  • Fayose congratulates parents

EKITI State Governor Ayodele Fayose has congratulated parents of the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls, who were released yesterday.

The governor also sympathised with parents of five of the girls that reportedly died.

He described the abduction of the girls as an indictment on the Federal Government and their release as “drama scripted by the government and its agents to swindle Nigerians”.

Fayose, while reacting to the release of the abducted school girls, said: “This appears like an arranged abduction and an arranged release, but we thank God that the innocent girls have returned home and we condole with parents of those that died.”

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said it was strange that the girls could be brought back to Dapchi by their abductors without the knowledge of security agents.

He said: “Curiously, the same spirit who made sure that all military checkpoints in Dapchi and other surrounding towns were removed to pave way for abduction of the girls also made sure that the girls were returned without any security agent seeing them.

“One can only be hopeful that the real script writers behind this drama will be exposed one day.

“Nigerians should recall that the Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, said that military checkpoints were withdrawn from Dapchi and other communities a few days before the abduction of the 110 girls.”

  • Coalition congratulates Buhari, sets agenda for President

Coalition congratulates Buhari, sets agenda for President

A group, Coalition of Progressive Political Parties (COP3), has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari for his safe return to the country after a 50-day extended medical vacation in the United Kingdom.

In a statement signed by the Chairman, Bashir Yusuf Ibrahim, the group said: “We welcome the President back home and pray for the full restoration of his well being so he can continue to pilot the affairs of the Nigerian state and complete the mandate Nigerians gave to him in full.

“In his absence, speculations were rife, from the mundane to the absurd, that the President was so sick he may not return. We are glad that these speculations have now been put to rest. The purveyors of negative propaganda have now been put to shame. It is now time for Nigerians of goodwill to put all this negativity behind as an ugly part of our history and move forward with optimism, patriotism and the fear of God in our hearts.”

It commended the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo for  diligently holding the fort for the President while he was away. “While the President was away, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, GCON, who acted on his behalf, did not disappoint his boss or Nigerians at large. He took the bull by the horn and ran the affairs of the country as the President would have wanted him to do. We are proud of him and thank him for his stellar performance and the qualities of his leadership. The Vice President has proven the President was right to choose him as his partner and that the President can always go to sleep with both eyes closed. This is how it should be.”

With the return of the President, the group said it expects a few things to change, adding: “There is no doubt, the quality and style of administration and economic management can improve. For this to happen, institutional and personnel changes in the right places are necessary. We also expect the President to move quickly and dispose of the matter of the composition of boards of federal parastatals and other statutory agencies. The business of governance, especially corporate governance, had suffered a lot due the absence of these boards. There is no reason whatsoever for further delay.

“Power supply has continued to be a major challenge. We are not unaware of willful sabotage mounted against power infrastructure by militants and the cash crunch which had negatively affected the power value chain. We are hopeful increased revenue from hydrocarbon exports is a sign of better things to come. Nonetheless, we recommend that the President unbundles the Ministry of Works, Housing and Power for greater efficiency and in the national interest. The merger of vastly different functions performed by these ministries had, so far, not worked.”

He said: “From the beginning, this election set out to be a different kind of election. The unity and resilience of the party was tested. I am happy we came out of this victorious.

“This is a huge win. The mood today is against corruption, insecurity and for the restoration of the economy and the creation of jobs. This is where the party stands and I am happy that the electorate has read the situation correctly,” said the President.

The President commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the security agencies and the voters for the peaceful and successful conduct of the elections.

He urged Akeredolu, as he prepares to assemble his team and bring the much-desired change to the people, to put behind whatever acrimonies may have arisen from the electioneering process and reach out to all well-meaning people in the state and beyond to implement his vision.

He also assured Nigerians that the APC-led administration under his watch was committed to playing by the rules, and there will be no let-up “until we see the great nation of our dreams in all spheres of national development”.

  • Obuah congratulates Dickson

The Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated its Bayelsa State counterpart and Governor Seriake Dickson for winning the recent governorship election.

A statement from the Chairman, Felix Obuah and signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Jerry Needam, said the PDP’s victory over the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a political statement that the PDP remains a grassroots party and the people’s first choice, notwithstanding the politics of intimidation and coercion being employed by the APC to thwart the will of the people.

Obuah also commended the people of Bayelsa for their steadfastness and resilience, in the face of attempts to silence the voice of the majority, which eventually settled the month-long impasse in favour of the PDP.

According to the Chairman, all the party wants is a conducive environment and level-playing ground for a keen contest, saying the PDP has what it takes to win in Bayelsa and Rivers any day.

He enjoined the people of Bayelsa and numerous PDP members to key into the developmental agenda of the Dickson administration for the overall development of the state and also remain vigilant and alert to the APC’s propaganda and antics, so that they would not be deceived.

The APC, Obuah said, has no plans for the Bayelsa people other than to further impoverish the state by conniving with their paymasters at the centre to liquidate the remaining state resources.

“We are indeed, proud of your efforts and insistence on your rights to have the kind of leader you want. The Almighty God that heard and granted your prayers will never fail you. The PDP is now wiser and has no alternative but to improve the welfare of the people and the infrastructural development of the state,” Obuah declared.
