    Coscharis boss Maduka and character

In a viral video trending on TikTok, Coscharis Group founder Cosmas Maduka speaks about the five levels of money. Having been in business since he was 17, the 66-year-old magnate is lyrical about defining values from the money or wealth perspective. He identifies the levels of money to be (a) credibility, (b) credible relationship, (c) integrity, (d) character, and (e) competence, the last being the least. He, however, adds a sixth, but he is not keen on making it a level of money for reasons he explains in the clip. His classifications are generally sound, if not profound. It is hard to fault him on any of the five, or even the six, but his perspective on character appears inconclusive, perhaps for reason of time on a video clip to explicate the subject; or perhaps because trying to tie that virtue to success and wealth can be sometimes very arduous and limiting.

Apart from being a successful businessman, he is also a pastor, motivational speaker, philanthropist, and business mentor. In explicating character, he suggests that it is at the foundation of anyone’s life. He also explains that character is the fulcrum of leadership, but adds that once a person possesses character he will ‘have success and make wealthy’, obviously because he is talking about the levels of money. But since he brings the issue of leadership into his talk, it is important to let his publics know that wealth may not necessarily accompany character. If wealth comes, of course, character should undergird it. But success is a little more universal and perhaps less discriminating, implying that sometimes success in money terms can be achieved unscrupulously and exploitatively. The success subject is, it seems, much wider and even less ethical than Mr Maduka has argued in a short clip. But as for character, it will be far better and safer to disentangle it from money terms.

The dictionary definition of character is restrictive and unhelpful, regardless of its generally acceptable connotations and denotations. The dictionary defines character in two flexible ways to mean the “mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual”, and/or “the way someone thinks, feels, and behaves: in short, someone’s personality”. The definitions are sensible but not expansive enough to give a profound feel to what Mr Maduka is saying on the subject, especially since he links it to leadership. Other sources have provided a list of constituents of character that help expatiate the subject, including but not limited to integrity, which Mr Maduka describes as the third level of money, courage, empathy, resilience, accountability, vision, collaboration, passion, and judgement. Both former United States president Richard M. Nixon, and a former French president Charles de Gaulle wrote copiously on the subject of character, even though ironically, Mr Nixon fell short of profiting from his own counsel and knowledge.

But in his recent book, On character: Choices that define a life, highly decorated US Army general Stanley A. McChrystal explains what it means to live with purpose and integrity, encouraging everyone to engage in self-examinations and judge the end results of the choices they make. According to him, “Generations will view themselves and the world differently. And they should. Their vantage points aren’t the same, and we live, work, and struggle for what we value as people, not as generations.” Last week, on television, the general dismissed US president Donald Trump as destitute of character. The House of Representatives in Nigeria will in fact find the book valuable for its recommendation on compulsory voting in which the general suggests that voting be made mandatory even if the voter would end up selecting ‘no preference’. In his compelling 118-page 1932 book, The Edge of the Sword, President de Gaulle provides what may be described as a most enthralling dissection of the art of leadership. In it he talks eloquently about what character is, including characteristics that seem sometimes absolutely counterintuitive, such as the need to cultivate mystery and aloofness, even apparent lack of empathy. With character constituting one chapter out of about five or so, he wanted the book to help everyone get a grasp of ‘the very substance of man’.

If Mr Maduka speaks restrictively of success in the business sense, and goes ahead to qualify or circumscribe it by the definitional cultures of how to make money, a reader might be tempted to gloss over the deeper intricacies of what he glibly conjoined as success and wealth within the context of character. His explanations are gripping as far as motivational speaking is concerned, what with its reference to business ethics, and the general import of his conclusions appear to be indisputable and unquestionable. But placed side by side with much deeper treatments of what character means, even exclusive of moral and religious underpinnings, not to say regardless of the idiosyncrasies of great and successful leaders, Mr Maduka’s argument appears superficial and unnecessarily moralistic. But he at least has done the country a favour by giving that interview in a video clip that has now gone viral. Younger Nigerians, many of whom have a dimwitted approach to wealth and society, should listen to him and take some useful lessons.

  • Abia, Coscharis partner on electric vehicles rollout

Abia, Coscharis partner on electric vehicles rollout

The Abia State government has concluded plans to partner with COSCHARIS to roll out Electric Vehicles for Intra City and state transport services.

Speaking during a business meeting in his Office with the Founder, President, and CEO of COSCHARIS Group Dr. Cosmas Maduka and his team, Governor Alex Otti said: “Our decision to go electric was a well thought out decision, we didn’t just jump into it; we looked at everything.”

He explained that some European countries had decided to phase out fossil fuel vehicles from 2030 and some in 2035, while some are still in the planning process to decide when it will happen.

He disclosed that the last administration of President Muhammadu Buhari  who spoke through the then Vice President, said we could only afford 2070 to phase out fossil vehicles.

“What it just tells you is that at some point, whether today or tomorrow it will happen,” he said.

Speaking further Otti said: “Beyond that, you look at the economics, what is renewable energy? It is electric; all you need to do is to charge.

“The other one you need to buy the fuel somehow, whether it is cleaner or it is crude. CNG (Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle) is cleaner, no doubt, but it is still fossil fuel. So, there are some things that it leaves in the environment.”

Talking about maintenance, the governor said, even in terms of maintenance, “you buy a vehicle that has 200 parts as against one that has 17 if TESLA is right, but the maximum is 20. So it can’t be the same”.

On the power for charging the Vehicles, he said even though “we don’t have a steady power supply, we manage to keep our phones and other electrical gadgets charged”.

He explained that with Geometric Power fully in control of power supply in Aba, covering nine local government areas and his plans for the state to take full control of electricity supply in the remaining eight LGAs thereby covering the entire state, the project will succeed.

“Aba as an island is out of the National Grid technically. So, the remaining eight Local Governments from Umuahia all the way to Arochukwu and Umunneoche, under the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) program, we are discussing with them on how to buy the Abia part of EEDC from Interstate Electricity. And, then take excess power from Geometric to Umuahia,” Otti said, adding that  to help Geometric Power solve the problem of gas which impeded powering her turbines to generate electricity, the state intervened for the Federal Government to step in.

The Federal Government, through the Vice President, summoned the Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPC and instructed that Geometric should be given priority in terms of gas supply.

He a a lot is being done to resolve the issues with the Alaoji Power plant, under the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) to produce excess power and distribute to other parts of the country.

“So, there is no state that is as well positioned as we are to push for electric vehicles. When we looked at it, we felt that it is a way to go,” the governor said.

He told the COSCHARIS Group that what was important to the state government “is not selling vehicles, anybody can sell vehicles, even without understanding the vehicles.

“But, what is important is the entire ecosystem and that is why your presentation is like music to our ears because that is actually what we are looking for.

“So, in the next few days, I will want you to sit down with my team so that we can move this to the last mile and get it started”.

Otti thanked Dr. Maduka and his team for coming and all that he’s doing to help grow the country’s economy.

Earlier in his speech, Dr. Maduka, thanked Governor Otti for choosing the company as partners for the project, affirming that they have the required experience, having been in the automobile business for about five decades.

“Let me simply say that you are discussing with the right organization in this project in the sense that this is the area where we have experience. We have been in existence for over five decades and all our core businesses have been in automobile,” Dr. Maduka stated.

Dr. Maduka assured Governor Otti that the company is interested in the project and will bring its experience and capacity to bear and help the state actualize and sustain the project.

He emphasized that Electric Vehicles is where the world is headed and described Governor Otti’s move for electric vehicles as trailblazing as it will spur other States to follow suit.

Dr. Maduka, who was physically present during Governor Otti’s inauguration as Governor on May 29th, 2023, said for the first time, the people of Abia State got it right by electing him as their governor, stating that Otti has “managed things from zero situations to tangible outcomes”.

While appreciating the work the government’s team has done on the Electric Vehicle Project, the Group Managing Director (GMD) of COSCHARIS Mr. Josiah Samuel described the state government’s electric Vehicle initiative as a step in the right direction, saying he differed with the Federal Government when he was contacted on CNG bus project, asking why not Electric Vehicles when some cities in China has achieved 50per cent penetration in EVs.

Executive Director, Strategy Mr. Jonathan Maduka, and General Manager/CEO of COSCHARIS Mobility, Mr. C.C. Chigbundu, were part of the management team of COSCHARIS that joined the Founder/CEO and the GMD to the meeting with the Abia State Government’s team.

The Principal Secretary to the Governor and Chief Strategy Officer of the Government, Mr. Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu and the Technical Assistant to the Governor, Mr. Charles Egonye, joined the Governor in the meeting with the COSCHARIS Group.

Of all the activities that dominated this year’s Banana Island Festival, the launch of BMW X7, 7 Series by the Coscharis Group was the icing on the cake.

Coscharis Motors is the sole franchisee of BMW brands in Nigeria with sales and service networks across the major cities.

The Banana Island Festival Ground at Banana Island Estate, Ikoyi was a place to be penultimate Saturday.

Best of cultural displays from different countries made the gathering a fun-filled. The participants had the opportunity of enjoying local and intercontinental cuisines.

Welcoming them to its stand, Coscharis Group President/Chief Executive Officer Dr Cosmas Maduka thanked for taking time out to be part of the memorable launch of “our globally respected BMW brand – the first-ever BMW X7 and the 7 series, which is in its Beschreibung: Bmw2fa3ptestsixth generation.”

“While we are here to celebrate our diversity and culture, we are proud to reveal a unifying first-ever BMW X7 and a new 7 Series. These vehicles are borderless on-road power, competency, and capability,” he added.

Maduka said the X7 was entering the local market for the first time, “meaning this Estate has the privilege of being the first to view and host this model. Clearly, the BMW X7 and 7 series are both flagship in their respective segments (luxury SUV and sedan). We are glad to have this launch here given the global representation at this festival, which by extension, helps to cement the global feel and acceptance of these BMW brands.

“For the first time ever in the history of BMW, the BMW 7 Series, which has remained a benchmark for luxury sedans, comes as a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) – the X7. The BMW X7 as the latest premium Sports Activity Vehicle is designed to reflect the personality and requirements of the owner. It not only adds a new top model to the X family but also defines a progressive approach to luxury for the BMW brand.”

The X7 offers standard three row seating for seven with optional second-row Captain’s chairs offering a more exclusive seating arrangement for six standard two-axle air suspension, 21-inch alloy wheels and advanced driver assistance systems ensures that the new BMW X7 lives up to expectations of style, driver engagement, passenger comfort, and all-weather and all-terrain capability.

The BMW X7 launches with a choice of two updated gasoline engines. Heading up the range is the BMW X7 xDrive50i, with an extensively updated 4.4-liter V8 engine. A 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, found under the hood of the new BMW X7 xDrive40i rounds out the model line-up. All engines channel their power through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive is on hand to ensure that power is transferred into secure progress – on or off-road.

Offering a significantly expanded array of driver assistance systems, the new BMW X7 is able to support the driver through an array of interconnected sensors by processing camera images and data acquired by radar.

The BMW X7 xDrive40i comes standard with Active Protection and Active Driving Assistant including Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Frontal Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation (which now also alerts the driver if cyclists are detected) Cross Traffic Alert Rear, and Speed Limit Information.

The 7 Series benefits from its optional anti-roll system (“Executive Drive Pro”), which reduces body movement in bends to a minimum.
