Director of the school, while speaking during the event, disclosed that he started the concert two years later after he started the school five years ago. According to him, he saw a combination of young people raising their hands praising and worshiping God in a dream.

    “I saw a combination of young people with myself praising and worshiping God,” he said.

    Pastor GbemisolaTaiwo of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Greater Harvest Parish while ministering at the concert, stressed the need to always praise God, quoting Psalm 150:6.

    She said “God is not looking for “professional praisers”. People who read, cite, and sing prayers and songs that have already been written. What God is looking for are men and women that have been transformed from the inside out, and who really want to praise Him for revealing himself to him.’’

    At the programme, there were several musical presentations by Day Star Choir, Kenny band, Westerfield Choir among others.

    The management of Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology (OYSCATECH) in Igboora has congratulated Governor Abiola Ajimobi for the Supreme Court’s verdict affirming his victory in the last general election.

    The college, in a statement by its Provost, Prof Gbemiga Adewale, described the governor’s success at the court as triumph of democracy, saying the verdict reflected the confidence the people reposed in the governor to administer the affairs of the state.

    The statement reads: “The OYSCATECH management and students heartily felicitate with our Visitor, Governor Abiola Ajimobi, as the Supreme Court confirmed the mandate freely given to him by the people in the last general election.

    “As the governor marches on to fulfil the people’s mandate, we pray that the Almighty God offer him the much needed guidance, energy and the wisdom to take the state to enviable heights.”

    College to Obiano: save us from robbers

    MANAGEMENT of Federal College of Education (Technical) in Umunze, Anambra State, has urged Governor Willie Obiano to save the college from hoodlums which have been terrorising it.

    The Provost, Prof Josephat Ogbuagu, said despite the governor’s successes  in ridding the state of criminal, some hoodlums have not given the college rest of mind. He called on the government to rescue the inhabitants from the criminals in the school community.

    Ogbuagu appealed to Obiano to reinforce security around the college, saying workers were living in fear of the criminals.

    He said the insecurity in Umunze climaxed with the killing of the school’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sunday Ike, who was robbed of his car and shot in his family house in Umunze.

    The school’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Mr Okoli Onyekachukwu, was also robbed at the entrance of the college by hoodlums, who accosted him with a motorcycle and dispossessed him of his valuables, including N330,000 cash.

    Ogbuagu said: “The incessant armed robbery in Umunze has triggered fear among residents and students. Many have been telling stories of attacks and we urge the governor to help in addressing the issue.”

    An employee of the college, Nwafor Chinedu, said life had become unbearable for residents, adding: “Residents now either sleep with one eye closed or remain awake all night, out of fear that men of the underworld who have laid siege to the college community, may come again as they have done several times recently.”

    CAMPUSLIFE gathered that Mr. Emeka Umendu, a lecturer at the Department of Computer Education, was robbed of his Nissan Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and other valuables. Another female member of the staff was said to have received threat message from a gang of hoodlums, asking her to send N2 million or they would kill her.

     

  • College fetes Cowbellpedia champion

    Authorities of Adeyemi College of Education (ACE), Ondo, have organised a reception in honour of the winner of the 2015 Cowbell National Secondary School Mathematics Competition, Ayodeji Akinkuowo.

    The SS3 pupil of the Adeyemi College of Education Demonstration Secondary School Ondo (ACEDSSO), won the star prize of N750,000 in the senior category of the competition organised by Promasidor Nigeria Limited, makers of Cowbell Milk.

    ACE Provost, Prof. Olukoya Ogen, represented by Dr. Ajigbade Ikuejube, Dean, School of Arts and Social Science, lauded Akinkuowo, for his excellent performance and presented a gift to the teenager, who also got N100,000 presented by the chairman, ACEDSSO PTA, Mr Mamukuyomi Ebenezer.

    Ogen praised the Management and teachers of ACEDSSO, saying the feat was a reflection of the quality of teaching in the school. He promised to employ more competent teachers for the school so it can continue to compete favourably with others.

    Ogen also praised Akinkuowo’s parents for investing in his education, an example worthy of emulation.

    The principal, Mr Emmanuel Owasoyo, described Akinkuowo as a brilliant and humble student and attributed his success to brilliance, mental capacity and hard work.

    Akinkuowo’s father, Mr Taye Akinkuowo thanked the Management of ACE and ACEDSSO for providing the opportunity for him to participate in the competition.

    On his part, the teenager pledged to remain a good Ambassador and advised other students to work hard in order to bring more glory to the school.
