Oshiomhole swears in 18 new commissioners

Eighteen commissioners have been inaugurated by Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, without assigning them any portfolio.

The governor charged them to brace up for the challenges that will drive the changes required to fast-track the development of the state.

Speaking shortly after administering the oath of office on the commissioners in Government House, Benin City yesterday, Oshiomhole said: “I expect you to do better as we are no longer learning the curves.

“Let me congratulate you on your appointment. You will notice for those who are coming back I say welcome.”

Oshiomhole said his victory in the eighteen local governments of the state was a testimony to the collective efforts of the last cabinet.

“Your re-appointment is simply to say we appreciated your contributions and with you, I will have old colleagues with whom we can have the necessary changes,” he stressed.

Commenting on the integrity of the cabinet, he said: “They are also men and women who I believe are no longer strangers to me having worked with them either within the party or outside the party.”

He charged them to justify the confidence reposed in them.

According to him: “Every local government expects that their vote will be rewarded with development. Every community must feel the presence of a government that works and a government that cares and one that appreciates that the people are the master and those in government are the stewards.”

Barrister Osarodion Ogie, who spoke on behalf of the new commissioners, thanked the governor for the appointment.

He said: “I want to assure you that we accept the challenge of bringing to fruition your electoral promises. We are prepared and fit to bring your electoral promises to fruition”.

“You should carry the technocrats and professionals in your Ministries, Departments and Authorities (MDAs) along in the policy direction of the departments, as they are critical in the corporate success of this administration.

“There must also be proper ministerial coordination for optimal utilisation of resources. To enhance productivity, some changes will occur in ministerial responsibilities.

“I remind you of this administration’s zero-tolerance to corruption and fraudulent practices. You must live above board in your dealings and be cautious of the implications and consequences of breaching the laws under the guise of public function. To this administration, there are no sacred cows.”

Elechi suspends Attorney General, two commissioners for improper dressing

The Ebonyi State Governor, Martin Elechi, yesterday suspended the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Ben Igwenyi, with two other commissioners for improper dressing.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onyekachi Eni, named the two commissioners as Hyacinth Ikpo,

Commissioner for Culture and Tourism and Mr. Chukwuma Nwandiugo, (Works and Transport).

The commissioners were said to have dressed casually to a state banquet organised for the members of the Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) at the Government House on Friday night.

According to the statement, the suspension was for a period of three months. The statement further directed the commissioners not to attend any state function throughout the duration of their suspension.

The governor was said to have been enraged by the commissioners’ lacklustre dressing to the occasion which had in attendance members of SOGON from various states of the federation which seemed to portray a bad image of the state in the eyes of the visitors.

Sources close to Government House revealed that the suspension is without pay, adding that the commissioners have been directed to hand over all government properties in their possession to their permanent secretaries.

When our correspondent visited the official residence of one of the commissioners, hundreds of men and women especially from his hometown were seen in clusters discussing the suspension and a possible solution to the problem.

One of the early callers, Mr. Ifeanyi Chukwu, said the announcement came to them as a big surprise. “Our son since his appointment has been dressing in a manner that portrays him as a man of high integrity. He has represented the state government at many functions and what happened may be a little oversight.”

  • Ajimobi drops three commissioners

    Ajimobi drops three commissioners

The Oyo State Government has dropped three commissioners. They are Yunus Akintunde (Works), Kazeem Adedeji (Trade, Investments and Cooperatives) and Bosun Oladele (Information and Orientation).

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Waheed Olajide, announced the sack yesterday after the State Executive Council meeting.

He said Governor Abiola Ajimobi took the decision to ensure the success of his transformation agenda.

Olajide said the name of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Taiwo Otegbeye, had been sent to the House of Assembly for confirmation as a Commissioner.

The portfolios of six commissioners were also changed yesterday.

Mr. Peter Odetomi of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs was moved to the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Mr. Isaac Omodewu was from the Ministry of Lands and Survey to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

It was learnt that Oladele’s sack was shocking to workers at the Ministry of Information and Orientation and some of them burst into tears.

Oladele thanked the government for giving him an opportunity to serve his people. He also thanked workers at the ministry for their support.

It was learnt that Oladele was sacked for not being in the good books of a top government official, who is close to the governor.

Oladele initiated some good innovations in the ministry during his 15 months in office.

The Nation gathered that Akintunde was sacked following a row between him and a major traditional ruler in the state, who nominated him for the appointment.

His ministry executed many road projects under his leadership.

It was unclear as at press time why Adedeji was sacked. He was a contender for the governorship ticket of the ACN last year.

Special advisers to the governor are apprehensive, following news that changes in their portfolios would be announced today.

A Special Adviser, who did not want to be named, said: “My brother, only God knows who will still be here after tomorrow (today). Some commissioners have been were dropped and others redeployed. SAs are afraid but we will know our fate tomorrow (today).”
